EPC @ partners.inc is a research company founded by Eric Le Ray in june 2007 in Canada. He has been a post-phD researcher since October 2009 at the CREM of the University Paul Verlaine of Metz. In recent years he has developped a research program on the evolution of media, from print to screen and book to electronic paper, which includes a process of convergence and mobility.

His aim is to monitor the industrial evolution of these media towards the new post industrial economy, and to understand the mechanism and implications of this evolution in regard with traditional media. He wants to understand how this evolution is experienced by publishing professio-nals, the press, but also more widely by professionals in the graphic chain attached to the print and traditional media, public institutions and private individuals.

To achieve this goal, the Franco-Canadian EPC @ Partners. Inc., first com-pany of its kind in Canada, with shareholders from the various industries and graphic communications, proposes events such as seminars or profes-sional forums but also technological monitoring services..

Here are some exemples :

• Creation of a review, e-paperWorld magazine, with a survey of e-books, applications and smart media developments

• Creation of an editing company, EPC@edition, supporting the publication of the forementioned survey, as well as various books on the subject.

• Creation of OBS@e-paper, an international observatory for e-books, applications and smart media, with the participation of economists such as Guy Millière, specialized journalists or blogers, academic teachers and prospectivists like Lorenzo Socavo, and industry professionals such as Jacques Angelé, founder of the French company Nemoptic.

An inaugural symposium was held at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in France (CNAM) March 12, 2009 in Paris for the release of the book « La bataille de l’imprimé à l’ère du papier électronique « published by the University Press of Montreal, and to present research results by Eric Le Ray.

The international dimension of the achievements of epc @ partners.inc is a reality today. That is why we will organize the second edition of an inter-national forum, e-paperworld 2010 Paris, after the end of the one organized in Montreal in September 2009.

The International Forum on e-books, applications and smart media, conver-gence and mobility, will be held on May 6 and 7 2010, in Local Universcience at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris. [email protected] wants to offer with this forum an exhibition space within an innovative trade show, meetings and discussions for all, allowing visi-tors to attend roundtable discussions and individual conferences.

This event, the first of its kind in Europe and France, aims at enabling a true appropriation of this media revolution, finally within reach, gathering professionals and researchers in this field while discovering New Readers available on the market or under development.

This Show was designed for companies that operate throughout the digital chain from authors to readers: those involved in the digital content as well as those involved in the digital medium, writers, journalists, publishers, people involved in the digitization process or in archives, readers manufacturers.

Software and mobile companies will also take part, besides convergent media such as cellular phones and e-books and all kinds of actors in the digital chain, from its origin to the professionals of the graphic chain.

The goal of this symposium is also to show various applications of the electronic paper innovation, and the different technologies used in the process of scanning and reading data interfaces (E-ink or LCD).

Members of the monitoring group OBS @ E-PAPER will constitute the jury. They will select the winners of three professional awards, whereas it will be the visitors who will have to answer a survey and choose the three audience awards. A lottery will allow one or more visitors to win an electronic reader.

The board will also present two special awards to pioneer companies in their field or industry. The purpose of these awards is to recognize three categories of winners: the company offering the best services in digital publishing and press, the one which offers the best software and the one which offers the best e-reader’s considering readability, usability, writing, services, price, performance and technological accessibility.

En juin 2007, quelques mois avant la fin de mon second post-doctorat au nouveau Centre intégré en pâtes et papiers (CIPP), à la Chaire de recherche industrielle Quebecor sur l’impression et la communication graphique de l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, j’ai décidé de fonder une société individuelle Papier électronique et Com-munication, EPC @ Partners, afin de poursuivre mes recherches de veille autour de l’émergence d’un nouveau support de communication révolu-tionnaire : le papier électronique.

Ce papier ou « papiel » a l’ambition de remplacer le papier bois qui depuis le XIXe siècle do-mine le marché et la civilisation de l’imprimé qui est apparue au XVe siècle. Celle de l’électronique avec l’informatique, Internet et l’ordinateur individuel, a émergé après la Seconde Guerre mondiale grâce à l’électricité, une source d’éner-gie apparue, elle, au XIXe siècle. Elle se prolonge naturellement vers des interfaces de lecture intelligentes, mobiles et convergentes afin de servir l’évolution sociale, conséquence de l’ex-pansion des valeurs de la modernité.

En 2009, à peine plus de trente ans nous séparent des premières recherches autour du papier électronique. La progression de ce secteur et de ses lecteurs sur le marché des communications et des nouveaux médias est estimée à 30 ou 40% par année depuis 2007. Depuis les premières applications industrielles associées au journal Les échos en France en septembre 2007, en Europe, ou à Amazon aux États-Unis en octobre de la même année avec son lecteur Kindle, la progression de ce secteur est fulgurante. Nous assistons en effet à une guerre des lecteurs et des standards avec en perspective le remplace-ment du papier comme support de lecture dans l’édition et la presse, [qui seront ?] les premières

victimes de ce nouveau support de connaissance et de savoir ou simplement véhicule de données ou d’informations.

Le modèle de la presse Gutenberg, où l’on imprime et l’on diffuse l’information, se fait rem-placer par le processus inverse. On diffuse pour imprimer ensuite. C’est le secteur de l’impression numérique qui devrait récupérer plus de 50% du marché de l’impression traditionnelle d’ici 2020 et non 2050. Mais alors, que l’impression tra-ditionnelle autour de l’offset, qui remplaça la typographie, se fait remplacer inexorablement par l’impression numérique, un troisième modèle apparaît qui ne laisse pas le temps aux deux pre-miers de se stabiliser. Le cycle des révolutions et des changements s’accélère au contraire du mo-dèle de la presse de Gutenberg qui mis plus de cinq cents ans pour évoluer vers la rotative et les médias de masse au XIXe siècle. Cette évolution est à l’image de la révolution individuelle qui a ses racines dans la période gréco-romaine, de l’ap-parition de la philosophie, avec les conséquences technoscientifiques que l’on connaît en Occident. Trois révolutions industrielles : celle du Moyen Âge, celle du XIXe siècle et celle d’aujourd’hui qui s’oriente vers une société post-industrielle où la connaissance, les ressources humaines et l’individu sont au centre de notre société et des révolutions technologiques.

Nous entrons dans une autre dimension et c’est cette dimension que nous voulons explorer en créant un Observatoire international des papiers électroniques et des médias intelligents (OPEMI). Avec EPC @ Partners, cet observatoire prendra en charge, grâce à la création d’une maison d’édition, EPC édition, la publication d’ouvrages, de rapports, notre revue E-PaperWorld magazine et l’organisation du salon professionnel E-PaperWorld associé à des rencontres ponc-tuelles ou des colloques.
