My Perspective on the Objects ofKiwanis By: Todd Simmons

Even though we start our meetings each weekby reading one of the objectives of Kiwanis, sometimes I feel like we take them forgranted. So this week I just wanted to go overthem in a little more detail. According todictionary.com, an objective is somethingthat one's efforts or actions areintended to attain or accomplish; a purpose, goal or target.

To give primacy to the human and spiritualrather than the material values of life. Whenwe strive to make human and spiritual valuesa goal over material things, we put people andtheir needs above other things. Our clubintends to help the children in our community, not just with money, food, or books, but withour time, experience, leadership andknowledge.

Mansfield Kiwanis Learns About TheNeeds for Homeless Children

By: Greg Barberee

Did you know that more than 3,000 children inDallas go to bed each night without a home oftheir own? On Friday, February 16, 2018, theMansfield Kiwanis heard from Brian Millage, the Assistant Director of Engagement withVogel Alcove, a non-profit organization thathas been helping the homeless children inDallas since 1987. Vogel Alcove currently operates in the old CityPark Elementary School (Built by DISD in1917) and serves the needs of approximately200 homeless students and their families. Thechilldren (ages 6 weeks to 5 years) in theirprogram come from 25 homeless shelters inthe Dallas area. Their mission is to helpchildren recover form the effects ofhomelessness during the critical formativeyears when 90% of a child's braindevelopment occurs. Vogel Alcove provides asafe, healthy environment for homeless

To encourage the daily living of the GoldenRule in all human relationships. TheGolden Rule is found in the book of Mathew7:12. Do unto others as you would have themdo unto you. I believe we all want to betreated with respect and feel valued byothers. We should strive to do the same toothers. Go out of your way to make others feelimportant and appreciated.

To promote the adoption and theapplication of higher social, business, andprofessional standards. Sometimes I feellike this country has spiraled into an abyss thatlacks standards of any kind. Our club shouldtry to show Mansfield that we live by a highercode of conduct. We treat others fairly andwith kindness so that our interactions makeour community a better place to live, work, andplay.

To develop by precept and example a moreintelligent, aggressive, and serviceablecitizenship. As a rule, our actions shouldspeak louder than our words. Learn about ourfellow citizens, know the issues that affect ourcommunity so that we can approach otherswith an intelligent, well thought out process.Being aggressive does not mean to bullyothers into thinking as a Kiwanian, but to makean all-out effort to succeed. Making Mansfieldthe best city in America should be somethingwe all want for the next generation. And weshould teach our children that service toothers is the ultimate way to improve oursociety.

To provide, through Kiwanis Clubs, apractical means to form enduringfriendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities. My favoriteBible verse is John 15:12-13, My command isthis: Love each other as I have loved you,Greater love has no one than this, that he laydown his life for his friends. What better wayto form and enduring friendship than to bewilling to sacrifice for another. In fact, altruisticservice is unselfishly concerned for or devotedto the welfare of others. By giving of yourselfto improve the life of another, we automaticallybuild a better community.

To cooperate in creating and maintainingthat sound public opinion and highidealism which makes possible theincrease in righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will. As Kiwanis, ourreputation should be without fault. We shouldact in an upright and moral way. Seek justicefor those who are in need. Support ourcountry, flag, leaders and those protecting ourfreedoms and way of life. And promote anattitude of good will rather than animosity andanger.

parents to leave their children while theparent(s) work to get back on their feet. Vogel Alcove provides free, ealy childhoodcomprehensive services that includeseducation and health and wellness. VogelAlcove's early childhool program is accreditedby the National Association for the Educationof Young Children (NAEYC), a distinction thatonly 8% of child care providers have received. Vogel Alcove also provides family support.95% of the children served belong to familiesheaded by a single mother, usually in her 20'swith more than 1 child younger than age 6.Vogel Alcove assists with a support system ofservices that includes but is not limited to 1:1case management to work on personal goalsand challenges; mental health support andreferrals, access to resources for their childrensuch as clothes diapers, etc., employementand/or education assistance. According to Brian, homeless children are themost invisible and neglected members of ourcommunity; however, Vogel Alcove isdedicated to helping these children not onlycope with the physical, emotional and mentaltrauma of the homelessness experience. Their vision is that every child in ourcommunity has a home, a self sufficient family, and a pathway to success in school. The mission of Kiwanis International is toempower communities to improve the world bymaking lasting differences in the lives ofchildren. I would encourage all of our fellowKiwanis clubs in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area toconsider reaching out to Brian Millage andschedule a presentation for your Club. Thework of Vogel Alcove is an inspiration. Theyare truly working to make an impact on thelives of these children and famlies. Thank youBrian for your important and impactfulmessage. Feed the Kids for Summer Program

In 2006 Common Ground created a way to help feed childrenduring the summer that relied on the Federal free or reducedlunch program during the school year by creating the Feedthe Kids Program.

Money for this program was in very short supply until TheKiwanis Club of Mansfield heard about the efforts of CommonGround and joined forces to meet the needs of thesechildren. The following year the Mansfield Kiwanis providedsubstantial financial resources, volunteers and bags tosupport the Feed the Kids Program.
