Bob Skelty, your MLAReports from the LegislatureW

As summer approaches, the thoughts of nany of us turn to outdoor recreation and

holidays. Though tourism is a year-round activity in British Columbia, and now our

third largest industry, sumner brings peak usage of our tourist facilities by British

Col-unbians and visitors alike. Most of us recognize that tourism and recreation are

important both to the quality of life of residentsr ond to the economic health of our

province. And all of us are aware of the sad neglect of these areas by the Socred

government.

Unbelievably, this government, after nearly ten years in office, stil l has no

conprehensive plan for tourism development. The NDP has called for the establishnent

of a tourisn developnent fund. This fund would have as its objectives:

creating jobs in planning, construction and upgrading of tourist facilities;

achieving permanent enplolanent in the operation and maintenance of these

fac i l i t ies ;

stimulating permanent enploynent in related accommodation, travel and

hospital i ty services.

tforking in consultatlon wlth the tourlsm lndustry and the publlc, the government

make sure that new Jobs rill be created in all regions of, the provlnce.

Instead' the Socreds have applied their nega-proJect Etrategy to tourl.sn. fhey haveprovided nassive public eubsldies to a few very large proJects. ecpo ean attract

Jobs to 8.C.1 but lastlng begefits for all British Qetrrnhlgls Gan only cme frm

planning for a permanent and stable tourlsn lndustry beyond 1986.

Britlsh Columbia once had the nost advanced Bysten of parks ln North Arnerica. One

that we could all be proud of. One that preserved our natural herltage and at the

same time provlded great econonic beneflts.

Instead of expanding, developlng, and pronotlng this system, the Socreds have

attacked it with thelr restraint pollcles. Budgets and Etaff have been cut. User

fees are proliferating and standards sllpplng. Safer well-naintained parks ehould be

advertieed inside and outside British Columbta, and the touriEt dollars brought lnto

the econony would far outweigh the inltial expenditures.

We in the IIDP are comrltted to the preaervation of our natural herltage and the

creation of new employment through develolment of the full trntentlal of ttre tourism

industry in British Colunbia.
