East Boston is located to the northeast ofDowntown across Boston Harbor. Although veryclose to Downtown, it is linked to it only by tunneland ferryboat. East Boston has long been at theforefront of transportation in Boston, New England, and the world. Once home to well known ship-builders Donald McKay and Samuel Hall, EastBoston was the major site for the construction ofclipper ships in the mid-19th century. These shipswere used for trade and their speedy travel provid-ed greater opportunities for worldwide commerce.
In 1905, a subway tunnel to downtown opened, andwas one of the earliest rail tunnels anywhere to bebuilt beneath water. Today, Logan Airport occupiesa significant portion of land in East Boston bring-ing cars, noise and jobs to East Boston. Its proxim-ity to the Downtown core is uncommon for airportsnationwide, and this continues to be a boon and aburden for East Boston and the rest of the city.
Route 1A is a limited-access expressway runningthrough the center of the neighborhood, connectingthe Callahan and Sumner Tunnels, the Airport, andthe North Shore. Meridian and Chelsea Streets arethe only links across the Chelsea Creek. SaratogaStreet is the only link to Winthrop to the east andBennington Street is a major link to Revere.

Once a major shipping port of call, East Bostonwas always an early entry point for immigrants intoBoston and beyond. These waves of immigrationhave left their mark in East Boston and its distinc-tive neighborhoods and strong heritage remain astabilizing factor even today. The Census counted38,413 people in East Boston in 2000, a 17%increase over 1990, making Eastie the fastest grow-ing neighborhood in the city in the 1990s. Themajor business districts are along Meridian Streetand Bennington Street, though Logan Airport isclearly the largest employment generator in EastBoston.Employment Areas in East BostonMaverick/Central Squares 2,100Day Square/Bennington 900Chelsea Creek 1,800Harborfront 1,200Logan Airport 16,400Orient Heights/Suffolk Downs 1,300Other 600TOTAL JOBS 24,300

In 1990, 42% of East Boston households did notown a motor vehicle. Walking or bicycling accountsfor 70% of trips within the neighborhood, but noneof the trips headed elsewhere. More than 70% oftrips headed for the downtown core were by transit, the highest percentage of any Boston neighborhood. The delays and cost of using the tunnels help explainthis very high transit mode share. Trips completelywithin East Boston account for more than half thetotal trips, but 26% of trips are to the InnerCommunities, with 88% of these as auto trips.—————————————————Distribution of Trips and Mode Shares inEast Boston (not including Logan Airport)
