E12 & MERIT SCHOTARSHIP APPLICATION WORKSHOP
T. ELzOther than your regular schoolwork, consider activities you have been involved in, or
achievements you have made, which are meaningfulto you. These could be sports,
cultural, community or school leadership activities. Select the one which best reflects you
and describe why you undertook this activity, what you learned from it, and how it may
be relevant to your future.
Throughout my senior year I have played in a girls AFL team. This is significant to me because of the
movement away from conventional activities. Besides my love for watching professional AFL, I
chose this sport because of the physical intensity and fitness level required. By playing in the girls'
league I learned about my personal determination, physical capabilities and importance of
teamwork. These are qualities I consider significant to future work and studies because of their
relevance to everyday life. Attending regular training sessions and arriving early to games helped to
develop self-discipline, which is essential for a good work ethic in later life.

2. EtzWhat would you consider your three best academic achievernents? Of these, select the
one of which you are most proud and describe why it is important to you, describing the
challenges you faced and how you overcame them.
Three academic achievements that I am most proud of include being presented with four academic
achievement awards and a principals Award at our Mid Course Academic Achievement Ceremony.
Another academic achievement is for obtaining the highest trial rinarks in 3 out of my 5 subjects
(pDHpE, Maths and Studies of Religion) and for being placed in tlre top 5 ranks for all my elected
HSC subjects at the conclusion ofthe Stage 5 courses.
Being placed in the top 5 for each of my HSC subjects is my proudest achievement as it is a
testament to my sustained study regime and the effort that I have invested in all my subjects,
including my diligence in maintaining my set study timetable, my ability to submit draft assessments
to 6llow me to refine and improve on the quality of my written work and attending early morning
tutorials. This has shown that through perseverance and hard work, I was able to obtain the goals
that I was wanting to achieve academically.

3.EL2Tell us why you want to study the course you have chosen (and include any experience
you have have had that relates to this course). Why is your interest in this area, and what
do you hope to achieve from studying this course?
My goal is to eventually become a member of the NSW teaching service. I have grown to love the
study of English and realise just how important it is to have good literacy and communication skills.
English is a much unloved subject. When talking to students at school about their favourite subjects
it is never English. lt is quite heartbreaking to see young people struggle with even basic reading
and writing skills and to see how marginalised they become because of the insecurity and
inadequacy they feel because of this. Education is only one career path this degree will allow me to
follow. There are many others such as consultancy, working with government departments or
public relations which are of a particular interest to me. There could be opportunities for me to
work with lndigenous agencies and to continue the work of breaking down barriers for lndigenous
people. Mostly the B. Arts at Sydney University will be a challenge and the first step for me to
achieve the goals I have set for myself.
