East Leake Academy’s oldest member of staff Sylvia Hutchinson has decided to hang up her apron for the final time to take her well-earned retirement.

Sylvia, who turned 80 last October, has worked as the academy’s staff room assistant for the past 18 years, serving tea, coffee and biscuits at morning breaktimes to ensure teachers and staff are fuelled up and ready for the day

ahead. Each week, she also treats the team to bacon sandwiches which have become a tradition among staff. Sylvia is also infamous for the daily banging of her big spoon to bring the staff room to order.

Prior to working at East Leake Academy, Sylvia worked as a lollipop lady at Brookside Primary School for three years, making sure the children were safe and sound en-route to and from school.

When she first joined East Leake Academy, then known as the Harry Carlton School, she made the staff room her own, bringing in new cups and cutlery - and introducing snacks for staff.

To this day, she still brings in new mugs, cups and glasses to ensure everything is up to her exacting standards.

When asked what she would miss most about her job, Sylvia said: “Everything really – the people, the laughs and even the moans. Some of the teachers call me their Agony Aunt. I’ve loved keeping the staff room in order and looking after the staff, but I do tell them off if they don’t keep it tidy. A job is what you make of it and I’ve loved my time here.”

East Leake Academy’s Sylvia retires at 80

Principal of East Leake Academy, Kathy Hardy, said: “Sylvia will be sorely missed by everyone here at the academy. She has a great sense of humour, a generous nature and is always cheery. She is loved

by all and it will not be the same place without her. We all wish her the best for her retirement, she truly deserves it.”

A huge number of staff members past and present, including

members of Sylvia’s family turned up to say cheerio to Sylvia on her final day at the school, which bears huge testament to her widespread popularity.

Speaking about Sylvia at her leaving presentation, Phil Renshaw from the academy, said: “The word legend is banded around all too easily these days, but Sylvia truly is

legend as shown by the amount of people who have turned up to say their goodbyes today. All of us will remember your kindness.”

Displaying her trademark humour Sylvia concluded by saying to her colleagues: “Thank you all for everything. Even though you leave your tea bags and mess everywhere, I shall miss you all.”

ELAPs continue their fantastic run of success

As part of a new project called Notts Voices, a group of Nottingham Trent University students are starting a community engagement project to understand how people across Nottinghamshire have been affected by armed conflict. Notts Voices is the first in a new series of projects, which aims to create a digital archive of the legacies of armed conflict across Nottinghamshire. Undergraduate students Courtney, Charis and Natasha, who are all in their third year of studying BA History within the School of Art and Humanities, are hoping to get in contact with as many different people willing to share their personal experiences with the project.

These personal experiences or stories will help the students to create a digital archive, which reflects the different ways people in our communities have been affected by armed conflict, either themselves or indirectly in all aspects of their lives. The archive will be made available for researchers and to give the people of Nottinghamshire a voice.

Courtney said: “We are particularly interested in the experiences of refugees or migrants and those people whose relatives moved to Nottinghamshire to escape

modern-day war, as well as the stories of service men and women and their families. We want to sensitively understand how people have dealt with the impacts of such incidents and how it might have affected peoples everyday outlook on life, both positive and negative.”

Being affected by armed conflict includes serving or being involved with the military. However, it also includes the experiences of people migrating to the UK after conflict or civil unrest abroad either recently or generations ago, such as The Troubles in Northern Ireland or the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan.

Anyone aged 18 or over living in Nottingham between March to May 2019 can contribute to the project with their story of how armed conflict has affected their lives.

Stories can be any length, can include drawing/sketches and do not have to contain specific details such as names if people prefer events to remain anonymous.

To share you story with Notts Voices at or for more details, please contact the project team…

Phone 0115 84 83411, write to Notts Voices, School of Arts and Humanities, NTU, NG11 8NS, or by email at [email protected].

Rushcliffe residents have been named the third-happiest in the UK.

This findings are based on a new study of measures, including access to health services, crime and life expectancy.

A Happiness Index commissioned by the Royal Mail has found the borough’s inhabitants are amongst the most joyful in the country.

Reasons given include positive reported personal wellbeing, earnings and low levels of crime, deprivation and carbon emissions.

The research, commissioned to Cebr, saw eight measures inputted into an indexing methodology.

It was measured across districts in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland,

Only Winchester and Babergh scored higher than the Nottinghamshire authority area.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s chief executive, Allen Graham, told the Local News: “We are proud yet

another independent study has found Rushcliffe residents to have among the most positive and happy communities to live, work and play in across the UK.

“It is even more pleasing that we have highlighted that happiness can be found outside the South East and that the East Midlands is such a good place to live.

“The findings of this study further show that a number of great facilities and great opportunities contribute to the high quality environment that makes a difference to resident’s lives.

This study also once again justifies our strapline great place, great sport and a great lifestyle.

“We know however there are always ways we can improve the quality of life for our residents.

“We will endeavour to work with our partners to further develop the environment and facilities that can help make people happy.”

Rushcliffe residents named third happiest in the UKYou can’t escape the strong sense of community spirit in East Leake.

From Easter bunny hunts to the Christmas lights switch-on - the East Leake Traders Association are behind a number of fantastic events enjoyed by local residents.

Following the launch of their new website last summer, in August 2018, this savvy group of businesses committed to going digital. Enlisting the expertise of East Leake-based PR and marketing agency Arch Communications, the traders hoped to showcase what the village has to offer and what a success it has been!

Chairperson, Hayley Masom, said: “We always hoped our social media platforms would attract interest as we know East Leake is home to many thriving businesses. We now reach thousands of people each month, which is really impressive.”

Arch Communications are based in the heart of the village and have been dedicated members of the

Traders for nearly 10 years. They keep their ear to the ground, finger on the pulse and really understand the ethos behind the organisation.

By keeping content varied - and engaging - follower numbers across both Facebook and Twitter continue to rise. In fact, the traders now have 400 more followers than they did this time last year.

Monthly reach has also soared. In the first month, Facebook reach increased ten-fold. December witnessed the greatest success, with reach across both platforms exceeding 60,000.

Following a meeting in January, the traders launched a news page on their website. This is collectively managed by Grasshopper Hosting and Arch. From new member announcements, to save the date reminders, all trader-related news can be found here.

Look out for the hashtag #Keepitlocal, give them a follow or like their page on Facebook to keep up-to-date with news, events and business offers.

Rushcliffe Borough Council has been shortlisted for Council of the Year at the forthcoming prestigious Municipal Journal awards to be announced in London in June.

The authority is the only district or borough council in the UK to have made the final five for the award and will now go head to head with some of the best unitary and London boroughs in the country.

The news comes after the Council scooped two industry accolades in just three months last year, when named the Commercial Council of the Year at the 2018 awards and the Local Government Chronicle’s Entrepreneurial Council of the Year.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Chief Executive Allen Graham said a team will now present and take part in a question and answer session on behalf of the Council to a panel

of judges in London on May 9.

He said: “This is wonderful news not just for Rushcliffe but the whole of Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands with the industry recognising how the Council is punching above its weight to deliver economic growth combined with reliable local services, whilst being self-sufficient and commercially minded.

“It is an achievement to reach this stage, to be acknowledged in the same breath as other successful Councils with much larger populations and infrastructure. We are so proud of our staff and honoured to represent the community we serve.

“However, we feel we fully deserve our chance and will present why our ambitions in recent years have been so effective.”

Borough council shortlisted for Council of the Year award

A total of 8,271 out of 8,794 parents have secured a place at their first preferred primary school for their children in September. This indicates an increase in the number of parents receiving an offer of their first-preference school for their child. Nottinghamshire County Council contacted the 8,794 parents to let them know which school their son or daughter is to attend from September.

This year shows an increase in the number of applications received before the closing date and also shows an increase in the percentage of parents who have got a place at one of their preferred schools at 98.9%. Of the remainder, 96 - a total of 1.1% of applicants - have been offered a place at a school they didn’t include on their application. The county council said it had done all it could to ensure that parents send their child to a school they wanted.

Chairman of the county council’s children and young people’s committee, councillor Philip Owen, said: “The situation as a whole continues to be encouraging as the majority of parents will be getting a school for which they made a preference.I am very happy that every child in Nottinghamshire, whose parents applied before

the deadline, will have a primary school place in September 2019. Unfortunately, popular schools will always be over-subscribed and whatever the admissions criteria are for those schools, the likelihood is that there will be some disappointed families.

“As an authority, we aren’t complacent as we’re aware of the pressures within the system and the forecast number of children coming through. We have a statutory duty to ensure we have sufficient school places across all schools, irrespective of whether they are academies, local authority maintained or otherwise governed.”

Service director for education, learning and skills, Marion Clay, also assured late applicants that a school place would be available for their child this September:

“The waiting list applies to all on-time unsuccessful applications, late applications and changes to preferences,” she said. “If a parent has been refused a place at a preferred school they have a right to appeal against the decision. All appeals are wholly independent. For information about appeals parents can visit the council website or contact 0300 500 80 80 for more advice.”

Over 94% of parents secure first-preference place Josi Hollis has recently been

selected with 100 others to take part in a trek across the Himalayas in aid of CoppaFeel.

She will be raising money for the breast care charity, which aims to spread awareness of the importance of checking your breasts from an early age.

Josi told the Local News: "We will be split into teams on the trek.

"The teams will each be led by a celebrity with Nadia Sawalha, Candice Brown, Olivia Buckland and Frankie Bridge all taking part in the event.

"Giovanna Fletcher, who is a patron for the charity, will also be on the trip supporting each group.

"We will be taking an overnight sleeper train from Delhi to Bir where will spend four days trekking for eight hours each day through the Himalayas, before returning home.

"Each participant has to raise £3,000 for the charity and I am hoping to raise the majority of the

funds through a ball I’ve organised called BoobyBall, which takes place on Friday 7th June.

"There will be a drink on arrival, a three-course meal and then music will be provided by the fantastic Joe Strange Band."

The CoppaFeel charity has the following aims..

*Encouraging you to check your breasts regularly from a young age.

*Educating you on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

*Empowering you to seek advice from a doctor if symptoms persist.

Josi added: "The trek will reach altitudes up to 2,757m above sea level.

"It will definitely be a huge test mentally and physically.

"I will be funding the cost of the trip myself so any donation you give will go directly to the charity."

For more details and to help with fundraising visit the website page at https://himalayascoppafeel.everydayhero.com/uk/josi-s-coppafeel-himalayan-challenge.

Sometimes interiors inspiration, however engaging and appealing when drawn out across numerous magazines and online articles, can seem a little overwhelming. Sometimes you want to take the plunge and make a change, but trying to curate a space or choose a design to cover all elements will feel a challenge too far for some.

So, this month I’m going to take it right back to where all of us can get involved, by simply looking to a lick of paint to update a space. Something we can all do ourselves during a weekend should we feel so inclined. An easy update for relatively little cost.

Paint colours to be inspired by this season? Follow me…

There is a big focus on neutrals. Sticking to one colour or two maximum but then using it everywhere. It creates a sense of harmony between spaces, a sense of continuity which will in turn create a very relaxing space. Greige – a mix of grey and beige

– is something to look out for, one that gives a more mushroom vibe. Nude tones, lime washes and Crown’s Powdered Clay are all warmer neutrals which evoke warmth and reassurance, creating a calming environment.

The soft pastel palette works well with other chalky hues, or for a pop of colour, bright oranges or reds will bring drama. For earthiness and keeping a muted colour scheme, add raw organic textures in soft furnishings and lighting.

It makes sense for Pantone’s colour of the year – Living Coral – to be on your radar too. If this seems to bold on its own, separate it into its orange and pink counterparts.

They are nurturing shades that instantly energise and enliven the home so don’t be afraid to take the plunge for an instant mood lift in your design.

According to designer Becky Shea, hunter green is also a great choice for the new season. “Hunter green holds a sultry and worldly value to it, it’s intrinsic in nature and all of life. It’s timeless in every respect and works beautifully with natural elements and neutral tones”. Pair it with some of the softer neutrals from above to really complete your scheme.

A lick of paint is the easiest way to make a sizable enough change in your home to make a difference to the overall feel. Similarly, it’s relatively easy to put back should you change your mind. What have you got to lose?

A lick of paint – by Victoria GreenLocal family business A&G Chem-Dry have been delighted with the response from Local News readers to their fantastic granite worktop care service since they launched it just over two years ago.

For almost 25 years, A&G Chem-Dry have been well known locally as carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning experts. Following many requests from customers, they decided to add this unique granite cleaning and polishing system to their range of services.

Mike, from A&G Chem-Dry, told the Local News: “Over the years, our customers often asked us who they could trust to clean and care for their beautiful granite worktops. Many had tried DIY methods, without success.

“Our service is called granite renewal as the system cleans granite surfaces. However, it also removes bacteria, seals and polishes too. Quite simply, granite worktops are renewed both in appearance and their feel.

“As you would expect from us, our professional Chem-Dry granite worktop renewal service uses green-certified solutions.

“As with our carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning solution, these are safe and non-toxic. Our unique four-stage renewal process

safely and effectively removes dirt and residues. It penetrates deep inside the porous surface of the granite, eliminating dirt, grime and residues.”

How it works Stage one - clean: Dirt, grime and germs are removed fromyour

granite worktops with Chem-Dry countertop cleaning solution.

Stage two: Any remaining residues are removed from your granite worktops with Chem-Dry countertop residue remover.

Stage three – sealing: As the sealer penetrates, your granite is left with a powerful protective layer.

Stage four – polishing: Using a hand buffer with synthetic wool pads, the worktops are polished. This step leaves your granite worktops revitalised and refreshed, with a bright and beautiful shine that you will enjoy for months, and possibly years, to come.

For more details and to arrange a free site survey and granite renewal quote, or for more details on any of A&G Chem-Dry’s services, you can get in touch with the team by calling 0115 989 4443.

Local heating installer Nottingham Gas Services has expanded its range of gas boilers to include Which? Best Buy models from German heating manufacturer, Viessmann.

Steve and James Grice - and the team at Nottingham Gas Services - are fully trained and equipped to fit the full range of Viessmann gas boilers, six of which have been

named by Which? as Best Buys for the past two years because of their exceptional reliability, build quality and ease of repair.

Steve said: “We pride ourselves on our customer service and that includes making sure we’re offering people the best appliances on the market.

“Viessmann products are extremely well made and energy efficient.

“They’re a premium product and save customers money in the long run because of lower fuel bills and repair costs.

“We’ve already begun fitting them locally and our customers are very happy with them.”

At just over 100 years old and still family-run, Viessmann is a household name in Germany.

It has over 12,000 employees around the world and is one of the fastest-growing heating brands in the UK.

The company’s experts are even playing a leading role in government initiatives to make British homes more energy efficient.

“Viessmann products have won a lot of awards and their after-sales service is second to none,” continued Steve.

“But it’s important to use an installer who’s trained to fit them because every brand is different.

“We can give the right advice to ensure customers get the boiler that’s right for their home and lifestyle.

“The sooner people upgrade their boiler to a super-efficient modern system, the sooner they will begin saving money on their fuel bills. It doesn’t make financial sense to put it off.”

At last! Pay-as-you-go car insurance.

Car insurers normally charge the same for insurance – regardless of whether you’re driving or just sitting at home reading a magazine. We don’t think that’s fair, so we created a pay-as-you-go car insurance policy. The less you drive, the less you pay.

Motorists who drive less than 7,000 miles a year could be paying over the odds for car insurance, according to new research from By Miles, the pay-by-mile car insurance provider, and MoneySuperMarket. The analysis of 2.5 million quotes highlighted that UK motorists driving between 5,000 and 6,000 miles a year pay an average of £233 more for their car insurance than those driving up to 12,000 miles. Last year, By Miles launched the UK’s first real-time pay-by-mile car insurance policy as a fairer alternative for lower mileage drivers. Policyholders pay a fixed annual fee to cover their car whilst it’s parked. After that, they simply pay for the miles they’ve driven at the end of each month.

Tom Flack, editor-in-chief at MoneySuperMarket, said: “It’s in our DNA to help drivers find the best deal on their car insurance, so it was a no-brainer to offer pay-by-mile insurance.”

By Miles policies are fully comprehensive and your no claims discount is guaranteed as standard. There’s also a handy app that can scan your car for faults and remind you where you parked it. The full analysis can be read at bymiles.co.uk and suggests that 19 million UK motorists (those who drive less than the UK average of 7,134 miles a year) are in danger of being overcharged for their car insurance

India’s Golden Triangle comprises of the three most visited cities in the country’s north-west; Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The three cities are well connected by good road and rail links with the region known as the Golden Triangle for the extraordinary wealth of historical and cultural sights in each city.

In Delhi, you can experience Indian street life with busy bazaars in Old Delhi, the city of the Moghuls which is dominated by the Great Mosque, take in the Red Fort and escape the hustle and bustle in New Delhi, with its wide boulevards, high end boutiques and cafés.

Jaipur is also known as the Pink City after its red-washed buildings and is packed with market stalls selling all you can imagine and more. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and there are numerous Rajasthani monuments and palaces to visit here, including the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) and the Royal City Palace.

Completing the triangle is Agra, home to one of India’s most famous sights, the iconic Taj Mahal.

There is also the impressive Moghul fort in the centre of the city to explore, as well as experiencing the atmosphere of the busy streets and the city’s many market stalls.

Look at this photo with its beautiful display of summer-coloured flowers and fantastic green-striped lawn and then imagine the same photo with a lawn full of moss, weeds and patchy, stressed grass and you can see why a healthy lawn is so important to a garden.

For most gardens the centrepiece is the lawn and if it is in good condition you will find the extra hard work and effort to keep the rest of the garden in good shape much more worthwhile.

Spending hard-earned money on planting and garden accessories can be expensive, but it will seem money well spent if the end result is a garden that you can be proud of.

The reward of having friends and family visit and make favourable comments about your house and garden gives you a real feel-good factor and there is nothing better than eating or sitting outside looking out onto your own well maintained outdoor area.

However, a lawn is not easy to get or keep in good condition as the products available to the general public can be expensive, not easy to apply and inferior to the ones available commercially and other

essential lawn operations like aeration and scarification can be difficult and labour intensive if not done correctly.

It is a fact that there are many people who have spent a lot of time, effort and money attempting the above and end up making the lawn look worse than when they started. The much easier option is to contact Prograss, your local, professional, qualified,

independent lawncare company. By getting Prograss to take care of your lawn means you will have more time to do other things in the garden and it may even save you money because often the cost of using Prograss is less than buying the products or hiring the machinery.

Prograss use commercial, non-scorch, slow-release fertiliser products that are designed to

improve not only the health of the grass but also the soil condition. All products Prograss use are child and pet-friendly.

Weed and moss control is a lot more difficult than it used to be as a lot of the product has quite rightly been banned because it was not environmentally-friendly.

The products Prograss use are as safe and effective as is on the market and are diluted down to the minimum level that it takes to do the intended job and can only be applied by trained, qualified operators.

Mechanical work such as hollow tine aeration and scarification is done using heavy-duty commercial machinery by trained, skilled operators so you can be assured the job will be done properly.

If you would like a free, no-obligation lawn health check and quote by Prograss, please call 01949 837367 or visit the website at pro-grass.com.

Prograss: Why a nice lawn is essential to a gardenThe space we have available to us all is becoming increasingly restricted. More and more houses are being built which impacts on where you can go walk the dog or the kids can explore.

The pressure is huge in this country with our insatiable demand to own our own homes. In the late 60s and 70s, the misconceived solution was to build high-rise boxes and put people in them.

These same people had been used to living in houses with small gardens and the street to play in. No thought was put into the long-term welfare of the residents. The results have been a disaster.

So much so that some of the said same high rises are now being pulled down. Failures were put down to many things, but the main was a lack of community prospects.

No places for kids to play safely and people to mingle and mix. Moving on, the lessons have hopefully been learned.

The new-generation high rises look to maximise every potential that being outdoors can bring. It's increasingly recognised how important it is to human wellbeing in having an outdoor space that performs many functions.

Trees and plants create a relaxing environment and allow us to distress. They allow nature to be brought to us. No trees – no birds. Simple.

New developments are being built with gardens and trees escalating

up the sides of the buildings for over 40 stories high.

I was in London recently and looked up some high rises and was pleasantly surprised to see so many buildings with rooftop gardens and trees.

If you want to see the way forward, check out The Bosco Verticale in Milan. It has a vertical green wall of 800 trees and 20,000 shrubs and plants that equate to 20,000 m2 of ground.

Design can be used effectively to overcome the problems we experience and produce an oasis, however big or small, that we can use to make our garden space a relaxing place.

We have been designing and building quality gardens locally for nearly three decades.

To see examples of our work please visit duncanrossgardens.co.uk. You can contact us at [email protected] or call 0115 933 6463.

The Waterside Series of marathon canoe races on the Kennet and Avon Canal has been held every spring since 1948. Each of the four fortnightly races in the series is longer than the last, starting with a 13-mile race and culminating in a 35-mile battle from Devizes to Newbury. Competitors from across the country not only have to paddle for many miles, but also negotiate locks, roads and impassable bridges - and in colder years frozen sections of water - by portaging, running alongside the waterway with the boat. There are various classes of both age and boat type and though some crews take part in one or more races, there is also the opportunity to win a series title, determined by adding up the times taken to complete all four races.

A lot of training comes before embarking on this challenge - not to mention the early starts and travel time - and on the weekend of 14th April the dedication and determination paid off for

Nottingham Kayak Club and their support crews, showing why last season’s club title of National Marathon Champions really was well-deserved.

Race results Mags Dilai and Matt Enoch came a close second in the Mixed K2 (double kayak) class in Race A despite a double dose of illness, returning in Race B to assert their dominance over their Reading rivals by coming over the line in first place.

In Race A, Alison Chmiel and Caroline Jones took the top ladies K2 spot, followed closely by Justine Jenkins and Sarah Millest in second place, then swapped positions for the second race two weeks later. Justine and Sarah came a creditable third in Race C and an unassailable first in Race D, beating the second place crew by nearly 20 minutes.

Chris Carter and chairman Pete Ilett put in an impressively consistent performance in a very competitive

Veteran Men’s K2 class, achieving sixth, fifth, sixth and fifth respectively in their four races. Our younger representatives also made a promising first showing at such long races. Woody Snapper came 3rd in the Junior K1 in race A, and Matilda Enoch, paired with Devizes paddler Molly Ball, came in first in the Junior Ladies K2 in Race A and second in Race B.

Series results The true troopers are those who completed every one of the races. Justine Jenkins and Sarah Millest won the K2 Ladies’ title and Chris Carter and Pete Ilett won the Veteran Men’s K2 trophy. An honourable mention must go to Dougal Glaisher. Dougal paddles for Exeter but trains at is at university in Nottingham. He came first in every single Senior Men’s K1 – an incredible feat – and then won the Senior Men’s K1 series. If you want to have a go at kayaking or canoeing, a come-and-try-it session is held every Sunday starting at 11am at Trentside North.

Nottingham Kayak Club dominates Waterside SeriesBy Carol Fearria Chair of the Nottinghamshire Schools Netball Committee

The Nottinghamshire Schools’ Netball Committee were delighted to launch the presentation of a special award, the Gill Barradell Trophy, at the County Under-12 netball tournament held recently at the Nottingham Emmanuel School

in West Bridgford. The committee wanted to pay a special tribute to Broxtowe’s Gill Barradell who gave much of her life to netball and they were delighted that her husband Mick Barradel, together with the family, agreed to present the crystal glass trophy.

Eighteen secondary schools entered the competition and after

the first rounds, the West Bridgford School team were congratulated for scoring the most goals.

This is to be an annual award at the Under-12 County Tournament in memory of Gill who sadly passed away in September 2018.

Gill will be remembered by many players, seniors and juniors, coaches and umpires, in the Nottinghamshire Netball League and as a representative of the county netball team for her outstanding performance as goal shooter from the age of 10 to 72 years old.

She was probably the best goal shooter never to have played for England.

Her shooting statistics for most of her career were near to 90% in every game she played.

There cannot be many players across England who have played for over 40 years in national competitions.

Starting out as a member of Canley Ladies team, she spent the majority of her playing years at Boots Beeston (later renamed Gauntlettes) before finishing her netball career at Cliftonettes as a coach to junior players.

Gill was an inspiration to players of all ages and experience, passing on her love and passion for netball - volunteering as a coach of the junior players at Cliftonettes for over 25 years with many going onto play in county, regional and national competitions.

A great legacy for a great lady!
