Welcome

… to the Extra Curricular Activities booklet from Berlin Brandenburg International School 2018 Term 3.

We strongly encourage all students to participate in this program as it offers a unique opportunity to meet

new friends, be a risk-taker, and share and learn new passions whilst having fun! The program enables

students to learn new skills and fully become part of our international school community.

The ECA program aims to further open the minds and eyes of our students, to provide them with

something new and challenging to look forward to. We are therefore excited to be able to offer such

diverse activities as circus activity, international award, athletic activities, and many more new activities.

We are very fortunate with the generosity and commitment of the BBIS staff, as well as external and

volunteer instructors; however, it is sometimes impossible to offer activities all year round. This does

however, provide our students with a greater opportunity to try different activities throughout the year.

Sincerely yours,

Felipe Buitrago

Art, Illustrating & Painting Skills The students will learn to draw, illustrate and paint. Based on classical techniques, each student can develop his own interests and follow his own artistic needs. The drawing activities will have its focus on outlines, innerlines and tone creating shadows, surface, qualities, focal point using classical techniques (range of graphite, charcoal, ink, lightening on coloured paper). Furthermore, we will explore illustration and painting using basic colour based techniques and experience the importance of under painting. We will apply our knowledge of how to use the colour wheel and the importance of grey values. It is also possible to develop an abstract approach on paper and canvas.

This course is designed to meet the needs of students from various experiences and ability levels, and will certainly enhance any artistic development needed in the upper grades and the IB Visual Arts program at BBIS.

Most importantly, the class is designed to be a welcoming, fun loving environment for all types of movers! The students will work on two separate dance routines (one Ballet and one Jazz) to then perform on stage in the 2018 BBIS Summer Fest and/or in an informal performance during the class time at the end of the Term. Attire is extremely important! It should consist of tight fitting fitness clothing to bring awareness to alignment within the body. Jeans are not permitted. Creative Writing Writing is one of the most important skills a student can learn. Although this course seeks to introduce

students in the basics of creative writing, the course is highly recommended to any student who seeks to

learn how to better communicate using the written form. The two main components of this course are

reading comprehension and writing. This course aims at supporting the school’s curriculum by helping

students improve their close reading abilities, a fundamental skill for the IB program at the same time as

the students get a chance to discover the joy of creative writing. Small excerpts from important texts will

also be read in the session in order to show by matter of example what the elements that make up a good

story are, how to develop strong characters and construct a coherent storyline.

This course will provide a space for beginner writers to come together to exchange their work. This

practice of reading in front of others will help students not only improve their oral skills and self -

confidence but it also, by encountering first hand the reaction and opinions of their peers, participants

will learn to detect what elements do and don't work in a story. Throughout the course students will also

perform different kinds of writing exercises, aimed at gaining speed, helping with the usual writer's block,

prompting ideas and finding one's own tone and voice.

Dance Through a balance of high energy and soft, emotional movement research, students will gain a basic understanding of one of the most socially influential styles falling under the umbrella of ContemporaryDance. We will begin the first day with contemporary jazz, then the class will be structured to move biweekly through 34 different genres of dance, to be decided amongst the group on the first day based on interest. These options include contemporary ballet, lyrical, musical theater, classical jazz, contemporary jazz, hiphop, and improvisation/choreography. Students will gain self confidence, body awareness, musicality, and lead an active lifestyle. Through each genre, students will learn proper techniques including extensions, isolations, balance, and strength as well as more advanced turns, leaps, and jumps. The students will work on small dance routines for each genre studied and, if the class wishes, these can later be showcased on a stage at the 2018 BBIS Summerfest and/or in an informal performance during the class time at the end of the Term. This course is aimed to address beginner/intermediate level students. Attire should be tight fitting and should not be restricting. Jeans are not permitted. Footwear can include dance shoes (preferable) or solid colored socks. Hair should be pulled back for each class. This course is open to females and males. * All students are permitted one trial class. If they do not wish to continue or if the class is full, the parents are still obligated to pay 16€ via bank transfer to the teacher directly. * For students who have taken this ECA in previous Terms: Class structure stays the same with new warm ups, music, learned material, and dance combinations. * No class held on May 11th or on May 18th. This has already been included in the price.

Film Making Ever wonder how classic stories such as CS Lewis´ The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe` became a film?

Ever wonder what it´s like to simply make a film from scratch? Every week we will wonder, brainstorm,

and then make. Starting with short stories written by us in groups of 2-3 people, we will learn to turn

written prose into script format. In Class, we will read short scripts, watch short films, and then become

the maker ourselves. Every week a group will have turned their story into a short script and every other

week, other students in the class can take on other roles such as: producer, script consultant, aspiring

directors and filmmakers to help their colleagues complete their work. Beyond the practice of writing film,

students will learn to navigate and grow from collaboration. Let`s make movies!

Role Playing Games Club (RPG Club) The BBIS Role Playing Games Club (RPG Club) meets once a week. It was founded by IB CAS students in

2012 and is organised by Mr Gregory, who supervises the club and runs some of the games. We offer

members a chance to draw upon their imaginations (rather than their computers) to play table top

strategic games like classic old school “pen & paper” role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons

(D&D), using dice and miniatures. Students are responsible for purchasing their own figures, dice, drinks

and snacks, although you will not initially need anything, other than snacks and drinks. Free hardcopies

and pdf’s will be available for all RPG gaming rules on Managebac, which we al so use for communicating

and tracking our adventures and character development. Gaming options for this year currently include:

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition & Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. The groups can also play:

Warhammer Fantasy RPG, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer 40k, Dungeons and Dragons,

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1st ed – 5th ed), Traveller, Mega Traveller, Mutant Futures and Shadowrun.

We are currently playing two groups who are playing Advanced Labyrinth Lord (AD&D 1e), which are being

run by Tim and Leo, a 5th Edition D&D group run by Andy, and the other group is playing Traveller, a Sci-

Fi setting, which is run by Mr. Gregory. The group currently has two members of staff, 23 members who

are girls and boys, from grades 6-12. Come along and join us for an afternoon of creativity, high fantasy

and science fiction. The sessions normally run from 15:00 until 17:30 and students who wish to stay

until 17:30 will be required to either be picked up or get home independently of the late bus. All

students under 16 years of age will require parental permission in order to do this. Preferential places

will be given to last terms members who wish to remain in the club, but new members are very welcome.

Word-a-Day creating club Words are the building blocks of language and expressing thought. The aim of this group is to help our community learn more ordinary midrange words. When a student knows more words, comprehension improves, literacy improves, and writing improves. What we do: Students create a display for a word with easy to understand definition(s), synonyms and translations of the word in 9 other languages. These words are published daily on our display screens around the school. We meet every two weeks during Monday lunch to discuss the words, glitches and plan events. Students wanting to create words for the display screens for the whole school are invited to join the group. Join our growing numbers where we mince words.

The 2018 Bambini Runs--15 September 2018 The BMW Berlin Marathon offers the Bambini running series for elementary school children in Berlin. The idea behind the Bambini Running series is “Kids love to move”. Kids are to be introduced to sports through play. Running as the basis of movement is a great way to start. After taking their first steps, children explore the world around them by walking and running. The Bambini Running series offers the perfect space for kids to continue to develop their natural desire to move: Kids can come together with their friends and families and have fun being active in sports at seven different running events. They can participate in one Bambini race or as many as they want, they can come prepared or just come as they are and they can run as fast or slow as they want. Whatever they want, no times will be kept, no rankings listed – it is just about having fun! The Bambinis thus experience sport as something unstressed and positive. And without even noticing it, they are learning values through sport such community, fairness, continuity, self-initiative and self-confidence, taking their own personal development one step further. The first race begins at 11am. We will meet at 10:40 for a team photo, location TBA. Parents are responsible for transport to and from the event. All runners should wear their BBIS sport clothes. After each race, parents can leave with their children; you do not need to stay for all the races. The Bambini races (either 500m or 1000m) are for children up to 10 years old. The age groups are as follows:

Age 0-4y 500m (parents can run with their children –strollers/baby carriers included)

singing teacher. She graduated from

the Music College in Weimar in

Lyrical singing and Functional vocal

pedagogy (Rabine Method).

Afterwards she successfully

completed one year of Baroque

Singing in Naples/ Italy and studied

Acting in Berlin. She won the

Interpretation Prize of the opera

festival “Oper-Oder-Spree” 2009

and in 2010 she was finalist in the 8th

international Baroque singing

competition Francesco Provenzale in

Naples. As a soloist she has a large repertoire of Oratories, Opera arias and Baroque music and performs

at festivals and opera houses in Europe (Paris, Lille, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Berlin). Her focus

is on the Baroque and Classical repertoire and Lied.

She is a passionate and experienced vocal coach and teaches at the „Singakademie zu Berlin“ and at BBIS.

Functional voice training is an approach, which reduces pressure in the production of sound to a minimum,

while consistently orientating itself towards the body’s natural physiological functioning. A new

relationship between sound and body allows a rich, self - sustaining sound to develop, as well as great

flexibility and assurance while music- making or speaking.

Johannes Haage

ELECTRIC & ACOUSTIC GUITAR, ELECTRIC BASS

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Johannes Haage started playing music on violin from age 5, but switched to guitar about eight years later. As a high-school exchange student in Portland, Oregon he started playing jazz regularly and continued to do so back home. He started his college education at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, but soon transferred to Berlin to successfully finish his studies with Diplomas both in music performance (popular and classical) and education at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler.

Over the years his travels playing and studying music took him to places like the Center of the Arts in Banff, Canada, and New York City where he had the chance to play with and deepen his studies with Bill Frisell, Brad Shepik, Ben Monder, Mark Turner, Dave Douglas, Drew Gress, Ralph Alessi and many others. In Berlin he has been a very active member of the vital music scene since moving there in 2002, playing with many different musicians like Ben Kraef, Philipp Gropper, Richard Koch, Oli Steidle, the SLOWTRIO w/ Simon Bauer & Brendan Dougherty, Diego Pinera, Christian Ugurel and many more. The Johannes Haage Trio, featuring Andreas Lang on bass and Sebastian Merk on drums, released the critically acclaimed album „Johannes Haage Trio plays Marlene Dietrich“ on Meta Records in late 2010. Besides the many loose collaborations and gigs as sideman he currently enjoys very much playing in a collaborative Trio with bassist Matthias Pichler and drummer Joe Smith, who released their debut Album "Drift" in 2016 on shoebill music. Johannes has taught instrumental music lessons professionally for nearly twenty years and has been part of the BBIS Co-Curricular music staff for the last ten. Regardless of the level of a student and style of music in focus, his goal in teaching is always to inspire the students’ own inherent creativity via improvisation, composition and playing with other musicians, but also to give the student a solid foundation in instrumental technique, music theory, music notation and the stylistic history of the instrument.

He has been coordinating the Co-Curricular Music Program since 2015.
