Leveraging Time, Talent & TreasureThis past year, our club has done an amazing job of utilizing our limited resources to accomplish much locally and internationally.  We’ve been able to generate about $170,000 in funds from a variety of sources, including about $9,000 from our SB Sunrise Charitable Foundation and Club funds.  Where did the other $161,000 come from?  It came from our ability to tap into a number of other sources outside the club.  Major sources of these funds include: Matching Grants from The Rotary Foundation; District Designated Funds from our and other Rotary Districts; contributions from other Rotary clubs; District Simplified and Travel Grants; and corporations such as CITRIX.

What have we or will we be able to accomplish once all these funds have been expended?  Let me share with you some of our successes and the champions who helped make it happen:

• 1,650 wheelchairs to the needy in India and Bangladesh (E. Russell Smith)

• SEE International eye surgeries for 39 individuals in Celaya, Mexico (Luz Maria Ortiz-Smith and Mark Reinhardt)

• Kitchen equipment at the City of the Children Orphanage in Salamanca, Mexico (Janet Napier and Mark Reinhardt)

• Dictionaries for 750 Santa Barbara area 3rd graders (Dennis Johns and Mark Reinhardt)

• Three water wells and 4 fish farming ponds at Igbere Secondary School in Nigeria (Bill Boyd and Liz Werhane)

• New walk-in freezer and kitchen equipment at Camp Whittier in the Santa Ynez Valley (Janet Napier and David Velarde)

• Upgraded water tank at APAE center for the disabled in Maringa, Brazil (Colin Stephens)

• New furniture at the CEMIC facility for the handicapped in Cianorte, Brazil (Colin Stephens)

• Educational scholarships for disadvantaged youth in Tecate, Mexico (Ed Fleming and Bill Abel)

These examples represent the various ways our club has been successful in marshaling the help of other Rotarians and non-Rotarians to achieve so much this year. My heartfelt thanks go to International Service Committee Chair, Connard Hogan, the Community Service Chair, David Velarde, and to the hard working members of their committees for their dedication and support this year.  We thank also our club members who gave generously to our SB Sunrise Foundation and those who worked on our fund-raising projects.  It’s been a productive year!

• Luz Maria Ortiz-Smith was recently elected to represent District 5240 at the next Rotary International Council on Legislation in 2013.

• Our recent challenge grant fundraising effort has raised about $4,845 for the Polio Plus campaign. Thanks to Judith McCaffrey for shepherding this effort in honor of Dr. Otto Austel. Contributors will receive a special Otto Austel commemorative pin.

• Mark Reinhardt reports that on his recent visit to the City of the Children Orphanage, the children were so excited to see the photo-journal of their visit to Santa Barbara last July. Thanks to Sandy Grasso-Boyd for preparing this beautiful book.

• Gary Jensen kicked off an effort to raise funds for victims of the recent tornado in Joplin, Missouri. Funds will be distributed to a local Rotary Club Foundation in Joplin. Please make checks to the Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation, noting Joplin disaster relief.

International ServiceSunrise Rotarian Mark Reinhardt Visit to our Friends and Projects in Mexico

I arrived in Leon with the 92 pounds of supplies but was stopped at customs when they x-rayed the bags and would not let them pass. However the ladies from the Nat-Tha-Hi Rotary club in Celaya came to the rescue and they finally allowed all of the supplies to pass through.

Cuidad de los Ninos

I arrived at the Cuidad de los Niños (CdlN) on Tuesday, when it happened to be Mother’s Day in Mexico. It was a nice surprise. All of the children were there, as well as the little ones too, to celebrate. We had lunch and a cake and then the children put on a skit about a dysfunctional family that fell apart but was fortunately saved by Jesus who arrived just in time.. See photos.

I met with Padre Pedro for a while. He was relieved to get the news that it was fine to sell the bus, and when I explained to him the problem with the shoe glue, he quickly dropped the issue of trying to get them to the CdlN.

I also had brought my copy of the photo-journal that Sandy had put together for the children’s choir and mariachi band’s visit to SB last July. I was surprised that neither the children nor Padre Pedro had seen it although I thought he had been mailed a few copies. At any rate, he was overjoyed to see it. He viewed every page and couldn’t say enough about it. I also shared it with many of the children, who were also engrossed in it. I gave him my copy, and hope we can send him more copies. He thinks they will go far in helping them get support from government and other organizations. See photos

Esteban (the guy in the photo with Marlen) helped me locate the kitchen equipment that was purchased as exactly as was corresponded to us.

I went with Vanessa and Veronica (both had been in SB on the last tour) to buy shoes for the little children in the convent. We found shoes but could not find a good exchange rate, so I donated $300 US to the Mother Superior to purchase the for shoes and who could get a better deal than I.

Celaya and the Eye Clinic  In Celaya I had a fine stay with Rosita and Carlos. Both are doing really well and are awesome hosts. They send their regards to all of their friends up here. One evening I strolled around town with Rosita, her daughter Monserat, and Monse’s two girls. It was a nice evening with many families out. Rosita asked me to point out to my Rotarian friends in California that it is very safe there in Celaya (and most of Mexico) and that she hopes that people will come down to visit. 

The clinic was good. They had 40 patients screened and ready for cataract surgery. Of that, I believe they operated on 39 with the exception of one poor girl of about 25 who had diabetes and was rejected because of unbalanced blood sugar. Dr. Jeff Rutgard was his usual awesome self, conducting many of the surgeries.

Overall my time with the CdlN and in Celaya was wonderful and I was able to make some much better contacts to help in the future Saludos,Mark

Great News from The Rotary Foundation!

Our club has received word from The Rotary Foundation that two important Matching grant projects have been approved. One project will provide a walk-in-freezer and kitchen equipment at Camp Whittier. The other will result in the construction of 3 water wells and 4 fish farming ponds at a school in Nigeria. Construction of projects will take place in the next Rotary year.

 Gates says eradicating polio is top priority

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is welcomed to the stage by Robert S. Scott, International PolioPlus Committee Chair, on 24 May.

Speaking during the third plenary session of the RI Convention in New Orleans to a packed house, Bill Gates praised Rotary for its continued success in the effort to eradicate polio. “Your work has brought us so far,” he said. “I’m so proud to be a partner in the work that Rotary has been doing to eradicate polio.”He noted that only one case of polio has been reported so far this year in India. “India is approaching zero cases,” he said. “None of this would have been remotely achievable had it not been for Rotary. We would not be where we are without you. Nor can we get to where we’re going without you.”While some may have been disappointed that Gates did not offer Rotary any additional funds, what hesaid in New Orleans was far more important. He noted that he and his wife Melinda have made eradicating polio the top priority of their foundation. But with the world now on the threshold of polio eradication, he said the hard work really begins.“Polio eradication has been our single biggest investment in recent years, as far as innovation and creativity. The last one percent will be the longest and hardest 1 percent,” he said. “It will require more work & more commitment than ever before. Without the redoubled effort of everyone in this room, and your fellow Rotarians around the world, we will not succeed. Redoubling is crucial to ending polio.”Gates said he plans to continue to work with Rotary leadership to keep polio front and center in the public eye. “You have helped so many people understand that we are this close. I challenge you to make your voices louder.”Gates is not capping his support for ending polio, and neither is Rotary. We are not in the fight—up to a given dollar amount. We are in it until polio has been wiped out from the face of the earth. That has been our promise to the children of the world — and Gates‟ promise as well.

With  so  many  club  acOviOes,  President  Bill  had  a  hard  Ome  making  his  selecOon  for  Rotarian  of  the  Month  so  he  selected  five!  Andrew  Chung,  Steve  Kally  and  Tim  Marme  were  honored  for  their  hard  work  on  the  Golf  Tournament;  Mark  Reinhardt  for  his  efforts  with  two  Elings  Park  Work  Days,  DicOonary  Project,  and  leading  the  SEE  InternaOonal/City  of  the  Children  visit  to  Celaya  and  Salamanca,  Mexico;  and  Judith  McCaffrey  for  championing  the  PolioPlus  campaign  in  memory  of  OHo  Austel.  

David  Velarde  presented  the  El  Puente  Student  of  the  Month  award  for  May  to  Daniel  Sotelo  for  his  outstanding  accomplishments.  His  teacher,  Michael  Riley  noted  Daniel  is  a  highly-­‐driven  student  who  has  excelled  in  computer  graphics  and  wriOng.  Daniel  hopes  to  pursue  his  higher  educaOon  in  a  digital  arts  program.  

Club  Announcements:David  Velarde  extended  a  request  from  the  Goleta  Rotary  Clubs  for  volunteers  at  the  Annual  Goleta  Fireworks  Event  at  Girsh  Park  (two  shi^s:  3:30-­‐6:45  or  6:30-­‐10:00).  He  noted  several  Goleta  NoonOme  Rotarians  kindly  volunteered  at  our  Fiddlers  FesOval  and  it  would  be  good  for  us  to  reciprocate.  Contact  Connie  Burns  (connieburns12@aol.com  or  967-­‐6166)  if  you  can  help.  

David  asked  club  members  to  think  about  how  they  wished  to  serve  next  Rotary  year  and  circulated  a  commiHee  sign  up  sheet.  The  commiHee  chairs  will  contact  members  for  more  informaOon.  If  the  sheet  doesn’t  get  around  to  everyone,  David  will  set  up  an  online  Google  doc.

Program:  Marc  Fleischman  on  Industrial  Mining

Marc  Fleischman,  now  reOred  from  World  Minerals  an  industrial  minerals  company  located  in  Lompoc,  shared  with  club  members  of  his  business  experience  while  traveling  to  China  in  the  1990s.  He  said  business  in  China  is  moOvated  differently.  They  were  focused  more  on  employing  people  rather  than  making  money  therefore  automaOon  and  machinery  was  frowned  upon.  The  concept  of  signing  documents  with  a  signature  had  no  meaning.  The  language  is  so  symbolic  that  communicaOon  was  o^en  difficult.  The  culture  lent  itself  to  a  degree  of  socializing  prior  to  any  business  taking  place.  His  company  produced  diatomaceous  earth,  used  in  filtering  beer,  wine  and  pharmaceuOcals,  and  perlite,  another  filtering  aid.
