Dealing with DilemmasThese past few weeks have been extremely difficult ones to fathom. On March 11 a devastating 9.0 earthquake hit eastern Japan, followed by an unbelievable tsunami. Additionally, Japan was faced with dealing with a potentially cataclysmic nuclear accident. In Libya, people were being slaughtered by a mindless dictator who decided to wreak havoc on his people. Eventually, following a UN mandate, countries stepped in to help avert a humanitarian disaster.

Last weekend as I was walking Barley in Berkeley on a cold, rainy morning, I came upon an interesting post on a community bulletin board: “The wise reject what they think, not what they see.” On arriving home I was struck by a Facebook post from an anti-war friend whose words surprised me: “What do we do as Gaddafi murders his own people? Stand by and wring our hands? What do we do as Pol Pot murders his own people? Stand by and wring our hands? This is one of those few cases in which I think military action is

necessary. And I mourn the loss of life on both sides. It is a terrible situation with no answer.” What do these two disparate sets of words have in common? What do they say to us as Rotarians, when we are faced with unconscionable dilemmas?

I would suggest that as Rotarians, we should always keep our eyes open to those situations which call us to action. Whether it is responding to natural disasters or human caused ones, we need to be ready to act, as best we can. The cornerstone of every Rotarian is and must be “Service Above Self ”. My deepest hope of myself personally, when I see situations of human suffering, is to ask myself “How can I help?” My question to fellow Rotarians is: “How are you called?”

In  humility,

President  Bill

Upcoming Events

Rotary at Work Day IISaturday, April 30, 2011 - Eling’s Park the Sequel

8am to 3pm This April 30th our club, along with other local clubs and Rotaractors that would like to join us is planning a day of community service at our Eling’s park picnic area. We had a similar event this February 19, which some of you will remember as a bit soggy and muddy. But, we got a lot done and had fun. We would like to complete the unfinished work this time and if we get enough support, we should be able to upgrade the area significantly in a day. We will be doing more weeding, spreading mulch, completing the stone borders and improving the drainage pathways. While the work day will be from 8am to 3pm, you can stay longer or just spend 3-4 hours. Shovels, wheelbarrows and garden carts will be our main tools. Important details (like what kind of good food and drink will be there) to come. Mark Reinhardt

The rendezvous spot is the Mulligan’s Cafe at the Public Golf Course on March 29,2011. Come for good fellowship and fun! (also a makeup for missing a meeting)

Rotary International News about Japan

How Rotarians are Responding The Rotary Japan Disaster Recovery Fund has raised more than US$500,000 as of 25 March.

In response to the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March, The Rotary Foundation has established the Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund, which will support long-term recovery projects in affected areas.Rotarians and non-Rotarians can donate online. Clubs and districts can contribute cash and District Designated Fund (DDF) allocations to the fund. The deadline for contributing to the fund is 31 December 2011.The 9.0-magnitude quake, Japan's largest in history, and the tsunami that followed it caused widespread devastation, paralyzing much of the northern coast. More than 10,000 people have been killed, and thousands are missing. Millions have been left without clean water or power, and at least 550,000 people have been forced from their homes.A series of explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, 140 miles northeast of Tokyo, damaged reactors and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands. The Japanese government is working to contain the situation. Damage from the earthquake and tsunami is estimated at US$170 billion.RI President-nominee Sakuji Tanaka, of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, was in Lisbon, Portugal, on Rotary business during the disasters. He was able to reach his wife, Kyoko, on the phone to confirm her safety."She said it was the most horrifying experience she'd ever had," says Tanaka. "The northern region of Japan is still in chaos. We are unsure when this chaos will end or when things will get better. However, I am most thankful to know that Rotarians around the world care for us."Japanese RI directors Masaomi Kondo and Masahiro Kuroda, as well as staff at Rotary International's Japan office, are confirmed to be safe.Rotary clubs and districts worldwide are mobilizing efforts to bring urgently needed aid to victims."I've received many messages from Rotarians all over the world," says Noriko Futagami, the Public Image Resource Group coordinator for Zone 2. "I also have reports that Rotary clubs have begun to start planning projects for immediate help. Unfortunately, there are many Rotarians and families who haven't been able to be contacted. Rotarians in Japan worry for their safety."

Group Study Exchange team safeRotarian Robert Blackburn was leading a Group Study Exchange team in Japan when the earthquake struck. The five team members from Illinois, USA, were in a hotel in Tokyo, getting ready for a farewell dinner with their hosts."It was our last night in Japan. I felt the whole building shake," says Blackburn, a member of the Rotary Club of Westmont. "It was not just a mild tremor. My hotel room was shaking from side to side. It felt like forever. I have never been so scared in my life."Blackburn says the earthquake lasted at least two minutes. He used a laundry cart outside his hotel room for protection. After the tremors stopped, he walked 18 floors down to the lobby, where the rest of the team congregated."The airport was temporarily closed, so I told everyone on our team that we might have to be here for a day or two longer," he says. "Thankfully, the airport reopened. Our hosts were incredible and were able to get us to the airport on time for our flight."Tanaka says he is grateful for the warm support of Rotarians worldwide.

"The great thing about Rotarians is that we share everything, including each other's joy and sadness. They have the ability to put themselves in the position of others and act to help," says Tanaka. "Despite the unthinkable hardship we're experiencing now, the people of Japan will not give up on efforts to rebuild their communities."Learn more about how to contribute to the Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund established by The Rotary Foundation. Biography of David Velarde

Submitted by David Velarde

About six years ago I gave my craft talk. Some in attendance are still members, others were not present for that occasion. Now that I have the presidency in sight, I have been asked to give a bio of myself. If you remember my craft talk, you can stop reading this now.

As I believe everyone knows, I am married to Michelle. We have been that way since 2000. She works at Safe Laboratories, an automotive safety research and test facility and expert witnesses for liability cases. She has been there for just over a year and loves the job. We have not spawned any offspring but are the keepers of a dog(Chloe) and a cat(Maceo). We love animals and rescued both. Chloe came with her name and Maceo is named after the Jane’s Addiction song My Cat’s Name is Maceo. After three years or so living in Long Beach, we relocated to København, Denmark (Copenhagen) to help with Michelle’s father’s airline software company. We got married just before leaving. In fact we emptied our house, sold some stuff, stored some stuff, shipped some stuff, sold one car, crashed one car (ok, that was me) and got married all in about a two week time span.  We lived in Denmark for two years. We lived 25 kilometers outside of Copenhagen in Hillerød across the street from Frederiksborg Slot, one of the most beautiful 16th century castles you will ever see. After September of 2011, the airline industry came to a screeching halt and we decided to return to Yankee soil. We moved back to Santa Barbara in 2002 and have been here since.

While not born in Santa Barbara, I have lived here most of my life and both my parents grew up here. In fact, my Grandmother, my Mother and my sister and I, all attended Goleta Union School, now known as the Goleta Community Center. I attended grammar, Jr. High and High School here in SB with the exception of a year in Glendale and four years in Houston, Texas. After graduation from San Marcos High, I attended SBCC for five glorious years. Yes, you can attend SBCC for five years but you have to take a lot of ceramics and volleyball. Just mix in a little physics and calculus and you can then transfer to Cal Poly SLO and study Mechanical Engineering. Seemed like a good course so I took it.

I spend my free time enjoying a number of activities. I like riding road and mountain bikes, have done many centuries (100 mile bike rides) and even rode from San Francisco to Los Angeles on a bike. I love to snowboard but do not partake as much as I would like. Same goes for camping. I like collecting and listening to music as well as playing music on guitar and ukulele. I enjoy food, both cooking and eating. And as most know, I am kind of a coffee freak.

After college I took a job testing rocket engines, one of the things that actually takes a rocket scientist to do. After five years of blowing things up and sniffing monomethylhydrazine (MMH), I was liberated to go work with toys. For the next six years I ran the quality and safety test

laboratory at the Mattel Toys corporate headquarters in El Segundo. In Denmark I worked on an aircraft maintenance scheduling software for my father in law. I now work for a small manufacturing company started by longtime Rotarian Robert Hansen of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara. We make cryogenic products for cooling infrared detectors, spectroscopy and other laboratory applications. I am product manager and quality assurance manager.

You may have already guessed that it was Robert Hansen that suggested I join Rotary. However, it was not my first exposure to Rotary. A former girlfriend went on a GSE to Tasmania. She first described the sponsoring Rotary Club as a group of old business-men that meet for lunch. Even then Rotary was not very good at self promotion.  Bob introduced me to E. Russell Smith who proposed me for membership in 2004. I joined in 2005. I have served on the Club Board for Scott Burns, Dennis Johns and Bill Boyd as Vocational, New Generations and Community Service. I am currently in my second of three years on the club Foundation Board.

So that is probably more about me than you expected to know. And in about 16 months, you will have to endure me at the podium for your 2012-13 Rotary year. Are we ready for that ride?

Everything you Ever Wanted to Know about our President Elect Nominee for 2012-13

Sunrise Rotary News

Sunrisers Make Music

There is a group of fellow Sunrise Rotarians that get together to play ukuleles, a guitar and the occasional acoustic bass. This group has been making music together since 2007, when a handful of Rotarians started by taking an ukulele class at SBCC Adult Education from a Hawaiian ukulele master. After a few classes, they thought it would be fun to play some Christmas songs for the club holiday party. The holiday repertoire consisted of five or six songs, all in the ukulele friendly key of C. The list of holiday songs has now grown to around 15.

The gathering branched out from Christmas song practice to meeting every week and playing other songs. Recently, the group condensed the list of songs down to 21 numbers in various keys. And no, they do not play Tiny Bubbles nor do they play Tiptoe Through The Tulips.

They have played at the last four Salvation Army Bell Ringing sessions to rave reviews. For the first time this past holiday season, the group went to Vista del Monte retirement center to play holiday songs for the residents. They are honing their skills to entertain at other facilities in the community.

This is an open invitation to Sunrisers and non-Sunrisers to join in the fun. All are welcome to come join! You do not have to be an experienced musician to join in the fun. You can learn by doing. You don’t even have to play the ukulele. Bring any instrument that fits in or come and just sing your heart out.

Weekly practice is on Monday evening. If you are interested in joining, just ask any of the guys in the picture below to put you on the email list.
