Initial Response Introduction The artwork is called ‘Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer)’ is an oil painting created by Gino Severini, in the year 1914. I was drawn to look further into this artwork because it appeared very eye-catching and perplexing to me and I want to know the true meaning behind this perplexing artwork. I also really liked the technique and intricate brush strokes used by the artist to create a beautiful composition with oil paints. This piece has relevance to what we are learning in class as we are looking at ‘Art distorts, abstracts and blends space and time.’

Emotional+Memory/ ExperienceThis artwork makes me feel thrilled to learn and understand further about its real intentions. Other than thrilled it gives happiness when I look at its beautiful color combination from dark to light which gives it an 3D illusion. This piece somehow reminds me of the sea but it was used in the artwork to demonstrate someone’s emotion which is ‘excitement’ in my opinion. The artwork style reminds me of modern artwork of course because this is made in the style of Futurism.

VisualWhen I first viewed this piece, I found the swirling colorful curls the most eye-catching. The three words popped caught my attention when I took a glance at this picture were ‘intricate’ and ‘dynamic’. I feel that through these words I can summarize my preliminary opinion about Severini’s Futurist design as a painting which demonstrates the feelings of energy and happiness, through its beauty composition of exotic colors and the intricate techniques used to show the accurate representation of the feelings. As I have mentioned before swirling colorful curls draws my attention more than other components in the artwork, because of the intricate technique used by Severini which makes them look very sharp, accurate and exotic to the viewers. Also I would like to add that, personally, this artwork doesn’t give me the full vibes of seeing the real artwork physically in the gallery, or the wherever the real artwork is displayed as I am seeing this artwork for the first time online in a smaller size. So I wont know how does the artwork feel physically such as it’s texture, size, and the vibes around it.

Contextual Understanding The Artist Artist Gino Severini was an Italian painter who was one of the lead members of the futurist movement. The artist was born in April 7th, 1883 in Cortona, Italy and passed away on February 26th,1966 in Paris. Severini was very well known because of his Futurism and Cubism styled artwork. Severini to regenerate Italian art by portraying the speed and dynamism of modern life. Severini’s work did not include the typical optical implications but he shared his artistic interests accurately. Whereas the typical Futurists just included images of moving cars or machines to portray futurism but Severini usually portrayed human figures as the source of energetic motion in his paintings. Severini starte his painting career in the year 1900 while he was a student Of Giacomo Balla. Severini moved to Paris in the year 1906 due to Balla’s new painting in France, and met most of the leading members of the French avant-garde, mostly the cubist painters Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire and Georges Braque. Until 1910, he signed the Futurist painter’s manifesto, he had continued to work in the pointillist manner.

Ideas & Intentions For this artwork, I am surprised that I could quickly notice the concept what the artist is trying to portray unlike other artworks. As I have mentioned before as my initial opinion that, this artwork portrays the feelings of excitement and the movements of the sea. Basically, Severini had tried to capture the movement- freeze time and represented it in the artwork, which he had experienced earlier in one of his voyages. Furthermore, I was partially right about this artwork’s intentions and Severini has used his intricate techniques to clearly portray the movements of a dancer, the rolling rea and a spinning airplane propeller through the combination of sharp and clear brush strokes and vibrant colours.

Background/Personal + Wider context + Associations and InfluencesSeverini was mostly known for his futuristic artworks, and his artwork ‘Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer)’ typically portrays futurism accurately. This artwork shows futurism through its almost rippling motion of the colorful swirls portraying the movement of the ocean and of a colorful dancer. The Futurist created this artwork when he was influenced by his voyage through the coast of Anzio for health reasons, noticed the enormous amount of movement and energy the sea carried by. This artwork is linked with the Futurism movement—Futurism was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. Severini was captivated by the relations between matter and movement and the dynamic speeds of the modern world related mostly scientific matters. In this painting, he uses little bit of math, science and art—he uses the similar shapes and colors of the rolling sea and the enthusiasm of a dancer, to convey the composition of movements of the dancer and the Ocean.

Formal ElementsSubject Matter/Composition ‘Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer)’ by Gino Severini is

an oil on canvas painting which portrays the rhythms and the swirling motion of a dance and the the colorful dancer’s costume are compared with those of the sea’s movement and a spinning airplane propeller together represents three-dimensional space. As I have mentioned before that the vibrant colorful swirls in this piece was the most eye-catching and the main focal point of this piece. The combination of the vibrant colored swirls and the brush marvelous brush stroke technique used portrays the fascinating relationship of the intricate motion in its depiction of the association between the ocean and a female dancer. Basically, the abstract and changeable movement of the sea is personified intensely through the spirit of the swirling dancer who forms curly movements, together this artwork portrays a ‘fluid and energetic composition’.

Materials/Techniques/ Processes + Colour + Mood/ EnvironmentThe artist has laid out his painting on a 105.3 x 85.9 cm canvas. He mostly made the use of bright oil paints to this painting. For this painting Severini mostly made use of cubism and Abstract techniques. The use of brilliant monosyllabic dabs of paint caused the surface of the large curling planes to appear vibrant as it was the sun. As in various other Futurist paintings, this image is laid flat onto a black frame. The divisionist brushstroke style technique was derived from his art master Giacomo Balla and Geroges Seurat ultimately— the Neo-Impressionists, 1889–90. These brushstrokes were a reflective of neo-impressionistic techniques popular during that period which happen to also represent an adoration of speed in movement, and important Futurist aspects. He portrayed his dancer through the curving, flowing and swirling movements of their gorgeous dress by using cubism techniques. Severini made use of bright colors, such as blues, reds, greens, and pinks in this vibrant painting, as he meant to evoke the impression of ‘light dancing on the waves’ instead of just using tones of blues. Together this color combination gives the mood of enthusiasm and happiness along with colorful drama.

Introduction: The artwork is called ‘Roots’, was created by the very well-known female artist Frida Kahlo, in the year 1943. I was drawn to look further into this artwork because I found its concept very interesting. The picture itself looks very eye-catching to me as it has some unique components used to communicate its meaning to people. I also really liked the technique the artist has used to create this painting which makes the painting look very realistic and dreamy at the same time. This piece has relevance to what we are learning in class as we are looking at ‘Art distorts, abstracts and blends space and time.’

Visual:When I first took a glance at the artwork, the two words, ‘perplexing’ and ‘imaginative’ came into my mind. My honest opinion was that if the women was crazy to lie down in the middle of a dessert and give birth to vines from her torso with a poker face. And then I realized that this peculiar composition of components in the artwork might have a very creative meaning behind it as ‘the weirder the artwork looks the keener the meaning behind it is’ in my opinion. I also felt very confused as well because the event in the artwork which I saw is impossible to occur, like the vines coming out of the artists torso. At first my attention was drawn towards the vines coming out of the lady’s torso. As I have mentioned before in reality it is not possible to experience such events or they are not impossible to happen. However, when I started to look deeper into the artwork, I had noticed that the women who is giving birth to the vines from her torso might be the artist herself as someof the facial features looks similar to the artist, such as her uni-eyebrows, her skin colour and her hair. So, this artwork might be representing a very important part of her life. The leaves of the vines have more tinier vines coming out of it in red might be a repetition of blood vessels. The other parts of the artwork which drew my attention was the whole in her torso could show the part of the background which the dessert through her torso and she is not giving birth to them. As I have mentioned before that this artwork has a link with the current topic ‘Art distorts, abstracts and blends space and time’, Where Kahlo might have been trying communicate a ‘dream vision’ of hers, which she had when she was younger and she might have remembered it when she grew older. This vision might have been very important to her, that is why she has captured it as one of her self portraits as she doesn’t want to forget it.

Emotional + Memory/ExperienceThis artwork makes me feel curious to learn about the real intentions behind this intricate painting. Other than curiosity it makes me feel that anything is possible in this world referred to the vines coming out of the women’s torso in the painting. This piece reminds of naturists (a person who worships nature or natural objects). And the In the piece, Frida Kahlo is the naturist herself, where she shows her respect and love for the nature, that she ends up creating her own nature by giving birth to it.

Contextual understanding

The Artist: Artist Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was a Mexican self-portrait who was greatly and is still admired as a feminist icon. The artist’s changed her name Frida Kahlo de Rivera after her marriage with Diego Rivera, was born in July 6th, 1907 in Coyocoan, Mexico City and passed away in July 5th, 1907 in Coyocoan, Mexico City. Kahlo was considered to be one of the greatest artists in Mexico, who was mainly known as an artist and a feminist. On September 17, 1927, Kahlo was met with a severe bus accident where she suffer varies fatal injuries, it also ended her dreams of becoming a doctor and decided to become a full-time painter. During her recovery period, she had stated her desires, "to begin again, painting things just as I saw them with my own eyes and nothing more." And created most of her self-portraits, her friends and her sisters to ignore the pain caused her from the bus accident. Most of Kahlo’s works were significantly characterized by their simple portrayals of pain physically and mentally because she often created her paintings on her personal experiences, such as her marriage, her accident, her miscarriages and her various operations. She had stated, "I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality". Most of Kahlo’s works appeared with bright colors and few symbolisms as she was profoundly influenced by the indigenous Mexican culture. Kahlo became politically active and joined the Mexican Communist Party, where she was introduced to one of the most successful artists and a noble figure in the PCM, Diego Rivera. And they got married in the year of 1929.

Page 13: E-Portfolio...E-Portfolio By Rimjhim Mandal Artwork: Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer) Artist: Gino Severini Date: 1914 Location: Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice Materials: Oil on

Background + Personal/Wider contextKahlo was widely known for her self-portraits which basically demonstrated some of her personal events which had occurred in her lifetime. ‘Roots’ is also one of her self-portraits demonstrating her dream to give birth. She was greatly influenced by her miscarriages and her inability to give birth to create this artwork. The colours and the style of the artwork was from her deep obsession of Mexican culture, which most of her artworks demonstrated as well.

Associations & Influences Kahlo’s artworks have been associated with various art movements such as modern art, surrealism, indigenism, primitivism and Magic Realism. Her artwork ‘Roots’ is mostly associated with the Latin America Modern Art movement, indegenism and symbolism. The artwork is associated with Latin American Modern Art movement because during the 19th century Latin America was being highly developed and modernized due to strong foreign influence. As it is known that Frida Kahlo was deeply influenced by indigenous Mexican culture and demonstrated her influences on her artwork. Similar she painted ‘Roots’ with bright and used the colours of the Mexican flag like orange and green in the indigenous Mexican style (primitivism). The artwork has also depicted symbolism as Kahlo had symbolized her reunion with her estranged husband Diego Rivera after the phase of pain and suffering through the vines reaching for the ground.

Ideas & Intentions It is a little difficult to completely understand the true meaning behind this artwork but I have mentioned before, in my opinion I believe that Frida Kahlo tried to portray a significant movement in her life which might have not actually occurred in her life, where she believed that it was possible for impossible things to occur sometimes in life. And demonstrated her feelings and imagination of that movement through this artwork. The vines coming out of her torso symbolizes that anything is possible to happen in life if it is truly believed to happen.

Formal elements:

Subject Matter (What is the work about?)Roots by Frida Kahlo is an oil on canvas painting which states her that all life can join in a single flow by depicting herself as her torso opens up like a window and gives birth to a vine. The focal point of this piece is Kahlo herself giving birth to the vines from her wide-open torso. This composition demonstrates her dream of having the ability to give birth as a childless woman. The other components in the artwork such as the long vines and the dry earth illustrates of her dreaming to become the tree of life as she lies down with her elbow supporting her head as a pillow, while her blood circulates through the vines towards the leaves and then flows into the dry earth to hydrate it.

Materials/Techniques + Colours + Mood/Atmosphere/ EnvironmentThe artist has laid out her painting on a 30.5 x 499 cm canvas. She mostly made the use of bright oil paint to her painting. Frida Kahlo had used fine brushstrokes to illustrate gradual changes in value (light and dark). As she focused a lot on the tiny details of the artwork such as the tiny red veins, the dark green veins on the leaves and the composition of light and dark tones of the shade brown on the earth gave it the 3D illustration. This technique helped her to demonstrated her wish of the dream to become as a realistic movement in her life. Fine lines gave these components to form their accurate shapes. The ground is a mixture of dark and light shades of brown which gives a three-dimensional illusion to the objects on it. Bright colors are found throughout the painting as it is made in the indigenous Mexican style which basically represents the moods of happiness, positivity and honesty. Such as, the bright orange color used for her dress accurately differentiates the dark brown ground and herself. The color combination of bright and dark colors clearly demonstrates the painting to be a jolly and a realistic movement in her life just like her dream.

Similarities: Both artists, Frida Kahlo and Gino Severini have painted the paintings in there unique personal techniques and styles. Both the paintings have relations with the concept of our unit which we are looking at the moment ‘Art distorts, abstracts and blends space and time’. Surprisingly, these two paintings are modern style artworks which are displayed with vibrant and bright colors this may be to make their artworks appear as realistic as possible. The 3D effect was lucidly displayed in both the artworks. Materials wise, both of the artworks are laid out on canvas and painted with oil paints. Intentionally, both the artists tried to portray a significant moment of their lives in the artworks. Furthermore, both the artist had focused on displaying both human and nature together in one painting with interesting backgrounds related with the concept of the artworks.

Differences : One of the significant differences which can be easily spotted is that ‘Roots’ by Frida Kahlo is a self-portrait of herself in her dream, whereas ‘Sea=dancer’ by Gino Severini is an artwork showing a real moment which the artist had experienced in reality. ‘Roots’ doesn't’t represent the blend of space and time, it is only relates to art distorts and abstract. ’Roots’ was painted with fine brushstrokes with oil paints and ’Sea=Dancer’ was painted with devisionist brushstrokes of oil paints. But ‘Sea=Dancer represent the blend of space and time, art distort and abstract. The artist of ‘Roots’ was Frida Kahlo and she was a strong feminist and represents components of feminism in her artwork and Gino Severini was a famous futurist who represented futurism in his artwork quite accurately. The pieces are made 29 years apart form each other and in different countries, ’Sea=Dancer’ is much older was made in 1914 in Italy and ‘Roots’ was made in the year 1943 in Mexico.

Human have always been thinking about how to have a successful future so that our future generations can be more efficient, successful and have a better living standard than us. They always think of the future first and proceed with their lives as it is the only sensible decision to make for being successful in life. Lots of people have their own dreams and thoughts about how the future will look-like and what will be in it. For my final piece I intend to blend space and time by forming an illusion of the future of my dream of humans being able to create a city in the space and the development of communication of humans with animals, as I always try to think as broad as possible than other people around me. So from my mind map I have basically chosen to do idea #3, which is life in space. I have received the idea of creating an illusion of past dreams from the great surrealist artist ‘Frida Kahlo’. As most of Frida Kahlo’s artworks follows surrealism, but my main idea has generated from her artwork called ”Roots” which I have also analyzed for this unit.

Frida Kahlo [Blog post]. (n.d.).

For my draft I will be demonstrating my statement of intent for my final piece so that I will know the exact works to improve and put into my final piece. In this draft I will using the ideas of my future dream- life in space. Frida Kahlo – her idea of using surrealism in art. and some from the internet to accomplish a full complete illustration of my dream. I will be using materials such as watercolors, watercolor sheets, water and paint brushes for creating the draft.

7/2/18 – 8/2/18This week I had searched up ideas online for creating my illusion for my draft. I found various types of ideas of from the internet with similar ideas but they did not have the same meaning behind them which I have for my final piece. These are the pictures below from which I will be creating my complete illusion:

Page 21: E-Portfolio...E-Portfolio By Rimjhim Mandal Artwork: Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer) Artist: Gino Severini Date: 1914 Location: Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice Materials: Oil on

From this image, I will be taking the ideas of the two living human being who will be the two human beings representing the future. One of them will be a man clock man and the other one an astronaut, as the clock man will represent the quote of Stanly Stephen , "Time never waits for anyone, everybody waits for time". This quote will represent the changes made by humans in the future and how time is still flowing as it is unstoppable.

This image will represent the earth's physical natural beauty in the future. It will represent my idea of how in the future human will developed cities in the space and half of the world's population will leave the earth due to our population. This will result the earth to be empty and leave the earth to redevelop its natural beauty with less human beings in it.

From this image, I will be only using the idea of the boat. I will be creating this boat in my illusion for demonstration the transportation of the clock man, as to show the illusion of that time never waits and it keeps on going and never stops. This will help the audience understand the difference between the astronaut and the clock man in my piece.

Page 22: E-Portfolio...E-Portfolio By Rimjhim Mandal Artwork: Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer) Artist: Gino Severini Date: 1914 Location: Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice Materials: Oil on

11/2/18– 15/2/18This week I have started and completed my experimentation draft for my final piece. So I have basically used water, paint brushes a watercolor paper and watercolors to accomplish my draft. I used watercolors for the experimentation because first of all I am good with using watercolors than any other form of painting colors, I was experimenting if whether I could make the painting vibrant at the same time give it a very soothing and smooth effect. And also, it took less time to dry and be ready by the end of the day. This draft was basically the demonstration of my statement of intent for this project where I have combined all of the ideas which I had conceived from the internet and from my dreams of the future.

WWW: (What went well)• The painting had dried up very soon.• I had finished completing the painting on time before the deadline. • The painting has included every ideas which I had stored down for the illusion• I was able to combine all of the ideas pretty smoothly together. • I was also able to demonstrate every idea clearly which made the painting’s intention

much clear. EBI: (Even Better If) • The colors I used in the painting did not appear to be very vibrant and smooth as I

thought it would have been. • I had forgot to stretch the paper before I started to paint on it, so it resulted the paper to

cramp up. • Even I have manage to include all the ideas I had in my head into the draft, I still feel like

I could added more ideas which would have made my dream look more realistic.

Thinking skills - I have conceived the idea for my draft through various way, such as, the idea of surrealism from Frida Kahlo, my dream of the future, the internet by thinking about space and time. The idea first started to generate in my brain while I was analyzing Frida Kahlo’s artwork called “Roots "in which she had portrayed a very significant dream of hers to be able to give birth. Similarly the idea of my future dream had popped into my brain. Then I did some research on the internet about surrealism and some images which has helped to build my creation.

Social skills - The project was an Individual project so I have not worked collaboratively but I have received various ideas for my project from my other peers in my art class. Such as at the beginning of the project when we had reached to the developing ideas and proposal stage I was very unsure about what to do for my final piece. Then some of my peers helped me to come up with various ideas which are related to my chosen artist’s works. I had also returned them the same favor, where I have helped some of my peers by being their work’s model and helped people to come up with ideas for their final piece which are related to their chosen artists.

Communication skills - Not a lot of my peers gave their opinions about my work but the people who did, found my work to have a very creative idea behind it and told me to improve/change the materials which I used for creating my piece

Self management skills - After I completed my work Mr. Keys asked me to think about what I could do to theoretically further develop my project. I then thought about using a motor instead of a crank as it would be more efficient.

Research skills - I had conducted a lot of physical research for the draft of my final piece as I waned to create the best and clear illustration of my dream.

CHANGES TO CONSIDER FROM MY DRAFT:20/2/18

• I would be using 2 different types of paints for creating my final piece, such as watercolors and various colored inks. I am going to use colored inks because it will make the important parts of my painting on the paper appear very vibrant and colorful. As I have already used inks to complete some of my previous paintings for the previous units, so I know how to use them and how they will look on my final piece.

• With reference to the artist Frida Kahlo and her artwork called ‘Roots’ I will be combing more ideas from the internet to form my final piece and complete the idea, such as:

In my proposal I had stated that “ being able to create a city in the space.” But my draft did not demonstrate that sentence well enough so I have decided to use the idea of buildings and putting it to my final piece. This will make my intention for the final piece appear more strong as it will basically show more evidences of life in the space.

Another aspect from my proposal stated that “ able to demonstrate the development of communication of humans with animals”. But I haven’t really reflected this aspect well in my draft as well. So I have decided to follow/pick some idea from this image, of humans being able to communicate with animals

Page 26: E-Portfolio...E-Portfolio By Rimjhim Mandal Artwork: Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer) Artist: Gino Severini Date: 1914 Location: Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice Materials: Oil on

21/2/18

Today I have gathered up all the required materials for creating my final piece together, such as watercolors, inks, paintbrushes, water, stretching paper tape, watercolor paper and a board. In this lesson I have made sure to fix the base where I going to lay my painting on, by stretching the paper with the tape on the board with the help of my art teacher, Mr. Keys. I was also busy taking photographs of each step of this project and updated my website.

Page 27: E-Portfolio...E-Portfolio By Rimjhim Mandal Artwork: Mare = Ballerina (Sea = Dancer) Artist: Gino Severini Date: 1914 Location: Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice Materials: Oil on

22/2/18As soon as I finished collecting the materials for my final piece, I started to ketch out the outline for my painting precisely by using a 2B pencil. I have recreated similar background as my draft because there was nothing really to edit or change from the background. Then I added the new changes such as the astronaut on the whale in the air, the stereotypical city, the future earth and space. For having a better representation of my dream than in my draft, I have decided to divided the painting into 2 haves, the right side of the page shows the future earth and the left side shows the city created by humans in the future in the space. These 2 haves are then divided into 2 scenarios, such as in the right side the bottom half represents earth’s fresh water and the top half represents the sky and humans being able to communicate with animals. In the bottom part of the left side shows the base of any planet and the idea of time never waits, the top half shows the future of space with cities built in it.

27/2/18 – 07/03/2018

Today I have started to paint my artwork after I had finished doing the outline of the idea. By creating a complete outline of my artwork helped me to understand how and where I will be placing the colors on my painting. I have then started to paint my painting with applying watercolors as the base coat then I applied colored ink on to the area which are supposed to look more vibrant and and help it to standout more than the less important parts of my artwork. I am making the background color of each of the 4 scenarios vibrant from dark to light shades because these backgrounds represent the sky and water of the settings.

08/03/18 – Final piece completed!

I have managed to complete my final piece on time a week before the deadline. For the final touches of my painting, I decided to re-outline the drawings with a black felt tip pen to make sure that each items standout more from each other. For my final piece, I just followed Frida Kahlo’s idea from her artwork “Roots” of re-creating impossible ideas (Surrealism) from past dreams and presenting it in the form of art so that it will help us to re-live our past dreams in the future when every time we look at our artworks. As I already know faced statements from my peers when they saw my piece like ”What is the meaning behind?”, “I am getting confused!” These were the statements which Frida Kahlo’s intention of creating her piece was and following that it was my intention as well linking to my statement of intent. And I was successful to get those statements from my peers.

• Evidence of the use of acquired knowledge to inform the development of the student’s artwork:

The artist whose work I chose to analyze for my investigation was Frida Kahlo. After looking at Kahlo’s piece ‘Roots’, I chose to depict her idea behind this artwork into my final piece. After studying about Kahlo’s piece, Igained learnt about how anything is possible to communicate through art and more knowledge on surrealism. Surrealism is a visual art and a literature movement which began in the early 1920’s in France. This movement is known for releasing creativity from a hallucination, fantasy or an unrealistic idea into an art form or literature form, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. The use of the idea of surrealism in Kahlo’s artworks made her audience give make statements like,“This is confusing”, “Unrealistic” and “Impossible” all the time including myself. But once her intentions and ideas behind her artworks are known clearly then it makes more sense to understand her artworks. Kahlo’s artwork “Roots” had demonstrated her dream of giving birth. As she was greatly influenced by her miscarriages and her inability to give birth which caused her to create this artwork. to create this artwork. The colors and the style of the artwork was from her deep obsession of Mexican culture, which most of her artworks demonstrated as well. In conclusion Kahlo had communicated her demonstrated her unrealistic dream through the idea of surreal art and Mexican colors to reflect the pride for her country. After studying Kahlo’s piece, I was convinced to do my final piece by painting it by on a paper just the way Kahlo accomplished her piece, but I couldn’t use the colors of my country’s flag on my piece because my idea was different than hers in that matter. Finally I was able to demonstrate my idea on my final piece, which was my dream of the future where humans build cities in the space, the earth become cleaner and safer and the ability of communication of humans and animals becoming stronger.

• Evidence of the student’s ability to construct meaning and transfer learning into their artwork:

Throughout the process of my final piece, I think that I was able to add much as possible details from my dream from the past and gain as much possible information about surreal artworks, Frida Kahlo, her artworks, and their ideas. While I was doing my artwork, I felt very comfortable and enthusiastic to just put everything from the dream, its emotions and its meaning in this piece. So that when my audience look at this piece they will feel more connected to me as they will know how I feel about the future. At the beginning of the experimentation, the plan was to just demonstrate the idea of my dream in the form of just watercolor painting on a paper but gradually after I had finished my experimentation, I learnt a lot about surrealist artwork and it does help to communicate ideas and emotions well with other peers, so I realized that I can be more comfortable and aware that it is absolutely alright to express them by using the idea of surrealism in art. So I had decided to expand my idea more and tried to include as much as details possible from the dream to reflect all the emotions related to the dream. I had also added more new details to my final piece than my draft as in my draft I was just testing what would my idea turn out to look like in my final piece and I felt pretty comfortable with the draft so I moved ahead and added more details, such as the city in space and the astronaut riding the whale in the sky.

This allowed me to not only demonstrate the idea of the dream but also create the emotions and feelings of excitement, happiness and it also creates the urge to move forward to the future and not turn back to the past as time never waits for anyone it keeps on moving forward.

• The artistic response and the way in which it reflects or impacts on the world:

In my final, I basically I distorted space and time by creating an artwork with the idea of a glimpse of the future, but it is drawn in the present. I then pushed the boundaries more by adding unrealistic ideas into the dream like what if humans can communicate and ride on whales or the idea of developing a whole big city in space in the future as time moves forward. This was a distortion of time because I was painting an image of my dream of the future where humans will be able to develop a city/world in the space and demonstrating that time never waits. Who knows that the idea might be possible to occur within the next 100/50 years.

My piece clearly states that Time is an essential part of humans, for any living things and actually it makes everything to evolve or change as it keeps on moving forward and results in new things to occur with it. With the concept of time doesn’t wait, we would not be able to exist or evolve. Everything flows in the cycle of time even though they appear stationary just like the water cycle, carbon cycle and etc. Which occurs in nature.

WWW:→ Global Context: In terms of the global context; orientation in space and time, my artwork was able to express this in away that I addressed where as time moves on humans will be able to create a living in the space in the future by blending present and future as I did the artwork of the future in the present.

→ Related Concept: In my opinion, I was able to show the related concept; boundaries, in my artwork through the experimentation of breaking and dissolving the boundaries of the future and the present by creating unrealistic ideas related to space and time.

→ Statement of Inquiry My piece was able to hugely follow my statement of inquiry of this unit which is art distorts and blends space and time. I demonstrated this in my piece as I distorted space and time by merging creating a painting of my future dream n the present, who knows that this idea maybe possible in the future someday.

EBI:→ Key Concept: I think that I haven't paid much attention to the key concept of the unit which was communication. As I created the piece with my own idea, so I know what my piece exactly what the the piece means. But when I showed it to my peers they were confused about the meaning behind the piece which was partially my goal in my statement of intent but as well as I was suppose to make the So, for next time I would try to work hard as possible on improving this skill, by maybe making less unrealistic scenarios and more real life ones. → I have put a lot of unnecessary objects in my piece: I think this because some of the objects don't relate at all with my idea such as, the tiny space ship in ocean and the whale flying up in the sky. These aspects make my artwork more confusing for my peers and doesn’t really match up with the statement of intent. For , next I will minimisethe addition of unnecessary objects to my final piece as much as possible so that the meaning behind my artwork is more clear.

A critique of the student’s own artwork including its ability to distort, abstract or blend space and time:
