Preferred Reading: the preferred reading of east enders would be that the producer would want the audience to relate to the people in the soap, sympathising with the characters and having a personal link with them, by understanding the bond of a community as well as family.

Oppositional Reading: the oppositional reading for east enders could be that the audience doesn't have a connection with the characters, there are no similar feeling/bonds which link the audience and characters/show.

Negotiated Reading: a negotiated reading could be that the audience identify to some of the characters and the show but don't fully link with it.

Different audiences may be positioned slightly differently by the text, so for example audiences of different cultures and background will feel to be positioned in a different way.
