CAREER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS Convention Center, Career Resources Area, Hall C The following Seminars and Workshops will be held in the FASEB Career Resources Center. There is no fee or pre-registration associated with the workshops and seminars; just walk in and sit down! Critiquing of Resumes is by appointment and starts at 9:00 AM on Saturday and continues until 4:00 PM on Tuesday. Sign up on-site in the FASEB Career Resources Center, Hall C. Saturday, April 28 10:00 AM- Networking: A New Millennium Requirement presented by Howard Adams To succeed in today's competitive world of work, who you know can be as critical as what you know. Successfully networking, to develop contacts, is a required skill. Networking involves 1) making contacts, 2) establishing cordial relationships, and 3) ultimately bonding to mutually support each other and share information. This seminar is designed to present skills and techniques for gathering information and making contacts using networking strategies. During the session, Dr. Howard Adams will address the following questions: 1) What is networking? 2) What are the keys to effective networking practices? 3) How can one use networking to manage one's career into the future? 11:00 AM- Make Your Interview Count presented by Eric Celidonio. A general “how to” interview class for anyone looking to hone their skills or simply learn the basics of a proper interview. Also a street-smart guide of what to do and what not to do as you meet a potential employer. (Concurrent session.) 11:00 AM- Postdocs: What Should You be Looking For and How to Find Them presented by Andrew Green Many Ph.D.s just kind of fall in to a postdoc, rather than thinking about it from a strategic perspective. Your postdoc is never an end in itself; rather it’s a means to another end whether that goal is a faculty position at a research university, at a small college, or perhaps an industry job. Learn how to find

postdoc opportunities that will best prepare you for that next step, and how to use your postdoc experience to facilitate the transition to your next position. (Concurrent session.) 1:00 PM- Prioritizing: Getting Focused to Simplify Your Life presented by Howard G. Adams As we move through our daily lives, the many facets of existing, surviving, and succeeding (demands, desires, options, possibilities) pull us in many directions. There appears to be “so much to do and so little time to get it done” that we become overwhelmed. The pressing question becomes, “What can one do?” The response is simple; establish priorities and get organized. This seminar will examine strategies for establishing priorities and getting organized. Key topics: Clarifying priorities • Organizing your actions • The daily To Do LIST • Eliminating distractions • Keeping a journal • Creating a reminder checklist • and Setting and achieving goals. (Concurrent session.) 1:00 PM- Beyond the Bench… Preparing for Your Career Transition in the Life Sciences presented by Joe Tringali Is there a way to move your skills from the bench to a related career? There is, assuming one is focused and willing to invest some time in making the switch. We will explore different paths to alternative scientific careers. (Concurrent session.) 2:00 PM- Creating Your Individual Development Plan (IDP) presented by Bill Lindstaedt and Cynthia Fuhrmann Trainees in the biomedical sciences who create and follow a written plan for success are more likely to reach their research and career goals. In this hands-on workshop you will examine your skills, interests and values and consider your current career trajectory. Then, working with several presenters who are experienced with scientists’ career development issues, you will begin to set detailed career goals and map them to your own Individual Development Plan. (Concurrent Session.)
