Thank you to all that attended the luncheon last month on June 11th.

Special Thanks to Pauli Engineering for pro-viding us with our table centerpieces for June. For more information about this sponsor please

visit their web site at www.pauliengineering.com. We are looking to still fill a few spots for the remainder of this year. If you are interested in sponsoring please contact Donna Topp at [email protected] or (925)454-8648.

EBCA and I would like extend a big thank you to our June speaker, Kurt Ahlich, PE, of Rimkus Consulting Group. Kurt pre-sented on Foundation Failures and gave some wonderful insight on every day causes, as well as unique causes, for foundation issues and how they play into insurance claims. Again, thank you, Rimkus for helping out with another great speaker.

It is fast upon us, YES! The EBCA’s 12th annual golf tour-nament is back and happening this Friday! Please join us back at Eagle Vines Golf Course in the Napa Valley on Friday July 25th. This year’s theme of “Minute to Win It” is set to be one of our best yet. I am very happy to announce that all of our foursomes are sold out and only a couple sponsorships remain. Please contact Joe Baughman of SRI Environmental, Inc. at [email protected] or co-chair Eric Lewis of CRDN at [email protected] for further details or check out the EBCA web site at www.eastbay-

The East Bay Claims Association welcomed their guest Speaker, Kurt Ahlich, PE, of Rimkus Consulting Group, on June 11th for their Monthly Luncheon Meeting. Mr Ahlich is a licensed Civil Engineer, Engi-neering Contractor, and General Contractor. He clearly has vast knowledge and experi-ence with landslide, soiling subsidence, and retaining wall issues.Mr. Ahlich explained we have problem soils in the Bay Area. Much of it is clay soil, highly weathered and close to the water, silt. Foundation Failure is almost always caused by problem soil, he explained. When the Foundation settles and moves the frame follows. It starts from the ground up causing Interior wall and, ceiling cracks, doors hard to open. One solution he suggested is to build the structure with a void space between founda-tion and soil to give soil a space to expand. Construction related causes for Foundation failure could be: Vegetation (tree roots); using fill soil; drainage; rain; irrigation; downspouts; and plumbing systems.Mr. Ahlich did a great job and answered many questions. The 50/50 Raffle was won by Ken Ridings of Engineering Design. There will be no Luncheon in July because the East Bay Golf Tournament is July 25th at Eagle Vines Golf Course, 580 So. Kelly Rd, Napa. We hope to see you there.

Dancing hamster arrested on insurance fraud chargesLOS ANGELES, Calif. – Le-roy Barnes, 27, of Los Angeles, known as one of the dancing hamsters in Kia commercials, was arrested on insurance fraud charges related to his alleged fraudulent collection of state disability insurance benefits. Barnes is suspected of de-ceiving his doctors about his employ-ment status while he receiving disability benefits. “Fraudulently col-

lecting disability benefits is not only illegal, it disrespects legitimately injured Californians who are unable to work,” said In-surance Commissioner Dave Jones. In June 2010 while employed as a dancer for John Cossette Produc-tions Barnes was struck by a piece of ceiling that fell on him during a sound check. Barnes received state disability insurance benefits from September 2010 to September 2011, totaling more than $51,000. Barnes stated that he was not employed during the year he received state disability insurance. Detectives discovered evidence that Barnes was actually working while collecting disability benefits. While receiving disability benefits, Barnes starred in a Kia car com-mercial playing the role of a dancing hamster. He also performed in a rap group called The Rej3ctz, under the alias MoWii, assisted in

recording the song Cat Daddy, and worked as a backup dancer for Madonna, Kelly Rowland, and Chris Brown under the name Hypnosis.

$270,000 Lamborghini damaged by uninsured tow companyCORONA, Calif.– Michael Bo Goar, 44, and Danielle Goar, 30, of

Corona are facing three charges of auto collision and auto property fraud associated with making false statements to an insurance company for a $292,000 claim for damage to a 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo. “Not purchasing commercial insurance was an unwise decision to achieve an unfair financial gain,” said Com-missioner Dave Jones. “This alleged illegal activity placed other motorists at risk and creates unfair com-petition for other businesses that carry proper insurance coverage.”

The Goars received a contract to tow a 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo and during the move were involved in a collision. Michael and Dan-ielle Goar both provided false statements to their insurance company stating the tow was a personal trip and not part of their towing busi-ness. The Department of Insurance investigation revealed evidence that contradicted the Goar’s statements and proved it was a tow commercial business towing job and therefore would not be covered by their personal auto insurance policy. The suspects did not have a commercial insurance policy associated with their tow business. This case is being prosecuted by the local district attorney’s office. If convicted, the Goars could face up to five years in state prison and a $50,000 fine.

Opening Day afternoon session Monday, August 18th. The total of three day series will take place starting at 4pm Monday, then all day Tuesday and well into Wednesday this year, back at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Sacramento.

“Hitting A Home Run - covering all the bases” is an apropos theme, both in honor of the Baseball “Summer Classic”, and in making the most of a mid-week con-ference experience, offering a chance to get out of the Northern California Summer heat for a time.

A three-tiered, Continuing Education-accredited (pending) program has been established for a series to be remembered. Class schedules and attendee registration are available on the web site at this time: www.ClaimsConference.org.

top of your game. Swing away! Steal a base to get into scoring position. Catch your hotel reservations, too!
