The intarsia patterns you'll see on the next page are for you to use and enjoy.
You'll love building these woodworking projects for yourself or if you sell intarsia, add these to your line.
Download as many free patterns or templates as you can use, or just view them for inspiration for your own creativity.
You'll notice that my intarsia is different from what you normally see, you may choose to follow my style or easily build these patterns to your own style of woodworking.
Much of my early work was building inlaid tables, that is how my style developed. More recently I've used intarsia as decoration on entertainment centers, armoire's, gun cabinets, credenzas and walls.

Select patterns in electronic format or
paper version atbottom of this page.
The original Intarsia book from Gekko Timbers
A 40 page booklet with over 50 black and white photos, it is the perfect introduction to this fascinating wood art.
The problem is that the guy who wrote the book, me, is also writing this web site so how can you believe a word you ask yourself.
Well just so you can judge for yourself I have reproduced the nitty gritty chapter on exactly how to make an intarsia. I've left out the photos for the sake of a quick download.
Making an Intarsia.
A Quick Guide.
1. Make three copies of the pattern. 2. Tape one copy to a backing board. 3. Keep one copy for reference. 4. Cut up the third copy into the different wood colours and
grain directions. 5. Choose suitable timber. 6. Glue cut up pattern pieces to timber. 7. Cut out the timber pieces. 8. Assemble these pieces on the plan on the backing board and
check how well they fit together. 9. Trim to get a good fit.
10. Cut backing ply and risers for any raised areas. 11. Sand individual pieces. 12. Glue pieces onto backing. 13. Screw hangers on the back. 14. Apply finish. 15. Gasping time.
And that's all there is to it.The following pages have lots of details.

How to Master the Art of Intarsia - $9.90AUD : Fantastic Woodworking and Intarsia Patterns
If all else fails read the instructions.
1. Copy patterns.I usually make three copies of the pattern. Our plans are generally on A3 or A2 paper (A2 is twice as big as A3). Most photocopiers can handle A3. If your plan is larger then photocopy each section in turn and tape them together. They never seem to match exactly but in practice it isn't a problem. Just redraw any lines that don't quite meet at the join. Or you can go to your specialist photocopy shop and get the larger sizes copied in one hit. Put away your original. Only use the copies during construction.
2. Tape down one copy on to a sheet of plywood. The second copy is to be cut up into little pieces.
3. The third is for later.
4. Cut out patterns. Before taking up the scissors check the notes on the plan.Cut up the second copy carefully into the individual pieces of the design. These you are going to glue onto your timber as your cutting pattern. If two or more adjacent sections are the same colour and have the same grain direction they can be left as one piece. Place the pieces into groups of the same colour. You'll also notice on the plan that each piece has a number written on it which is the suggested thickness of the timber to use in millimetres. This is only a guide. You can use whatever thickness you like, thicker or thinner but this figure works well. A second number e.g. 20R indicates riser height. More on this later. Grain direction is also shown on most pieces as a double headed arrow.
5. Choose timber. Now you have individual pieces of paper which have to be glued onto timber of the appropriate colour. Match up grain direction. Look for areas in the timber with unusual grain patterns and try to incorporate any suitable sections in order to enhance the overall effect. Curved grain will enhance a curved area.
6. Glue patterns. To glue the paper down onto the timber you can use P.V.A. wood glue spread thinly or paper paste or fast drying multi-purpose clear spray adhesive available from art supply shops.
7. Cutting out.Off to the bandsaw, scroll saw.In order to get a good fit between the pieces all the cuts must be square. Now is the time to check your blade and to make a couple of practice cuts to make sure everything is right. The saw will leave a slight burr on the underside of the timber. I clean this off with an orbital sander or a piece of sandpaper on a block of wood to make sure the timber sits flat on the saw table.Mark with a wiggly line any edges that will not have to match up with another piece of timber in the final design. You don't need to be quite so careful with these cuts.Ideally your cut should follow the edge of the paper template exactly. Easier said than done. If you end up with your wooden pieces slightly larger than they should be all these errors add up and the whole picture expands alarmingly. This expansion is never even so the pieces don't fit together either.

How to Master the Art of Intarsia - $9.90AUD : Fantastic Woodworking and Intarsia Patterns
Much better to have the individual pieces very slightly undersize. Small gaps are hardly noticeable especially if they are even.
8. Check the fit. Now is the time to judge your expertise on the bandsaw. Set out all the pieces on the master plan that you taped to the sheet of plywood. They don't all fit together perfectly? Join the club. Now is the time for the careful use of Stanley knife, chisel and sandpaper to ease those tight spots. Try for an even fit. A large gap at this end of a join varying to a tight squeeze at that end is very obvious.
9. The third dimension. Areas are raised by placing a piece of plywood underneath. The thickness of this plywood is noted on the plan. (The R number). Cut this plywood slightly smaller than the area to be raised. I often use 4mm ply and then add small wooden risers underneath to bring it to the correct height. Note - not all plans have raised areas.
10. Sanding. At this stage you can start to put some shape into your project. Some pieces will need to be sanded individually while for others it will be easier to sand them in a block. Such areas could be the body of an animal which is going to end up all on the same level. Cut a plywood template slightly smaller than the area to be sanded. Stick the pieces onto the template using double sided carpet tape. For the initial sanding, especially if there is a lot of wood to remove, I like to use 60 grit sandpaper (with softer timbers 80 grit is fine). The template can be held in a vice, or placed on a non slip mat on the workbench, or held in your hand if you are using a drum sander. After this initial sanding fit the whole picture back together and check that pieces flow smoothly into one another. Having the third copy of the pattern helps here.If everything looks fine complete the sanding. I use progressively finer sandpaper, usually 80, 120 and finish off with 180 grit. Some of the harder timbers may need finishing with a finer grit, say up to 240 or even 320 to remove all trace of sanding. This is when a flap sander proves it's worth.I sand small inside curves with rolled up sandpaper. You will remember that some of the pieces may still need to be cut into smaller sections. Now is the time. Unfortunately in order to do the sanding the paper template had to be removed.Either stick it back on or draw the lines freehand. Cut this with the narrowest blade available, the scroll saw is best. At least you can be sure that these pieces will fit exactly. As the final step in the sanding all edges should be very slightly rounded over. This can be done with 180 grit on the orbital sander or by hand or most easily with a flap sander. This helps enormously to disguise any cutting errors.
Final Fitting Hold your breath, cross your fingers and check the fit of your masterpiece. Any extra adjustments need to be made now. If everything seems OK then it is time for gluing.
11. Glue up.Particular care has to be taken at this stage. A methodical approach will save some nervous tension later on. When that glue has dried, which doesn't take long, mistakes are extremely difficult to correct. Cut a backing board from 4mm. plywood a few millimetres smaller than the overall size. I use structural ply because it is a darker colour than pine ply. Any gaps are much less obvious on the darker background. Place the pieces together on the backing board. Even if you carefully start at one end, fitting the pieces together and

gluing them down, the complete picture can become distorted. What we need are some guidelines to keep the correct dimensions. If the design is framed, then gluing the frame down first also helps. Another way is to place all the parts on the board, carefully pull out some of the larger pieces and glue them down first. With these as guides the rest of the pieces will fit in around them. Try to make any gaps as even as possible. When applying glue, dab spots on the back of the pieces but not too close to the edges.
12. Hanger. When the glue is dry screw a hanger on to the back. I use either crocodile hangers or D clips and plastic coated wire. Available from art framing shops.I often make up a small timber sample board and glue it onto the back.
13. Applying a finish.I have sprayed my intarsias with lacquer, which is quick and easy and hand rubbed oil finishes, which takes a lot longer. I feel the oil gives a much improved finish which more than compensates for the extra time involved.I use two coats of oil finish followed by one or two coats of wax polish. Apply the oil with a soft cloth using a small paint brush to get into all the nooks and crannies. After a few minutes wipe off any excess oil. When all the oil has soaked in and the surface of the wood is dry it's time for a second coat. This can take from a few hours to overnight depending on the weather and the species of timber.Use the polish sparingly. Make sure no specks of polish remain stuck in any gaps.
14. Find a friend and prepare yourself for the gasps of astonishment when they see your intarsia for the first time.

Notes:You'll find that a most of my intarsia patterns don't have a lot of pieces.
I try to keep it simple. Sometimes intarsia pictures are over worked with too many pieces of wood .
Use no more pieces than are necessary to depict the objects story, let the grain of the wood do the work, instead of using more pieces.
I try to look for production output as well as a beautiful design.

This has been my best selling theme, it has been used on cabinet doors and many wall hangings.
The background mountains are inlaid, foreground mountains are three step overlay with a carved 3-D walnut branch (acts as a
handle on cabinets) the tree line and eagle are one step overlay. This is a flat panel design, only the branch is
contoured and carved. All of the wood is stained.

Triple Dolphin Intarsia Pattern $9.90AUD $7.92AUD
This is the design that gives you the most bangs per buck. And it only has two contrasting timbers. Okay three, if you count the eyes. Intarsia doesn't come any simpler than this but just look at what you end up with. A 3D wooden sculpture that is 30 inches long straight off the plan. You make Dad, Mum and baby separately and glue them on top of each other. I have made many baby dolphins at workshop demos and my record is 36mins from go to whoa. Not much longer for Mom and Dad.
This comprehensive, full size, pattern will take you step by step through the construction process.

Angel Fish Intarsia Pattern $6.60AUD
These Angel Fish are one of my favourite projects. Much of the impact of this great design relies on the contrast between the colours of the timbers. So now is the time to hunt out those extra colourful scraps of timber that you have been hiding away for something special. The front fish sits on top of the partial background fish. Or you could simplify the design and just make the front fish.
This comprehensive, full size, pattern will take you step by step through the construction process.

The Australian Woodworker magazine doesn't think the book is too bad.
"It's an attractive book in full colour, with lots of good photographs (and we mean lots!). The author, the very
talented Intarsia artist Steve Bundred, definitely believes in the theory that a picture is worth a thousand words, and in this instance it works."
Australian Woodworker magazine
Step by step photos make construction a breeze Even if you have never had a go at Intarsia before you will soon be up and running with the help of this remarkable tome. Patterns for Nine Projects with step by step instructions are included in the book. The 9 included patterns, shown on the right, are graded from very simple to a bit more difficult, but not too tricky. Each project builds on the previous one and introduces new concepts one at a time. For instance

frame ● and the Bikie takes the 3D effect to its intarsia limit

Egret Mirror Intarsia Book Project
This is a beautiful design that never fails to get gasps of amazement when people (potential customers?) see it for the first time. This design also uses layering which makes it a lot easier than it looks. The layers are made separately and glued on top of each other.
1. The mirror frame. This is a conventional circular frame which is rebated for the glass
2. The bird. All the white bits are cut out of one piece of timber and therefore fit together again easily
3. Lily pads 4. Flowers
You just glue the layers on top of each other. Step by step instructions in the book with full cover photos showing close up details of any tricky bits.
Detailed instructions and photos will guide you through every stage of construction.

Bikie Intarsia Book Project
This design is a lot easier than it may look at first glance.
It is made up of 4 separate layers each of which is easy to make but combine to make a stunning intarsia.
1. The man himself. Those sunnies avoid any intricate detail around the eyes as well as making him look "real cool"
2. Handlebars, fuel tank and engine block
3. Frame and front forks4. Front wheel
You just glue the layers on top of each other and Roberts your Aunty.
The book Intarsia down Under includes separate patterns for each of the 4 levels.
You also get step by step instructions that are illustrated with over 20 close up colour photos of each stage of the construction process.
Detailed instructions and photos will guide you through every stage of construction.

Bikie Intarsia Book Project : Fantastic Woodworking and Intarsia
We stopped off at a country pub recently on our way back home from the big smoke. And look what one of the locals had painted on the wall behind the bar!I had a finished intarsia Bikie in the car with me so I got it out and showed it to the owners. I couldn't persuade them to buy it but I did sell them a copy of my book!

Well what can I say , I got carried away on finishing up and didn't take enough pictures of the top construction. Notice the cloth liner
glued up on 1/8" hardboard with trim on top of it. I put a rubber seal around the top of the box so the lid would be air tight.
I used two lid supports so the lid will stay at any angle.

Koala Mum Intarsia Book Project
Now you are up to five different timbers and a little more detail in the design.
But this is still a project that even the complete beginner is going to find very straightforward.
And you will have to admit that Mum does have attitude!
There are plenty of handy tips in the book including how to make the round plugs for Mum's eyes. No lathe needed.
Baby's eyes are burnt on with a home made pyrography pen. A piece of bent wire and a candle? Too easy.

Deckchair Kangaroo Intarsia Book Project
A fellow Aussie is making one of these life size, 5ft long, and leaning it against the wall of his verandah so he will always have company when he is enjoying his sundowner after a hard days work.
This Dechchair Kangaroo project, included in the book Intarsia Down Under, introduces the idea of using the third dimension in intarsia.
This is as easy as glueing the deckchair frame on top of the kangaroo but it adds that extra bit of interest to the design.
This is taken to much greater limits in the Bikie project at the end of the book. He has 4 separate layers that give a great 3D effect.
Detailed instructions and photos will guide you through every stage of construction.

Swaggy Intarsia Book Project
This design is a lot easier than it may look at first glance.
The face is cut from one piece of timber which is divided up to give all those wrinkles. As they were cut from one piece of timber they will all fit back together again beautifully.
The perfect joins between the different coloured woods in the beard are done with double cutting. This is explained fully in the book but it's not rocket science so you won't have any difficulty.
Detailed instructions and photos will guide you through every stage of construction.

Swaggy Intarsia Book Project : Fantastic Woodworking and Intarsia
Don't get hung up on the 87 pieces. Initially all you have to fit together is 30 pieces. The rest of them are created when you divide up these larger sections with your saw. And of course all these smaller pieces fit together perfectly because of how they were cut out.
This is a small section of the accurate computer drawn plan included in the book
You can enlarge it or reduce it on a photocopier.
Make it bigger and you will need more timber.
Reduce the size and you may need tweezers to pick uo some of the smaller pieces. I've seen a miniature of this design that looked stunning.
The complete plan is included in the book
Intarsia Down Under.
Some Sample Timbers used in this piece
You will need seven different timbers. Here are some of the ones I used.

Wombat Intarsia Pattern $6.60AUD
Wombats are nocturnal so this old fellow is relaxing in the light of the moon. Hence the dark sky and the bright orb up on high.I've never actually seen a wombat sitting like this but then I don't very often wander through the bush in the dark. But if I did I'm sure I'd see one.
A pretty easy intarsia. Make the wombat separately and glue her on the background.

Spotty Fish Intarsia Pattern $6.60AUD
Now what should we call a design that is a fish with a lot of spots? I know! Why don't we call it the Spotty Fish. And who said marketing was difficult?Just 34 pieces makes for an easy project. Apart from the 83 spots that is. I can't believe it has that many. You're right, this one doesn't. Only 61 on this old fellow. I left some out. But the pattern has 83. Honest.
The instructions have a couple of "no lathe" ways of making all those spots. Using plug cutters for instance. Or just a drill and a sander. Full details on the pattern.
This comprehensive, full size, pattern will take you step by step through the construction process.
Finished intarsia size 220mm x 400mm (9" x 16")
Number of pieces 34 + 83 spots
With the pattern and instructions you will easily be able to complete this happy, but spotty, fish

Numbat Intarsia Pattern $6.60AUD
This is one of Australia's lesser known, but extremely attractive, marsupials. The Numbat or Banded Anteater is the faunal emblem of the state of Western Australia. The stripes and the fluffy tail are both easy to replicate with intarsia. Double cutting makes short work of those stripes.
I remember being very pleasantly surprised after completing the first prototype. It had worked out so well. Highly recommended.
This comprehensive, full size, pattern will take you step by step through the construction process.
Finished intarsia size 280mm x 400mm (11" x 16")

Ebonizing and Bleaching Timber
This article is taken from my book "Intarsia Down Under". Just one of the many tips and tricks that you will find throughout this informative intarsia bible.
The most difficult wood colours to find are very light and very dark. Here is a way of getting these colours without using stains.I only did a very brief experiment so you will need to research more information and try it out yourself on different timber species.
RED CEDAR NATURALI cut a length of red cedar into three squares. This is what it started off looking like.
RED CEDAR EBONISED
Ebonising solution is created by placing steel wool in white vinegar. The steel wool will dissolve in the solution and can be painted onto timber to ebonise it. This piece was immersed in the mixture overnight. The solution reacts with the tannins in the timber turning it a blue/black which will go a deep black when the final finish is applied. Although I haven’t tried it this process can be reversed by applying lemon juice to the wood. Some interesting effects can be achieved by selectively removing the ebonising.

Ebonizing and Bleaching Timber : Fantastic Woodworking and Intarsia
This is the piece that spent 24 hours in household chlorine bleach.
Both the bleaching and ebonising were only skin deep after this short experiment. You would need to completely finish off the intarsia pieces before giving them this treatment.

Step by step photos make construction a breezeEven if you have never had a go at Intarsia before you will soon be up and running with the help of this remarkable tome.
Patterns for Nine Projects with step by step instructions are included in the book. The 9 included patterns, shown on the right, are graded from very simple to a bit more difficult, but not too tricky. Each project builds on the previous one and introduces new concepts one at a time. For instance
● The first couple of projects, the Flying Kangaroo and the Wallaby, use one timber
● The Koala Mum with Baby and the Koala Dad have more timbers
● The Lazy Kangaroo begins a 3D effect
● The Swaggy introduces double cutting
● The Egret Mirror incorporates other woodworking skills to make the circular frame
● and the Bikie takes the 3D effect to its intarsia limit
