EASTER SUNDAY

When Christians are asked the meaning of Easter, they refer to the resurrection of Jesus. It is the day for tell-ing the wondrous story: Mary Magdalene saw the stone moved away, Peter went in and saw the wrap-pings on the ground, and the beloved disciple saw and believed. The faith of contemporary believers builds on their testimony. It is our festival of life, for the boldness of God’s love snatched victory from the jaws of death. Our memories and rituals unite us with that event which was so disconcerting, marvelous, and lib-erating. Sunday after Sunday, and especially at this greatest Sunday of the year, we enter events which show Easter as more than a once-upon-a-time event. We bless and share the meal that shapes us as the Body of Christ. We sing alleluias and say the good news still takes flesh in our world. We color eggs and enjoy feasts without need of rational explanation. The pull to dress finely may be marred by commercialism or a drive for status, but we know our winter has passed and new life is here. In these and in so many other ethnic customs, we renew life just as we renew our baptismal commit-ment. More correctly, we rest in awe before the One who renews life and provides the possibility of com-mitment. The reading from Colossians highlights still another dimension of this day. Implicit within all these cele-brations, there is a sense of future. We can be intent on “things above rather than things on earth.” Easter is a promise of the endtime. Our festivals take place in a sinful world, in an imperfect Church. In them we taste that time when we will all be in glory. GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES

In 1991, Marxist guerrillas in the mountain village of Huasahuasi, Peru, executed Irene McCormack, Jo-sephite sister and missionary. Her “crime” was feed-ing the poor with food donated by overseas aid organi-zations. The violent activities of these terrorists were a daily reality but, despite warnings, Irene chose to stay in the village with its impoverished people. After thirty years of teaching in Australian schools, Sister Irene found her purpose in life teaching the children of Hua-sahuasi to read and write. One evening armed gueril-las arrested her and took her to the village plaza, where five villagers were already face-down on the ground. The captors conducted a mock trial. Sister Irene was denounced as a “Yankee imperialist”—even though villagers protested that she was Australian—pronounced guilty, then shot in the back of the head by a girl soldier. The example of Sister Irene and the vil-lagers who died with her has been remarkable, result-ing in an annual human rights activities week, commu-nity clean-ups, and at least one new Peruvian vocation to the Josephites.

GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES

Sister Irene also left something just as important—a description of the spirit that called her to go to Peru. Sister Irene also left something just as important—a description of the spirit that called her to go to Peru. Back in Australia in 1987, she ex-plained to family and friends the revelation she received at the age of forty. The call to be a missionary came to her through re-flection and prayer. She described it as an overwhelming experi-ence of the unconditional love of God and not simply an intellec-tual conviction. She recognized God beckoning her through an inner voice. If she were to be true to herself as a woman, a Chris-tian, a Josephite, and a world citizen, she felt she had to respond to the Spirit within. If she did not yield, she believed that she risked spiritual death. Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights re-served.
