In 2016, more than 3,000 teamscomprised of more than 78,000 stu-dents from around the world willcompete for glory in FIRSTSTRONGHOLDSM. Dubbed a var-sity Sport for the Mind™, FIRST Ro-botics Competition combines theexcitement of sport with the rigors ofscience and technology. It’s the onlyschool sport where all members mayturn pro if they choose. Teams of 10or more high school students (ages14-18/grades 9-12) are challenged tobuild and program a robot to performprescribed tasks against a field of com-petitors, raise funds, design a team“brand,” and hone teamwork skills. It’s as close to real-world business andengineering as a student can get!

With only six weeks to build, pro-gram and test their robot, TampaBay’s oldest high school robotics teamin its 19th season, East Lake HighSchool’s FIRST Team 79 KRUNCHhas been working busy six-day weeksto design and construct their cham-pion contender. The team unveiled

their robot during Media Night atEast Lake High School on Tuesday,Feb. 23rd. “We are so proud of thetime and dedication these students, mentors, and our new coach TaycoraCanfield have dedicated to this team,”says Valerie Lockwood. “Many haveworked up to 25 hours a week.” Sheadds, “Aside from building the robot,Team 79 KRUNCH students havealso participated in community serv-ice, fundraisers, and started a newchapter of JRFLL (Jr. FIRST LegoLeague) to expand and grow STEMin our community!”

This year’s team president isELHS Senior Pierce Hitchcock, whohas been accepted to the AerospaceEngineering program at Embry-Rid-dle, explained some of the challengesthe robot must conquer in a medievalthemed game of “dodgeball” wherethe robot must score with a 10-inchball into a high goal and a low goal.FIRST Team 79 KRUNCH’s robot islimited to a specific weight of 120pounds and features a hook design

that will grapple a 6-foot high bar. Itincludes a loading mechanism that re-trieves “boulders” to fire into a smallgoal. It will also consist of mechanismsand a drive train designed to conquerseveral types of obstacles such as anarea of rough terrain, a raised draw-bridge, and a lowered castle gate.Pierce says, “We have defenses in ourway – walls we have to lift, obstacleson the ground, and we have to get

through those defenses to score. There is an autonomous mode wherethe robot must perform programmedsteps automatically for 15 seconds.”Pierce explained some of the com-mands software engineers use – en-coder tells the robot the distance itneeds to travel and potentiometer de-termines the amount of rotations itneeds to make.

about the FIRST program, “I reallylike what it does for our kids socially. They learn life skills they can take withthem whether they go into engineer-ing or not.” Ms. Canfield says thatshe talked to the team about ways theycan get younger students interestedand Freshman Jake Lockwood volun-teered to help. Now Jake and othersfrom the team are mentoring the Jr.Lego program at Excel CreativeLearning Academy. Jake says, “Webuild a robot – yes, but we also inspireother students to become engineers.’

Along with the development ofthe Stronghold robot, ELHS’s FIRSTTeam 79 KRUNCH consistently par-ticipates in community outreach. Inthe last year, the team has conducted28 demos including the SPARK andRotary Club demos, and it continuesto mentor VEX, FLL, and FRC teamsat primary schools in the area support-ing the Science, Technology, Engi-

neering, and Math (STEM) educa-tion. Outside of robotics the studentsparticipate in food drives, Relay forLife, the annual “Angel Tree” collec-tion and the Pinellas Mobile Haz-ardous Material Collection. The teamconsists of sixty students guided bymentors from Honeywell, GE, andother local corporations involved withSTEM.

“This transitional year has provento be a milestone in Team 79KRUNCH’s history,” says coach andELHS teacher Taycora Canfield.“The students, mentors, families, andschool personnel have pulled togetherto continue this great program. Ourteam is eager to unveil this year’srobot and take it to Stronghold!”

Drive Away Cancer! Join the 6th Annual Golf Outing atSeven Springs Golf and Country Club on March 20th

By Kim Thomas

Cancer is a disease that knows nomercy, it doesn’t discriminate; rather, itrages against the very young to the veryold of every race and color and every eco-nomic level. Every year more and morepeople are in need of support providedby organizations that focus on those deal-ing with and recovering from cancer. Andsometimes, cancer seems to attack a fam-ily. When cancer hit the Millian family, alocal family with a strong connection tothe community and a habit of givingback, young Cody Millian didn’t justgrieve – he took action.

Cody, whose family owns local air-conditioning and heating company Mil-lian-Aire, started the JK Cancer Fund inmemory of his beloved grandfather JohnKubek, who passed away from cancer inJanuary 2010. The very first Drive AwayCancer was held to benefit the JK CancerFund. What started out as the heartfeltsenior project of then 17-year-old CodyMillian has steamrolled into an annualgolf outing that, as of February 2016, hasraised more than $180,000 to support

organizations such as American CancerSociety’s Making Strides Against BreastCancer, James P. Gills YMCA’s Live-strong program, and the Pediatric CancerFoundation, all of which will benefit fromthis year’s event. In its first year, DriveAway Cancer raised $10,000, far exceed-ing the Millian family’s expectations. Un-fairly, cancer struck again and Sue Millian- Cody’s mom, John’s daughter, and thebiggest supporter of Cody’s efforts - wasdiagnosed with breast cancer. Sue at-tended the 2nd Annual Drive Away Can-cer Golf Outing with no hair due to herpersonal battle against cancer. This familyis not to be stopped, though. Three yearsago, Sue joined other cancer survivors inthe celebratory balloon release and willwalk as a survivor again this year. Sue saysthat Cody’s passion is even stronger nowafter losing his other grandfather, MichaelMillian, to cancer.

With your support, Drive AwayCancer’s 6th Annual Golf Outing can bebigger than ever. Set for March 20th atthe beautiful Seven Springs Golf andCountry Club (SSGCC) in New PortRichey (3535 Trophy Blvd.), golfers can

start registering at 11 a.m. for the 1 p.m.Shotgun Start.

Every year the JK Cancer Fund GolfOuting is held at SSGCC, where everyyear it is supported by golf pros. Sue saythis year she is very grateful for theSSGCC staff’s support with specialthanks to Wendy McCann and MarkHaluska. It is fitting that the golf outing

is held at SSGCC. Sue Millian says,“Mom and dad lived there and dad [thelate John Kubek] was huge into golfing.”

One of the great programs that the6th Annual Drive Away Cancer golf out-ing will support is the Livestrong pro-gram at the James P. Gills YMCA inTrinity, which is a 12-week program de-signed to support not only adult cancer

survivors, but their families too. JulioVega, District Vice President of YMCAWest Pasco County, says, “This is a freeprogram and no connection to theYMCA is necessary. These families areusually at the end of their wits, exhaustedand with no money. This program helpsthem get strong and connected to others. It is through partnerships like the JKCancer Fund that we can help strengthenthe community. It takes strong commu-nity leaders like Sue Millian to help us.I’ve been involved in fundraising tourna-ments for [over] 20 years and I’ve neverseen anything like the JK Cancer Fund’sDrive Away Cancer. People come awayknowing exactly what they are there for –to help.”

James P. Gills YMCA Adult Mem-ber & Wellness Services Director DeniseFerrara says, “When these kids come inhere and see the pool and the kids’ gym, they are in awe! This program is great forsurvivors, but it is also good to see theirkids making connections after goingthrough so much.” Denise has a strongconnection to Sue that began long beforeshe supported her in her efforts fundrais-ing. The two ladies became friends 18years ago and bonded on the bleacherswatching their kids play baseball, asspending late nights at the field in theirroles as team moms. Denise jerked herthumb toward Sue, “This one will yell at

you about staying up with your mammo-grams.” Sue adds, “Moms always putthemselves last, but keeping up withmammograms is important.”

Every year, members of the commu-nity show up to support Drive AwayCancer and this year you can too. Thereare many opportunities to support thecharity through donations, hole sponsor-ships, volunteering, and participating as agolfer. This is an outing where everyonehas fun! There are great raffles, prizes, games set up at holes and more. Raffletickets can win you big! How about RuthEckerd Hall performances, and tickets tobig-name hockey and baseball games, plus restaurants gift certificates, gift bas-kets and much more! Sue and Cody arediligently gathering goodies. Sue says,“We always have so much great stuff. Iwant everyone who buys a raffle ticket towin something!”

JK Cancer Fund raises fundsthroughout the year on the website,www.jkcancerfundinc.org, where you alsocan download forms for both sponsor-ships and registration.

For more information, to register, donate for the raffles, volunteer or in-quire about sponsorships, please con-tact Sue Millian at (727) 862-2100 or(727) 809-1695, [email protected] or [email protected].

According to the National FireProtection Association (NFPA) thereis an average of 48,000 electrical firesper year. These fires cause approxi-mately $1.5 billion in property dam-age and are responsible for 500 deathsand 1,100 injuries each year.

Don’t be part of electrical fire sta-tistics! Be aware of the commoncauses of electrical fires and how youcan reduce them.

Reduce Electrical Fire Risk atHome:

Look around for electrical hazardsin your home and correct them. Hereare some common hazards:

• Electrical cords under rugs, inwalking pathways, or pinched behindfurniture

• Overloaded outlets• Laptops and phones charging

on beds or sofasPractice electrical safety. Basic

tips to protect your family include:• Unplug items from overloaded

outlets: Fires often start when toomany items are plugged into a singleoutlet or circuit overloading them

• Use extension cords properly:Especially with appliances which gen-erate heat such as space heaters, irons, and toasters. Extension cords are de-signed for temporary use; not perma-nent.

• Unplug appliances by graspingthe plug: Not doing so may result indamage to the cord which can lead tofire or electric shock.

• Use light bulbs with the correctwattage: Using bulbs where thewattage is too high can overload thefixture or wiring. Over time this cancause an electrical fire.

Evaluate Electrical Systems Every10 Years

East Lake Fire District recom-mends having a licensed electrician re-view your home every 10 years.Electricians can:

• Ensure circuit breakers areworking properly

• Place ground-fault circuit inter-rupter (GFCI) outlets near sinks, bathrooms, and outdoors to prevent

electrocution • Install tamper-resistant recepta-

cles that prevent young children fromaccessing outlets

• Evaluate your entire electricalsystem to ensure it is safe and meetselectrical code. Some of our residen-tial structures have older electricalwiring system using aluminum alloyand early wiring methods. Licensedelectricians can evaluate these systems

and recommend safety upgrades to re-duce electrical fire risk.

Know the Warning SignsCall 911 immediately if you no-

tice warning signs such as:• Arcs, sparks or short circuits• Sizzling or buzzing sounds• Vague burning odorImmediate attention to these

signs can save lives and prevent anelectrical fire.

Call a licensed professionalelectrician if you have electricalconcerns including:

• Frequently blown fuses ortripped circuit breakers

• Dim or flickering lights

• Bulbs that wear out too fast• Overheated plugs, cords, or

switches• Shock or mild static electricity

when touching a switch or outlet• Loose outlets or unusually

warm or faulty outlets or switches

Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10Years

All smoke alarms have a life spanof about 10 years and should be re-placed when they reach that point.Look for the date of manufacture todetermine the age of your home’s de-tectors. Hard-wired and intercon-nected smoke alarms should bereplaced by a licensed electrician.

Wheelchairs 4 Kids, a local 501(C) 3 organization, is dedicated toimproving the lives of children withphysical disabilities by providingwheelchairs, home and vehicle modifi-cations as well as assistive and thera-peutic equipment at no charge to thefamilies.

Many children in the UnitedStates faced with living with physicaldisabilities are in wheelchairs that aretoo small, in disrepair, or do not fitthe needs of the child. Children out-grow their wheelchairs before govern-ment or insurance programs will allowfor a replacement. Not only is it un-safe for a child to be in a chair that isinadequate for their needs; it can im-pact their health in numerous ways in-cluding scoliosis, respiratory problemsand pressure sores. In addition, fami-lies are faced with trying to care fortheir special needs children in homes

that have not been modified to meettheir specific circumstances. Wheel-chairs 4 Kids is working hard to ad-dress this neglected need. Experience the Amazing Power of Grace andFaith at Grace and Faith Church in Tampa

By Marcy Sanford

The members of Grace and FaithChurch have seen first-hand examplesof God’s miraculous work. Located at12749 W. Hillsborough Avenue,Grace and Faith Church brings speak-ers to the Tampa church to tell of theirencounters with God and the miraclesthat he has bestowed upon them. Youdon’t have to be a member of thechurch to come to one of their specialspeaker series, and Pastor Robert Scar-allo would like to invite you to comeexperience the amazing power ofgrace and faith.

Miraculously Healed, March 20,10:30 a.m.

In 1997 Dr. Tom Renfro, a well-respected physician in Norton, Va.,was diagnosed with the rarest form oflymphoma. By the time Tom receivedhis diagnosis he was already in the finalstage of the cancer and doctors toldhim and his family that he would notlive and there was not anything theycould do to help him. Over the next

year, Tom’s cancer started overtakinghis body, but his faith in God and thepower of prayer never ceased. Monthsafter he was diagnosed, tumors werevisible all over his body and bloodclots had begun targeting his majororgans. Tom turned to the congrega-tion at his church, his patients, and re-ligious groups such as The 700 Clubto help him pray. And after 40 daysand 40 nights of prayer, a miracle hap-pened. In an attempt to extend Tom’slife so he could spend Christmas withhis family, doctors administered onedose of chemotherapy and the tumorsbegan to instantly disappear.

“Occasionally, you see things thatyou don’t have a good explanationfor,” says Dr. Woodley, one of Tom’sdoctors. “This first round ofchemotherapy, we were seeing re-sponses in hours, where these lymphnodes were shrinking. I have neverseen a response like this before. It wasa rather dramatic experience.”

Nineteen years later, Dr. TomRenfro is still cancer free. He’ll besharing his miraculous story about the

amazing healing powers of God’s lovethe morning of March 20 at 10:30 atGrace and Faith Church.

“As humans, we are fascinatedwith stories,” says Pastor Robert.“Our church is filled with people withstories. Everyone has their own crisisbut you can be healed.”

Being Kidnapped Saved Her Life,April 24, 10:30 a.m.

In 2005, Ashley Smith’s life wasin shambles. She was addicted tomethamphetamines, had given up cus-tody of her daughter to an aunt, andwas living by herself in a small apart-ment when Brian Nichols shot himselfout of custody, killing at least onedeputy, a court employee, as well asthe sitting judge, and an off-duty fed-eral Agent he carjacked, before home-invading Ashley and taking herhostage. A major news event in At-lanta, this event was also the basis forthe motion picture “Captive”, whichwas produced by Paramount Picturesand recently released to theaters in2015.

Ashley decided that night to stopusing drugs forever, “I was forcedwith the decision of whether or not Iwas going to use drugs with BrianNichols that night. Drugs had been away of life that I had let consume mefor many years before that and I had achoice - whether I was going to use

them or not. It was almost as if Jesustook the body of Brian Nichols in thatone moment and said, “Do you wantto do this or do you want to have adifferent life?”

Throughout the 7 hours that shewas held captive, Ashley, who hadbeen desperately trying to get her lifeback in order, talked to Brian abouther life and her daughter and read apassage from the Bible and The Pur-pose Driven Life to him. Ashleyhelped Brian consider how God could

use him if he turned himself in and thefollowing morning he did so.

On Sunday morning, April 24, at10:30 Ashley will share the amazingstory of how God changed not justone life but two that fateful evening.

“Ashley’s story illustrates fourspiritual truths that give us hope andencouragement for those difficulttimes in our lives,” says Pastor and Au-thor Rick Warren. “First, no matterwhat bad decisions you’ve made, youdon’t have to stay stuck in your past.

Your past is past, and it’s never toolate to start over. Second, God’s pur-pose for your life is greater than anyproblems you’re going through.Third, the Bible really changes people. And finally, the fourth truth is thatGod has the power to help you overany addiction.”

“At Grace and Faith Church webelieve that grace will take you fromwhere you are and faith will take youto where you’ve never been,” says Pas-tor Robert. “God so loved the Worldmeans that it doesn’t matter if you’rethe richest person on Wall Street orthe poorest person in the world, everyone needs Jesus and God can touchand fill the empty spots in your life.”

church will also be hosting a morninginterview, followed by a 5 p.m. semi-nar with Dr. Caroline Leaf, one of theworld’s modern pioneers of neuroplas-ticity, a scientific discovery that coun-ters the former thinking that thehuman brain cannot rejuvenate itself, but rather responds with new brainneuron regeneration to both positiveand negative stimuli that we can sig-nificantly control! Dr Leaf authoredthe book "Switch Your Brain On,"and the afternoon seminar is entitled"Detoxing Your Brain." A $20 regis-tration fee is requested for participa-tion at the afternoon seminar, whichcan be paid at the door.

Pastor Robert and his family have

their own first-hand experience withmiracles. He says, “When my grand-daughter was born prematurely, wewere told she would be dead in themorning because her body was notproducing oxygen. For more than 2hours the machines she was hookedup to could not find any oxygen in herblood at all. She was taken out of herincubator to give us the chance tohold her and say, ‘Goodbye.’ After 14hours of intense prayer, all of her vitalscame up. Today she is a happy, healthy, normal 2 year old. Accordingto her doctors and nurses it was a mir-acle that she not only lived but did notsuffer any brain damage.”

The Pastor adds, “We see a lot ofmiracles in our church. God loves usand He wants to intervene in our lives. When you believe in miracles, you willbegin to see them in your everydaylife. The bottom line of every storyabout a miracle is God cares, Godhears, and God acts out of love.”

Grace and Faith Church is lo-cated at 12749 W. HillsboroughAve. Everyone is invited to attendthe special speakers series or theircontemporary church service Sun-days at 10:30 a.m. Grace and FaithChurch also has events and disciple-ship for people of all ages. If you’ve never tried Malaysiancuisine before, it’s a culinary adventurethat originates from Malaysia’s multi-ethnic population of people who hailfrom all parts of Asia, India and Eura-sia. What that means for us is that wehave the opportunity to try some ofthe most delicious dishes from thatpart of the world right here in ourback yard. In fact, Bunga Raya is oneof the best-kept secrets in our area!Located at 4952 Ridgemoor Blvd inthe Ridgemoor Commons shoppingcenter, I’m sure you’ve passed it onyour way through the Starbucks drive-through only to wonder what BungaRaya meant. Well, it means “HibiscusFlower.” If you didn’t know that, I betyou also are unaware of just how deli-cious Malaysian food can be, so comeon in for lunch or dinner and you’llfind that there’s something for every-one (even the kids) at Bunga Raya!

Owner of Bunga Raya and SushiChef Lee Onesty, is too humble to

brag, but she has many years of experi-ence as both a chef and as a restaurantmanager. In opening her own restau-rant, Onesty has created an environ-ment that is bright, clean and inviting, with a menu to match.

Onesty says, “I want people tocome and experience Malaysian food!”Adding, “Many customers worry thatour food will be too spicy, but I wantto assure you that it’s not. There’ssomething for everybody here.”

Open for lunch and dinner, there’s something simple and welcom-ing about Bunga Raya, Perhaps it’sthat you’re so warmly greeted by thestaff, and often the owner. Perhaps it’sthe delicious smells wafting from thekitchen, or perhaps it’s the fact thatyou’ve just happened upon the some-what hidden treasure that is BungaRaya.

Starters that Delight!First, there’s a lot to choose from!

Regular, Lori Molinari, said, “You’vegot to try the Roti Canai appetizer –

they’re the Indian pan-cakes. They are delicious, delicious, just like every-thing else here!”

There are a great manystarters that wow includingthe Roti Canai, as well asthe Krab Rangoon, theGyoza (dumplings) and theShrimp Tempura appetizer. You might also like theircrispy Spring Rolls, Scal-lops, and Chicken LettuceWraps, all of which are af-fordably priced!

Mark Somers, said,“Great food, awesomepeople, fair prices, a weeklydestination for me!”Adding, “You can’t go wrong – theowner won’t let it happen.”

That’s right; Onesty and her staffare very attentive and helpful when or-dering, especially if you’re new to therestaurant. Chances are, once you’vecome a couple of times, you’ll havemade friends with both the owner, the

staff, and the other patrons who havecome to eat. This seems to be the wayat Bunga Raya. It’s simply a friendly, local restaurant that happens to servefood that is out of this world.

You might even be completelysurprised by what you find, for exam-ple, Bunga Raya regular, Joyce Tucker,

There’s Something for Everyone atBunga Raya Malaysian Restaurant & Sushi Bar!

said, “They’ve got the best chickenwings in town!”

Bunga Raya Serves, Warm, Rich,Delicious Entrees that Rock theSenses!

What kind of Asian food do youlike, because chances are that your fa-vorites are on the menu. Bunga Rayaoffers an amazing array of options, from Malaysian staples like “CurryLaksa” (which is a delicious spicy currynoodle soup) to more traditionalAmerican-favorites like Kung PaoChicken, Teriyaki chicken, Steak,Shrimp or Sea Scallops, Lo Mein, andof course, Sushi. There’s even a kids’menu that makes it easy to take thekids with you when you want to go toyour favorite place, but they still wantto eat chicken fingers! (They also haveother options as well). Once you startcoming to Bunga Raya, you’ll find thateverything you taste is full of flavor, with fresh ingredients, just the rightamount of sweet to temper the spice, and the flavor to make every meal ajoy.

Customer, Zarina Dennis, said,“This is a fantastic place to eat! Every-one is super friendly and the Malaysianfood is very authentic and delicious!

This is my newfavorite place togo!”

Come to theSushi Bar atBunga Raya!

When itcomes to sushi, itall comes down totrust. Trust me onthis one! When of-fered the DragonRoll, I thought Iwould samplesome so as not toruin all of thewonderful dishes that I’d ordered, butmuch to my dismay, this gorgeousdragon appeared on my plate-full ofcolor, exploding with taste, and beforeI knew it, I’d devoured the entire rollall by myself. What’s the popularphrase, “Sorry, not sorry?” It was re-markably fresh, cut into perfectly sizedportions, and plated so beautifully thatI had to take a picture!

While many restaurants add asushi bar as an afterthought, the sushiat Bunga Raya is compelling enoughto be the only draw. The only shame isthat once you try the sushi you might

be too full to enjoy everything else onthe menu! My recommendation forthis is to come back many more timesuntil you’re sure what your favoritesare. Or, better yet, bring your friendsand family and try it all.

More surprises await when itcomes to dessert, as they have a deca-dent array of cheesecakes to choosefrom with incredible flavors, includingoriginal plain, chocolate, turtle, adreamy raspberry champagne, andeven a hibiscus cheesecake! So creativeand delicious, Onesty has thembrought in by Holi-Moli Cheesecakes!

Next time you’re up for an affordablemeal out with your friends or family, try Bunga Raya right here in EastLake; you’ll be so glad you did!
