GUYRA GRASSFED BULL TRIAL

The bulls this year have without doubt been our best draft to come out of the Guyra Grassfed Bull Trial. In its fourth year, this bull trial is the only one in Australia with the Charolais breed and the performance in the paddock is reinforced by objective BREEDPLAN EBVs.

The aim of the Bull Trial is simple. Treat bulls from all vendors as one management group, which allows you the buyer to judge each bull on his merit, knowing they have all had the same feeding and management. All bulls are compatible and, if you purchase multiple bulls, are less likely to injure each other when you get them home.

We record bull weight, EMA and Fat scans upon entry into the trial program and again at the end to determine average daily gain, EMA gain and Fat Cover increases during the trial to give REAL WORLD meaning to the EBVs that are produced on each bull. This information is presented as a supplementary sheet.

BETTER VALUE CHAROLAIS BULLS

Better Value Charolais Bulls is a joint venture between Glenlea Charolais and Jackson Charolais.

The venture is managed by Roderick Binny, a second generation Charolais breeder with the Glenlea Stud which was originally developed in Tasmania. Roderick has 30 plus years of active involvement and experience in the Charolais business, producing and selling Charolais bulls and stud females with his father Robert Binny in Tasmania. Glenlea cattle have been the foundation of many studs from Bunbury in WA to Emerald in QLD.

The years growing up and learning about the business of breeding ‘performance bulls’ and backing that up with great service is the foundation of Better Value Bulls.

Associated with that has been the sourcing of genetics from North America and Europe and blending them into the Charolais we now call the Australian type suited to our environments and markets. Today the best genetics for Australian conditions and markets, in our view, are Australian bloodlines. Therefore, all of our Herd Sires are Australian bred bulls.

All of Glenlea’s genetics are foundation genetics from overseas imports adapted and selected over 40 years plus to produce a Charolais that has high growth rates on a medium frame score, extra yield and the ability to finish on grass pastures at domestic weights as well as Export. Glenlea genetics are a total outcross to most Northern NSW and QLD bloodlines and, as such, have phenotypical differences that enable our type of Charolais to fit every market at the top of processors payment grids.

The Better Value Bulls program is run over three properties, “Bierton” at Black Mountain NSW (between Armidale and Guyra), “Westbrook Station” (between Guyra and Inverell in NSW) and “Severn Fields” at Texas QLD. There are also plans to add a fourth property west of Roma QLD in 2013. The combined herds number over 600 females and producing bulls for cross breeding is our core business.

In addition to the two founding studs, the Better Value Bulls program encompasses several associated studs that have a similar breeding philosophy and this was the catalyst for the GUYRA GRASSFED BULL TRIAL.

SALE BULL PREPARATION

All bulls are prepared to prime condition, to fully exhibit their genetic potential without being ‘fed up’ to show extremes. Bulls are prepared with their working life in front of them and as such are fed a silage based ration for 90 days prior to sale. Prior to that, all bulls are grassfed only.

The exceptions are any bulls that have been prepared for show or exhibition and cannot be directly compared with TRIAL BULLS. The use of the objective EBVs are the only way to directly compare them from a performance and carcass viewpoint, due to their different nutritional programs. Their physical and structural traits, as for all bulls, can only be visually assessed.

Transport

• Carriers will be on hand on sale day to move stock immediately as required.

• Vendors will assist with delivery locally and further afield by arrangement.

• Any longer distance movement can be arranged at earliest convenience, all cattle can be held while transport is arranged at no cost to buyers.

Insurance

• Purchaser has responsibility at the fall of the hammer. An insurance representative will be available on sale day.

Semen Tests and Health Treatments

• All Bulls have been semen tested and are ready to work. Full reports are available upon request.

• All bulls have been treated with 7 in 1, 3 day, Tick fever (Blooded), PestiVirus and Botulism and drenched as required. Last drench was in May so are paddock ready with no further treatment required.

• Stud females have had 7 in 1, backline drench in May and are PV vaccinated. All females have been 3 day vaccinated but will require a booster in spring to complete their vaccination. Females have not been blooded due to their varied pregnancy status. If required cattle can be held while this is completed if the purchaser requires.

Bulls and Stud Females are ready to go to any destination in the Eastern States immediately without any further treatments.

Guarantee

• ALL stock are sold with Full Soundness Guarantee, and to the best of all vendors knowledge are in sound working order at the time of sale.

• Any issues that may arise regarding structural soundness or fertility need to have a vet report presented within 12 months of purchase. Any animal failing to breed, save for injury or mistreatment, may be either replaced with an animal of similar value or credit made available to the value of the purchase price less salvage value for use at future BETTER VALUE BULLS Sales.
