Easter WeekA study of the events leading up to the Resurrection can draw

us closer to the Savior and foster a deeper understanding of the

    Atonement.

As we approach the Easter season, Christians worldwide prepare

to commemorate the death and resurrection of the Lord JesusChrist by reading and reecting upon the scriptural accounts of

the last days of His mortal ministry. The most important parts of

this storythe Saviors atoning work, consisting of His suf-

fering in the Garden of Gethsemane, His crucixion, and His

triumphant rising from the tombare well known to Latter-day

Saints. We are grateful for Restoration scripture that gives us

added insights and understanding of their signicance.

However, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in-

clude additional events that prepare Christians to understand the

symbolism of the Atonement and why Jesus was uniquely quali-

ed to work an innite and eternal sacrice (Alma 34:10).

Occasionally the four Gospel authors differ in their emphasisof certain aspects of these events, but these differences do not

detract from the historical truth of the Saviors actions and

teachings. Indeed, they give readers added insights and perspec-

tives into four mosaics1 that function together like different

    facets of the same diamond.

be a king of the Jews. Though Pilates examination found

Jesus guiltless of the charge, the Jewish leaders had incited

the crowd to destroy Jesus. (Matthew 27:20.) Fearing a

demonstration, Pilate gave in to the clamor to crucify Jesus,

and the death sentence was pronounced. And so Jesus was

executed by the brutal Roman practice of crucixion. Later

    that afternoon he

voluntarily gave up his spirit. The next day, which began at

sundown, was the Passover, and the Jewish leaders abhorred

the idea that a man should remain on a cross on the Sabbath,

particularly the paschal Sabbath. Before nightfall, Jesus body

was removed from the cross and buried in a sealed tomb bytwo revering disciples.

    Seventh Day

This was the Jewish Sabbath. Jesus body remained in the

tomb, but in spirit he ministered in the realm of departed spir-

    its. (See 1 Peter 3:1820.)

    Day of the Resurrection

Had the gospel ended with Jesus burial, there wouldbe no

gospel story, no good news. The great message of these

testators is that Jesus was risen and was seen again by many

witnesses. On the rst day of the week, the most memorable

Sunday in history,Jesus Christ emerged alive from the tomb, and appeared before Mary. The testimony of these witnesses

constitutes the gospel story, the good news.

These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the

Christ, the son of God; and that believing ye might have life

through his name. (John 20:31.) ( The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles COURSEMANUAL (Religion 211212) CES)

    name. (John 20:1, 1116)

    feet. (Matthew 28:1, 510, Matt. 28:1, 510, Luke

only Jesus burial clothes. (John 20:210)

    door was shut. (John 20:1920)

Witnesses to the Resurrected Christ The greatest events of history are those which affect the greanumber for the longest periods. By this standard, no event co

be more important to individuals or nations than the Resurreof the Master. The eventual resurrection of every soul who h

lived and died on earth is a scriptural certainty, and surely th

is no event for which one should make more careful prepara

Nothing is more absolutely universal than the resurrection. E

living being will be resurrected. For as in Adam all die, eve

in Christ shall all be made alive (1 Cor. 15:22).

Yes, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is a glorious reality. He

became the rst fruits of them that slept. He truly rose from

tomb the third day, as He and His prophets foretold, and bec

in very deed the resurrection and the life (John 4:6). He br

the bonds of death for all of us. We, too, will be resurrected.

spirits will be reunited with our bodies (see Alma 11:43). Yes, this same Jesus has already come to earth in our day. Th

It has been almost two thousand years since the wondrous

occasion when death was conquered. We still do not know

how the Savior was able to take upon Himself and bear

our transgressions, our foolishness, our grief, our sorrows,

and our burdens. It was indenable and unfathomable. It

was almost unbearable. The indescribable agony was so

great in Gethsemane that his sweat was as it were great

drops of blood falling down to the ground. (Luke 22:44.)

The haunting cry on the cross, in a loud voice in His native

Aramaic, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being in-

terpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?(Mark 15:34) gives but a mere glimpse of His suffering

and humiliation. One cannot help wondering how many of

those drops of precious blood each of us may be responsi-

ble for. (The Supernal Gift of the Atonement, Elder James

    E. Faust)

Now, the next thing of which I am certain, and of which

I bear witness, is the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Without it life is meaningless. It is the keystone in the

arch of our existence. It afrms that we lived before we

were born in mortality. Mortality is but a stepping-stoneto a more glorious existence in the future. The sorrow of

death is softened with the promise of the Resurrection.

There would be no Christmas if there were no Easter. (The

Things of Which I Know, President Gordon B. Hinckley)
