THE CHILLAXIDASICAL VIBEThe Chippewa Valley has no shortage of great cafés and coffeehouses, but few come close to the atmosphere of Racy D’lene’s Coffee Lounge. Many of Racy’s return patrons became regulars while at UW-Eau Claire, and it’s no secret why. The comfy mix-and-matched couches. The hip music. The late hours. And, of course, the coffee. In true lounge style, they have an aquarium and a bookshelf filled with thinking man’s board games. Maybe it’s to add relaxing and homey distractions from the glow of a laptop screen (which many patrons bring along). By no means the place to go if you have five minutes to get to work and need your double mocha frappe latte with extra-chilled soy milk foam RIGHT NOW. But if you have some time to relax or need some peace and quiet, it’ll hit the spot.

THE SIMPLER-TIME VIBEOlson’s Ice Cream Parlor is an institu-tion. Its success started as most do: with a quality product. And that success has continued over several decades, creat-ing a long-standing history and tradi-tion. As one local wrote in a review on VolumeOne.org, “Any visit to Chippewa Falls calls for a stop at Olson’s. Trip to Irvine Park? Olson’s. Visiting rela-tives? Olson’s. Dinner at Casa Mexicana or Lucy’s? Olson’s. Incarceration in jail due to a misunderstanding at Dam Bar? Bail, then Olson’s.” Their spot on the ped-estal will remain as long as the product and place remain constants, and what it becomes is a piece of comforting nostal-gia. Going there for a late summer after-noon and stepping into the retro-style diner takes you back in time. For several lucky Vallians, that place is childhood. When you’d scrounge up any change you could find, sprinted downtown to grab a cone with friends, and sat outside on the sidewalk, working furiously around the cone to savor every last drop and prevent-ing the melting goodness from dripping to the ground. And, thankfully, that rush of nostalgia is always just one scoop away …

Awesome Atmospheressome Chippewa Valley eateries with unique vibesCompiled By Trevor Kupfer

You might say you’re a regular patron at area restaurants because of their food. Maybe they have great burgers. Or their fish fry is to die for. Or they’re the only place that prepares avocado and haggis paninis just the

way you like them. That’s great. And it very well may be true. But on a subcon-scious level, there’s a whole other group of restaurants you continually frequent because of their atmosphere. A unique combination of décor, staff, clientele, seating, noise level, and all manner of aspects that dictate your personal comfort with a place. Deny it up and down, but it’s true; and what those places are can say a lot about your tastes and personality. So we asked a bunch of Chippewa Vallians, as well as searched within our heart of hearts, about what those places are and why they’re so darn special to us. And here they are …

Never sit the same way twice. Featuring “vintage” seating, eclectic art, and cute fishies, Racy D’lene’s Coffee Lounge in Eau Claire offers a laid-back mood with its brew.

THE BUSTLING URBAN VIBEEvery time I eat in both Stella Blues and Zanzibar I get the distinct feeling of being amid bustling young professionals who just got out of work on a Friday in the big city. They all gather at this charming little place to have some food and some drinks before hitting the town. While they can also be great places for dates (I’ve had several at both), this feeling is still inescapable. Thinking about it now, I realize that this charming metropolitan feel comes from the noise level (lots of talking), variety of upscale options at the bar, well-dressed staff (and patrons, for that matter), low lighting, and trendy décor. Said décor includes reprints of movie posters, trendy paintings, and French ads. They feel like hip upscale hangouts, and the fact that their menus are unique to the area and bistro-esque doesn’t hurt.

THE WARM LOG CABIN VIBEThe log cabin design motif is likely the most used (and abused) of all in this part of the country. It’s easy to see why. A log cabin evokes weekend getaways with family and friends, nuzzling up to

a warm fire, a quiet and remote loca-tion, with nothing to do but hunt, fish, whittle, or record For Emma Forever Ago. No one captures this essence as well as Northwoods Brew Pub and Norske Nook. The décor is obvious: log walls, flannel curtains, moose, bears, fish, and antlers. But the real key is the smells and feel of the place, influenced by a fireplace that creates both inviting warmth and that unmistakable aroma of woodsmoke. By the time you dive into a slice of home-made apple pie, you’d swear you were on a rocking chair with a cup of hot cocoa.

THE RELAXING WINE-AND-DINE VIBEDuncan Creek, Mona Lisa’s, and Houligan’s are quite different in the par-ticulars of their décor, menus, and sur-roundings. So it’s quite surprising that the sum of those parts add up to a similar overall feel. But they do. Mona’s and Houligan’s are both rather large places and use dimmer lighting than Duncan Creek, but all three still feel like the intimate downtown dining spots you’d hope to find in any large urban setting. All three have great beverage options at the bar (taking particular pride in wines, specialty beers, and martinis). All three

are relatively quiet. All three have mostly small-table seating (both indoors as well as out). And all three double as relaxing and quiet date-night options, as well as great places for a mellow drink at the bar.

THE EVERYONE-IS-WELCOME VIBEThough many restaurants tout themselves as such, very few are really ACTUALLY honest-to-god inviting for all walks of life. And even fewer actually attract a wide range of people. But such is the case with Girolamo’s Court’n House. It’s great for people looking for a burger or fish fry. It’s great for people looking to drink beer or sing karaoke. It’s a great talking spot after a show at The Gran Little Theatre. They’ve even recently added a big box of board games and coloring books. It’s as diverse a clientele (at least in terms of age) as you’re liable to find around these parts. You’ve got college kids and long-time neighborhood residents sitting a barstool away from each other at any given moment. Credit this hangout anom-aly to the family that runs it, as they them-selves are of varied ages and interests. Their unifying factor is the same as the clientele’s: they’re as nice as they come.

The deep, rich colors, original artwork, and Mediterranean vibe is reason enough to check out Mona Lisa’s in Eau Claire. Also – sofas.

THE ADVENTURERWhether to come off as bold or as cul-tured as Anthony Bourdain, the adven-turer seeks a little thrill in their eating experience – often looking for strange or unique ingredients that others cringe at. If you fit this mould, Eau Claire offers a few interesting places to check out. With quail, rabbit, and calamari all on the menu, The Livery (aka Cowtown Saloon) might offer the excitement you are look-ing for in a bar and grill-style eatery that combines historical urban with mod-ern hip. Shanghai Bistro likewise adds some flare to their menu with meats like octopi, mussels, and duck, plus all kinds of sushi and seaweed dishes. A safer, though likewise multicultural, option is The Water Street Deli & Grocery for its Mediterranean cuisine.

THE SCAREDY-CATWe all know them. And maybe you’re one yourself. And that’s OK. A scaredy-cat doesn’t want to take risks in their meal choices. When they go out, they want to know they’re going to enjoy it. It’s like a phobia that means ordering only chicken tenders at every eatery, or else only going to certain restaurants “you can trust.” For places that won’t scare your taste buds, we suggest perennial Italian favor-ites such as Olive Garden, Mancino’s, or Cicione’s. Always safe bets, these places have standard Italian fare and always a few slightly interesting options if you’re not as safe as your guest. The same goes for Asian buffets like Jade Garden and Great Wall. If things get really desperate, there’s always pizza.

Taking Out Stereotypesa guide of where to take friends or family from out of townCompiled By Kristin Frosch

You know the scenario. Some friends or family are coming in from out of town. You’re planning to go out for a bite to eat. Being that they’re not from around here, they look to you for suggestions. On the fly, you have to take what you’ve gathered of those people’s collective tastes and think of a place that fits their stereo-

typical needs. We won’t bother to detail how difficult a process this is. You know already. But what we have done is attempt to alleviate these difficult times by breaking down the different eating stereotypes and suggesting some places to take them. So the next time you encounter this situation, peruse our list, find your stereotype, and make the best decision when dining out!

Melty, gooey, delicious ... a safe bet. Don’t be fooled by his bite, this dude’s a Scaredy-Cat.

THE SHARERNot to be mistaken for places that give you huge portions (something many area bar and grills do a great job of), this category instead speaks to the kind of company that can never make up their mind about what dish to order. “They all sound so good!,” they say. So if you’ve got someone who you know likes to try a little of theirs, a little of yours, and maybe even the table next door, we suggest Mona Lisa’s, Zanzibar, and Sweetwaters. All three have great entrée menus, but in this case you may want to look at their rotating appetizers (Mona’s), shared beginnings (Sweetwaters), and tapas (Zanzibar). Your guest will thank you as they wildly throw their hands all over the plate in front of you.

THE SENSUALISTThe Sensualist prefers to experience the aroma and taste of the food as well as the atmosphere in which they are dining, which should be just as impor-tant to you in this case because these people often take their time when eat-ing a meal. Basically, they’re the kind of person who will open a bottle of wine, let it breathe, visually inspect it upon pouring, swirl it in their mouth, and then talk at length about its tannins. They may or may not be a snob. With a charming and intimate atmosphere as well as a well-crafted menu, we suggest Duncan Creek Winebar. On another end of the spectrum, with decadent hand-crafted sweets, Obsession Chocolates is likewise is fine choice. Other excellent sugges-tions include Draganetti’s (great Italian fare and wines) and Houligan’s (steak, seafood, and a great bar).

SPICE LOVERIt doesn’t get any more cut-and-dry than a spice lover. They crave that extra sen-sory kick with each bite. There’s cer-tain places in which it’s obvious – Thai, Indian, Cajun, Mexican, etc. But it just so happens that you’re guests are in luck, because we not only have these kinds of restaurants, but ours are luckily quite good. With every dish coming with a spice level option from one to four, Pad Thai is an obvious favorite. For Mexican fare, both Azul Tequila and Tacos Juanita take pride in clearing your sinuses. With its heavy use of curry and red pepper, Jewel of India makes perfect sense. And Stella Blues provides the southern Creole fla-vorings. The other beauty part about these restaurants is, if you’re not a fan of spice, their dishes can be made very mild and palatable.

GREASE LOVERIf you prefer your burger dripping with grease, you’ve come to the right part of the country. We have no shortage of deep fried bar fare around these parts. We are, after all, the people who first thought of taking cheese, covering it in batter, and deep frying it. More than half of the taverns in the area either pride them-selves on burgers or fish frys, and we’re in no position to say any of them are wrong. But three that locals continually come back to are the traditional greasy spoon breakfast nook Chickadees, the traditional southern-style fried chicken

Look to the Chippewa Valley’s many Mexican eateries for a shot of culinary zing. Look out, we’ve got a Spice Lover on our hands ... and she already ate a whole bowl of salsa.

kings Chicken Unlimited, and the mas-sive fried, messy, and/or cheesy menu options of Whiskey Dicks.

CHEAP SKATEWe all know them. And, around them, we always refer to their stereotype as “frugal.” But just because these people won’t spend beyond the bare minimum doesn’t mean you have to miss the finer things around here. There are a few quality places with cheap options. Case in point: Egg Roll Plus. They offer really cheap and filling egg rolls that are more like meals than appetiz-ers. In Fall Creek, there’s a bar called Chicken Chasers where it’s rumored people have went in with $10, drank a pitcher, had lunch, and still came out with bills. Otherwise look to the entire Family Style category, where the menus are huge and nearly every-thing cheap, and select options on the American Casual side like Mom’s Kitchen.

HEALTH NUTThe health nut seeks to nourish the mind and body with sustainable foods. If you’re a carnivore, these are people quite foreign to you and often refer to themselves as something “-arian” (e.g. vegetarian, pescetarian, etc.). But no matter how foreign, they’re far from alone around these parts. They’ve been known to travel in herds. And you can often find them at places like

The Nucleus (a great breakfast spot), Raw Deal (a rare raw food spot), or Eau Claire Fusion (health smoothies). Otherwise a gamut of great cafes and sandwich shops like Harmony Corner Café, Grand Avenue Café, Camille’s, Lucy’s Deli, Acoustic Café, and Nelson’s Cheese Haus.

MIXED COMPANYChances are, not everyone in your din-ing party has the same tastes. Odds are good you have to deal with a combina-

tion of these stereotypes. Luckily, there are plenty of places that offer a wide variety of options to satisfy everyone (though an adventurer, scaredy-cat, grease lover, and health nut would be tough to deal with). HuHot allows you to assemble your own stir-fry. That’s a plus. Green Mill has a huge menu, offering everything from American fare to Italian food. Also a plus. Noodles & Company offers a wide variety of sand-wiches, soups, and pastas, three types of food that most everyone can enjoy. Plus trifecta.

Awesome place to hang out and get great food. ... I absolutely loved the service and the food! I didn’t feel like just “another customer.” I felt like I was a regular, which is always nice! I’m sick of going to places and feeling like it’s a burden that I’m there. Yankee Jacks definitely made me feel welcome and I will be back! ”Write your own restaurant reviews of more than 250 establishments at www.VolumeOne.org

Great service! Great food with large portions, also. We’ve always been treated like family here and it’s been very timely also. I would highly recommend the fish (deli-cious batter) and their rueben. You can tell they make many of the ingredients in-house. YUM!”Write your own restaurant reviews of more than 250 establishments at www.VolumeOne.org

review by Micah68

We stopped by for the first time on a Saturday. We tried the Moroccan Mocha and the Iced Vietnamese ... both unique flavors and delicious. The barista was patient in answering questions. They were also baking a caramel apple scone and were serving them to customers as fast as they came out of the oven. We’ll be back!”Write your own restaurant reviews of more than 250 establishments at www.VolumeOne.org

This restaurant has got it figured out. Good food, family friendly, lots of local people, repeat customers ... Why? Customer service. They are fast, and always friendly. They want every customer to be satisfied. Can you say coffee? Pop? Wa-ter? Refills galore. Just like the old days ... ah ... finally a business who gets it.”Write your own restaurant reviews of more than 250 establishments at www.VolumeOne.org

We went here last year when we had a guest from outside of the area. Wonderful selection of entrees with original combinations of meats, fruits and sauces. Very informative and friendly staff. The menu is always changing with constantly new options to choose from, but if it’s available I recommend the cranberry chutney. ”Write your own restaurant reviews of more than 250 establishments at www.VolumeOne.org

I would try other things but I just love these two so much I crave them when I get the chance to eat there. I have eaten there about 10-15 times and have had a good experience every time. ”Write your own restaurant reviews of more than 250 establishments at www.VolumeOne.org

“Fuji Sushi & Steakhouse4864 Keystone Crossing, EC • 832-3388

review by ectiedyeguy

Honestly in my opinion the best sushi in town. The staff was fast and friendly. The dining environment was spacious and well lit. The sushi was excellent. On my first visit I had the 3 roll lunch combo for $10.95, an excellent value. Cheaper and tastier than the other sushi restaurants in Eau Claire. I can see eating here quite often. ”Write your own restaurant reviews of more than 250 establishments at www.VolumeOne.org
