Northern Community and School Recreation Program (NCSRCP)… (continued)

    Summer Considerations for NC&SRCP Sites

Summer is just around the corner and will be here before you know it! Key things to consider if you are involved in the NC&SRCP in your community:

    Programs:

Summer programs should be happening at the school and other key recreation facilities in the community over the summer months. Those CSRCs who

have accumulated vacation time may be taking holidays according to the policies and the direction of their employer – but overall, the activities and

programs should be stronger than ever over the summer.

Supervision, Facility & Program Budget Access:

The school year wraps up for the summer, but the NC&SRCP is in full swing!!! This program requires that CSRCs have a direct supervisor and access

to the school (facility and equipment) all year long. Please ensure provisions are made to ensure that CSRCs continue to be supervised and have access

to the school, equipment and program budgets during the summer months.

    Budget:

The 2015-16 NC&SRCP program year ends August 31st. Funds not expended by this date must be returned to the Northern Sport, Culture and

Recreation District. Please make sure you know what dollars are available to be spent and ensure the expenditures adhere to the program expenditure

    guidelines.

    End of Year Checklist…

Has the 2016-17 Annual Program Plan been developed and submitted? (Due May 30, 2016)

Has the 2016-17 Annual Self Evaluation been submitted? (Due May 31, 2016)

Are the Participant Statistics for programs facilitated by the CSRC updated and entered using the online APPS tool?

Have you evaluated programs using the HIGH FIVE QUEST 2 evaluation process? (3 Due August 31st)

Do you and your Steering Committee know what dollars are remaining in the NC&SRCP Site Grant to be spent by August 31, 2016?

Do you know how to access the dollars for program expenditures leading up to August 31, 2016? (August 31st is the last day of this program year, any

funds not spent by this date must be returned to the NSCRD)

Do you have an active Steering Committee - Have you had a Steering Committee Meeting in the past two months?

Have you submitted a Steering Committee Activity Form from your meetings?

Do you know who will be supervising throughout the summer?

Do you have access to the school over the summer holidays?

Northern Community and School Recreation Program (NCSRCP)… (continued)

    Steering Committee Development

The NSCRD is available to facilitate and assist communities at whatever stage of development the Steering Committee may be. This may include, but is not

limited to: facilitated workshops & meetings; planning & brainstorming sessions; working through tools & templates; sharing of samples & best practices; action

plan creation; access to training opportunities; evaluation; etc. A functioning Steering Committee is a condition of funding for the NC&SRCP grant – please

contact NSCRD staff for further information on supports available to your committee.

    SHARE OUR PLAY TOOLKIT

NADA is pleased to share this toolkit developed by Recreation Nova Scotia with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada and Nova Scotia Health and

Wellness. The Share Our Play Tool Kit provides a collection of traditional aboriginal games, activities, crafts, art projects, recipes and other information to help

support frontline sport and recreation leaders in their work with children. The goal of the Tool Kit is to provide leaders and coaches with program ideas that

introduce or reconnect children to recreational activities that reflect the rich cultural heritage of our Nova Scotia First Nation communities.

    Community Success:

Ille a La Crosse Minor Soccer Season off to a great start

Our soccer season started May 10th with practices for the first two weeks, regular season games began May 25th & will run until June 23rd with weekend playoff tournament to follow

the 8-week soccer program. We have

152 participants registered from 4 to

16 year olds. We also have 48 adults

registered in the adult soccer league

which runs 8 weeks as well. Last year

we had 82 registered, the 1st year

(2014) we had 45 participants. so its

safe to say the sport is gaining interest

as parents and participants fill the field

by the hundreds twice a week to

    enjoy the sport.

We have 10 certified coaches & 4 certified soccer officials (small sided referee). Special thanks to ACOP for providing

the necessary coaching clinics, as we had a soccer jamboree

provided by Sask Soccer for player development. Our

organization recently received temporary status as an

official soccer association with Sask Soccer

Association which grants us access to map grants,

    development, clinics etc.

1st Annual Red Ribbon Run in Pelican Narrows

In the month of May, we ho sted our First Annual Red

Ribbon Run. The vision behind the run is for youth to

partake in a pledge against violence and become

proactive in changing their community. We wanted

to give the young people who have been deeply

affected by violence a chance to do something

positive to help bring awareness and change.

This run was a great success we had over 150

runners and 200 participants. There was great

community support and a lot of different

organizations got involved to help make it a success.

Some of the organizations that got involved include

the RCMP, Northern Youth Violence Reduction

Program, PBCN Child and Family Services,

    Wapanacak School, Opawikoscikan School and

Victim Service. Because of these partnerships the run was a great success. We anticipate that this run will continue every year increase in size and

    community impact.

    Mini Marathon Run in Southend

For many years, the community of Southend hosted an annual marathon which started out at the junction which is about 22km. Throughout the years it was

shortened and it was taken over by Ron Kichula who taught at the school. When Ron left from Southend, the mini-marathon no longer took place. This year

we thought it would great to start it up again.

On Saturday, May 28th, we held our first mini-marathon. We had 38 participants from the ages 6 – 62. We weren’t sure how many to expect. There were a lot

of people who were unable to participate but said they would be there for sure next year. There were three starting points, with the first being 10 km, then 5

km and the last was 2.5km. This was a first time for the 2.5km which we added for the younger and older participants. We don’t have the easiest trail, there are

    quite a few hills.

The fastest time was 54.43 on the 10 km by David (DJ) Cook. He

maintained a good speed throughout the whole race. One of our youngest

participants Blossom Awan who is 6 completed the 10km as well.

Everyone who participated had a great time. It was awesome to see

everyone enjoying themselves. Jimmy Bird ran the whole race with a big

smile on his face. Our furthest participant, Crystal Merasty, came from

Brochet, Manitoba (the north end of Reindeer Lake) to participate in our

marathon. She said she will be back next year.

Each of the participants received a water bottle which were donated by

various agencies – NSCRD, SIGA, NITHA, Areva, PBCN Southend Health

Services, and Peter Ballantyne Child & Family Services. Hot dogs and buns

were served after the race which were donated by the local Northern

Store. We would like to thank our volunteers Beatrice Cook, Leighann

Okemau, Carol Jobb, Darryl Merasty, Rene Jobb, Gail Jobb, Tanya Cook,

Robert Clarke, Derek Jobb, Brittany Clarke, Kierra Okemau, and Patricia

Merasty. Volunteers make these types of events possible. Thank you to all

    participants and volunteers.
