Thank you for purchasing the Traxxas E-Maxx, and congrat-ulations on owning what we believe is the most advanced, mostpowerful electric monster truck available. This sophisticatedtruck incorporates many special features including 4 wheeldrive, shift on the fly two-speed transmission, twin Titan 550motors, and the powerful EVX electronic speed control. Important Points to Remember The truck is not intended for use on public roads orcongested areas where its operation can conflict with ordisrupt pedestrian or vehicular traffic.

Never, under any circumstances, operate the truck in crowdsof people. The truck is very fast and could cause injury ifallowed to collide with anyone.

Because the truck is controlled by radio, it is subject to radiointerference from many sources that are beyond yourcontrol. Since radio interference can cause momentarylosses of radio control, always allow a safety margin in alldirections around the model in order to prevent collisions.

The motors, batteries, and speed control can become hotduring use. Be careful to avoid getting burned.

Don’t operate your E-Maxx at night, or anytime your line ofsight to the model may be obstructed or impaired in any way.

The tires on your E-Maxx must be glued to the rims using CAtire glue to prevent the rims from spinning inside the tires. Youcan glue the tires without removing the wheels from the truck.For clarity, these instructions show the process with the wheelsremoved.

1. Remove a wheel from theE-Maxx using the larger(8mm) end of the glow plug(universal) wrench.

2. Use your thumb to push theside of the tire away from therim. Place one or two drops ofCA glue into the opening andrelease the tire. Capillaryaction will draw the gluearound the bead of the tire.

3. Repeat step two at four or five points around the rim, until thetire is completely secured to the rim. Turn the rim over andrepeat the process for the inside of the rim/tire. Repeat for theother 3 wheels.

4. Reinstall the wheels, makingsure none of the axle pinshave fallen out from behindthe hex hubs.

Always wear safetyglasses to preventglue from splattering

into your eyes.

The acetone infingernail polishremover will

Decorating Your E-Maxx

Applying The Decals

The ProGraphix paintedbody is covered with aprotective film for shipping.You must remove this filmbefore applying any decals.

To remove the film, lift acorner of the film andcarefully pull it off the bodyin one continuous piece.

Your E-Maxx decals are die-cut for easy removal. Use ahobby knife to lift thecorner of a decal and lift itfrom the backing.

Carefully position the decalover the desired locationand press one side on thebody. Pull the decal tightand use a finger to graduallysmooth out any air bubblesas you apply the decal.

Look at the photos on the box for typical decal placement.

Your E-Maxx (model 3906) is equipped with the TQ-3 RadioSystem. The TQ-3 is a 3-channel system that provides high-poweroutput up to a quarter mile and control for up to three servos.The E-Maxx uses two servos and an electronic speed control.

Radio System TerminologyPlease take a moment to familiarize yourself with these radio-system terms. They will be used throughout this manual.

Channel - The 27 MHz frequency band is divided into 6channels so that up to six models can be operatedsimultaneously. Each channel is referred to by its flag color andchannel number, as shown below.

Clearing your frequency - A routine, verbal check to make surenobody else in your area is operating on the same channel.Always clear your frequency by calling out your channelnumber before operating your model. Wait or move toanother area if your channel is already being used.

Crystal (X-tal) - The plug-in device that determines whichchannel the radio system will operate on. For each channel,there are two crystals, one for the receiver and one for thetransmitter. Of those two crystals, the one marked with thelower number (.455 MHz lower) must be inserted into thereceiver.

ESC (Electronic Speed Control) - An electronic speed control isthe electronic motor control inside the model. An ESC usesMOSFET power transistors to provide precise, digitalproportional throttle and braking control. Electronic speedcontrols use power more efficiently than mechanical speed

controls so that the batteries run longer. An electronic speedcontrol also has circuitry that prevents loss of steering andthrottle control as the batteries lose their charge.

Frequency band - The radio frequency used by the transmitterto send signals to your E-Maxx. All Traxxas RTR models operateon a 27 MHz frequency band.

Neutral position - The standing position that the servos seekwhen the transmitter controls are at the neutral setting.

NiCad - Refers to rechargeable, nickel-cadmium batteries. Themost economical choice, since they may be recharged up to500 times.

Receiver - The radio unit inside your E-Maxx that receivessignals from the transmitter and relays them to the servos.

Servos - Small motor units in your E-Maxx that operate theshifting and steering mechanisms.

Three-channel radio system - The TQ-3 radio system,consisting of the receiver, the transmitter, and the servos. Thesystem uses three channels: one to operate the steering, oneto operate the ESC (throttle/brakes) and a third channel tocontrol shifting.

Transmitter - The hand-held radio unit that sends throttle andsteering instructions to your E-Maxx.

Trim - The fine-tuning adjustment of the neutral position of theservos, made by turning the throttle and steering trim knobson the face of the transmitter.

BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) - The BEC can either be in thereceiver or in the ESC. This circuit allows the receiver andservos to be powered by the main battery pack in an electricmodel. This eliminates the need to carry a separate pack of 4AA batteries to power the radio equipment.

Smart Braking™ - Trademark name for technology developedby Novak Electronics that allows the same throttle triggermotion to control both braking and reverse functions. The EVXspeed control senses how fast the model is running andapplies the brakes to slow the model. Once stopped, reverse isapplied.

2. Install the batteries in the correct orientation asindicated in the battery compartment.

3. Reinstall the battery door and snap it closed.

4. Turn on the transmitter and check the power indicatorfor a solid red light.

If the power indicator light flashes, then the transmitterbatteries are weak, discharged or possibly installedincorrectly. Replace with new or freshly charged batteries.The power indicator light does not indicate the charge levelof the receiver batteries in the model.

Use the Right BatteriesYour transmitter uses AAbatteries. Use new alkalinebatteries, or rechargeablebatteries such as NiCad or Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride)batteries in your transmitter.Make sure rechargeablebatteries are fully chargedaccording to themanufacturer’s instructions.

If you use rechargeable batteries in your transmitter, beaware that when they begin tolose their charge, they losepower much more quickly thanregular alkaline batteries. Caution: Discontinue runningyour E-Maxx at the first sign ofweak batteries (flashing redlight) to avoid losing control.

If the power indicatordoesn’t light red, checkthe polarity of the

batteries. Check rechargeablebatteries for a full charge.

Thermal Shutdown Protection – Temperature sensingelectronics are used in the ESC to detect overloading andoverheating of the transistor circuitry. If excessive temperatureis detected, the unit automatically shuts down to preventdamage to the electronics.

One-Touch Setup™ - Novak Electronics trademark name forcircuitry inside the EVX electronic speed control that allows itto adjust to the transmitter settings by pressing a button onthe speed control and operating the transmitter controls (seepage 26 for instructions).

Polar Drive Circuitry™ - Trademark name for technologydeveloped by Novak Electronics that allows the EVX speedcontrol to operate more efficiently at part throttle, andrecharge the batteries during braking (regenerative braking).This results in cooler running, increased power handling, andlonger run times.

Installing Transmitter BatteriesYour TQ-3 transmitter uses 8 AA batteries. The batterycompartment is located at the base of the transmitter.

Installing Battery PacksThe E-Maxx requires two fully charged 7.2 volt NiCd or NiMHbattery packs. Do not run the E-Maxx with just one battery.These batteries are not included with the model. You can useeither side-by-side racing style packs or the more common stickpacks. The battery compartments on the E-Maxx are designed tohandle both. The E-Maxx’s run time is greatly affected by themilliamp hour (mAh) rating of the batteries. A 3000 mAh batterypack will theoretically run twice as long as a 1500 mAh sportpack. Follow the charger manufacturer’s directions for chargingand caring for your battery packs.

The battery compartments are configured for stick packs fromthe factory. If you are using side-by-side racing packs, then youwill need to reconfigure the battery hold downs as shown:

Stick packs1. Remove the body clip securing the battery hold down. Lift

the end of the hold down and swing it out.

2. Slide the battery pack in place. Swing the hold down back inand over the post.

3. Secure it with the body clip. Use the upper hole in the post.Repeat for the other pack.

Side-by-side packsWhen using side-by-side packs, the battery retainer must becompletely removed and flipped over.

1. Remove the shoulder screw which acts as the hinge for thebattery retainer. Replace the shoulder screw with thesupplied metal post (found in your instruction manualpacket).

2. Install the batteries in the compartment and then place thebattery hold down over the posts with the flat side facing up.

3. Secure the battery hold down with body clips in the lowerholes in the posts.

Use the Right ChargerThe most convenient

type of charger is an ACpeak-detecting charger thatplugs directly into an AC walloutlet. It contains specialpeak-detection circuitry thatautomatically shuts thecharger off when the batteryis fully charged.

If you’re using a 15-minutetimed charger, always fullydischarge the battery packbefore each charge. Somehigh mAh battery packs(1500 mAh or higher) requiremore than the standard 15minutes of charge time. If thebattery pack is cold after 15minutes of charging, addanother 5 minutes of chargetime. Closely monitor thebattery pack and stopcharging it when it begins tofeel warm to the touch. Neverleave a battery chargingunattended. Always followcharger manufacturer’sinstructions.

If the radio systemdoesn’t appear towork when the

transmitter and modelswitches are turned on, check for correct batteryinstallation.

Spray a little windowcleaner on theantenna wire to

make it easier to pushthrough the antenna tube.

Don’t shorten thelength of theantenna wire. Its

length is tuned to thefrequency band; cutting itcould severely shorten theradio system’s range.

Don’t push thetransmitter antennadown from the top.

Pull it down from thebottom, one segment at atime, to prevent binding andkinking the antenna mast.

Setting Up the AntennaYou must install the antenna mast (tube) before you operateyour E-Maxx. You’ll find the plastic antenna tube and tip in thebag with your manuals and documentation.

1. Locate the black antenna wire that exits the receiver. TheE-Maxx receiver is mounted in the front of the chassis.

2. Pull the wire straight with your fingers and then insert theend of the wire into one end of the antenna tube. Push thewire all the way through the antenna tube.

3. Pull the remaining wire through the antenna tube, and theninsert the base of the antenna tube into the molded post onthe chassis.

4. Fold the remaining antenna wire over the top of the tubeand secure it with the antenna tip.

5. On the transmitter, always fully extend the telescopingantenna when running your E-Maxx. Make a habit of holding the transmitter so that the antenna points straight up.

ShiftingWhen the shift button on the handle is in the up position theE-Maxx is in low gear. Normal operation is to start off in low gearand when maximum motor RPM is reached, push the buttondown to select high gear and continue accelerating. In order forthe transmission to shift, the throttle must be releasedmomentarily to take the load off of the transmission. This isnecessary since the transmission does not use a clutch. You maydownshift from high to low gear at any time. Oftendownshifting serves as effective braking. The throttle mustmomentarily be released to allow the transmission to downshiftas well.

Use common sense to protect the inner workings of yourtransmission. Don’t try to shift from high to low while at thesame time switching from forward to reverse. Performing onlyone operation at a time will reduce the chance of damagingyour transmission.When changing from reverse to forward, there is no delay. Avoiddoing reverse to forward "slams." Continuous abuse of this typecould result in damage to your speed control or transmission.

TQ-3 Radio System AdjustmentsIn addition to the electronic throttle and steering trim controls,your radio system features throttle neutral adjustment andservo reversing switches.

Throttle Neutral AdjustmentThe throttle neutral adjustment is located on the transmitterface and controls the forward/brake travel of the throttletrigger. Change the adjustment by pressing the button andsliding it to the desired position. There are two settingsavailable:

50/50: Allows equal travel for both acceleration and braking.70/30: Allows more throttle travel (70%) and less

brake travel (30%).

50/50 is the recommended setting for the E-Maxx.

Electronic Throttle TrimThe electronic throttle trim located on the face of thetransmitter adjusts the neutral (center) point of the throttletrigger signal to the electronic speed control. This control hasbeen preset for you at the factory. If the motors run when thetruck (EVX) is switched on, then turn the throttle trim control onthe transmitter until the wheels stop. If anything more than aslight adjustment of the throttle trim control is required, thenyou should readjust your speed control. Refer to theAdjustments section on pages 25 and 26.

Electronic Steering TrimThe electronic steering trim located on the face of thetransmitter adjusts the neutral (center) point of the steeringservo when the servo is at rest. Adjust this control to make themodel drive straight with no steering input at the wheel.

Servo Reversing SwitchesOn the front of the transmitter there are three switches, one forthrottle, one for steering, and one for shifting. Moving theswitches reverses the direction of the servo. For example, if youturn your steering wheel right and the model moves left, thenswitch the steering servo reversing switch to correct the servodirection. The electronic trim may need readjustment aftermoving the switches.

TQ-3 Radio System RulesEach time you prepare to run yourE-Maxx, you must clear your frequencyto be sure no one else in the area isusing the same channel as you.

There are six possible channels,numbered 1 through 6. Each isrepresented by a color. Look at thecrystal plugged into the back of yourtransmitter to determine which channelyour truck is assigned to.

Always turn your TQ-3 transmitter on first and off last. Thisprocedure will help to prevent your E-Maxx from receivingstray signals from another transmitter, or other source, andrunning out of control.

Always have the transmitter turned on before you plug inthe battery packs in the model.

Always use new or freshly charged batteries for the radiosystem. Weak batteries will limit the range of the radio signalbetween the receiver and the transmitter. Loss of the radiosignal can cause you to lose control of your E-Maxx.

The Traxxas TQ-3 Radio System

Using the TQ-3 Radio SystemThe TQ-3 Radio System was pre-adjusted at the factory. Theadjustment should be checked, before running the model, incase of movement during shipping. Here’s how:

1. Fully extend the chrome antenna mast on the transmitterand turn the switch on. The red indicator light on thetransmitter should be solid red (not flashing).

2. Plug the NiCd batteries in the model into the electronicspeed control.

3. Elevate the E-Maxx so that all four tires are off the ground. Ifyou are holding the E-Maxx, grip it firmly. Make sure yourhands are are clear of the moving parts of the E-Maxx.

4. Move the switch in the E-Maxx to the “ON” position. The servoand speed control should jump and move to their idle(neutral) position. The motors may run momentarily, causingthe E-Maxx to lurch.

5. Turn the steering wheel on the transmitter back and forthand check for rapid operation of the steering servo. Also,check that the steering mechanism is not loose or binding. Ifthe steering operates slowly, check for weak batteries.

6. When looking down at model, the front wheels should bepointing straight ahead. If the wheels are turned slightly tothe left or right, slowly adjust the steering trim control on thetransmitter until they are pointing straight ahead.

7. Operate the throttle trigger to ensure that you have fullforward and reverse operation, and that the motor stopswhen the throttle trigger is at neutral.

8. Operate the shift button on the transmitter and check forrapid operation of the shifting servo. Push the shift button upfor first gear; the servo will pull the shift rod out of thetransmission. Push the shift button down for second gear; theservo will push the shift rod into the transmission.

9. Once adjustments are made, turn off the switch on yourE-Maxx, followed by the handheld transmitter.

Range-Testing the TQ-3 Radio SystemBefore each running session with your E-Maxx, you should range-test your radio system to ensure that it operates properly.

1. Turn on the radio system and check its operation as describedin the previous section (Using Your Radio System, pages 18-19).

2. Have a friend hold the model. Make sure hands and clothing areclear of the wheels and other moving parts on the E-Maxx.

3. Make sure your transmitter antenna is fully extended, and thenwalk away from the model with the transmitter until you reachthe farthest distance you plan to operate the model.

4. Operate the controls on the transmitter once again to be surethat the model responds correctly.

5. Do not attempt to operate the model if there is any problemwith the radio system or any external interference with yourradio signal at your location.

Driving the E-MaxxNow it’s time to have some fun!This section containsinstructions on driving andmaking adjustments to yourE-Maxx. Before you go on,here are some importantprecautions to keep in mind.

Allow the E-Maxx tocool for a few minutesbetween runs.The radio system is not waterproof. Avoid driving throughpuddles or mud. If water gets into the electronics it coulddamage them.Do not continue to operate the truck with low batteries oryou could lose control of it. Indications of low battery powerinclude slow operation and sluggish servos (slow to returnto center). Stop immediately at the first sign of weakbatteries. When the batteries in the transmitter becomeweak, the red power light will begin to flash. Stopimmediately and install new batteries.Do not drive the truck at night, on public streets, or in largecrowds of people.If the truck becomes stuck against an object, do notcontinue to run the motors. Remove the obstruction beforecontinuing. Do not push or pull objects with the E-Maxx.Because the E-Maxx is controlled by radio, it is subject toradio interference from many sources beyond your control.Since radio interference can cause momentary losses ofcontrol, allow a safety margin of space in all directionsaround the truck in order to prevent collisions.Use good, common sense whenever you are driving yourtruck. Intentionally driving in an abusive and rough mannerwill only result in poor performance and broken parts. Takecare of your E-Maxx so that you can enjoy it for a long timeto come.

Driving TipsMonster trucks by design have a high center of gravity thatrequires a different driving technique. To prevent rollovers,slow down as you approach turns and then apply strong

throttle through the turns. This technique will help theE-Maxx grab the surface and turn sharper.When jumping the E-Maxx, make sure to release the throttlejust before the wheels contact the ground. Holding thethrottle wide open as the truck lands could damagetransmission and driveline components. Do not shift thetransmission while the truck is in the air.Drive over large obstacles (such as curbs and rocks) at anangle, instead of head on. This will allow the suspension toarticulate and absorb the impact much easier.

About Run TimeThe E-Maxx is able to achieve long run times due to the greaterefficiency of the high voltage electrical system. A large factoraffecting run time is the type and condition of your batteries.The milliamp hour (mAh) rating of the batteries determines howlarge their “fuel tank” is. A 3000 mAh battery pack willtheoretically run twice as long as a 1500 mAh sport pack.Because of the wide variation in the types of batteries that areavailable and the methods with which they can be charged, it’simpossible for us to give you exact run times for the E-Maxx.Another major factor which affects run time is how the E-Maxxis driven. Our experience has shown that the run times areshorter when the truck is driven continuously, in high gear, attop speeds. In off-road situations with lower speeds and mostlylow gear usage, expect much longer run times.

Tips for Increasing Run TimeUse batteries with the highest mAh rating you can purchase.Use a high-quality peak-detecting charger.Discharge the batteries completely after each run.Vary your speed. Continuous high-speed, high-gear runningshortens the run time on the E-Maxx.Maintain your E-Maxx. Do not allow dirt or damaged parts tocause binding in the drivetrain. Keep the motors clean andthe motor bushings lightly lubricated.

Once you become familiar with driving your E-Maxx, you mightneed to make adjustments for better driving performance.

Adjusting the Slipper ClutchThe E-Maxx is equipped with an adjustable slipper clutch toprotect the drivetrain from sudden shock loads (such as landingoff of jumps with the motors at full throttle). Under normalconditions, the slipper clutch should not slip. Before adjustingthe slipper clutch, turn the radio system off and unplug thebatteries in the E-Maxx. If the motors turned while theadjustment wrench is inserted, you could be injured. Do nottouch the 3 metal heatsinks on the electronic speed controltogether with any metal object or tool when the speed controlis turned on! This could damage the speed control. Use thesupplied universal wrench to tighten the slipper nut (clockwise)until it stops and then back the adjustment out 1/4 of a turn.Youcan make this adjustment without removing the gear cover,instead removing only the rubber plug in the center of the gearcover. If you notice any decrease in the E-Maxx’s performancewhile making changes to the slipper clutch adjustment, then itmay be too loose. The slipper must not be allowed to slip duringnormal acceleration or the slipper could be damaged.

Adjusting the Toe-inYour E-Maxx comes fromthe factory with zerodegrees of toe-in in thefront, and one degree oftoe-in in the rear.You canadjust the toe-in on thefront and rear of the truck.Set the steering trim onyour transmitter to neutral.Now, adjust your steeringturnbuckles so that bothfront wheels are pointingstraight ahead and are

parallel to each other (0 degrees toe-in). This will ensure thesame amount of steering in both directions. Adjust the rear toecontrol links so that the rear wheels have 1˚ of toe-in.

Adjusting the CamberTwo pivot balls are accessible through thespokes of each of the wheels on yourE-Maxx. From the factory, the pivot balls arecompletely tightened into the suspensionarms, which give each of the wheels –1˚ ofcamber. Unscrewing the bottom camberpivot ball with a 2.5mm hex wrench will increase the wheel’snegative camber.You should not adjust the top pivot ball;unscrewing it will increase positive camber and will also changethe wheel’s toe-in.

Adjusting the suspensionThe E-Maxx has adjustable suspension sothat it may be optimized for differentkinds of terrain and driving styles.

Fine Tuning the ShocksThe eight shocks (oil dampers) on yourE-Maxx have tremendous influence on itshandling. Whenever you rebuild yourshocks, or make any changes to thepistons, springs or oil, always do itcarefully and in sets (front or rear). Pistonhead selection depends on the range ofoil viscosities that you have available. Forexample, using a two-hole piston withlightweight oil will give you the samedamping as a three-hole piston withheavier oil. We recommend using two-hole pistons with a rangeof oil viscosities from 10W to 40W (available from your hobbyshop). The thinner viscosity oils (30W or less) flow with lessresistance and provide less damping, while thicker oils providemore dampening. Use only 100% pure silicone shock oil toprolong seal life. From the factory, the E-Maxx uses 30W oil.22

The ride height for the E-Maxx can be adjusted by adding orremoving the clip-on spring pre-load spacers. Note that changesin ride height will occur when changes in shock angle or springrates are made.You can compensate for ride height changes bychanging the pre-load spacers on the shocks

Motors and GearingThe Titan™ 550 Motors on your E-Maxx have been carefullydesigned to match the needs of the E-Maxx. The Titans are madeto run efficiently at high voltage to provide more torque andlonger run times. We do not recommend converting theE-Maxx to a typical low voltage setup using traditional 540size motors. While these components will physically fit into theE-Maxx, the system will not run as efficiently, losing power in theform of motor and battery heating. The result will be shorter runtimes, high current draw, and extreme battery and motortemperatures. If you are considering replacement motors, lookfor 550 motors capable of 12 or more volts.

The E-Maxx is equipped from the factory with a 66-tooth spurgear and 18-tooth pinion gears. E-Maxx has a large range ofgearing making it suitable for many different types ofapplications and environments. If you want more accelerationand less top speed, use a smaller pinion gear (fewer teeth, highernumerical ratio). For more top speed, use a larger pinion gear(lower numerical ratio). The overall reduction is the number ofturns the motor makes for one revolution of the tire. Highernumerical ratios provide more torque, lower numerical ratiosprovide more top speed. With the Titan motors, do not use apinion gear larger than 20-tooth with the stock 66-tooth spurgear or, do not go lower numerically than 16.1 to 1 gear ratioin high gear.

Caster AdjustmentThe E-Maxx offers the ability to adjust the caster angle of thefront suspension. Caster adjustment may be used to influencethe understeer/ oversteer handling characteristics of the E-Maxx.Increasing the caster angle will increase the tendency of thetruck to oversteer (less traction on the rear tires, more traction onthe front tires), while decreasing the caster angle will cause thetruck to have a tendency to understeer (push in the turns). Thiseffect becomes more pronounced at higher steering angles and

higher spring rates. Caster is adjusted by repositioning the shimson the pivot point of the upper suspension arms.The stock caster setting is 7-degrees with one shim at each endof the arm. Reduce the caster angle to 4-degrees by removingthe rear shim and inserting it next to the front shim. The casterangle can be increased to 10-degrees by removing the frontshim and inserting it next to the rear shim.

Shock Mounting PositionsBig bumps and rough terrain require a softer suspension withthe maximum possible suspension travel and ride height. Racingon a prepared track or on-road use requires a lower ride heightand firmer, more progressive suspension settings. The moreprogressive suspension settings help reduce body roll (increasedroll stiffness), dive during braking, and squat during acceleration.Upper shock mounting position (A) should generally be usedwith lower shock mountingpositions 1 and 2. Upper shockmounting position (B) should begenerally be used with lowershock mounting positions 3 and4. The innermost upper shockmounting position (0) can beused for tuning with the innerpair of lower shock mountingpositions on the arm (1,2). It isnot compatible with lowershock mounting positions 3 and4. Other combinations may beused to achieve individualizedsuspension settings.

Adjusting Your E-Maxx

Lower Shock Mounting Positions In the out-of-the-box configuration, the shocks are installed inposition (A) on the shock tower and position (2) on the lowersuspension arm. This setting allows for moderate suspensiontravel and ride height. The more vertical position of the shocksallows for lower shock progression and the soft, plush feel that’scharacteristic of a Traxxas Maxx Truck.

The outer pair of holes on the lower suspension arm should beused to lower the ride height of the E-Maxx, and increase thespring force (at the wheel). This setting will improve high-speedcornering on smoother terrain by lowering the center of gravityand providing a firmer suspension feel. Body roll, brake dive, andsquat will be reduced.

Spring rate (at the wheel) increases as the lower shock mountingposition is moved from position (1) to position (4). This isequivalent to using stiffer springs. Use higher spring rate settingsfor flatter terrain with smaller and fewer bumps, and lower springrate settings for bigger bumps.

Ride height decreases as the lower shock mounting position ismoved from position (1) to position (4). Each pair of lower shockmounting holes (1,2 and 3,4) has equal ride height. Use lower rideheight for high-speed cornering and flat terrain, and when racingon relatively smooth tracks. Increase the ride height for rougherterrain and tracks.

Upper Shock Mounting Positions The upper shock mounting positions will have suspension effectsopposite from the lower shock mounting positions.

Spring rate (at the wheel), increases as the upper shockmounting position is moved from position (A) to position (B).

Ride height is not affected by changes in the upper shockmounting position.

Use the chart below to see the effect of the various shockmounting positions. The horizontal length of the lines indicatesthe amount of suspension travel. The angle or slope of the linesindicates the spring rate (at the wheel).

Adjusting the Speed ControlThe EVX electronic speed control installed in your E-Maxx hasbeen factory set and should not require any adjustments. TheEVX is a reliable and rugged reversible speed control for use withtwo 6 or 7-cell battery packs and the stock Traxxas E-Maxxmotors.

The EVX has three user-selectable throttle profiles:Profile #1: Forward with brakes and reverse: Novak’s SmartBraking™ Circuitry brings the model to a slow speed beforeengaging reverse to save your vehicle’s gearbox and reducespeed control heating. Forward and reverse are proportional.Profile #2: Forward-only with brakes: Novak’s Reverse DisableCircuitry locks-out reverse for forward-only or racing use. Brakesare enabled.Profile #3: Forward with 25% reverse: For applications wherereduced speed in the reverse direction is desirable.

PrecautionsFollow these extra safety precautions for your protection and toensure long life for the EVX speed control.

Water and electronics don’t mix! Do not operate model in oraround water. Never allow water, moisture, or other foreignmaterials to get inside the speed control.Disconnect the batteries. Always disconnect the batterypack from the speed control when not in use.Transmitter on first. Turn on your transmitter before thespeed control so you will have control of the radioequipment.Don’t get burned! The transistor tabs and the heat sinks can

get extremely hot, so be careful not to touch them until theycool. Supply adequate airflow for cooling.Always use heat sinks. Three heat sinks are factory-installedon the speed control and must be used for maximum coolingand performance.

These additional precautions apply if the stock E-Maxx ismodified in the future. Please be aware that damage to thespeed control caused by modification of the E-Maxx or EVX willnot be covered by the warranty. This includes changing theconnectors.

Use stock connectors. If you decide to change the battery ormotor connectors, only change one battery or motorconnector at a time. This will prevent accidentally mis-wiringthe speed control. If the EVX is not wired exactly as shown inthe diagram, it can be damaged!Use neutrally timed motors. The motors installed in theE-Maxx are neutrally timed. If you replace the motors, themotors must have 0° timing. Modified motors (with adjustableend bells) timed to 0° or Johnson/ Mabuchi (closed end bell)motors are recommended. Using motors with other than 0°timing will draw excess current in reverse, causing the speedcontrol to overheat and premature motor wear.Motor capacitors required! If the factory installed stockmotors are replaced, three 0.1µF (50V) ceramic capacitorsshould be properly installed on every motor to prevent radiointerference. These capacitors are available from your hobbydealer (Novak Kit #5620).No reverse voltage! The speed control is not protectedagainst reverse polarity voltage. If changing the batteryand/or motor, be sure to install the same type of connectorsto avoid damage to the speed control. Removing the batteryconnectors on the speed control or using the same-genderconnectors on the speed control will void the product’swarranty.Don’t let the transistor tabs touch! Never allow thethree separate transistor banks to touch each other or anyexposed metal. This will create a short circuit and damage thespeed control.Insulate the wires. Always insulate exposed wiring with heatshrink tubing to prevent short circuits.

Transmitter Adjustments for the EVX (TQ-3)Before attempting to program your EVX, it is important to makesure that your transmitter is properly adjusted (set back to thefactory defaults). Otherwise, you may not get the bestperformance from your speed control.

The Traxxas TQ-3 transmitter should be adjusted as follows:1. Set the Throttle Neutral switch to the 50/50 setting. This

adjusts the transmitter’s throttle trigger throw to 1/2 throttleand 1/2 brake/reverse.

2. Set the Throttle Trim to the middle “0” setting. This adjusts theneutral position of the throttle servo.

3. Set the Channel 1 Servo Reversing Switch to the left position.

4. Set the Channel 2 Servo Reversing Switch to the right position.

5. Set the Channel 3 Servo Reversing Switch to the right position.

6. Do not change the position of any of the servo reversingswitches after programming the EVX.

Speed Control ProgrammingTo program the speed control, it should be connected to thereceiver, and the transmitter should be adjusted as described inthe previous section.

1. Disconnect the motors from the speed control.

2. Connect two fully charged battery packs to the speed control.Connect one JST plug (RED & BLACK wires) to one batterypack. Connect the other JST plug to the other battery pack.

3. Turn on the transmitter.

4. Turn on the speed control.

5. With the transmitter throttle at neutral, press and hold theESC SET button until the status LED turns solid red, and thenrelease the button. You are now in programming mode.

6. Pull the transmitter throttle trigger to the full throttleposition. Hold it there until the status LED turns solid green.Note: The motors will not run during programming even ifthey are connected to the speed control.

7. Push the transmitter throttle trigger to full reverse. Hold itthere until the status LED blinks green.

8. Release the transmitter throttle trigger allowing it to return toneutral. The status LED will turn solid red, indicating that thethrottle is at neutral and the programming has beencompleted.

9. Connect the motors to the speed control. Connect the redspeed control wires to motor’s red positive (+) leads. Connectthe black speed control wires to motor’s negative (-) leads.Make sure the bullet connectors snap together securely. Referto the wiring diagram on page 25 for assistance.

The EVX speed control is now programmed & ready to go!If the transmitter settings are changed, it will be necessary tocomplete the programming sequence again.If the SET button is released before the LED turns solid red instep 5, the LED will blink 7 times and then return to thenormal operation mode.If you experience any problems during programming, turnoff the speed control and repeat the programming steps.

Speed Control Throttle Profile SelectionThe speed control is factory set to Profile #1(forward/reverse/brake operation). To disable the reverse (Profile#2), or reduce the reverse speed to 25% (Profile #3), follow thesesteps. The speed control should be connected to the receiverand the transmitter adjusted as described above.

Adjusting Your E-Maxx

Using an AftermarketTransmitter with the EVX.The following instructions areprovided as reference only forthose who are using anaftermarket transmitter in placeof their factory TQ-3.

1. Set the High ATV or EPA tothe maximum setting. This isthe amount of servo throw atfull throttle.

2. Set the Low ATV, EPA, or ATLto the maximum setting. Thisis the amount of servo throwat full brakes.

3. Set the Exponential to thezero setting. This adjusts thethrottle channel linearity.

4. Set the Throttle Channel Trimto the middle setting. Thisadjusts the neutral positionand increases or decreasesthe amount of coast braking.

5. Set the Throttle ChannelReversing Switch to eitherposition. Do not change theswitch position afterprogramming.

6. Set the Electronic TriggerThrow Adjustment to 50%throttle and 50% brake throw(or 5:5). This adjusts thetransmitter’s throttle triggerthrow on electronic/digitaltransmitters.

7. Set the Mechanical TriggerThrow Adjustment to aposition with 1/2 throttle and1/2 brake throw. This adjuststhe transmitter’s throttletrigger throw on mechanical/analog transmitters.

2. Turn on the transmitter.

3. Turn on the speed control.

4. Press and hold the ESC SET button until the status LED turnsfrom solid red to solid green. Immediately release the ESC SETbutton when it changes to green.

5. The LED will now flash red.The number of red flashesindicates the active throttle profile.

6. Press the ESC SET button to select the throttle profile. Eachpress will advance the setting to the next profile. Note: Tochange the profile you must press the ESC SET buttonimmediately after the LED flashes the current setting.Once the LED flashes the desired setting number, wait andthe LED will turn green and the EVX will exit theprogramming mode.

Denatured alcohol (available fromhome centers and

paint supply stores) in aspray bottle is an extremelyeffective cleaner. Be sure towear safety glasses andgloves when working withdenatured alcohol. Removethe radio system and ESCbefore cleaning withdenatured alcohol or othercleaners.

Always wear eyeprotection whenusing compressed air

or spray cleaners andlubricants.

Your E-Maxx requires timely maintenance in order to stay in toprunning condition.The following procedures should be takenvery seriously.

Inspect the vehicle for obvious damage or wear. Look for:1. Cracked, bent, or damaged parts 2. Check the wheels and steering for binding.3. Check the operation of the shock absorbers.4. Check the wiring for any frayed wires or loose connections.5. Check the tightness of the front pivot balls.6. Check the mounting of the receiver and servo and electronic

speed control.7. Check the tightness of the wheel nuts with a wrench.8. Check the operation of the radio system, especially the

condition of the batteries.9. Check for any loose screws in the chassis structure or

suspension.10. The steering servo saver will wear out over time. If the

steering becomes loose, the servo saver should be replaced.11. Inspect the gears for wear, broken teeth, or debris lodged

between the teeth.12. Check the tightness of the slipper clutch.

Other periodic maintenance:Slipper clutch pegs (frictionmaterial): The slipper clutchpegs will wear over time andrequire replacement. The lifeof the pegs depends on howthe slipper clutch wasadjusted and how theE-Maxx was used. If the slipper will not tighten or you areseeing signs of wear on the face of the gear, then the pegsshould be replaced.Chassis: Keep the chassis clean of accumulated dirt andgrime. Periodically inspect the chassis for damageSteering: Over time, you may notice increased looseness inthe steering system. There are several components which willwear out from use: the servo saver (Traxxas part#3744), thebellcrank bushings (Traxxas part #4943), and the tie rod ends(Traxxas part #2742). Replace these components as needed

to restore factory tolerances. The bellcrank bushings may bereplaced with 5x8mm ball bearings (Traxxas part #2728).Motors: Every 10-15 runs, remove, clean, and lubricate themotors. Use a product such as electric motor cleaning sprayto flush dirt out of the motors. After cleaning, lubricate thebushings at each end of the motor with a drop of light-weight electric motor oil.Shocks: Keep the oil level in the shocks full. Use only 100%pure silicon shock oil to prolong the life of the seals. If youare experiencing leakage around the top of the shock,inspect the bladder in the top cap for signs of damage ordistortion from overtightening. If the bottom of the shock isleaking, then it is time for a rebuild. The Traxxas rebuild kitfor two shocks is part#2362.Suspension: Periodically inspect the truck for signs ofdamage such as bent or dirty suspension pins, bentturnbuckles, loose screws, and any signs of stress or bending.Replace components as needed.Driveline: Inspect the driveline for signs of wear such asworn drive yokes, dirty axle half shafts, and any unusualnoise or binding. If a U-joint pops apart then it is time toreplace the part. Remove the gear cover and Inspect thespur gear for wear and check the tightness of grub screws inthe pinion gears. Tighten, clean, or replace components asneeded.

StorageWhen you are through running the E-Maxx for the day, blow itoff with compressed air or use a product such as denaturedalcohol to remove dirt and grime from the truck. When usingdenatured alcohol, unplug and remove the batteries. Be carefulnot to spray it directly on the electronic components or into themotors. Allow the E-Maxx to dry completely before recon-necting the batteries. Denatured alcohol is flammable andshould not be used where a spark may occur (such as in themotors or battery connectors).

Always disconnect and remove the batteries from the E-maxxwhenever the E-Maxx is stored. If the E-Maxx will be stored for along time, then also remove the batteries from the transmitter.The following section addresses some very basic ESC and radio

There you will find a much more extensive anddetailed online troubleshooting area. In addition, you may callTraxxas Customer Service at 1-888-TRAXXAS (outside the US call972-265-8000).

Radio system does not work properly:If the power light on the transmitter does not come on, checkfor proper battery installation and that the batteries are newand/or fully charged. If the power light is blinking, then thetransmitter batteries are weak and should be replaced. Seepage 13 for more details.If the transmitter light is on but the radio is still notresponding, check for proper installation of batteries in themodel and that the batteries are new and/or fully charged.Check to make sure the on/off switch on the model is in theon position. Check for damaged wires, a loose crystal, or looseconnections. See page 14 for more details.

Short radio range:If the radio range appears short, then first check to make surethe transmitter antenna is fully extended and that theantenna in the E- is in place and has not been cut ordamaged. Next, make sure the batteries are all fully charged.Finally, if you are still experiencing short range, try a differentlocation. Sometimes there can be interference from varioussources that can cause your radio to malfunction.

Steering channel works but the motors will not runThe speed control has thermally shut down. Allow the speedcontrol to cool down. Use a milder motor or a smaller piniongear. Check the drive train for restrictions. Check the motorconnections. Check the motors.One motor is wired backwards. Check the wiring and correct.Make sure the speed control is plugged into the throttlechannel of the receiver. Check operation of the throttlechannel with a servo.Possible internal damage. Return the EVX to Traxxas for service.

EVX will not go into programming modeMake sure the EVX is plugged into channel 2 (the throttlechannel) on the receiver. If it is plugged into channel 3 or thebattery terminal, it will not go into programming mode.

Receiver glitches/throttle stutters during accelerationMotor capacitors broken or missing - Check & replacecapacitors.The receiver or antenna is too close to power wires or thebatteries.Bad connections - Check the wiring and connectors.Motor(s) worn - Replace the motors.Excessive current to motor - Use a milder motor or a smallerpinion gear.

Motor and steering servo do not workCheck the wires, radio system, crystals, battery and motorconnectors, and the battery packs.Possible internal damage. Return the EVX to Traxxas forservice.

Model runs slowly / slow accelerationCheck the motor and battery connectors.Bad battery or motor(s). Check the operation with knowngood batteries and motors.Incorrect transmitter or speed control adjustment. Refer to the “Transmitter Adjustment” and “Speed ControlProgramming” sections.

Motor runs backwardsBoth motors wired backwards - Check the wiring and correct.

ESC is melted or burned/ESC runs with the switch offInternal damage. Return the EVX to Traxxas for service.▼
