News From Holland - Chere Burger: Rider with Ambition

This article was on the KFPS website just before the WEG started in August... we are delighted and excited to have had a Friesian at the WEG!!

The combination Cheré Burger and Anders 451 (Adel 357) has been selected onto the South African dressage team for the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France this August.

A great opportunity therefore to get to know this talented and ambitious horsewoman.

Can you tell us something about your first experiences in the sport?

‘My horsey career began in 1990 when I was seven years old. I had a preference for jumping in those days.

My interest in dressage was sparkled in 2001 when I attended the South African Equestrian Academy to complete the first stage of my education as an instructor.

In 2005 I became stable manager and home rider at the Adelprag Friesian Stud.’

How did you go about becoming a professional rider?

‘In 2009 Niekie Pienaar and I bought a schoolmaster at Intermédiaire II/Grand Prix level to help me advance and develop my riding skills.

That was Willem V. Sport (Nykle 309 x Hearke 254, also known as Watch me). We also purchased Arjen (Jasper 366, who is also Jorrit’s sire x Feitse 293) as a prospective talent. By now we have made it to Grand Prix level.

In 2012 Anders 451 joined the team. I have always been convinced that if you work towards a certain goal in life and you work really hard dedicating all your energy, talent and focus to this goal then success will come.’

News From Holland - Chere Burger: Rider with Ambition

Is there any horse that is special to you?

‘Most special for me, that must be Adelprag Arjen. He was the first horse that I started in the higher levels of dressage and together we won the South African Dressage Championships in three consecutive years, in 2011, 2012 and 2013.’

What do you like about the Friesian horse?

‘Friesians are just so cooperative and have such a forgiving nature. Once you have gained their confidence they will do all that is within their power to please you.

Because of their impressive appearance and friendly character it is a very unique breed to work with. Moreover, Friesians are also particularly intelligent horses.’

How is Anders 451 progressing?

‘Working with Anders 451 is a real treat. For me he was the first horse that I could compete with at international shows. Before Anders I never even had the opportunity to ride a studbook stallion.

When I found myself in a position to buy Anders I jumped at the chance because he could just be my ticket to qualify for the

World Equestrian Games with a Friesian horse.

Peter Spahn has dedicated an awful lot of his time and energy to help us get started.

Sometimes I am staying in Europe for weeks on end and I do find it quite difficult to leave my home and horses behind in South Africa for such long periods, but it is something I have to do.

Right now Anders is stabled in Hooge Mierde at the ‘Academy Bartels’ where I am being coached by Tineke Bartels and Imke Schellekens-Bartels.’

How are you getting on with your training?

‘The very first competition was quite a stressful affair. I simply had no idea what it would be like and what to expect. Step by step Anders and I are building our partnership.

Achieving our first qualification point for the World Equestrian Games in Brno, the Czech Republic, was amazing. We secured our second point in the Netherlands and since then Anders and I have been selected for the South African dressage team that will represent our country in France.

Imke Schellekens-Bartels has agreed to come along to help us. I for my part am ready to do my utmost to perform really well in August’, Cheré Burger says determinedly.Source: KFPS Website

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Hoof AbscessesW i t h t h e m u d d y w i n t e r weather well and truly here, I have heard of numerous horses with hoof abscesses, and thought this month I would talk a bit more about what they are and what you can do about them!! :)

So firstly, to understand what a hoof abscess is, you need to have a bit of

knowledge about the structure of the hoof.

Basically the hoof is like the last part of a human finger, covered in a tough fingernail... the hoof capsule. The hoof c a p s u l e p r o t e c t s m a n y important structures within the hoof, including the various bones and tendons, blood vessels and nerves. What you need to remember is that like a fingernail, the hoof capsule

is not connected to the rest of the hoof by bones or tendons, but by interlocking bits of tissue called laminae.

So what is a hoof abscess?

In it’s most basic form, it is an infection which is in the sensitive laminae of the hoof ( that connects the hoof capsule to the rest of the hoof). This leads to a build up of pus inside the rigid hoof c a p s u l e , a n d c a u s e s lameness because this build up causes pressure, and therefore pain!

What are the signs?

Generally, your horse will be fine one day, and then the next really, really lame... I have seen some horses on 3 legs which causes a bit of a panic I can tell you!! :)

The hoof might also feel warm to touch, and you can feel a pounding pulse in the back of the hoof (called a digital pulse).

Ok, so you suspect that your horse has a hoof

abscess - what do you do to diagnose the problem

and therefore treat it?

Generally you will need to get your vet out, or a good farrier that will apply hoof testers to the area to determine where

the hoof abscess is... drainage is the key to relieving the pressure in the abscess, and getting rid of the infection, so treatment usually consists of digging a hole through the base of the foot near where t h e h o o f t e s t e r s h a v e determined the abscess is s i t t i n g w i t h i n t h e h o o f capsule... this creates an outlet for the pus to come out, and the vet or farrier may also want to apply a poultice which will prevent anything getting in from the outside, while at the same time drawing out the infection.

Once you have managed to lance the abscess, and it is draining, your horse will be much more comfortable... and your vet may put your horse on antibiotics for a couple of days to p revent fu r ther i n fec t i on , as we l l as a painkiller like bute so that it is comfortable.

It’s a good idea to make sure your horse is up to date in

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Hoof Abscesses vaccinations, as if the abscess is caused by a nail from a shoe being nailed too far in (rather than just in t h e h o o f c a p s u l e ) o r another fore ign meta l object, tetanus is a real possibility!

So now that you know what they are and how to treat them, how do

you prevent a hoof abscess in the first

place?

As I mentioned above... hoof abscesses are most common during wetter periods, when it is muddy and hoovers are standing in the wet and mud all day.

In conditions like these during the winter months, p reven t ion i s d i f f i cu l t because generally every paddock is the same, and moving a horse into drier condi t ions is jus t not possible.

So the best that you can do during the wet months, is to make sure you maintain good hoof care - make sure the farrier comes out and trims/shoes your horse regu la r l y. I t i s r ea l l y important to seek treatment from your vet or farrier as soon as you suspect a hoof a b s c e s s , a s m o s t secondary problems such as the infection extending deeper into the hoof and affecting other structures

such as the pedal bone, occur when there has been a delay in the treatment of the initial abscess.

If you have any questions about foot abscesses, or if you would like to ask a question that I can answer in a future article, make sure you email me at [email protected]

Kate Langdon

Hi Friesian lovers!!!! :)

How is your riding going?

Happy Spring!! I hope you have had a wonderful winter, and you are looking forward to achieving all your spring goals.

Last month was a SUPER month! Fiji was so fun... especially with my super team! Loved spending it with the the Kate’s, or “Kate Squared” as they like to be called :) Make sure you look at our photos on page 31!

I am very excited about the spring competition season.. getting back out there and competing Abe in the Grand Prix, Dante is nearly ready for a Medium start, another month I think.

It is time to find a new forever home for Zeus... this is a fantastic opportunity for someone to take home a purebred Friesian trained up to Medium level dressage - he’s on page 11 if you need more information.. and if he doesn’t sell, he will also come out Medium in October.

I would like to welcome Lauren, Sanja and Tegan to the Ebony Park family - we can’t wait to see you out there in a few years with your Ebony Park horses!

It’s all been happening this month - I would like to extend a warm welcome to Alex and Danielle to the Ebony Park team, as well as JA Photographics as our new sponsor! Make sure you take a peek at the photo gallery on page 32 for some of Jess’ fantastic photos of the Ebony Park boys so far.

I would like to say a big thanks to Kate for her work on the website - if you haven’t seen it yet, we have just launched our revamped, updated website - go to www.ebonyparkstud.com.au to check it out now, and look at page 21-28 for an explanation on how to navigate around the website.

breeding permitted stallion Ebony Park Elko.

DOB: 22/11/2007Height: 16.1hh

KFPS Registration Number: AU0360 0420 0706 076

Zeus is Elko’s first purebred son that we bred right here at Ebony Park, and we have eagerly been waiting the years until he was old enough to work. Turning 7 this year, he has already competed up to Elementary level dressage,

before we decided to use him as a dressage lesson horse for the last 12 months, as he was so quiet!

He has now been back in work training at Medium level dressage, he has almost figured out how to do

clean flying changes – we think they will be awesome in the next month, and he will be ready to compete.

Zeus is a delight to work with, having an exceptional canter just like his father, and a swinging, easy trot, and we are very excited to offer this rare opportunity, to the

right person, to own such a fabulous horse!

Tash’s Training Tip - I Want ToI want to...

I hate those words!

I know! Hate is a strong word! And I am sure you are wondering why do I feel so strongly about three teeny tiny words. Actually - I don’t have a problem with the word ‘I’ and the word ‘to’. Just a problem with the word ‘want’.

I hear the word ‘want’ a lot.

I want to ride

I want to lose weight

I want to compete

I want to be better

I want to get up early

…..

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STOP LYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don’t!!!!!!! If you did you WOULD!

The biggest concept you have to learn to accept is …

Are you ready for it?!?!!?

…. Are you sure?!?!?!

OK!

You have the life you want.

N o i f s , n o b u t s , n o exceptions.

You can disagree with me on this - a lot of people do! And I’m not saying I am r ight ! ! ! ! ! How would I know?!?!?!

But I do know this ….

My life is more enriched, more successful, more p r o d u c t i v e a n d m o r e fulfilled, when I live by this principle.

I said before you have to stop lying! If you say you want to ride, but you don’t. Then that is lying. Now I know you are saying no - I do REALLY REALLY want to ride! Ok, I do believe you, BUT you are deleting t h e R E S T o f t h e information out! If you want to ride but don’t, you must s a y t h e c o m p l e t e sentence ...

I want to ride... but I want to sleep in my bed more, so I am choosing sleep over riding.

Or - I want to ride... but I want to sit at home on the couch watching TV more, so I am choosing that today.

Or to really make you squirm: I want to ride, and b e a n a m a z i n g s o f t , flexible, centered, balanced rider on a big moving, through horse, that I have created through riding him c o n s i s t e n t l y a n d constantly... but I also want to stay on the couch doing nothing to progress my r i d i n g a n d s u c c e s s , engaging in a mindless activity like watching TV, which will do nothing to further me in regards to the success fu l , engaged , happy life I want to lead! So I am consciously going ahead to choose TV, which will take me further away from what I actually want, rather than take action towards the life I want to lead...!

Now let’s be honest, if you s a i d t h e a b o v e conversation with yourself – w h o w o u l d c h o o s e riding? And who would choose TV?

I KNOW you would choose to r ide ! Because you haven’t lied! You have given yourself ALL the information to make a

Ebony Park Friesian Magazine September 2014 13

Tash’s Training Tip - I Want Toconscious and valuable decision, which will allow you to consciously choose which life you want to create.

The problem is - we go t h r o u g h o u r l i f e s leepwalk ing. We are o p e r a t i n g o n o u r unconscious thoughts and emotions, rather t h a n s t o p p i n g a n d l og i ca l l y mak ing a choice that will benefit us in the future.

The other problem we have, is that we think because we ‘wan t ’ someth ing tha t we should have it. That we are somehow entitled to it, because we want it. Now I am the first to push people to believe in themselves and in their dreams! But we also have to realise that just because you ‘want’ something … doesn’t make it so!

Wanting it isn’t enough! It’s only the first step!

I ‘want’ to eat chocolate all d a y a n d f o r i t b e nutritionally sound! But that’s not going to happen no matter how much I ‘want’ it to. I live in a world which has rules – rules like

g rav i t y, seasons and working hard for results.

I’m sure we all want to be Grand Prix riders. We all want to have great healthy b o d i e s . W e a l l w a n t amazing, rich, intimate relationships.

We want many things. I don’t see many people who struggle with the wanting … go on guess … where do people struggle!?!…

It’s with the doing. We as a society don’t focus as much on the doing as we should.

And if anyone is familiar with my programs, there is actually a model based around this called the be/do/have model. So before we even look at why you aren’t doing what you should be doing, we look at w h o y o u a r e b e i n g . Because if you aren’t being who you need to be, you certainly won’t DO what you need to do, and then you can WANT it as much you like but you will never HAVE what you want to have.

So I trust this warm winter you will make a promise. To stop lying to yourself. Commit to communicating with yourself in a way that tells you the whole truth! Take responsibility for the life you have – as it IS the life that you want, and if you want something to change, something to be different, something new to happen, realise that this alone is up to you, and then go and take action on activities that will bring you closer to your goal.

To Your Success,

Natasha

Left: Quote of the Week

Tash's Training Tip:I had to lead one of our breeding stallions past another in the stable block last week and it was brought to my attention the importance of self belief. One of the stallions had just been bred and was therefore feeling very hormonal and strong and the other is the alpha stallion and also very full of himself. The stable block had just had a feed delivery which meant the breezeway was full of feed bags and to lead the stallion past the other I had to lead him very close to the other and they would be able to touch and strike out and fight IF I allowed it.So how do I now allow it? It was my confidence and self belief that said - stallion you are coming with me and not talking to the other that meant they passed each other with- out mishap. The groom was watching and she said ‘Wow how did you do that? They could have killed each other and you!’ I smiled and said – ‘I wasn’t focussing on how strong they were, how little I am and how out of control I really was. I focussed on getting to where I needed to go and my confidence and self belief we would get there is what allowed the stallion to follow me’.The same is true for riding. How often do you do a transition or a movement and say to yourself – “I hope this works, I hope we get canter, etc.” I don’t! I believe with complete and utter congruence that whatever I am doing it will happen now and easily and effortless. I never hope, I always do. And with that confi- dence and self belief the horse follows. So if that’s you; stop hoping and start believing. Start acting with confidence and self belief that anything and everything you want is within your power right now.

Kate’s Kickass Tips!

Hey guys,

This month I thought I would update you on one of your young crossbred competition horses, EP Milo (EP Monte Carlo).

Milo is currently competing in Novice and doing a super job, with only a few Novice tests

under his belt, he is already becoming a pro.

However, so that we can achieve higher marks we have to maintain a solid connection – we tend to lose connection throughout the test. So during the past couple of months Milo has been in major boot camp for strengthening his back and hind legs, so I can get him travelling forward into the contact.

Page 19: Ebony Park Friesian Magazine - September 2014

Kate’s Kickass Tips!

Once a steady contact is achieved I will be able to execute all the Novice movements with ease.

Milo is very smart and has learnt all the movements very quickly, he can already do all the Elementary moves, but he finds them very hard as he is so big. Over the next few months Milo will be doing a lot of strengthening to build up all of the muscles in his back and hind end.

Our next Novice is on the 6th September at Boneo Park, and we will be ready to rock and achieve those higher marks.

Hope to see some of you there, cheering on Tash and Abe in the Grand Prix, and myself and Milo.

Until next time,

Kate

Ebony Park Rockstar of the MonthEP Lightning and Danielle

I bought my beautiful Friesian warmblood from the team at Ebony Park early in 2012. I could not afford him at the time which is why the 3 year payment plan was perfect. The flexibility of this option made it possible for me to own such a magnificent animal, that I would not have been able to own under my existing financial circumstances.Natasha and Phi l have been most accommodating and I highly recommend their stud and brilliant service from the team at Ebony Park. Ever so helpful and understanding. Not something you find everywhere!I receive compliments on a regular basis over the beauty, presence, movement and nature of my darling boy. Even my equine photographer uses images of Lightning for her greeting cards and on a website to promote her photographic business. Such a credit to Ebony Park. She cannot wait to see him being ridden.Lightning is going off to be started under saddle this month and I cannot wait to ride him. I will be sure to pass on updates of him under saddle.Ebony Park is certainly the place to consider the purchase of your dream horse. They produce quality horses along with quality

service and will do what they can to help you achieve your goals.

You will not be disappointed with an Ebony Park horse. I know a few people who have also purchased their horses from Ebony Park and they too are as happy as me. My horse is very special and I am thankful everyday to be blessed to own such a wonderful boy.

I highly recommend this stud, and couldn’t be happier.

5 Minutes with Mary Hanna

Mary Hanna is the oldest member of Australia’s 2014 World Equestrian Games team - this is her fourth appearance at a WEG! She carried the flag for Australia at the Games’ opening ceremony, and is the only Australia dressage rider in the 2014 WEG to make it through to the Grand Prix Special round - congratulations Mary!

Much has changed since Hanna first represented Australia at a World Championships but her desire to represent her country is as strong as ever.

“The first WEG I went to was in Den Hague. Because nobody expected anything of us it was quite a relaxed experience.

“This is very different of course nowadays. It’s much harder to get selected as the standard is much higher. It was a great thing to be there then, nobody had any expectations and now of course we’re pushing a lot harder and we really want to get out there and do a top performance, it’s not enough to be here anymore.

Mary has been coached by Kyra Kyrklund and Clemens Dierks since 1996. Her primary training base is in Geelong, Australia. She is a

m e m b e r o f Dressage Geelong a n d h a s a scholarship with the Victoria Institute of Spor t . She has c o m p e t e d i n 4 Summer Olympic g a m e s - 1 9 9 6 , 2000, 2004 and 2012.
