Many people consider spring a “magical” time of year. Plants begin to grow and flowers blossom. The bustle of life emerges from its winter sleep.
But, for me, that “magical” time of year is starting now — the start of a new school year.
Summers stay sur-prisingly busy here in the East County, but there is this lull, this sleepy feeling that takes over after school is dismissed for the summer each June.
It disappears only after buses wind through our neighborhoods to pick up chattering children and deposit them at school.
I can’t wait.We at the East County
Observer love covering our schools’ activities each year.
And, despite questions about the changes in Florida
Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) grading and overall school performance, we know that our teachers and administrators are work-
ing hard to give our local children the best education possible.
During the school year, we visit our East County schools reli-giously, so we see this work first-hand.
There are lessons in science — everything
from launching bottle rock-ets to robotics and gardening — as well as lessons in the other core subjects.
And, then, there’s just plain fun — like when Willis Principal Bill Stenger was duct-taped to the wall by students as a reward for exceeding their fundraising goals.
Our East County schools know how to make learning exciting for our kids, and we
are confident they’ll do a great job, once again, in the year ahead.
And, to help kick off our school season, the East County Observer has pre-pared its annual Back to School booklet.
In the following pages, you will find a wealth of informa-tion to help prepare you for the school year ahead.
We’ve included contact and other information for each of our East County schools, as well as Parent-Teacher Organization contact information, open-house dates and a letter from each school’s principal.
We hope it helps calm that frantic feeling you, our East County parents, might expe-rience as you sort through school lists, hunt for clothes that fit your child and handle all the other miscellaneous tasks that come with your child’s return to school.
And, so, with that, I say, let the school days begin!

For the last four years at Tara Elementary School, Dr. Linda Fouse has been the queen of costumes.
The longtime educator, who served as Tara’s principal for the last four years, loves to dress up on special occasions — the first day of school, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day, among others.
“I find it gives a connection with the kids,” Fouse said, noting she’s been a safari guide, a leprechaun, Little Bo Peep and other characters. “It relaxes them. It seems to create a calm, fun atmosphere.”
When students arrive on campus this school year, Fouse will greet them dressed for the school’s 2012-2013 medieval theme. But, this time, she’ll be a bystander, of sorts.
Tara’s new principal,
Steve Royce, assumed administrative duties at Tara earlier this summer. Fouse, will work from Tara until her last day, Sept. 30, when she retires. Until then, she will be working with low-performing schools throughout the Manatee County Public School District, helping them navigate state regulations and data and assisting in other ways.
“Mr. Royce has been very kind (to let me work from here),” she said. “It gives me a home base. It’s pretty central, so I can get (to other schools in the district easily). I want to be here (at Tara) for the first day of the year, too. (Being stationed here) gives me an opportunity to say my final goodbyes to the kids.”
Fouse’s career in education happened almost by accident. She had been
studying to go into social work when she had a chance to teach summer school.
“I fell in love with it,” she said of teaching. “I knew it was my calling.”
She started teaching in Manatee County, working in the classroom for 17 years, before shifting into administration at the encouragement of others.
“It was really hard to leave the classroom,” she said. “My most rewarding (years were) teaching fourth-/fifth-grade dropout prevention. They had normal IQs, but couldn’t make it in the classroom. It was so rewarding. They made such progress.”
Eighteen years after the role switch — after serving as an administrator at Prine, Kinnan and Tara elementary schools — Fouse is ready to retire.
“I didn’t think I was going to be ready, but I’m starting to get excited now,” Fouse said. “It’s going to be hard. It’s the children I’m going to miss. It’s the hugs I’ll miss.”

Assistant Principal at Nolan Middle School and Palmetto City Commissioner Tamara Cornwell has always thought of herself as a service-driven woman.
“My father taught us service over self,” said Cornwell. “He always taught us to leave a place better than it was when you arrived.”
It’s a principle she’s applied throughout her entire life. After earning degrees in radio and television communication, science education and curriculum instruction, the Manatee-raised graduate soon found a way to apply her passion for service.
After having a child, Cornwell left her first job in the communications field for something with a more flexible schedule: substitute teaching.
“My other job required me to be available at the drop of a hat,” she said. “I thought I’d try substitute teaching, and I fell in
love with education.” Cornwell’s background in
science made her especially desirable, and she began teaching eighth-grade science at Lincoln Middle School.
Here, she placed a lot of emphasis on environmentalism, urging her students to recycle and be conscious of other eco-friendly causes.
“I always told them that even one person can make a difference,” she said. “One student asked me, ‘What difference have you made?’”
This innocent question inspired Cornwell to take a closer look at what she’d been doing to make a difference. Noticing that Palmetto had no recycle/reuse program, she decided to run for City Commission. Upon her election, she was instrumental in implementing the city’s first recycling program.
“I was happy to be able to make a difference,” she said. “I
wanted to be able to walk the walk, too. Luckily, the citizens and the other commissioners were behind me on that.”
Today, Cornwell has the unique opportunity to wear two hats: one as the assistant principal at Nolan Middle School and one as a city commissioner of 17 years. She
says her knowledge of what’s happening in the education world helps the schools and the community to work hand in hand to best serve Palmetto.
“You really can make a difference to the students and to the community if you’re willing to put in the time,” she said.

For Savannah Marquez, the playground is a land of make-believe and dreams. It’s a place where she and her friends pretend they’re mermaids swimming around the ocean. Beneath the water they can breathe, talk and even out-swim sharks.
“The best part about being a mermaid is changing colors,” says 4-year-old Savannah, whose brunette tendrils are being swept up into two per-fect braids on this Wednesday afternoon. “There’s a rainbow of colors all the way to the end of your fin.”
This fall, Savannah will be attending kindergarten along with her best friend, Ali, from Primrose School in Lakewood Ranch.
“She likes dinosaurs and dragons and lizards,” Savannah says. “I like dolphins and mer-maids and lions. Ali pretends she’s a lizard and changes into dinosaurs and dragons. What if a rainbow dragon was real and
I touched it?”Savannah loved preschool
from the first moment she walked in the door.
“I think that it was great and I love the food that they have and nap time,” she says. “My favorite food is meatloaf. Sometimes we have carrots and beans, and I don’t like those.”
She’s a little nervous about starting kindergarten, but there are a number of things she expects to learn. Some involve building rocket ships; others involve planets.
“I think I’ll like kindergar-ten,” Savannah says. “We’re gonna do different things we haven’t did. We will have to build a rocket ship arch with paper and cut it out and put some things on it so it’s like a rocket. We will learn about stars and the sun and make space planets. It will be too hard to make Saturn because it has rings.”
Her favorite planet is Earth because it’s green and blue
— her favorite colors.“It is round with no rings,”
she says. “It’s nine miles long.”At home, Savannah has a dog
named Maggie. She’s a “regu-lar” dog — not too big and really furry.
“She likes persons and is so excited to see everybody in my house,” Savannah says. “She’s
9, and she has white and light brown and dark brown hair. She has color everywhere. I’m bigger than her.”
She may only be going into kindergarten, but Savannah has already chosen her future career.
“I want to be a teacher with a red shirt,” she says.

Even at the age of 4, it was apparent that Maddie Whittemore was a giver. She was only in preschool when she decided that her long hair would be in better hands as a donation to Locks of Love, a nonprofit that donates hairpieces to young cancer patients.
“It was the only way we could get her to cut her hair,” said her mother, Marla.
Since then, Maddie has racked up more than 500 hours of volunteering for various organizations and has donated more than 60 inches of her hair — all at the age of 12.
Maddie has spent the last four years regularly volunteer-ing at the Pinnacle Academy — a private school for chil-dren with autism.
“My brother, Max, has gone here for six years,” she said. “I thought, ‘I love Max so much, why don’t I give it a try?’ It’s
really fun here.”The academy teaches
children ages 2 through 18, but Maddie spends most of her time working with the younger kids. She spends time learning each child’s unique personality traits and needs, and she helps them develop their language and com-munication skills. She says she enjoys the detective-like nature of learning how best to help each child.
“I like getting to know the kids better,” said Maddie. “I get to teach them how to do something, and we’re friends forever. Some of the kids can’t even talk, but we’re still friends.”
One technique used at the academy is called an inte-grated play group, which involves one therapist, one special-needs child and one volunteer child, who all play together until the therapist is no longer needed to supervise
the activities. This helps the special-needs
children learn appropriate ways to interact with others, and Maddie says she is able to apply a lot of what she learns at home.
“I can use a lot of the skills I learn here with Max,” she said. “I think it makes me closer to him.”
Although Maddie says she isn’t sure what drives her to volunteer, she hopes other kids will follow suit.
“I think some people might be scared or nervous, but they shouldn’t be,” she said. “I don’t think anyone would regret doing this; it’s one of the best things that’s ever hap-pened to me.”
Nick FriedmanMaddie Whittemore, 12, has already compiled more than 500 hours of volunteer work at various organizations.

Welcome! I look forward to teaming our efforts for another successful year for
your child. B.D. Gullett Elementary students strive to excel in a nurturing and challenging academic envi-ronment, sup-
ported by an integral partner-ship between staff, parents and community members.
Our faculty is comprised of a talented team of teach-ers and instructional support members. More than 85% of our teachers have dual certifications and more than one-third have advanced degrees or National Board Certification. Our school has
achieved a school accountabil-ity grade of “A” every year.
Volunteerism is alive and well at B.D. Gullett Elementary, with more than 6,000 hours of vol-unteer service each year. Our volunteers serve as tutors, field trip chaperones, PTO and SAC members, test proctors and office or Media Center assis-tants and many other roles.
Gullett continues to respond to our community’s request for
a variety of affordable after-school enrichment clubs. For a small enrollment fee, students may participate weekly in gar-dening, board games, comput-ers, Spanish, dance, arts and crafts, cooking, book study, cre-ative writing and many others.
Clubs are sponsored by staff members, and parents are welcome to assist with a club matching their area of interest.
Please join us for our fourth annual Neal Communities Golf Challenge. The event is scheduled for Sept. 22, at the University Park Country Club.
We appreciate your support of our major school fundraiser this year. Contact our PTO president, Melissa Diaz, at [email protected] to learn how you can be involved in this community event.

Welcome back to school! We are looking forward to a year of learning and partnerships. Here at Freedom, we are committed to helping every
student succeed in school and beyond. This year, we are celebrating 10 years of Freedom. Since Freedom opened its doors in 2002, our focus has always been academic excellence.
Teaching every child to become a life-long learner and developing a strong sense of patriotism in them exemplifies our commitment to these children and families.
We want to communicate our goals and beliefs about the importance of partnering with the families we serve. At Freedom Elementary, we believe it is important for families and school to work together and share in the
responsibility for student success. We welcome family members’ volun-teering during school and becoming members of our PTO.
Through this partnership, students know the importance of schools and families together supporting their academic growth. With your help, a child’s potential is limitless. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer with your children. We can’t wait to welcome our new and returning Freedom families at our back to school event Thursday, Aug. 16.

Our school also provides a quiet environment for the students to learn all day long. We have special classes each week that include Art, Music, IE2 (Engineering), Computers and my personal favorite, Physical Education (PE). If it were my choice I’d give Freedom Elementary an A+.

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year, Wildcats!
Our science lab, greenhouse, garden and butterfly areas are
ready and wait-ing for you to arrive! Plans for this school year have been going on all summer. You are going to discover that many of our
teachers — including your principal — have been taking classes this summer so we can bring some new and exciting things into your classrooms. However, some things are familiar. We will continue to offer the Running Club and enrichment activities after school. Schedules will be out during the first quarter.
With the support of our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), community members, busi-ness partners and staff, McNeal Elementary is a great school. As we open our doors to new families Aug. 20, I extend an invitation to join the McNeal PTO. It is a wonderful opportu-nity to meet many people who make a difference in the life of your child.
We look forward to seeing you from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, during our open house. This is your chance to meet your teachers and classmates.
Looking forward to this year! — Norma Scott, principal

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Tara Elementary and my first year as your principal. I am
extremely excited to lead the Knights as we transition into a Pre-K to sixth-grade elementary school. There is limited
space still available in our sixth-grade classes for the upcoming year.
Back to School Night is scheduled for Aug. 16, and I look forward to meeting every-one during that evening. If you are a new family or have a kindergarten student, we will have a special orientation at 4:30 p.m.
Returning families will meet their teachers, visit their classroom and reconnect with
classmates from 5 to 6 p.m.Partnering with families will
be one of our focuses for this upcoming year. We encourage families to volunteer, join our school’s PTO, become a busi-
ness partner and support your child by asking them what they learn at school each day. After-school enrichment pro-grams are available to enhance your child’s experience.
Our theme for this com-ing year will be “Quest for Knowledge.” The school’s decorations and staff outfits will focus around this theme on the first day of school. Together we will embark on our “Quest” when school resumes Aug. 20.

Welcome to Willis Elementary School, home of the Geckos. We are excited about all we have
been planning for the 2012-2013 school year. This will be Willis’ eighth year welcoming students and parents from our community, and we’re honored
to have this opportunity to serve. The Willis staff is committed
to excellence in teaching and providing an environment where creative minds can flourish and excel. In fact, this summer our entire instructional staff attended a week-long training where we learned how to modify instruc-tion, so the information more easily enters and remains in long-term memory.
An emphasis will continue to be placed not only on achieving our highest academic standards, but also on teaching students
to respect themselves and each other and becoming a positive influence within our school and community and to “live above the line.”
At Willis, we welcome and encourage our parents and com-munity members to become involved and are incredibly grate-ful for the strong parent support we enjoy. We have many ways you can support our school and look forward to working with you. Willis is a success, thanks to a strong home-school connec-tion.
The 2012-2013 school year promises to be an exciting, fun-filled and productive year. Please plan to attend our open house from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 16, when you will be able to find out who your teacher will be and checkout your new classroom. We look forward to seeing you all soon.

CreativityIt’s well past 10 a.m.
and Alex Kumar has just awakened. He stumbles down the hall in a T-shirt and shorts, rubbing his eyes and probably already day-dreaming about the robot he wants to invent one day that will remind him to do various tasks such as going to bed earlier.
If Alex had such a robot, it could tell him when to stop reading at night. It could tell him to do his homework and clean his room. It could also wake him up in the morning. But for the time being, Alex’ mom, Lana, is reminding her son of those things by telling him to stop his “diddle-daddling.”
“Boys are different because a lot of time we are misunderstood by people,” Alex said. “I wanted to speak out for the boys.”
He got his chance when he entered the Tropicana
4H Public Speaking Contest — and won for the second consecutive year — with his speech: “Boys are Just Different.”
“There were a lot of different topics to choose from,” Alex said. “I chose one I knew the audience could relate to. It’s a message to boys’ moms to explain our differences.”
According to this 11-year-old, boys like to have fun first, and work later. They’re sloppier and more laid-back. They’re picky about what they eat, except for dessert. They hate veggies, unless it’s bok choy. They love science and anything related to technology. And, although girls say it’s pointless, boys think video games are a good way to use their imagination.
In his spare time, Alex, who will attend Nolan Middle School this fall, loves designing new gadgets that

I would like to welcome you to Braden River Middle School, home of the Panthers.
We have been working hard all summer planning for an exciting new school year. Students should be prepared to come to school with the needed supplies and a positive attitude.
Braden River has a reputation of embrac-ing diversity, which is seen in our classrooms, on our school campus and at all school events. Students are taught the importance of respecting each other’s differences, being polite and making a positive influence on their community. In addition, we were awarded a grade of A by the state of Florida. We will continue to focus on the highest academic standards for all students.
We welcome all families and community members to become involved by volunteer-ing, becoming a member of
our PTSO or joining our school advisory counsel or SAC. We also encour-age you to partner with your child’s teachers to reinforce the school rules and home connec-tion.
Our staff is excited for another great year, and we are looking forward to seeing you at this year’s schedule pickup from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, and at our open house at 6 p.m. Aug. 30.
Parents may contact the school with any questions regarding the upcoming school year by calling 751-7080 or visiting our web page.

For Back to School
Jacob Kargauer, president of the Braden River High School Technology Student Association (TSA), didn’t always know he had a knack for technology. The recent high school graduate’s first foray into the field came in a middle school tech class, in which the students were required to build websites as part of the curriculum. But Kargauer found that what began as a school assignment would become a hobby he’d carry with him throughout his high school years.
“We had to do website design for class,” said Kargauer. “But, I found that I actually enjoyed it.”
From there, Kargauer continued designing websites, and when he got to high school, he joined the TSA, in which he participated throughout all four years. Kargauer says the club was
a good opportunity to meet friends, and he enjoyed the competitions and opportunity to travel.
“We would work on a topic for an entire year,” he said. “They would give you a topic that you had to research, and then you would take it to the competitions. We got to travel all around the U.S.”
In his senior year, Kargauer’s adviser chose him as president of the club, which recently returned as one of the most successful teams at the 34th annual National Technology Student Association conference in Nashville, Tenn.
The competition covered a range of events, including construction renovation, photography, prepared presentation, prototype manufacturing, transportation modeling and Kargauer’s favorite: website design.

Braden River High placed in the top 10 in 15 out of the 33 events, which served as a fitting way for Kargauer to wrap up his time with the club.
“That’s probably my favorite memory,” he said. “I’m going to miss competing and meeting new people. We put a lot of time and effort into it.”
As he prepares to start college at Florida State
University this fall, where he will double major in mathematics and education, Kargauer still plans to use his experience with computers and website design on the side. He hopes to become a high school math teacher.
“I’m excited for a new experience,” he said. “I’ll get to meet new people and try new things and get to know a new city.”

NoTe FRoM The PRINcIPAl:
Nolan Middle School consis-tently demonstrates extremely high standards of excellence. Faculty, staff, parents and stu-dents work in tireless collabora-
tion to help our students make great gains in curricular and extracurricular endeavors.
Notably, through hard work and
ultimate dedication, Nolan has earned an “A” grade from the Department of Education during the past seven years.
Science, technology, engineer-ing and math are an integral part of the Nolan curriculum, as well as the Gifted Program. And, once again, Nolan Middle School Technology Students of America (TSA) are No. 1 in the nation.
The arts program is exemplary at Nolan; during the 2011-12 school year, orchestra, band and chorus received superior rat-ings at the Music Performance Assessment. Nolan also has a strong drama program.
We are looking forward to an incredibly wonderful school year.

As the new principal of Braden River High School, it is my sincere pleasure and honor to welcome you to the 2012-13 school year. BRHS enjoys a rich history of academic and cultural excellence that is a result of a collegial partnership between the school staff and parents who provide a diversity of experience for the students.
As the school year begins, I am excited to announce that BRHS is a Wall to Wall Model Academy school. After an exten-sive review by the National Career Academy Coalition, all four of our Academies — Arts and Communications,
Business and International Studies, Engineering Design
and Leadership, and Science Technology and Health — were awarded model status. BRHS is one of only two schools in the state of Florida to receive this designation.
BRHS welcomes all families and com-munities to become
involved with the Pirate Nation as we continue our successful tradition of being a Wall to Wall model school.
The BRHS faculty and staff is excited for the beginning of a new school year and is looking forward to meeting our incom-ing Pirates at our new student
I love my school because of the opportunities that they provide our student body. So many options, so many activities, and so many traditions make it fun to be a student at Braden River High School. I love the River.

Welcome to all new and returning Mustangs! In May 2012, Lakewood Ranch High was named the winner of the
Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award for Class 6A by the Florida High School Athletic Association for having the most success-
ful overall athletic program in the state in its classification.
Lakewood Ranch athletes captured state championships in boys golf, boys and girls ten-nis, cross country, track and swimming. In addition, the Mustangs baseball and softball teams advanced to the final four in the state.
We also offer an award-win-ning fine-arts program, includ-ing band, orchestra, chorus and drama, as well as many vocational classes and clubs.
LRHS offers something great for everyone. We encourage all students to get involved with an organization on campus. See you soon.

Most parents do everything they can to teach these Life skills to their children. However, with all of our 21 century demands, parents need help After School. The 2-4 hours the kids spend after school before their parents get home are some of the most important hours in a child’s life.
How is your child spending their time After School ?
Let’s look at this example: The average child spends 3-4 hours somewhere after school before their parents come home. There are about 200 days in a school year.
200 days times 3 hours is 600 hours a year. What is your child doing during these 600 hours?
Some go to baby sitters. Some go home and play with their friends doing whatever they want. Others get into serious trouble. Not our students.
So why wouldn’t you let your child spend this valuable time learning skills that will last a lifetime?
Bostock’s After School Martial Arts will help prepare your child to succeed, not only at school, but in Life. With our modern teaching method and the traditional values of the martial arts, we will help your child bring out the best in themselves this year!

Fifty meters from the finish line during the 3,200-meter run at states, Olivia Ortiz heard a pop and fell to the ground. She was taken away in an ambulance and treated for a broken femur in her right leg, which required three surgeries.
As soon as she woke up, Ortiz asked her doctor if she’d be able to run again. The hopes are high and the bone is healing well, but she’s taking it slow and says patience is key.
The race was the last one of her junior year — and it was supposed to be her strongest.
“Your junior year is when colleges look at you,” Ortiz says. “You’re definitely on their radar if you stand out. I wanted to break all my personal bests.
“I have two small screws by my knee and two by my hip. I had a great recovery, but obviously with my senior year coming up, this is not the summer I planned on.”
Ortiz has already garnered 10 awards this year. She’s been named the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Track Athlete of the Year and Bradenton Herald’s All-Area Athlete of the Year for track and field. Lakewood Ranch High School has named her its Scholar Athlete for a 4.0-plus GPA, Most Valuable Track Athlete and Track and Field Team Leadership Award recipient. She was regional, district and county champion in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A 1,600 meters and regional/district champion in the class 3A 3,200 meters. This, of course, doesn’t count ESPN naming her its high school Florida cross country Gatorade Runner of the Year in 2011. She also has the best 5K time for the 2011-2012 school year.
But, she’s in no rush to get back. Right now, she’s following her physical therapy exercises precisely. Coach Chuck Reda, her former soccer coach, is also her physical therapist.
“He’s been by my side and sets goals for me every week,” Ortiz says. “He’s definitely someone who inspires me to do my best. I also have a great support system with my family, who helps me to stay positive and be in the right mindset.”
Until she’s cleared for running, Ortiz is using the stationary bike and has started swimming to keep in shape. Her main goal is to build back her quad muscles.
“I know I’ll be OK,” Ortiz says. “Running does not define me, it’s just my great passion. It’s definitely something you grow attached to. Right now, I’m learning so much about myself and to not to take things for granted. The journey is just fun, and I’ll be able to run again. I’m on the road to recovery.”

This will be my first year at The
Tabernacle Christian School and I am very blessed to be here. I look
forward to meeting all of our families and being active in the Sarasota community.
Our vision will continue to go forward in the same direc-tion. We will continue to offer a strong academic curriculum supported by a biblical world view that develops strong moral character in our students. This year students can look forward to an updated computer lab with brand-new computer
equipment. Last year we introduced an
incredible new science lab, and our students definitely reaped the benefits. Two of our students placed first in the Sarasota County Science Fair; the win-ning students represented the elementary and middle school.
With our athletic teams and award-winning, fine-arts pro-grams in full swing, this will be
another exciting year for all of us at The Tabernacle Christian School.
