What is ECE?
● Electronics, power, signals, devices and circuits, sensors, energy conversion, optics, quantum,
applied electromagnetics.
● Control and communication systems, electrical systems, robots, embedded systems.
● Design of smart phones, radars, processors, smart grids, energy distribution, Internet of
Things.

Driving Technologies/Recent Innovations
● Computing technologies both in terms of densities, architectures, and systems (Processors, GPUs, Cloud Computing)
● Sensor and wireless technologies
● Big Data – Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Business Data
● Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
● Applications: Self Driving cars, speech recognition, natural language processing, Internet of things, health care.

ECE Faculty
• ECE has 61 full time professors, 30 affiliate faculty members, and 48 research faculty
• Our faculty includes recipients of prestigious awards such as the NSF’s CAREER Awards
• A number of our faculty hold joint appointments with different academic units and research
institutes

● ECE has a research budget of over $30 million dollars
● Many ECE students work as undergraduate research assistants in faculty member’s laboratories
● ECE undergraduate students also have access to unique research opportunities through the department
