Us humans, as a species, can credit our survival (you know, ever since the age of cave drawings and big hairy men miraculously discovering fire) to a few different attributes, but I’d like to argue for one in particular: travel. Ever since the beginning, one of our defining traits has been our love for expanding outward, searching out new discoveries and exploring new frontiers. Of course, our ancestors had it much harder than we do these days. They had to journey on foot or by horse, and cruise on wooden ships powered by sails and wind with not so nice accommodations (certainly not by our present-day standards).

We’ve got it easy, able to travel halfway around the globe in a matter of hours by airplane. Feats that our ancestors never would have thought possible are commonplace to us.

Jump through time to 1970. An age on the cusp travel greatness, and the year of our beginning. Mildred Roseborough became the founder of Roseborough Travel Agency in 1970, making bookings with nothing more than a rotary phone and card table. Such simple beginnings with nowhere to go but up, and up it went!

Twenty years later, in 1990, MaryWayne Wright, Mildred’s daughter, bought the business from her, keeping the agency in the family. The agency continued to witness the growth of the travel industry. Agents went from booking short cruises on the Big Red Boat to planning Grand Voyages that span the globe. Traveling with tour companies was on the rise.

Another twenty years fly by to 2010. Our very own Amanda, Cathy, and Tiffany bought the business from MaryWayne. They’ve run Roseborough Travel Agency for the last 8 years, their travel spirits alive and thriving. As you will read in Cathy’s article, the business has gone through one more transition, where Cathy is moving and no longer an owner, but very much still a team player of Roseborough Travel.

Through all that time, almost 48 years, the Agency’s ideal has remained the same: to help make travel dreams come true.

The rest, as they say, is history.

From when I was a little girl sitting in front of the tv watching The Mummy on TNT, I have always wanted to go to Egypt. The pyramids, history and papyrus are calling to me, and I finally get to answer that call! From the great pyramids of Giza, to the Temple of Hatshepsut (the thing my mom is most looking forward too), to sailing 3 nights down the Nile River…

For those of you who don’t know who Hatshepsut is, she was one of the 5 women in Ancient Egypt to come to the reign as

Pharaoh, and the temple she commissioned is regarded as one of the greatest Egyptian architectural achievements. Seeing this great piece of architecture in person will be something I’ll be sure to remember forever.

But sailing along the Nile on the Movenpick Lily is going to be the highlight of the trip for me. Being in this amazing country, sailing on an ancient river will make me feel like we are traveling back in time. We still have some ways to go, as the trip isn’t until April of next year, but this gives us time to be excited!

Why do I want to visit Poland and Germany? Why not?! Both are beautiful countries in the heartlands of Central Europe. We’ll see castles and modern cities - full of art and other cultural achievements. Both countries are full of history - some of that history is very tragic but there is so much more that these countries have to offer. The food should be interesting in Poland; I really do want to have a pierogi (that’s meat stuffed dumplings) and to have a real bratwurst in Germany - oh and we cannot forget the strudel!!! The currency exchange rate is very good in Poland - roughly 3.5 zloty to 1 US dollar - and Germany is on the Euro which is .86 to 1 US dollar, so if you’re looking for a cuckoo clock, porcelain or amber which is known as “Baltic Gold” we might be able to find those items for you as we explore some of the wonderful market squares that we will be visiting throughout this unique and different tour of Poland and Germany. Last year my husband celebrated a milestone birthday – I won’t say which one – but just like many people celebrating half a century of life (did you catch that?), he wanted to do something to mark the occasion – what better way than taking a cruise and zip lining over the ocean in Labadee, Haiti?!

We booked a five-day cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas with ports of call to their private resort in Labadee, Haiti and Falmouth, Jamaica.

Because we enjoy relaxing on our trips, we spoiled ourselves with an aft balcony giving us a much larger balcony with fantastic views. Our first port of call was the location of our zip line adventure – Labadee, Haiti. As we docked, the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line was visible against the lush green mountains of Haiti, admittedly a little intimidating at first. I recommend making a reservation for the zip line prior to your sailing to save time. The adventure begins when you and other fellow flyers are fitted with gear, provided instruction which includes a practice run, and then driven by jeep to the launching platform 500 feet above the beach. Groups of five flyers at a time zip over the ocean dropping more than 2,600 feet, traveling 40-50 mph and offering a bird’s eye view of the ocean and island below. The Dragon’s Flight was not an excursion, rather an experience, and I recommend it to anyone planning a sailing to Labadee.

We sailed west to our next port of call, Falmouth, found on the northern coast of Jamaica, East of Montego Bay. Here we immersed ourselves in the local culture by taking a guided tour through the city of Montego Bay. Our guide was informative and fun, providing a lot of history and information about the area and local Patois (Patwah) language. We stopped for a lunch break with time for a self-guided tour, wrapping it all up with a Blue Mountain Coffee tasting at a local outdoor restaurant. We returned to the Port at Falmouth which offers a wide variety of authentic Jamaican foods and souvenir shopping.

We have been on several cruises, and this was one of my favorites because it offered everything we were looking for in a vacation. Whether you are a foodie, adventure seeker, culture enthusiast, celebrating a special occasion, or just looking for some relaxation – I am happy to help you plan a vacation to fit your style and need.

Having just returned from a visit back to England for my Son’s Wedding, I thought I would share with you what else we were able to enjoy and experience whilst there.

After the 8 hour overnight flight I was determined to go and watch my favorite football (soccer) team “Chelsea” play in West London, who had a match that evening, so I had to drag my husband (who supports a rival team) along. And although it finished 0-0, so no goals, to cheer it was worth it to be up close and personal to my idols!

After just a 4 hour sleep we were up bright and early the next day to catch the 6:00am Eurostar train to Paris. We enjoyed a champagne breakfast on board before we arrived at Gare De Nord just over 2 hours later. Upon arrival we purchased a 1-day Metro Pass, which is the easiest and quickest way to get around and visit the sights.

We first went to Allysses, and after venturing up this never ending spiral staircase out of the station, we then discovered there was an elevator next to it! We caught the Funicular to the top by Sacre Coeur and admired the amazing views from there, looking over the whole of Paris.

While walking around the cobbled streets of Montmartre, the Artists Square is a hidden secret gem of the city.

We then traveled to the south side of Paris to the Eiffel Tower and went up to the summit for more spectacular views. We were going to get the “Bateaux Parisien” along the Seine but due to flooding the jetty was under water so we made our way to the Arc De Triomphe instead.

Taking a stroll down the Champs Elysee to Place De La Concorde and stopping for a beer en route was the perfect place to people watch!

As we were short on time we were unable to go inside the Louvre or Notre Dame but managed to get photo shots of us outside. We ended our day in this magical city in the Latin Quarter, and while walking down a side street we found this delightful bistro. For just 30 euros we enjoyed a 3-course meal and a bottle of wine in perfect surroundings.

The following week I had a fun day in London with my 3 year old grandson at “Shrek’s Adventure” and “Sealife” by Westminster Bridge.

I think next time on my visit back home I’ll catch the Eurostar again to Brussels and Bruges, or maybe even EuroDisney!

I can never believe it when a new Explorers Club Issue is due. Time flies when you are having fun! And I have certainly been enjoying life & travel!

Since my last article I have had the most incredible experiences!

September to October 2017, myself and 19 other explorers took a trip of a lifetime to South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. We walked along the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, visited Robben Island, and even saw the most amazing penguins along

Boulder Beach. Then we made our way to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe where many of us walked with lions, took helicopter rides above the falls, or enjoyed an elephant-back safari. A few brave souls (6 of us) even went into Zambia, the border country to Zimbabwe which shares Victoria Falls, and we jumped into Devils Pool at the top of the falls – seriously, google this and you will agree that we were brave!

Just when we thought the trip couldn’t get any better, we made our way to Chobe National Park in Botswana. I cried this park was so lovely! We stayed at a fantastic game lodge in which we had our first sunset cruise, on which we saw hundreds of elephants, hippos, and cape buffalo alongside several antelopes and tons of birds. The African sunset was the most amazing — I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Who could have ever thought our following 3 game drives would blow the most amazing sunset safari cruise out of the water? Well it did! Anyone I speak to I tell them that I left a piece of my heart in Africa… and I will forever want to go back again and again to recreate this amazing experience.

Though I know I will never be able to recreate this trip, I will tell you it holds the title of my best trip ever. I have to honestly say, I believe it was not only the destination, but the group of people who went on this adventure were such an amazing group of people. I believe they made the trip even more amazing than the destination already was because we all jived, got along amazingly, and were quite an adventurous sort. Want to know more? Give me a call and I’ll talk your ear off, or read my blog on the website: roseboroughtravel.com/blog

After Africa came our Annual Thanksgiving Cruise onboard the Celebrity Equinox with 76 Roseborough Explorers. This trip is always great fun! Celebrity was giving out great perks for booking, like drink packages, shipboard credit, and wi-fi, so our people were quite happy with the amenities. And all-in-all it is a wonderful way to spend the Thanksgiving holiday! My favorite experience on this cruise was a tie: it’s between cave tubing in Belize and a Maya Cove Beach stay at a private resort while we were in Labadee, Hati. It was actually a wildlife refuge and beach resort that was beautiful, educational, and not overflowing with people—so it was quite relaxing.

To follow Thanksgiving, I went on the Christmas bus trip with 36 others. This is always a great adventure filled with wonderful shows, city tours, and spectacular Christmas lights. It even snowed while we were traveling… And of course we had to have a snowball fight! Just one more example of how the group really makes for an amazing experience.

What’s next for me? Well I will be going to Kenya this month to learn all about this amazing country and then we will be planning another group to visit Africa – this time East Africa for the great migration phenomenon.

We also have a wonderful small group going on a Mekong River Cruise in April. Then the best Alaskan adventure you could dream of in May, and a fantastic trip to Spain in September. Want to go somewhere cool? Join the group! We always have a great time and the explorers interchange depending on the trip. I would love for you to join me on an upcoming adventure!12

SKIATHOS, GREECE

I have always had the travel bug - my dad was in the Coast Guard so as a family we moved around quite often - we lived in Michigan, Key West, San Juan Puerto Rico, Delaware and Maine before I finally planted my roots in the DeLand/Orange City Area. I cannot believe I have been here for over 30 years now.

I started at Roseborough Travel 19 years ago and boy does the time go by fast. I was basically pretty green but Mary Wayne Wright took a chance and offered me a heck of an opportunity to grow as an agent. I began my travel career by planning three-night cruises on the Big Red Boat and issuing airline tickets in office. I pretty much begged my family and friends to let me book their travel needs. But I have grown in my career, and through my years at Roseborough Travel I’ve made countless friends, and this goes beyond travel. This “family” has been a major part of my personal life – they’ve seen my children grow, graduate, and get married. Being part of this “family” I’ve been given so many opportunities to explore and introduce others to the joy of travel, whether it’s a cruise to the Caribbean, seeing Ireland for the first time, throwing coins into the Trivi Fountain in Rome, or visiting the great land of Alaska.

What’s next on my list? I have two REALLY big “adventures.” I’m very excited about my upcoming trip to Poland and East Germany – this trip is really a bucket list tour for me. I still have space left and would love to have you join me on this trip. But it will be a bittersweet trip for me for many reasons, even more than just the destination alone. This is my first time sharing with our beloved clients… but this will be the last trip that I will be escorting from Roseborough Travel. I would like my last group trip to be an amazing one with my travel family.

I am proud to share with you, our Explorers Club, that I will be relocating to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in October. Don’t worry, I will be still part of the Roseborough Team, just working from Delaware. This move has long been a dream of mine, to be able to live back up north to enjoy the cooler weather and bike rides to the beach. The next chapter of my life is just around the corner and I am so happy.

For those of you (family, clients, and “work wives”) who have been with me through the last 19 years: Thank you! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have grown into the agent I am today. Thank you for your love, support, and friendship over the years.

impressing travelers ever since. Snorkel with turtles, marvel at manta rays and

marine iguanas, and witness the behaviour of flamingos, penguins,

pelicans, and flightless cormorants. You’ll also walk across otherworldly lava fields,

The Great Land of Alaska is one for bucket lists and live-it lists for all. Most visitors plan their first trip to Alaska thinking they will never go back, but actually, it is one of the most repeated destinations in the travel industry. Wonder why?

The pure beauty, for one. The mountains alone are magnificent. Denali herself is a sight for sore eyes. She is only fully visible when the clouds rise above her 20,310 feet. If you wanted to climb Mount McKinley aka Denali, it would take 2-3 weeks, if you did not get stuck due to bad weather. So, take the less aggressive path and stay at any one of the amazing Denali National Parks Resorts – many of the cruise lines have their own resorts with the most breathtaking views of the mountain. Did you know only 20% of the people who visit Denali actually see her in all her glory? IF you are one of the lucky ones to see a fog-free Denali, be sure to snap a picture and get a t-shirt claiming you made it into the 20% club.

Glaciers are the next most amazing thing to see in Alaska, literally awe-inspiring. Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America at a whopping 76 miles long, and it reaches depths of 1200 feet. Hubbard Glacier has been nicknamed the Galloping glacier because of how quickly it is moving toward the gulf. When the glacier makes rapid advancements it will begin to calve. Calving is also known as silent thunder because of how dramatic the chunks of ice break off at the edge of the glacier. It is simply an amazing thing to witness.

Glacier Bay is a UNESCO world heritage site and is a whole national park of glaciers you can sail through. Whereas Hubbard is one massive glacier (the largest), Glacier Bay is comprised of many smaller glaciers. You can’t really go wrong, as long as you see a glacier while in Alaska.

When explorers begin to plan a trip to Alaska, they are typically going for two things: the glaciers and the wildlife. Who needs a zoo when you can get up close and personal to brown bears snatching up salmon when they run, moose walking through the park, caribou, gray wolves, rabbits, and more… and that’s just on land. Take a sea journey and see whales a plenty, bald eagles, porpoises playing on the banks and so much more.

On the search for wildlife? Be sure to check off the Big 5! One of the biggest thrills of visiting Denali National Park is seeking out the Big 5: moose, grizzly bear, dall sheep, caribou, and wolves.

So what are you waiting for? Lets go North To Alaska!

I have the amazing opportunity to plan several different adventures for my clients each and every week. I love it because I get to go on adventure every day through these plans. It often feels like I’m traveling around the world with my Explorers because of the adventures I plan.

The clients I would like to share with you in this Explorers Club actually have some great history with Roseborough Travel. And since this edition is about history, who better to write about than MaryWayne Wright, the previous owner of Roseborough Travel. MaryWayne’s mom, Mildred Roseborough was the founder of Roseborough Travel Agency in 1970. MaryWayne then took the family business over and ran it for 20 years. In 2010, she sold

the business to myself and my business partners. The most recent trip I had the pleasure of planning was her most recent trip to Chile and Argentina.

She and her husband, George, began their journey in Santiago the day before the cruise to enjoy a little free time and get acclimated before they embarked on the Celebrity Infinity. The voyage was 14 days — they cruised the Chilean Fjords and the Strait of Magellan. What a trip that must have been! They stopped at some amazing ports in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay before ending their voyage in Buenos Aires. It was a wonderful adventure with some awe-inspiring destinations. They absolutely fell in LOVE with Celebrity. The ship and its service were so amazing that they’ve already booked to explore the Galapagos next year aboard the Celebrity Xpedition! How exciting!

MaryWayne may have retired in August of 2010, but she hasn’t stopped traveling. It’s in her soul!

Thank you for letting me make your travel dreams come true! I love every minute of it.
