President’s Report for E-News October 2016

I would like to take the opportunity to inform all our members that

the Management Committee has approved in principle for

expenditure on a number of renovations to the interior of our

building over the next 6 months or so. Two replacement toilet bowls

and sinks have been installed in the Ladies Bathroom already and

further expenditure is expected on painting the walls in the main

playing room/foyer/toilets, replacing blinds on windows in the

playing room, renovating the service area in front of the kitchen and possibly installing a new linoleum floor

in the dining area.

Following delays to our relocation to new premises we have signed a new lease with the City of South Perth

that will cover the next 5 years with the option of a further 5 years, if required. There is a clause in the lease

to cater for relocation to new premises before this time expires if the council provides us with a suitable

alternative. Many thanks to Bob Mitchell for negotiating with the City of South Perth while the lease was

being finalised.

Bob will continue to liaise with the council over renovations to the building that require council approval

such as a new roof and major modifications to the toilet areas.

On bridge matters I would like to bring to player’s attention that the club has agreed to follow the ABF’s

100% rule. This rule states that no player should play more than 15 sessions at a club affiliated with the ABF

without having an ABF number.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Pam Smith for her wonderful service to our bridge club

over many years. Pam has decided to retire from directing bridge and we all wish her well for the future.

Hello Everyone

I felt that as I begin as Editor of the South Perth Newsletter that I should introduce myself. I really do feel though, as if I am the ‘new girl on the block’. I am a reasonably new member to South Perth Bridge Club and while I am delighted to be able assist, I do so with some trepidation. Wendy Harman came to me some time ago and asked if I would consider taking over the writing of the Newsletter and my initial response was ‘but I know so few people’ and Wendy’s reply ‘Well this is how you will do so’! As I do hope in the future to bring some member profiles to the Newsletter, just as Jane Walker did, I felt it may be appropriate for this month, to provide a short synopsis of my life.

I was born in South Africa but spent almost my entire life in Zimbabwe. I married, I worked with my husband in businesses, I have three children, five adult grandchildren and one of eighteen months!!! The family decided to apply to immigrate to Australia after my husband was targeted in a politically motivated disturbance at our business in Harare. He was severely injured and very sadly succumbed to his injuries just under three years later here in Australia. It was some fourteen years ago, that we moved as a family, ‘en masse’, and we are settled, happy, embrace the people, the culture and the beauty of Australia and are forever grateful that we were accepted into this country.

My bridge career started in my forties in Harare when I, with seven others, went for lessons with an elderly, irascible, feisty lady who loved the men and hated the women. The men could do no wrong and the women could do no right!!! We girls had a point to prove!! And I so well remember going to my first introduction to competition, when I sat at the table and said a small silent prayer hoping that I would not have to bid or that I would not pick up any good hands for the duration!!! Today there is so much to be said for Supervised bridge which allows for this type of situation completely and eradicates the problem of being thrown in at the deep end!!

I live in Kalamunda and I am an active member of Kalamunda Bridge Club and I love the game of bridge. I look forward to writing your Newsletter, I look forward, to many happy games of bridge at South Perth, and hope that in time I may do the Newsletter justice, and I welcome any suggestions from members, as to how I may do it justice. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Jane Walker and members of the Committee and the Club who have already been of invaluable assistance to me in setting up the Newsletter. Thank you all very much.

Recently, in my study I decided to tackle a pile of filing which unaccountably never seems to end! In that pile I came across the following:

THE EARLY DAYS OF CARD PLAY

The origin of playing cards was in China where paper was invented and dates back to the year 1120. Originally, cards were used for fortune telling and gambling. Cards were introduced into Italy and Spain around 1370 probably coming from Egypt. Saint Bernardo warned the ‘Faithful’ that cards were invented by the devil and in 1495 Henry V11 issued a decree forbidding his servants from playing cards. Later Elizabeth the first levied a tax on the manufacture of playing cards but by the era of Queen Anne card playing was in full swing. The Ace of Spades is so distinctive because it was the official stamp of certification to indicate that the proper English tax had been paid on that deck of cards. By 1860 the Europeans and the Americans accepted card rank naming convention markings on the faces that declared their values. The faces on the Kings were based on historical Rulers:

Alexander the Great – Clubs Julius Caesar – Diamonds Charles the Great – Hearts David the King of Israel – Spades Equally other historical figures were used on Queens and Jacks. Some believe that the 12 Honours of the deck refer to the 12 signs of the Zodiac or the 12 months of the year. The two colours (Red and Black) refer to the Solstice and Equinox phases. The four suits as the four seasons and the entire pack of 52 cards representing the 52 weeks of the year and the 13 cards in each suit being the same as the weeks in each quarter of the year (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn). Bridge was derived from Russian Whist which was called Biritch, meaning an announcer (Players “announce or Herald” their auction). Books on Whist date back to the mId -1700’s. In 1857 the English began paying Whist in a “duplicate” method to eliminate luck and in 1883 the American’s began playing whist inner-club matches. In 1891, a duplicate tray was invented and used to hold the cards separately so players could replay identical hands. Early accounts indicate that in 1903 some of the British Civil Servants in India created a method of bidding the trump suit, coined “auction bridge” … And so began the era of bridge.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF A WELL LOVED AND RESPECTED MEMBER OF SOUTH PERTH BRIDGE CLUB – MARY De FEAUX

It is with great sadness that South Perth Bridge Club announces the passing of Mary. Mary has been a long time member of the Club and has been a friend to so many of the members. It has been my privilege to speak to two of Mary’s good friends, Jo Young and Meryl Curtis and it is they who have given me a little insight into Mary’s life. Mary was born

in Queensland although she has lived in Perth for the past fifty years and resided in South Perth until she died. She had two brothers both of whom are deceased, and although Mary was previously married she had no children, but she had so very many good and loyal friends.

Mary had decided nursing was for her and she eventually became Matron of one of the hospitals in Perth. When I

asked Jo her hobbies, Jo said that Mary loved Opera and up until very recently attended many, many performances

throughout the years. Apart from Opera, then bridge came next and both Meryl and Jo had been bridge partners of

Mary. Jo was still playing with her until she passed away. Mary had a quiet, private, memorial service but we hope this

demonstrates the respect and love that the South Perth Bridge Club members had for her.

DIRECTOR’S CORNER

Did you know? No player is permitted to touch another player’s cards during or after play except by

permission of the director. (except that declarer may play dummy’s cards if necessary).

If the player entering details into the Bridgemate needs to know what the lead was, please ask the player who made

the lead. You may not turn up his card to look at it.

If you wish to check if another player has revoked, or where a revoke occurred, call the director. Do not attempt to

find which of the cards played was a revoke by turning up another player’s cards.

Following on from this law, is another law which says that after play has finished a hand cannot be removed from the

board unless a player from each side or the director is present. This means you may not sit at a table at tea break and

take cards out of a board you have just played in order to discuss the hand with your partner. Instead, mark on your

personal scorer that you plan to discuss the hand at the end of the day.

TEAMS EVENTS

The combined South Perth and Melville Masters in Teams of Three event was held at South Perth on 9th October. The

sixteen teams were directed by David Burn who directed the same event last year at Melville and once again did a

superb job. This event is aimed at providing a friendly and supportive introduction to teams for players who have

never played in teams before and those with little experience of teams. Team members were very appreciative of

advice offered by the Masters, and everyone had a most enjoyable afternoon. There was a delicious afternoon tea

and nibbles after the game, so many stayed to enjoy a drink and companionship.

The winning eligible team was Ros Warnock’s team with Claire Weston, Cheryl Harding and Marsha Hopkins. In

second place was Martin Cleeve’s team with Sarita Singh, Alfred Leung and Mark Hughes. Congratulations to our

Team of Twelve who competed against Melville at their clubhouse on the same afternoon and were successful. The

team included Dave Munro (captain), Doreen Jones, Richard and Sue Grenside, Valerie Isle, Liz McNeill, Helen

Arendts, Jackin Clare, Garth Scotford, Cherry Zamudio, Patricia Hunter, and Carol Newport.

.A reminder that our Club enters five teams in the BAWA Inter-Club Teams championships each year. There are three

levels of competition, so there is a level for everyone. If you are keen to experience teams and compete against other

clubs, please contact the Teams Coordinator early in the new year.

Our Intermediate teams both finished 3rd, and narrowly missed the play-offs. The Novice teams had mixed results

– Novice A finished 3rd, but unfortunately, our Novice B team didn’t win many matches. Still they tried, and can

only improve by playing in these competitions.

I would like to thank the following members who participated throughout the year.

Novice – Don Moran, Bob Mitchell, Wilma Coloper, Jenny Simpson, Nola Anderson, Liz Farr, Helen Lewis, Jan

Annear, Caroline McCusker, Penny Fayle, Jenny Brown, Jackie & Matthew Wilding, Sarita Singh, Alfred Leung,

playing. Unfortunately, there were some who missed out – but they were not available when contacted.

I am resigning as club captain from December this year – and would like to hear from anyone who would be keen

to take on this role. It does involve a bit of emailing and scheduling (so as not to interfere with any club events). If

anyone is happy to take on this role, could they contact me – either by email ([email protected]) or

mobile (0422 918 878) as soon as possible. I will be happy to provide details of what is involved.

BRIDGE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD IN WROCLAW, POLAND

Controversy surrounded the final placings in the ‘Olympic Games of Bridge” World Championships, held in Wroclaw recently. At the end of the final round the pair from Germany Auken and Welland were awarded 1st place and the Gold Medal and the New Zealanders pair Ash Bach and Michael Cornell came second. Subsequently it was revealed that Bach and Cornell had not adequately checked the final scores after the last round and it was they in fact who had won the competition. As all bridge players know there is a time scale in which to lodge an objection, but this was not adhered to and the scoring hitch lay uncovered until the following day. Human errors, whether by competitors, referees, Judges or otherwise are an integral part of any sporting competition. It is important to have certainty of the result that has been obtained according to the respective rules and regulations that are applied and cannot be modified, despite unfortunately, that they have influenced the result. However, the Executive Council of Bridge considered the peculiarity of the circumstances and the facts of these particular two cases and has expressed its view that the truth cannot and should not be ignored. Consequent upon the advice received from the High Level Players Commission, the Executive Council has exceptionally resolved to award the titles and the gold medals and the master points to both the German Pair and the New Zealand Pair without further alteration of the ranking lists.

Ash Bach and Michael Cornell who have played together for eleven years, were interviewed after the findings and felt it was absolutely fair to be joint winners with the German pair. The New Zealanders both began playing bridge at an early age. They had never previously qualified for the knock out stages in 45 years of trying. While Bach described bridge as a series of never ending puzzles and challenges, Cornell compared the game to rugby!! He says, “The top five eighths in the world for example are completely natural. They’re light on their feet and they instinctively know what they are doing. I don’t know any top bridge player that doesn’t have natural card sense” said Cornell.

BUSY BEE DELI Jan has reported that Members will be delighted to hear that the Deli across the road from the Club will be re-opening in a fortnight’s time, thirteen months after the fire which destroyed the building, which was created by an arson attack. The Deli owner will be very appreciative of the support of Club Members and will have a great range of food for lunches, so come to bridge early, buy your lunch from across the road and enjoy it with your friends! We hope that our support, may, in some small way, help to begin the process of restoring the customer clientele of the business.
