From The Desk Of...The CEOPerhaps you’ve noticed over the last couple of months that I’ve been writing the CEO message; Jim and Karen are retiring from the Monthly Grapevine and moving into the next phase of their careers. If you know my parents, Jim and Karen, you will know that “retirement” does not mean the traditional “take it easy and stop working.” You will still see them around at different events and mixers as they are both still very active in the community. They are still the owners of the Monthly Grapevine but off to do other exciting ventures including the opening of FYI Media, a digital signage fi rm. FYI will also offer design and marketing. As the new CEO, I am very excited to grow “the vine” in new directions while preserving the magazine that you can count on for the latest and the best.

And if you don’t know me, I’ve been working with the Monthly Grapevine for over 12 years; Karen has taught me the best of the business and thanks to her I have a well rounded sense of the publishing industry, including graphics, accounting and mailing demographics. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix, graduating class of 2001. I live in Stockton with my husband and my 10-year old daughter.

I hope that all of our readers and clients join me in congratulating Jim and Karen

as they embark on their new adventures. And, of course, make sure if you see them around town, to let them know how much you enjoy seeing the Grapevine in your mailbox each month!

Happy New Year to you and your families; here’s to everyone embarking on a new adventure of their own in 2012!

Sincerely,

Sonya North - CEO

EWHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Wander Through Treasureland! As I look out the window this December, Mt. Diablo is covered in the brightest orange, red and pink sky. This wonderful sunset is just one of the many luxuries of living in the Far East County. With sound of the fi nal tractors putting the farmlands to bed for the winter and the hint of holiday décor in the local storefronts, it is clear, the season has begun. With that in mind, today’s snoop is taking me to Brentwood’s best kept secret.

As I travel North on Highway 4, I remember the many times I have visited this wonderful antique store. Located directly across from Big B Lumber, it is really easy to fi nd. As usual, there are several cars parked outside and a multitude of shoppers wondering around the magical cubicles fi lled with treasures from the past. Antique Co-Op is made up of 20 stores under one roof. With new, vintage and antique items, you can spend an hour reminiscing of the past and enjoying the excitement of fi nding something you can’t live without.

I always enjoy listening to the customers as they chat about a certain item. Some seasoned veteran antique shoppers are aware of the item’s heritage and its value and others just like to pick it up and admire its beauty. It is not uncommon to hear the words, “This is a great price.” I think the thing I like most is my personal fond memories of my extended families time at the dinner table. Whether it is at Grandma’s for Christmas or just a pasta dinner with the Italian family, I can fi nd pieces of each of these plates of serving dishes nestled amongst these hidden treasures. And, they are really helpful at fi nding a particular pattern or piece from a set that has been in the family for years.

They have large and small pieces of furniture, jewelry, home and garden, tools, vintage clothing and props, books, sports memorabilia, Disney videos, toys and more. Coke-a-cola and Elvis are a regular site. I like to come here to fi nd just the right serving dish for something I am taking to a friend’s house to share so that I can leave it behind as a gift. Sure beats the heck out of a Tupperware dish with the masking tape with your name on the bottom that you never see again. And, it is really fun to match the dish to your special treat. Many of my friends are collectors, so I can also fi nd just the right gift for special occasions.

Antique Co-op is located at 6675A Brentwood Blvd. in Brentwood. They can be contacted at 925-516-1663 or visit them at www.antiquecoop.net.

I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say; there are thousands of items to see. Each individual has their own section of the store and can display to their heart’s content. Some are clearly vintage while others love the linens and lace. Every time I visit, there is something new I have never seen before. One gentleman was admiring a beautiful curio and talking with the manager about its price. Another thing I like about this store is you might be able to negotiate with its owner; how fun is that? As he and his wife quietly discussed its value, the person at the front desk was checking on the phone with its owner to see what the fi nal price would be. I am pretty sure it made its way into their car to take home for that perfect place in their home.

So Antique Co-op, the Monthly Grapevine gives you fi ve 78 records for continuing to bring yesterday’s treasures to our shoppers with such a unique and fun experience. Your kindness at the front door is a plus and your friendly smile an added attraction. Pretty sure I will be back before the holidays to fi nd those little stocking stuffers that always marvel my family. Who will be snooped next? It could be you!

PRUDENTIAL REALTY

Know Your OptionsIf you are struggling to make ends meet and have negative equity in your home it is important to know what options are available to you. There are a number of different actions that may be made to help you mitigate your fi nancial situation. These include bankruptcy, modifi cation, short sale and foreclosure.

Many more lenders are now offering modifi cations to homeowners in distress. These are often more of a temporary solution as the banks seldom offer principal reductions. Usually, the bank will offer to lower you payment over a fi xed period of time. The problem with these terms is that without a principle reduction you are not building equity. In today’s market where a home’s value may be upside down or have a negative equity of over 70%, current appreciation projections show it would take years just to break even on the balance of the loan. This makes your situation like a long-term lease.

Foreclosure or simply walking away from the home is one option. There are, of course, pros and cons to this approach. The legal repercussions can vary depending on each individual’s situation. California is a non-recourse state and has what is called a one-action rule, which means, generally speaking, you can walk away with little or no legal consequence. These rules can apply to primary homes and second or investment properties. I would defi nitely advise anyone seeking foreclosure to seek legal advice for their individual scenarios.

If you are considering a default, I highly suggest you look into a short sale option. Choosing a short sale will put you back in control of your life. A short sale is when the borrower/owner sells a property during a pre-foreclosure process. It is called a short sale because the owner will sell the property “short” of the balance owed on the note, not because it is quick. Because a short sale is perceived as a proactive choice by the borrower the credit compiling agencies tend to score it higher than a foreclosure or a deed-in-lieu.

I would always advise my clients to seek advice from an attorney under bankruptcy protection. Many homeowners have incurred a substantial amount of debt in this economy, and bankruptcy may be a

good option to help you afford and keep your home by eliminating burdensome debt. Although legally you may not need to pursue a short sale after the bankruptcy, in regard to credit building it is still a good option.

Let me be clear, I am not advocating to anyone to ignore their fi nancial obligations. What I am saying is that you should look at your own situation and make the decision that is best for YOU and your family and not the bank. It is very important that you should be informed about your options and possible consequences.

Remember to always seek legal and tax advice before making any decisions. Loan modifi cation, short sale or Strategic Default; which one is right for you? Call me today for a FREE no obligation one-hour consultation to discuss and compare your options. Take control of your situation and start the New Year fresh. Call today.

Set aside.3. Coat a 12-inch pizza pan with olive oil, then sprinkle on the cornmeal. Roll the dough into a circle and place on the pan, pushing the edges to the rim.4. Spread the tomato sauce on the dough & sprinkle on the grated Romano cheese. Top with the chopped spinach and then drizzle olive oil over the spinach. TIMELY FEATURE ARTICLE

Small Ways To Make Your Holiday Party A Big SuccessLooking to make a big impression at your holiday party? Think small -- as in small plates that allow you to showcase different colorful dishes and cuisines.

With small plates gaining popularity in wine bars and restaurants nationwide, many people are tapping into this trend in home entertaining by getting more creative with their holiday menus and decorations. In short, small details and dishes can make a big impression.

Great for the Host - A small plate party makes life easier for the host. You don’t have to fret over a sit-down dinner with an appetizer, main course and dessert, and guests can eat whenever they arrive.

When using small plates remember that you shouldn’t only prepare one-to-two bite hors d’oeuvres. Each dish should be thought of as a mini course on a small

plate, featuring 4-6 bites of food for eating when sitting or standing.

Consider different cuisines and colors, like mozzarella and tomato with basil or Greek stuffed grape leaves and olives, arranged on small plates, such as the Libbey Just Tastings mini dinnerware collection. These days there are even trendy cookbooks devoted solely to miniature appetizers and desserts, such as those from author Robert Zollweg. Both the Just Tastings collection and cookbook line are available at Bed Bath & Beyond.

Get creative and serve-up Spanish, French or Asian dishes. Or go familiar with lollipop lamb chops or hamburger sliders. You can even use the same 4-inch plates for appetizers and desserts, supplementing them with small dessert bowls for little portions.

Mingling and Sampling - This type of party literally allows you to go with the fl ow. Small plates allow guests to mingle and socialize with everyone, compared to sit-down dinners.

Small dishes are also great for guests who want to taste everything but don’t want to appear to be holiday gluttons. Such plates are also perfect for kids who have big eyes but small stomachs.

Great for Presentation - When it comes to parties, the visual impact of your food is as important as its taste. This is where small plates shine, as little tastes can have a big impact with their colors, shapes and designs.

Small decorating details also matter. So add a little cranberry or holly to each plate as garnish. Or use wire ribbon throughout your party space on doorknobs, banisters, even to tie napkins.

Creating great tables truly welcomes guests. Make sure to coordinate tablecloths, napkins, candleholders and centerpieces. You can fi nd a colorful assortment of each online at www.bedbathandbeyond.com. Don’t be afraid to think creatively!

You can also add fl air by using glasses in untraditional ways. A set of Libbey Mini Wine Tasting Glasses can double as décor when fi lled with candies, nuts and dried fruit. Or use shot glasses for shrimp cocktail.

Remember, bigger isn’t always better for holiday parties.
