Quiz+ given 10/12, due 10/19 PHY 221 Name___________________________________

1 Define: kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy, spring potential energy, work, and power. Also write the

basic equation involving each.

2 Assume mechanical energy in conserved during a collision between the following 3 objects. Object A is initially

moving with KE=15 J. Objects B and C are initially stopped. If Objects A and B each have KE=5 J after the

collision, how much kinetic energy does object C have after the collision? Also, why do you think the directions

of motion are not mentioned in this question?

3 Find the amount of energy lost in a 1D collision of 2 masses where mass A (5kg) starts at +5 m/s and strikes mass

B (10kg) initially at rest, knowing that they are stuck together after the collision. Note: Even though mechanical

energy is lost, total momentum is not.

4 Alter problem #3 such that the collision becomes elastic, and find the final velocities of each mass. Note: they

don’t stick together in this case.

5 Two masses 2D inelastic collision. Mass A (10 kg) is traveling west at 15 m/s. Mass B (15 kg) is traveling north at

15 m/s. Determine the velocity (speed and direction) of the two masses after the collision as they move

together.
