The Twinning Call

• Part of the Horizon 2020 work programme• Topic: „Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation”• Coordination and Support Action (CSA)

• Challenge: to address networking gaps and deficiencies between the research institutions of the low performing Member States and regions and internationally-leading counterparts at EU level.

• Scope: Twinning aims at significantly strengthening a defined field of research in a particular knowledge institution by creating a link between this institution and at least two internationally-leading research institutions in other Member States.

EBSIS – Event Based Systems in Iaşi

Main Objective:

To raise the research profile of the initiating institution, Facultyof Computer Science, UAIC, Romania by extending the ground base for, and strengthening a new research field, event based systems - security, dependability and scalability.

Objective was chosen in relation with the partners expertise and in connection with the regional Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) key priority ICT topics identified for Romania (EC S3 platform, UEFISCDI 2013 foresight exercise).

EBSIS – Targeted Research Field

Event Based Systems covers a large umbrella of solutions where system components communicate using a producer/consumer paradigm.

Basic architectural characteristics:

• The event: an observable occurrence that takes place at the level of a component in the system, which is of interest for other components.

• A notification describing the event is generated by a producer following the event occurence, and distributed to interested consumers through a middleware mediator service.

EBSIS – Targeted Research Field

Key architectural aspect - communication between consumers and producers is decoupled by the intermediary middleware:

• producers and consumers for a specific event are not necesarilly aware of each other

• the middleware can offer complex processing services on notification event data before delivery

• decoupling permits connection of various heterogeneous components in a complex distributed system

EBSIS – Targeted Field: use cases

Complex Event Processing (CEP) platforms:

• Mediator service is responsible of complex analysis of streams of information, from different sources over various periods of time

7/17

• Example: finance area for algorithmic stock trading (market activity analysis)

• Example: IoT applications in intelligent houses (analysing sensor data for automated functionalities)

EBSIS – Targeted Field: use cases

Real time Big Data processing:

• Mediator service is responsible with extracting aggregated information in real-time on vast amounts of data received as event streams

• Example: • Large scale experimental

infrastructures• Storage for post-processing is an

issue • Data is produced at high rates in

multiple sites 8/17

EBSIS – Targeted Field: use cases

Publish/Subscribe systems:

• Mediator service is responsible with published information dissemination to sets of clients selectively interested in parts of the published data

• Example: distributed service offered by a broker overlay for investors interested in stock market variations
