The Church in the World

AP: Number of U.S. abortions has gone down since 2010 WASHINGTON (CNS) -- An Associated Press survey of abortion in the United States this decade has revealed that the number of abortions has gone down by 12 percent since 2010. The news was welcomed by pro-life advocates. "It's important to realize, first of all, that the factors accounting for this are multiple, complex and often hard to measure," said a June 7 statement from Father Frank Pavone, the national director and chairman of Priests for Life, based in Staten Island, New York. But Father Pavone added, "The primary reason well may be the abortion industry itself," which he said "has been imploding for years." One factor cited by AP in its survey was the continuing decline in the rate of teen pregnancy. While no new numbers have been issued since those for 2010, the 2010 figures were the "lowest level in decades," according to AP. The AP study showed that some states had reductions as high as 15 percent.

Law enforcement, archdioceseshare the goal of protecting ST. PAUL, Minn. (CNS) -- Catholic officials affirmed the commitment of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis to protecting children and pledged to continue to work with an ongoing investigation after the Ramsey County Attorney's Office criminally charged the archdiocese for failing to protect children. The charges allege the archdiocese contributed to the harm of three minors sexually abused by former priest Curtis Wehmeyer. "We all share the goal of protecting children," said Judge Tim O'Malley, the archdiocese's director of ministerial standards and safe environment, who spoke to the press alongside Auxiliary Bishop Andrew H. Cozzens outside of the archdiocese's chancery. "To that end, the archdiocese will continue to work with the St. Paul Police Department and the Ramsey County Attorney's Office, as well as our private and public sector partners, to accomplish that goal," O'Malley said.

New registration site for busescoming to Philadelphia for papal visit PHILADELPHIA (CNS) -- All commercial charter buses and privately owned buses coming to Philadelphia for the visit by Pope Francis in September will need to register at a website for that purpose, it was announced June 4. Go Ground has been designated the official transportation management

partner of the World Meeting of Families, and has developed the bus registration website http://wmof.goground.com. The firm will handle charter bus registration, certification of operators, logistics and bus parking for the papal events in Philadelphia this September. Underscoring the urgency of registration, the website said the streets in the center of Philadelphia will be closed to traffic during the pope's visit, without elaborating which streets.

Peace demands passion, patience, hard work, pope tells Balkan nation SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (CNS) -- To overcome fear, discrimination and conflict, people must have a deep desire to open themselves up to God and his mercy, and work actively for peace every day, Pope Francis said. God's plan for creation is peace, "which always meets opposition from humanity and the devil," he said during a one-day visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina June 6. The cold reality today is that the world is facing "a kind of Third World War being fought in piecemeal" amidst "an atmosphere of war" worldwide, he said on the 71st anniversary of "D-Day," the World War II anniversary of Allied forces landing in Normandy marking the liberation of Europe. But the "ray of sunshine piercing the clouds" is Christ's appeal to work for peace, the pope said during an outdoor Mass in the capital's Kosevo sports stadium, where more than 60,000 people gathered from different parts of the Balkan region under a hot, hazy sky.

Vatican ready to announce decision, guidelines on Medjugorje, pope says ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT FROM SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (CNS) -- Pope Francis said the Vatican was ready to make an announcement concerning the alleged Marian apparitions in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith met recently to discuss the issue and "we've reached the point of making a decision and then they will say," he told journalists on the flight back to Rome June 6. The expected announcement will include "just some guidelines (the congregation) will give to the bishops," he said in response to a reporter's question. An international commission of cardinals, bishops, theologians and other experts, working under the auspices of the doctrinal congregation, was set up in 2010 to investigate the claims of six young people who said Mary had appeared to them daily beginning in 1981.
