(GunsSaveLife.com) - Don’t they ever get tired of being wrong all the time? Gun control activists, anti-gun politicians, and their sycophants in the media have been making dire predictions, using over-the-top rhetoric, and making emotion-laden charges and insults against gun owners for decades now. The real world, however, has moved in the opposite direction.

All of the major arguments made by the gun controllers have been proven in real-world experience to be false. Why would anyone, now or in the future, listen to people who have been so wrong?

More guns cause more violence - WRONG! The number of guns in the hands of private citizens in the United States has risen dramatically in the past few decades, yet the FBI statistics tell us that the violent crime rate has declined.

Guns Save LifeChampaign-UrbanaMeeting Notes, April 14, 2015by John Naese

WelcomePresident Eric St. Pierre welcomed ev-eryone, and led the Pledge of Allegiance and the introduction of first-time visitors. Thanks, everyone, for coming. We will see you next month!

President’s ReportWith his big smile, GSL President Bear St. Pierre said a few short words that will lead to big things. “We are coming to Chicago.”

The audience applauded the announce-ment. The date is Saturday, May 30th at 4pm. The location is to be announced, but will likely be in the central part of Chicago. We’re urging everyone to attend and our goal is to recruit leaders to join already identified volunteers to bring monthly GSL meetings to multiple venues in Chicago-land.

Executive Director’s ReportJohn Boch gave an optimistic and upbeat report on the progress we’re making. He was fresh from the NRA’s national con-vention in Nashville, noting that it was the largest convention the state of Tennessee has ever hosted. He urged everyone to make plans to attend next year’s conven-tion in Louisville, Kentucky, and raved over the quality of educational seminars included at no charge. “The training opportunities available would easily cost you $1000 or more if you went to classes to hear this same information,” Boch noted.

Mr. Boch also touted Kansas adopting Constitutional Carry, effective July 1, and Mississippi enacting “purse” carry without a license, among other national news stories.

In Illinois, Todd Vandermyde is pushing the Illinois Senate President to turn at least some pro-gun bills loose from committee where they have been held hostage. We’re optimistic that Cullerton will be pragmatic in allowing some bills to move forward.

Also, those who are in Senator Bennett’s district should contact him by mail or phone and urge his continued support for gun rights in coming votes.

Dean Rothermel, a member of our GSL family and board member, send his best. He’s started chemotherapy following his recent cancer diagnosis. We’re optimistic that his treatment will allow his return to a normal life soon.

Larry Pasquale: Myron Deckard Memorial Fundraising ShootDanville Rifle and Pistol Club’s Larry Pasquale spoke for a few minutes, thanking GSL for its support of the Myron Deckard Memorial Shoot at DRPC. It’s the eighth year for the event, which raises money

for youth scholarships in the name of a DRPC member and sheriff’s deputy Myron Deckard who was killed in the line of duty in 2001. The event has garnered extensive positive publicity for gun owners and the Danville range.

This year they have a pair of raffles, each will have three winners. The actual shoot will take place on Sunday, June 14th from 10am - 4pm and everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. They are tons of prizes for participants.

CTO FundraiserRalph Johnson of Cross Trail Outfitters (CTO) spoke about his organization’s op-erations and their fundraising raffle. Man-ning the table with Ralph was one of the young men positively involved with CTO, D’lige Smith-Hughes. Cross Trail Outiftters is a Christian youth hunting and fishing club for young men ages 7-20. They work with at-risk kids, many from single parent house-holds with no male role models, to make them upstanding Christian young men, through the mentoring then with outstanding men in outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, shooting, and archery. CTO will be drawing on August 26, 2015, and the winner gets their choice of Savage Model 220 bolt action 20-gauge shotgun; a PSE Prophecy Bow, or and IPAD Air 2. Tickets are $10 each or 15 for $100. and will be available at Champaign GSL meetings.

DAV and the Fair BoardGSL member Marty Poling spoke about the future of the Disabled American Veterans group and the Champaign County Fair Board. For years, the major fundraiser each year for the local DAV chapter was a beer tent at the Champaign County Fair. In recent years, the Fair Board took a big-ger cut; rather than just renting them the space, the Board demanded a dollar for every beer the DAV sold; DAV was forced to raise prices just to keep up. A few years ago, the DAV proposed and was allowed to sell beer at the Grandstand during the big-name shows. After one year of that, the Fair Board instituted their own beer sales, and relegated the DAV back to their beer tent. The last time out, DAV sold $23,000 worth of beer - and six months later, got their cut from the Fair Board - a check for about $3000.

Marty reported the Fair Board is now thinking about not inviting the DAV back at all. He said if this happens, the DAV will have hundreds of picketers outside the fairgrounds letting people know the score. Marty joked that this included some of the motorcycle groups, and “they look pretty tough. I wouldn’t want to cross their picket line”. Marty said he will keep us informed, and if the Fair Board does actually disinvite the veterans, you’ll hear about here in Gun-News.

Larry Pasquale promoting the Myron Deckard Memorial Shoot.

Marty Poling, left, and Bear St. Pierre share a laugh at the April GSL meeting in Champaign. Poling was bringing members up to speed on the local county fair board evicting veterans from their fundraising post at the local fair after sixty years. Monies raised had always been used to help disabled veterans.

Our monthly gun winner, Chuck Ehrhardt of Emington, IL wasn’t present however Bruce Pirie, winner of the second place U.S. Flag artwork was present. He’s pictured here with GSL’s president Eric St. Pierre.

Darel Martin, Whitetails Unlimited Field Director for Illinois and Western Indiana, delivering his presentation as our main speaker. Among many topics, he outlined many of WTU’s programs.

Wendy Boch - HOOAH Deer Hunt for Heroes Golf Outing September 26thWendy spoke about the spectacular growth and great things being done by HOOAH - Healing Outside of a Hospital. The local branch of this group, HOOAH Deer Hunt for Heroes, has spoken at past meetings, most recently in April at the Pontiac GSL meeting, where audience members passed the hat and presented them with $850 ad-ditional dollars.

They are doing great work helping veter-ans about to be released from the military because of service-related injuries readjust to civilian life at home by taking them on outdoor activities, including a deer hunt

each year in McLean County.

Wendy said she doesn’t golf, doesn’t hunt, doesn’t shoot much and not very well, but she does have the ability to organize - so she volunteered to help the group with a charity fund-raising golf tournament, to be held in Pontiac on September 26. Put that date on your calendars. If you’re a golfer,

consider participating in the event. If you want to help HOOAH in some way, contact Wendy. She can be reached at Wendala2 (at) gmail (dot) com or by phone at 815 848 6248.

There will be lots of volunteer opportunities for this event, which ultimately helps our na-tion’s wounded servicemen (and women). You could help with promotions, or volun-teer to help keep things moving on the day of the event. Wendy noted how other GSL family members have volunteered their vari-ous talents to help HOOAH. For example, some folks have started making quilts for gifts to the soldiers when they come up for their deer hunt. They’re also trying to orga-nize a motorcycle escort, so the troops can be taken to Springfield and back, in style and with honor, to get them outfitted for their deer hunt. Everyone has some talent - please consider using it to help our nation’s wounded warriors through this program.

GunNews extra copies at High CaliberThere are usually a few GunNews left at High Caliber on Champaign GSL meet-ing night. We try to bring those remaining papers to the meeting. So if you’re at the meeting, and you think you know where you could place some GunNews so that members of the public can pick them up and read them, please take a bundle with you and pass them on. The new issue of the paper is printed about a week after the 2nd Tuesday GSL meeting, so let’s put any remaining papers to good use before the new edition comes out. And remember, between meetings if you want to pick up some bundles for distribution, stop by High Caliber training center in Urbana (open noon to 8pm most days) and pick some up. YOU and this newspaper are our best bet at getting more people educated about our gun rights and getting them to become members of Guns Save Life.

CMP NumberLarry Shurbet, our treasurer, reminds us that your membership in Guns Save Life, Inc. meets the requirement of the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) for club membership. Membership in a CMP affili-ated club is required to order rifles from the CMP. When ordering a rifle, be sure to use “Guns Save Life, Inc.” as your club name. Our CMP number is on your GSL member-ship card, along with your GSL member number.

AppleseedJohn Naese talked about the April 19 Apple-seed shoots, where Appleseeders from coast to coast, at the same moment (3pm on April 19, Central Time) will fire a thirteen round volley in remembrance of 13 of the first Americans to give their lives so that this country might be free. This happened at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, on April 19, 1775. That’s the day Marksman-ship met History, and the Heritage began.

That heritage is celebrated at every Appleseed, which is a one or two day rifle marksmanship event, with the stories of April 19, 1775 woven into it. If you’ve never been to an Appleseed you owe it to yourself to come to one, learn to shoot your rifle effectively, and hear some passionately-told history that you didn’t and won’t learn in school.

Many opportunities to Appleseed are com-

ing up in May and June, including a shoot at LeRoy Rifle and Pistol Club, May 16 and 17; Effingham County Sportsmen’s Club, May 30 & 31; the Otto Newlin Shooting Range in Georgetown on June 6 & 7, and the annual Guns Save Life sponsored Appleseed shoot at Darnall’s Ranges in Bloomington on June 6 & 7. John’s contact info is in the directory at the back of this is-sue; call or email him with any questions, or sign up for an Appleseed at appleseedinfo.org.

Door Prizes and Gun DrawingAs is our custom, a number of our attend-ees went away with a memento of their night at GSL after having their number drawn for a door prize. Our Gun of the Month, a Ruger SR9c, was won by Chuck Ehrhardt of Emington, IL. A second ticket was drawn as a bonus this month, the prize being a cool-looking framed American Flag print that GSL received as a sponsor of the Illini chapter of Friends of NRA. The lucky winner was Bruce Pirie. Congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to all the folks who bought drawing tickets. We’ll see you next month.

Main SpeakerDarel MartinWhitetails UnlimitedWhitetails Unlim-ited started in 1982 when there were not that many whitetail deer around. Its original emphasis was on growing the herd, but it has transitioned over the years to focus more on education. WU has the reputation of being the nation’s premier organization dedicating its resources to the betterment of the white-tailed deer, its habi-tat and the tradition of deer hunting.

Darel is the Field Director for Illinois and western Indiana. There are 36 chapters in Illinois, each of which holds an annual fundraising banquet. Half the money raised goes to local projects, and half is allocated on a national basis. Since 1982, WU has raised and distributed over $58 million for education, conservation, habitat manage-ment, and anti-poaching efforts. Individual chapters have invested in habitat, plant-ing equipment for landowners to use to enhance habitat, college scholarships, particularly aimed at agricultural students, and efforts to get youth involved and trained in hunting, shooting, and archery.

Darel said that as many as eight of the Illinois chapters host an annual Youth Day to get young people interested, put guns and bows in their hands, and try to spark an interest in our hunting heritage. WU also sponsors the National Archery in the Schools program. This starts as a PE activ-ity in school, with a view toward generating after-school archery clubs. These activities help youth to increase their self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as promoting our American heritage.

Other projects funded by WU include dona-tions to the Department of Natural Re-sources, both for habitat development and for anti-poaching efforts. For example, WU has bought mechanical deer that help DNR officers catch poachers, and paid for heli-

copter night flights to catch them as well.

WU has a very successful record of getting youth and women involved, both in their fundraising banquets and in the hunting sports as well.

Darel answered questions from the audi-ence, and had giveaways available for everyone, including the latest Whitetails magazine with great deer hunting tips, and anti-poaching signs to discourage illegal activity. Thanks to Darel for his fine presen-tation and information.

Tech TimeJohn BochSituational AwarenessJohn gave some tips and information he picked up from a presentation by Steve Tarani at the NRA Convention, as well as things he has been teaching to his personal protection students for many years.

“You don’t even need a gun to practice the single, best thing you can do to avoid becoming a victim. In fact, if you need your gun, you’ve already failed 90% of preventing an attack,” Boch said to begin his presentation. By maintaining situational awareness, you won’t need a gun to avoid victimization by a violent criminal attacker.

There are three types of people out there. One type lives in denial; the “it can’t happen to me” crowd. They walk around with their heads down, going about their business, and hoping the odds work out in their favor that they are not chosen to be victimized. Another type is the “someone else will handle it” crowd. They rely on the police or others to get them out of a bad situation, should one arise.

And then there are those who take respon-sibility for their own safety, and are proac-tive about it through situational awareness. This is the type of person usually doesn’t become a victim, and it has little to do with whether or not they carry a gun.

Criminal predators look around to identify a potential victim, and once they’ve make their selection, they stalk, close distance to make contact, and then victimize.

The easiest place to escape victimization is not to look like an easy target. Don’t be oblivious, walking around with your head down or buried in your phone or other device. Exude confidence, walk with your head up and make eye contact. Look around and take note of your surroundings, and anything that might be unusual or raise alarm bells in your head.

One of the popular crimes right now is “ap-ple picking” - the theft of iPhones right from oblivious users’ hands. A criminal literally snatches it and runs away. If they could get that close without being seen, what would have happened if the criminal’s intention was to hurt their victim instead of snatching a phone? Put your phone away, keep your head up and stay alert and you will keep

yourself off violent criminals’ “easy victim” radar.

If a criminal has picked you as a potential victim, they will keep pace with you, stalking you for the ideal moment to close the distance and pounce. If you see someone keeping pace with you, change tactics. Cross the street, change direction, or otherwise alter your path. Let them know you see them and do your best to get to a more public, visible location or at the least, a more defensible location (putting obstacles between you and your stalker). At this point, they may lose interest in you and seek a softer or easier target.

Once they begin to close the distance, you can still thwart their plan. Guard your personal space, the six to nine feet around you. If an attacking bad guy can cover 21 feet in a second and a half, how long do you think it will take them to cover 9 feet? The answer is “less time than it takes you to react”. Keep them away from you and maintain your reactionary gap with distance and/or obstacles. A loud “STAY BACK!” with a raised open hand will put them on notice that you’re not an easy victim, and will get the attention of others.

Lots of criminals will do a final “test” before actually committing their crime; an “interview” question. Got the time? Got a light? Can you spare a dollar? The answer, in all cases, is NO. “NO!” forcefully said. Be rude. Don’t worry about what they or others will think of you.

They don’t really want to know what time it is; they want you to look at your watch or phone instead of them, or to test your compliance while they close the last few feet of distance. Engage them, verbally and non-verbally, before the situ-ation deteriorates and you have to go to guns. If it gets that far you’ve already lost, even if you survive the gunfire.

Use your powers of observation and awareness to avoid becoming a victim.

Guns Save Life Effingham

Meeting Notes by Bill Harrison The April GSL South meeting was held at the Effingham Sportsman’s Club on Thursday, Apr 4. Thirty-one attendees were present for another fine meal catered by Niemerg’s as well as some very interesting presentations.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by our Executive Director, John Boch, who led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were five first time attendees who were welcomed as they introduced themselves. The new attendees were from Charleston, Mattoon, Altamont & Toledo.

Executive Director’s Report John presented his Executive Director’s notes including a run-down of what’s happening both nationally and here in Illinois. Long-time GSL member, Frank Wright, has been appointed as a member of the Concealed Carry Review Board for the State of Illinois. John noted that Frank had pledged to ensure that the rights of the applicants referred to the board were protected. John also noted that Frank had somewhat jokingly asked for us to disregard his past comments on overpaid government bureaucrats.

He noted that Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) cards are now only available online or, for those persons without internet access, by initiating the process with a phone call to the Illinois State Police at (217) 782-7980. The original application forms are now obsolete.

John noted that there had been no actions in IL concerning suppressors, and noted that we should always refer to them as suppressors and not as “silencers” as Hollywood has long misinformed people as to what suppressors can do. They are only mufflers, after all.

The suppressor bill and other pro-gun bills are being held up by Senate President Cullerton and Speaker Madigan in committee.

John emphasized the great significance of large numbers of persons submitting Witness Slips, noting that few legislators actually read all of a proposed bill, but if they see tons witness slips in one direction on a bill compared to only a few on the other side, the legislator will usually be more inclined to vote with the vast majority who submitted slips. We’ll continue to post witness slip lists on the website gunssavelife.com as appropriate.

GSL may soon be expanding! A target date has been set in May for an initial GSL meeting in Chicago, and additional branches could be started in the Windy City in the future! There is also discussion of a chapter in Springfield. Interest has been received from persons living in the states of Iowa, Arizona, Florida, and Indiana who are interested in starting GSL meetings in those states as well.

John noted that in addition to the regular efforts of NRA and the ISRA, the Second

Amendment Foundation has been a work horse in recent advancements in pro gun legislation, including the Heller decision and the McDonald decision. The SAF’s Alan Gottlieb will be Champaign’s main speaker at the July 14th meeting.

Questions were received from the floor about FOID & CCL renewals.

It was noted that this was the first year that gun rights activists were admitted into the Governor’s office. Governor Rauner met with them for about a half hour on the morning of IGOLD. The Governor also showed that he has a FOID card!

Main SpeakerEric St. PierreCross Trail OutfittersThe guest speaker was GSL President, Eric “Bear” St Pierre, who spoke about his activities with the Cross Trail Outfitters (CTO), a youth centered organization which engages in participation and instruction in numerous activities such as camping, hunting, fishing, bow fishing, axe throwing, shooting and others.

There are numerous firearm activities, including familiarization with and shooting of long guns from .22 caliber to 41 magnum, 17 mm to 7.62 and .308; pistol, revolver and shotgun. The kids get to shoot clays & paint balls. He noted that a new event for this year will be underwater bow hunting.

CTO is a nationwide organization, presently active in five states with over 100 participants here in IL. To generate operating funds, particularly for the boys from poor families, they are selling tickets to be drawn in August for your choice of an iPad, a nice compound bow, or a Savage 20-gauge slug shotgun.

GSL Treasurer Larry Shurbet commented that GSL currently has members living in 32 states and that Indiana is second only to Illinois for membership.

Troy Hines, GSL Speaker Coordinator, introduced himself and said he would be working to obtain quality speakers for upcoming meetings. He indicated that the May Effingham GSL speaker is scheduled to be Dan Metz, who collects Lugers and loves big game hunts in Africa.

Tech TimeBen GossettHunting in GermanyFor Tech Time, Ben Gossett, GSL member from Casey, IL told of his 20 years of hunting experiences while living in Germany, ten of which he was while serving in the US military and ten more because he just loved the countryside. He displayed several European skull mount trophies of deer which he had killed during his residence there, accompanied by details of each event. Most of the hunting in Germany is done from “High Seats”, similar in function to what we call deer stands, but normally individually constructed in local trees. He had also participated in several drive hunts but always seemed to be in the wrong place at the right time, and only claimed to have shot one fox.

He quipped that in Germany, you had to

pay a fee to someone to do anything (just like in IL!).

In order for a German National to obtain a hunting license they had to attend weekly classes for 6 months, pay a fee of 1,600 Marks, and pass a written test. As a member of the US Military, he only had to attend about 3 weeks of classes, pay $350.00, and pass a written test.

John thanked Kent Metzger for emceeing the Effingham meetings for the past year or so. Kent is stepping down from that position.

Several items were available for door prizes including a .177 air rifle, won by one of the CTO youths present.

European mounts, along with German hunting and firearm licenses on display by Ben Gossett. He talked about what it’s like to go hunting in Germa-ny and how intensive their training is to become a “jaeger” or hunter.

Gun Draw. First time attendee, Edward Davis, from Mattoon held the matching ticket for the drawing for a new Savage 93R17, 17 HMR rifle.

May Speaker: Dan Metz will discuss his big game hunt in Africa.

Small-town newspaper shoots self in foot in hit piece on Guns Save LifePontiac (Guns Save Life) - Unbeknownst to us, a Pontiac Daily Leader reporter named Paul Westermeyer dropped in on April 2015 GSL meeting in Pontiac. He stayed for about a half-hour before leaving, and then published a smear piece written as an editorial the following Saturday.

The story was met with harsh condemna-tion by members of the community, both on the Pontiac Daily Leader’s web site and on their Facebook page.

Guns Save Life fired back less than 48 hours later with a rebuttal of Westermey-er’s “story”, along with harsh criticism of the local paper for publishing a sense-less piece attacking so many upstanding members of the Pontiac local community - the very members of the community who buy advertisements and subscrip-tions.

After weathering a storm of criticism, the Pontiac newspaper’s managing editor contacted GSL’s Executive Director.

The following day, the Daily Leader’s Facebook post was pulled, which elimi-nated nearly two dozen harsh comments directed at the newspaper.

We’re hoping that the local paper sends another reporter to our May 5th meeting to offer a more independent news feature of a meeting that turns out nearly one hundred community members to promote and defend the ideals voiced by our na-tion’s Founding Fathers.

Reprint of an excerpt of our blog entry on the Daily Leader’s hit piece.

Gunfire of the vanitiesBy Paul Westermeyer

Pontiac, IL (Pontiac Daily Leader) – I received a call last week from a guy asking if he and his fellows could get some media coverage for the local chapter of Guns Save Life. Though this is something we don’t typically do, I gave him the “We’ll look into it” line.

Then there was this exchange:

“I also have a birthday I want to put in the paper, but when I walked by your offices, I noticed a sign that said I was unwelcome.”

Come again? What sign?

“The sign with the handgun and the red cross through it — I’m unwelcome in your building.”

Unfortunately for this man, whom I can only assume would leave the Charlie Hebdo clue unanswered in an intermedi-

ate crossword puzzle, we do indeed have a sign on our door that prohibits guns on the premises.

Interesting Mr. Westermeyer goes from unaware of the sign to aware of it. It’s indicative of what’s to come. As for Charlie Hebdo: All the gun control in France didn’t save a single member of the Hebdo staff from Muslim terrorists.

The gentleman who called the newspaper office and spoke with Mr. Westermeyer also called me afterwards. As I recall, the man called to place a quarter-page advertisement to recognize a close relative’s milestone birthday. When told he would need to come down to the office, that’s when the topic of the sign came up. In the end, he declined to go to the newspaper to finalize the ad because of the “NO GUNS” sign and explained why. In the midst of the back and forth, he mentioned the monthly Guns Save Life meeting in Pontiac. He invited Mr. Westermeyer out to learn more about why he felt that a gun-free zone was a criminal empowerment zone.

But it intrigued me to find out why someone would feel his safety compromised in a build-ing of people armed with only slacks and pens, so I decided to drop in on their event at the VFW last Tuesday.

It’s not the people “armed” with slacks and pens he’s concerned about. It’s the violent criminal actors who might drop in on the business. Just as violent crimi-nal Muslim terrorists dropped in on Charlie Hebdo and slaugh-tered their men “armed” with slacks and pens.

I attended the rally briefly, as other duties were more press-

ing. But in the half-hour I was there, it didn’t take long to notice a few things …

Every other person in atten-dance had a drink of some sort; the ones immediately around me had a wide selec-tion in front of them. I’m the furthest thing from a teetotaler, but it would seem that a Hem-ingwayesque intake of alcohol pairs well with arms. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Every other person had a drink of some sort? No doubt Mr. Westermeyer likes to parse his words like Bill Clinton. I too had a drink: water. I might have had two in fact. The reality is that half the people or more were eating. Of course they had a “drink”: defined as beverage. Sure, a dozen or so of almost ninety people might have had a beer. Some maybe two. So what?

Of the more than 70 people I counted, there were only nine women in attendance. There was a single person in the hall who wasn’t white. Whether that speaks more to culture of the group or to who is actually interested, I don’t know. Make of it what you will.

We had closer to ninety. I’m sure Paul can count that high. Nine women? Maybe. So? One non-white? Who brought race into the mix? Livingston County is only about one-third as non-white as the Illinois average. Does that speak to the culture of Livingston County residents or those who choose to live there? Clearly residents must have moved there because they didn’t like non-whites, right? That’s why Livingston County residents elected an African-American sheriff as the highest elected official in the county, right?

Upon commencement, John Boch, the executive director of the firearms advocacy group, held his microphone too close to his face during his address and reverberated the room with optimism regarding relaxation of gun laws.

Grasping for anything he can.

He expressed hope that someday soon, silencers could make their way into the gun enthusiast’s arsenal.

And it makes PERFECT sense: when taking jurispru-dence into your own hands with the argument of self-de-fense, why alert your distress to others with the sound of gunfire? You can be judge, jury, executioner AND secret agent!

Paul’s shrill tone belies his deep-seated hatred of gun owners and anyone who doesn’t share his political ideology.

Boch also talked about the prospect of lifting gun restric-tions in Chicago, saying that, yes, things may get a little row-dy for awhile, but that criminals will think twice when facing an armed populace …

In other words, an armed secret police of everyday people — in effect, the new Stasi; mobilized with guns and Zersetzung.

A secret police? How about just self-reliant everyday people who, instead of cowering to threats from violent criminal predators, possess the means of fighting back in self-defense. Paul seems to prefer they sub-mit to repeated victimization.

Snipers, Designated Marksmen, GI Joe, GI Jane, & PTSDby Ray Clark, USMC Vietnam veteran; and Dr. Doug Rokke, Major US Army retired

Part 2 of 2

Snipers: 1. are highly trained experts on different weapons and ballistics.2. practice marksmanship constantly.3. train in concealment. If they are found they die a hard death.4. may have bounties on their head.5. have competent and professional spotters who ensure their round hits the intended target. Spotters may also be qualified snipers. The spotter will be watching the area with a telescope of some type. The spotter can provide the sniper with almost instantaneous bal-listics corrections to ensure each target is killed. 6. use computers with GPS.7. use distance or range finders to opti-mize their shot. 8. use instruments to measure exact ambient temperature, wind direction, wind speed, and humidity. 9. practice observation, target selection, and shot placement.

Snipers eliminate the effects of all variables to ensure their shot hits and kills the intend-ed target. Although each type of rifle round primarily used by snipers (5.56 NATO, 7.62 NATO, .308 Winchester, .300 Winchester magnum, or .338 Lapua) or pistol round (9 mm, .45 auto, .22) has specific ballistic characteristics or limitations. Each rifle or pistol has specific inherent mechanical attri-butes the sniper is trained to select and use the appropriate rifle or pistol and is capable of optimizing each shot fired to hit / kill the intended target within their line of sight, field of vision, or field of fire.

Warriors consider snipers such as Chris and their own squad designated rifleman as “guardian angels”. That is portrayed in the movie when one guy Chris saved came up to Chris and his son to thank Chris for saving his life. He had lost one leg - but he

was alive. As I discussed in my book The Never Ending War (Ray & LM Clark, ISBN 978-1-62510-921-7, Tate Publishing, 2013), during infantry combat while in Vietnam as Marines we practiced firing our weapons at 30 & 40 yards. We had to just HIT the target to get it sighted in for semi-automatic and automatic weapons firing.

Firing full automatic or “rock and roll” is fun but it is extremely difficult to control the weapon and therefore a three-round burst or semi-automatic mode – one round per pull of the trigger is preferred. Most firefights are close engagements. We fought for ourselves and our friends. Our motto was “No man left behind”. We fought our enemy face to face during the daytime and nighttime, and we were mostly out-numbered. We had to make instantaneous decisions because HESITATING would get us killed. Our villains were trained soldiers, civilian soldiers, booby traps, IED’s (im-

provised explosive devices) and suicide bombers.

Every person who is involved in combat or other military operations will be affected. These effects going back to antiquity are known collectively as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, battle fatigue, combat fatigue, shell shock, or soldier’s heart. They are all adrenalin disorders brought on by physi-ological or psychological trauma. Combat is exciting. You can go from complete tranquil-ity and boredom to sheer terror and chaos within a few seconds and bounce back and forth between those two states numerous times in an hour, a day, a week, a month,

or a year without any actual relaxation and recovery depending on the duration of your deployment.

You have to develop a mental hardness that goes against everything you’ve ever been taught at home and in church. You must be-come as complacent as the corner butcher working on a fresh piece of meat.

Today just as during Nam soldiers usu-ally rotate out (redeploy) as an individual or maybe as a unit but because of rapid transportation capabilities you could be in combat and back home in a “safe, secure, location” within the same day.

Most returning warriors just got dumped out on the community once they were home. In the movie American Sniper we see Chris leave Iraq right after a fire fight, come back home, go to a bar all alone, then finally call his wife to go home.

Although each returning warrior is sup-posed to go through and complete a post deployment physical exam (DD 2796) after every deployment too often that is incom-plete, or short-circuited because the warrior is told they will be put in holding status if any problems are identified. The GAO has found that least 23% of completed physi-cal exams are now missing. The purpose of this physical exam is to identify medical problems and potential PTSD and then set up medical care.

Coming home or back to “Disney World”

Bradley Cooper (on the rifle) portraying Chris Kyle in the box-office smash “American Sniper”

you try to forget everything that has hap-pened. You put all of your bad memories away and then try to act as normal as possible while you are dying on the inside. It is not unusual for a returning warrior to shutdown, hibernate, go into seclusion. After involvement in any combat opera-tions at any level for any duration and after especially intense duty as a marksman or sniper you come back home to live a life, by comparison, with a total a lack of excite-ment. You thrived on the adrenalin rush and now that rush is absent.

Extreme loneliness sets in because you miss your friends (dead and alive) who you depended on and who depended on you to survive. Warriors have two families, their military family or battle buddies and their civilian family including their spouse, kids, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and civilian friends.

These are two distinct families and they are always separated. You can only be with one at a time. This creates a major conflict because neither understands the other’s role or how each separate family affects the warrior. As a result of combat some died, some became disabled and others came back basically unaffected. For those who lost battle buddies while they came home survivors guilt is a major cause of depres-sion in many returning veterans.

Returning veterans can avoid many prob-lems with readjustment simply by making good choices in friends and entertainment. Choose your friends wisely because you will probably end up just like them.

As a consequence of frustration, loneli-ness, physiological medical problems and psychological problems many veterans try to self-medicate with prescription drugs and alcohol which only causes more problems.

American Sniper illuminates these prob-lems as described in the book and shown in the movie. Chris Kyle and his buddy were murdered by another OIF veteran. Clearly without designated marksman and snipers who killed threat targets our own numbers of American military KIA and WIA would have been much higher. However the hid-den toll on all involved requires prompt an optimal medical care.

Sadly, that medical care remains elusive. It also shows the need for better weapons training. In response to that need mobile marksmanship training teams are now being created and deployed but proper training is still only a pipe dream because of budgetary restrictions.

...you try to forget everything that has happened. You put

all of your bad memories away and then try to act as

normal as possible...

GSL Peoria Thursday April 2, 2015Meeting Summary by Steve Schnurbusch

68 people were in attendance at the first meeting at Childers Banquet Center. The meeting began after most had enjoyed the beef brisket meal.

D’lige Smith-Hughes spoke about Cross Trail Outfitters and its program of outdoor activities and mentorship. The group sold drawing tickets after the meeting. Steve Schnurbusch mentioned the youth program at Peoria Skeet and Trap and also encouraged people to go to the Champaign meeting in May which will have several topics of interest to women.

Main Speaker Steve Davis The Spirit of 1776Steve Davis presented an informative and entertaining talk covering some important Revolutionary War history. After early Colonial success leading to the British evacuation of Boston, the King’s army came back with force in the 1776 invasion of New York. Washington’s army suffered numerous losses and narrowly escaped

complete capture a few times. Things were certainly looking grim for American Independence.

Intelligence indicated that a strong detachment of Hessian mercenaries occupied Trenton New Jersey in December of 1776. Washington decided a victory was needed to reverse the trend of defeats and decided to attack Trenton regardless of the long odds. The weather was cold and icy and the Delaware River crossing was treacherous for the ill equipped American army. Streaks of blood were on the snow covered roads from soldiers without shoes.

The army persevered and reached Trenton. The Hessians were surprised that they would be attacked in such nasty winter conditions, but still fought hard.

The Americans carried the day and killed, wounded or captured the enemy forces fulfilling Washington’s password for the operation—Victory Or Death!

Steve’s talk gave some examples of individual actions and decisions that made a huge difference to the outcome. A doctor who joined the march along the way ended up saving the life of a future president. Another person involved in the battle had another great connection to our current lives. Make sure you hear Steve’s talk in person at an Appleseed or GSL meeting as that connection needs to be heard in person.

ACTIVISM

by John Boch

I’m upbeat and you should be too!

Gun rights are making bold advances na-tionwide and are poised to do good things here in Illinois.

Kansas enacted Constitutional Carry, and Mississippi went permit-free for container carry for law-abiding residents. Those wins are huge! At the same time, another dozen states are passing other pro-gun laws.

Illinois is set to take more modest steps. Considering our state is very blue, even small progress is impressive.

We are working to get suppressors legal-ized, and to beat back universal back-ground checks and gun restraining orders, there’s still much to do.

That’s where you come in. There are op-portunities to help make a difference!

Are you displeased with the 16-hour training requirement for a carry license? Unhappy with the $150 fee? Angry over the long list of prohibited locations? Help us fix these problems.

Want to see the FOID Act repealed in the next few years?

“Freedom is not a spectator sport,” Steve Naber from Jacksonville once told me.

Until and unless more of Illinois 1.8 million FOID holders get more vocal and assert our rights, change will continue to be slow.

That’s not to mean we’re not hard at work here at Guns Save Life, educating and promoting gun rights with everyday people and political insiders alike.

We’re working behind the scenes in Spring-field. We’re educating scores of thousands each month on our website and in Gun-News. We’re bringing our unique style of upbeat, informative and entertaining meet-ings to Chicagoland.

Our members help with these projects and membership dues help us get results.

What sort of opportunities are available to help make a difference to make the world a better place for you, your kids, and grand-kids?

1. Join. Join the National Rifle Association if you’re not already a member.

Join Guns Save Life. We’re agile, ag-gressive and proactive at getting results. The next best thing to actually ‘being there, doing that’ is sending in your membership

dues to help us be there and do that. Plus you get all the other benefits of member-ship, including ownership of our highway sign program, our GunNews Magazine, discounts at some merchants, first dibs at our legal defense fund and access to the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s firearms and ammunition.

2a. Practice activism with your elected officials. Contact your state senator and representative. If they don’t know you by name, you haven’t done quite enough to get to know them. Call them, write them, stop by and see them in person and let them know you want them to support your right to defend yourself.

A second, important thing you can do is submit witness slips. We’ll provide you a list of bills and links to slip creation at our website, GunsSaveLife.com. Witness slips get results. Gun owners killed the ivory

ban proposal in a Senate committee, in part thanks to witness slips that were fifty or seventy-five to one opposed to the bill.

2b. Be proactive in promoting gun rights. Volunteer and promote freedom for future generations. Working together, we can accomplish much more than working independently and certainly more than if we site on a couch doing nothing.

2c. Join us at our upcoming meetings. Bring your friends. If you want to really make a difference, get together with some friends and bring a GSL meeting to your area! Contact our President Eric “Bear” St. Pierre at 217 480-BEAR for more informa-tion.

3. Stay current on the issues. Visit GunsSaveLife.com for legislative is-sues that may come up. Write letters and make calls when critical action is needed.

4. Lastly, exercise those rights. Become a gun owner. Get training. Go shooting and take a friend. Carry your gun as the law-abiding citizen. Join Guns Save Life and attend Guns Save Life meetings. Write your political representatives and submit those witness slips.

Thanks for reading and God bless America and our firearm civil rights.

In the Do It Yourself Department...

Finishing Aluminumby A. GunsSaveLife Member

You’ve just successfully milled out the fire control pocket on your 80% lower receiver and correctly drilled the holes for the ham-mer pin, trigger pin and selector. Now what? If your 80% lower came pre-finished, then you are all set. Add a lower parts kit, marry it to an upper and enjoy!

If your 80% lower was not prefinished, then you have some potentially fun choices to make. You can etch or engrave any design you want on your lower receiver. You also can choose the finish and color of it.

Firearms manufacturers and gunsmiths use a process called “bluing” to provide a tough, corrosion-resistant finish for steel. There is a similar finishing process for aluminum – it’s called anodizing.

Anodizing deposits a layer of aluminum oxide onto your aluminum part. Aluminum oxide is hard, resists corrosion and wear, and can be dyed different colors.

There are many excellent online resources for anodizing. Here are a couple of per-sonal favorites:

Vader Spade’s AR-15 build: http://www.ar15.com/mobile/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=484783

Caswell Plating: http://forum.caswellplating.com/anodizing-questions/

Safety First(!)Anodizing is a fairly easy process. How-ever, it involves handling hazardous chemicals, including sulfuric acid. Before purchasing anodizing chemicals, make sure you understand how to safely handle, use, store and dispose of these chemicals. Eye protection and protective gloves are manda-tory.

Also, the anodizing process creates fumes that should not be inhaled. Anodizing is

best done under a fume hood, not in your man-cave.

Preparing your part for AnodizingAnodizing doesn’t change the texture or quality of the surface. If the surface is shiny before anodizing, it will be shiny afterwards. Anodizing will not hide scratches, machin-ing marks or other imperfections. You need to create the surface texture/quality you want before anodizing.

Anodizing requires the surface to be ab-solutely clean and grease-free. You might consider investing in a brand new, never used pair of Playtex gloves to keep your skin oils off the lower receiver during the anodize process. Use a new toothbrush as a scrub brush to get into every nook and cranny. Use lots of dish soap. Soap it up, scrub thoroughly inside and out, and then rinse. Repeat. Repeat again.

The first image shows a clean lower re-ceiver, ready for anodizing. A flag pattern and serial number have been etched on the side (the serial number has been blocked out). This lower has been bead blasted to give it a satin finish (trying to match the finish of a Rock River upper). Just a note on bead blasting – if you are going to bead blast prior to anodizing – be sure to use fresh blasting media to avoid contaminating the lower receiver surface with rust particles and dirt that could ruin the anodized finish.

Once the receiver is clean, you need to attach an aluminum hanging wire. This wire needs to provide a good electrical connec-tion and a good mechanical connection to the lower receiver. 12 gauge aluminum wire works best (DO NOT USE COPPER WIRE – it will foul the anodizing bath). Take one end of the aluminum wire and fold 1” back on itself. Using a clean pair of pliers (and wearing clean, new Playtex gloves), twist the folded wire into the threaded pistol grip attachment hole. Aluminum wire is much softer than the lower receiver alloy. The wire will conform to the hole/threads

and make a solid connection without dam-aging the threads.

The second image shows a lower receiver with aluminum hanging wire in place. A second aluminum wire loops around the hanging wire, passing through the pivot pin holes to help keep the receiver horizontal.

Commercial anodizing is generally done as a 6-step process (clean, etch, desmut, anodize, dye, seal). The good news is that for the alloy used in AR-15 lowers, you can usually skip the etch and desmut steps and use a 4-step process (clean, anodize, dye, seal). You should use distilled water in each step and for rinses between each step.

Let’s take a look at the 4-step anodizing process:Since detailed instructions are available from multiple websites, I’ll provide an over-view here with some images. A 2 gallon an-odizing line (i.e., each tank holds 2 gallons) works well for lower receivers.

Cleaner Tank: Anodizing uses a special industrial detergent dissolved in distilled water at 140 F. The lower stays in this bath about 5-10 minutes. Rinse very thoroughly in distilled water after cleaning – get the de-tergent out of every nook, cranny and screw hole before going to the next step.

Anodize Tank: The anodizing tank is the most complicated tank, requiring elec-trodes, sulfuric acid, lots of agitation and a cheap battery charger.

Sulfuric acid is just battery acid – you can get it from any auto supply store. Battery acid generally comes as a 35% sulfuric acid solution. Anodizing requires a sulfuric acid concentration of 15-20%. Diluting the bat-tery acid with an equal volume of distilled water will get you 17.5%. REMEMBER – ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER. Mix-ing acid and water releases a tremendous amount of heat. If you add water to acid,

the water may boil – spattering acid all over you!

There are 2 types of electrodes in the anod-izing tank, the anode (positive lead) and the cathode (negative lead). The lower receiver is the anode (hence, the process is called anodizing). To deposit a uniform anodize layer, position the lower receiver in the cen-ter of the tank, with large cathodes on either side. The third image shows an empty anodize tank with 2 cathodes (the aluminum plates), one on each side, connected by an aluminum wire.

A good size for each cathode plate is 6 x 12”. They should be made from a good quality alloy, like 6061 or 7075 (see www.onlinemetals.com for more information about aluminum alloys). A five gallon plas-tic bucket works well for the anodizing tank.

The anodizing tank requires lots of agitation – use 1 or 2 hoses from an aquarium air pump. DO NOT USE AN AQUARIUM AIR STONE – it will dissolve in the acid and foul your anodizing tank.

The anodizing tank needs to be at room temperature (68-70 F). If the tank gets too warm, you will end up with a thin, weak an-odize layer that doesn’t take dye very well and is easily damaged.

IMPORTANT - when anodizing – noxious fumes are released. Do not breathe the fumes. Anodizing is best done under a fume hood. Some anodizing kits include an additive to decrease the fumes.

You will need a DC power supply capable of 13-15 volts. Each lower receiver will draw about 5-6 amps. A cheap car battery charger capable of 6 amps should do just fine. Avoid automatic battery chargers –

they will think the leads are shorted and turn themselves off.

The lower receiver connects to the positive lead. The aluminum cathodes in the tank connect to negative lead . With a current draw of 5-6 amps, it takes about 1 hour to grow the 1 mil thick anodize layer. Hang the lower receiver so it is parallel to the cathode plates to encourage a uniform anodize layer.

The fourth image shows a lower receiver in the anodizing tank.

After anodizing for an hour, thoroughly rinse the lower receiver in distilled water. You need to get the acid out of every nook, cranny and hole if you want good, uniform dye coverage.

Dye Tank: The anodized layer is porous. When you dye the part, you are basically filling the pores with pigment. The longer the lower receiver is in the dye tank, the darker the color will be. If you are dying your receiver black, let it sit in the dye tank for 20 minutes. The fifth image shows a lower receiver coming out of the dye tank:

After 20 minutes in the dye tank, thoroughly rinse the lower receiver in distilled water. Get the excess dye out of every nook, cranny and screw hole.

Sealer Tank: Now that the pores are full of pigment, you want to close the pores – trapping the dye. This process is called sealing.

Without delving too deeply into the chemis-try of sealing... The anodize layer is made of aluminum oxide. Hydrating the aluminum oxide causes it to swell, closing the pores.

There are a variety of ways to seal the anodize layer: steam, boiling water and treatment with a sealing solution such as nickel acetate.

Steam and boiling water have the ad-vantage of not requiring any chemicals. However they can leach out some of the dye – potentially changing the color of your part. Boil the part for 20 minutes in distilled water or expose the part to steam for 40-50 minutes.

Many commercial anodizing lines use a nickel acetate bath heated to 180 degrees. 20 minutes in a nickel acetate bath will seal the pores. Nickel acts as a catalyst, accelerating the surface hydration pro-cess. Also, the nickel acetate bath causes nickel hydroxide to precipitate in the pores – providing a better seal. Nickel acetate po-tentially provides a nicer finish than boiling or steam. However, nickel is a heavy metal. Before purchasing nickel acetate, be sure you know how to legally dispose of it.After sealing, thoroughly rinse the part one last time using distilled water. Allow the part to dry for 24 hours. Then give your lower receiver a good coat of high quality gun oil.

The sixth image shows the lower receiver after sealing and drying.

Finally, here is the lower after installing a parts kit and joining to a Rock River upper:

Types of AnodizingThe process described here is called type II anodizing. Type II is the most widely used process because it is cheap and produces a very resilient, tough finish that is easily dyed.

A more advanced process, called type III anodizing, is used for mil-spec applications, producing anodize layers up to 3 mils thick. Type III anodizing requires a dilute sulfuric acid bath cooled to just above freezing. It also requires a much higher voltage that changes (increases) during the process. It is harder to dye a type III anodize layer, with typically only a few color choices available (black, OD green). Type III anodizing is best done by a commercial anodizing shop. ConclusionShould you try this at home? Anodizing is a fairly straightforward process. However, it involves hazardous chemicals and danger-ous fumes (i.e., think OSHA, EPA, local/state ordinances). Pouring your waste chemicals down the drain or dumping them in the back yard would not be viewed favor-ably in most jurisdictions. Many would-be anodizers choose to take their job to a pro-fessional for this very reason. However, if you are building a lower receiver and want to do every step yourself, applying a beauti-ful anodized finish is a fun and rewarding way to complete your build.

jurisdictions that were more restrictive.

His academic paper on the subject became a book, More Guns - Less Crime. Lott and others have continued to run the numbers and that analysis continues to be true.

People will get in gun battles over park-ing spaces - WRONG! Studies show that carry permit holders are actually more law-abiding than average citizens or even police officers. The number of permits revoked for any reason is miniscule.

Scary gun bans will reduce crime - WRONG! Various federal, state, and local (Chicago) “assault weapons” bans have been implemented over the years. None of them reduced crime, and the removal of those bans did not increase crime.

Illinois isn’t ready for concealed carry - WRONG! The legislature, controlled by Chicago politicians, had its hand forced by a federal court, and finally passed a bill authorizing concealed carry permits. Far from not being ready, tens of thousands of Illinoisans have jumped through the con-siderable hoops set by that law, and there have been no problems.

The gun controllers have been WRONG with every prediction, but they just keep go-ing. They change their names, they change their current focus. Banning “handguns” changed to banning “assault weapons” changed to limiting right to carry with “gun free zones” changed to “common sense gun safety” legislation. All of these efforts are based on WRONG assumptions - that limiting guns out of the hands of everyday

Chicken Little continued from cover law-abiding citizens will make all of us safer.

Why does anyone listen to them? They appeal to emotions, but have no facts on their side. That does not stop them from trying and it does not stop the media from blindly following. To say that the agenda-driven media often attempts to portray NRA and gun owners in a negative light is an understatement. Writers and political commentators routinely label the NRA as extremists; or worse. Others claim that gun owners exercising their right to carry will resurrect the “Old West” and that laws rec-ognizing this right “seem almost designed to encourage violence.” The actions of NRA members and gun owners across America prove these bigoted opinions wrong on a daily basis.

However, the disparity between the anti-gun fever dream and reality is at its most acute each year when NRA members and gun owners gather for the NRA Annual Meet-ings. Those annual meetings just finished. 78,000 Americans attended over four days. Many of them were carrying concealed or open handguns, perfectly legally. There were NO shootouts. There were NO ac-cidents. There were NO problems.

Chicken Little claimed the sky was falling, because an acorn fell on his head. He was wrong, and he had no credibility. The gun controllers have lied to us for 20 years and more. They have been wrong, every time. They have no credibility. Not only should they be ignored, their errors and purposeful falsehoods should be pointed out at every opportunity. The sky is NOT falling, and restricting decent Americans from owning and using guns for all legitimate purposes will NOT make anyone safer.

St. Louis Police Chief to good guys:“Leave your guns at home. We have cameras.”St. Louis (Guns Save Life) - St. Louis Metro Police Chief Sam Dotson has a message to the law-abiding good guys of St. Louis fol-lowing three shootings in his city that have left six people perforated: Leave your guns at home.

That’s right. ChiefDotson made the com-ment to local reporters – noting that the department has a network of 400 cameras throughout the city with which to identify criminals.

KMOV reported:“Leave it (guns) at home,” Dotson said. “Don’t give criminals more guns because we already know they are using them.”

He also says police will have access to 400 cameras throughout the city to catch criminals. Police will have access to this information from the new Real Time Crime Center.

No word on how many suspects in the three shootings have been nabbed thanks to that vaunted Real Time Crime Center.

Gabby Giffords advocates gun control will stop terrorists from getting guns(Guns Save Life) - Gabby Giffords, the former Congressman from Arizona nearly killed by a far-left assassin, now heads (figuratively) the Americans for Responsible Solutions.

Giffords’ “ARS” is struggling for relevance in a world dominated by Bloomberg’s family of gun control groups, has offered up its own brain-damaged solution for dealing with terrorism.

On their website, they wrote of their support for gun control legislation to “Make it harder for suspected terrorists to get guns”.

N.J. Governor Christie pardons Shaneen Allen(Breitbart) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has pardoned Shaneen Allen, a mother of two and concealed carry permit owner who was arrested in New Jersey for carrying a weapon in her car.

Remington to fix Model 700-series rifles(Guns Save Life) - A federal judge in Kansas City, MO has blessed a proposed settlement against Remington to fix alleged defects in the trigger connector of millions of rifles. The approval starts the clock on the six-month window for objections to be filed before the settlement is implemented.

Owners of Remington 700-series rifles, in-cluding the models 700, Seven, Sportsman 78, 673, 710, 715, 770, 600, 660, XP-100, 721, 722 and 725, will have their rifles fixed at no charge, according to a CNBC report.

The Support Assault Firearm Elimination and Education of our (SAFER) Streets Act expected to be reintroduced next week by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) would pro-vide gun owners with an incentive to turn in their firearms to local police departments.

[Editor: We realize Rosa’s plan has about as much chance of passage as an im-peachment of Barack Hussein Obama, but it’s nice to think leftists would pay upwards of a hundred million American gun owners $2000 each to surrender a $50 or $100 piece of junk.]

Brady Center’s Attorneys Withdraw from Case Under Cloud of Ethical Lapses(NRA-ILA) - The Brady Center’s Legal Ac-tion Project attorneys Jonathan Lowy and Alla Lefkowitz withdrew from a Wisconsin lawsuit after inadmissible evidence was published on Brady’s website in violation of Wisconsin’s rules of professional conduct concerning trial publicity.

According to an article on the Journal Sen-tinel’s website, Milwaukee County Judge Jeffrey Conen may have given Lowy and Lefkowitz the benefit of the doubt when he said, “I don’t how things are practiced in Washington, D.C., or New York or anywhere else, but out here in the Midwest we have certain rules.” Judge Conen’s reference to Washington, D.C. and New York was likely due to those being the jurisdictions of Lowy’s and Lefkowitz’s bar membership, respectively.

News Roundup Kansas enacts “Constitutional Carry”Topeka, KS (kansas.com) - Kansans will be able to carry a concealed weapon without a permit or training under a bill signed by Gov. Sam Brownback on Thursday.

SB 45, which kicks in July 1, will make Kansas the sixth state in the nation to allow “constitutional carry.” It will allow Kansans 21 or older to carry concealed firearms regardless of whether they’ve obtained a permit.

Mississippi governor signs sweeping concealed carry reformsJackson, MS (Sun-Herald) -- Mississippians will not need a state-issued license to carry a concealed gun in a purse, briefcase or other fully enclosed satchel under a bill signed by Gov. Phil Bryant. ...and it will take effect July 1.

The bill also reduces fees for people to receive and renew a concealed-carry license. ...The bill specifies disabled veterans, people on active-duty military service and current or honorably retired law enforcement officers don’t need a license to carry a concealed gun.

Supporters cast the bill as a matter of safety for women who want to carry a gun in a purse without having to get a license.

Bryant also signed Senate Bill 2619, which allows active duty military, veterans and honorably retired law enforcement officers to substitute their military service for the state-required eight-hour training course to obtain the enhanced carry endorsement. In Mis-sissippi, permit holders who complete the training course and receive an endorsement can bring their handguns everywhere except police stations, jails, courtrooms and federal property regardless of gun-free-zone signs.

Ohio now accepts any state’s carry license for visitors(Guns Save Life) - Here’s the announce-ment, right from the Ohio Attorney Gen-eral’s mouth:

Provides that if a person who is not an Ohio resident and has a valid concealed handgun license from another state, regardless of whether the other state has entered into a reciprocity agreement with the Attorney General, and the person is temporarily in Ohio, that out-of-state license will be recognized in Ohio during the time that the person is temporarily in Ohio (R.C. 109.69(B)(3)).

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES(Guns Save Life) - All of the stories on this page involving politicians and their appoin-tees are practical, real-life examples of the consequences of elections.

When we, as gun owners, work together to educate the general public and elect right-minded politicians to office, good things happen. Such is the case in Kansas this month, and also Mississippi and New Jersey (in this instance). Ohio demonstrates how even non-legislative offices, such as Attorney General, can make quite an impact on life for gun owners.

The converse is also true, such as with St. Louis, where the mayor appointed either a dimwit as police chief or a man who cares more for criminals than the law-abiding.

If you’re a member, or at all familiar with Guns Save Life, then you know we con-stantly advocate that people should not only get a gun, but get good training.

“Good training” is expensive - most of the time.

That’s where Appleseed makes a differ-ence.

The Appleseed Project began in 2005, as an attempt to reawaken the Rifleman spirit in America; to help restore us to a time when nearly everyone was a Rifleman.

How to do it? By teaching people to shoot, of course. But just as important, to remind people of what it means to be an American.

In 2006 several Guns Save Life members attended Appleseed shoots, and learned the Rifleman skills and the American heri-tage. But they had to travel a long way to do it. There were only 53 Appleseed shoots that year, and the nearest ones to Central Illinois were in Wisconsin and southern Indiana.

The Guns Save Life board recognized the importance of the Appleseed Project, and committed to helping bring Appleseed to central Illinois. GSL sponsored an Apple-seed Shoot at Darnall’s Ranges in Bloom-ington by agreeing to pick up the range fees ($20 per person over and above the Appleseed fee).

It was a great success - the second largest ever in Appleseed history at the time - and

Guns Save Life-sponsored Appleseed Shoot...JUNE 6 & 7DARNALL’S IN BLOOMINGTON!

Here’s a group shot of the happy shooters and instructors at a previous GSL sponsored Appleseed at Darnall’s in Bloomington.

we’ve brought it back every year since, and this year is no exception.

A good number of Guns Save Life members are now Appleseed instructors of one form or another. Chances are, if you attend a central Illinois Appleseed, you’ll see familiar GSL faces in the Instructor corps; people that you know and trust.

This year the GSL Sponsored Appleseed at Darnall’s will be held June 6 & 7. You can register to attend the shoot or any others by going to Appleseedinfo.org, If you have questions, you can contact John Naese (contact info on page 22).

Q: What’s the difference between being a rifle owner and being a Rifleman? A: About four minutes. If you’re asking “what does that mean?” then you’re just the kind of person who could benefit from attendance at an Appleseed marksmanship and heritage clinic. Even if you do know what we mean by “four minutes”, but you can’t meet that standard, you could benefit too. Everyone - new, semi-experienced, or old hand - can benefit from attending an Appleseed.

For the record, “four minutes” refers to “four minutes of angle”. Shooting accuracy is measured in minutes of angle. A “four minute” shooter could place all their shots within a four inch circle at 100 yards. If you have the skill to shoot at a four minute level of accuracy, you should be able to hit a 20

inch target consistently at 500 yards. Yes, that’s a quarter of a mile.

Q: What’s it cost? A: $60 for adults, for two full days of top notch instruction. $20 for those under age 18. If you can only come one day, the costs are $40 for adults and $15 for those under 18.

Q: Other shooting schools charge hun-dreds of dollars. How do you guys do it so cheap? A: Volunteer instructors, and you bring your lunch. By the way, “volunteer” does not equate to “not very good”. Appleseed instructors are all Riflemen themselves, and have gone through an extensive appren-ticeship. They know very well what they are

Attendees are taught marksmanship from the ground up at an Appleseed. Here the line practices in the prone position; sitting and standing positions are also taught.

about.

Q: What’s with all this history cluttering up the marksmanhip instruction? A: The marksmanship is not the main goal of an Appleseed. The main goal is to awaken the inner American in all of us; to restore America, one person at a time, to be a nation of self-reliant, involved citizens. If you think America is headed in the wrong direction, you CAN do something about it. Come to an Appleseed - and bring a friend.

Set aside the date, and start rounding up family members and friends to attend with you. It’s fun. It’s educational. It’s impor-tant. Get off the couch and get to an Apple-seed this year. You’ll be glad you did.

Shoot like a girl. If you can...

“An influential voice in advancing armed self-defense ‘north of I-80’ ”

by John Boch and Doug Morton(Guns Save Life) - David Grossman is a world famous former West Point professor of psychology and military science who is probably the world’s foremost expert in the study of human aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime.

His research has been ground breaking and two of his books are required reading for many US military members.

Today, he spends a lot of days preaching mindset considerations in a powerful lecture series that attendees describe as some-where between profound and life-changing.

He was at the NRA Convention in Nashville delivering his “Sheepdogs! The Bulletproof Mind for the Armed Citizen” presentation.

It’s so good that the anti-gun leftists sent at least a couple of reporters undercover to take pictures and twist the lecture into a pretzel to proclaim, “‘Killology’ Expert Accidentally Admits NRA Is Creating More Mass Shootings”. It’s obvious he’s effective when the fringe left is going out of its way to discredit him and his message, much as they have done with Chris Kyle of American Sniper fame.

Repeating past mistakesHe opened by talking about how repeat-ing past mistakes, without learning from them, is fool’s play, but that’s exactly what we’re doing when it comes to school safety and by extension public safety in general. Banning good guys with guns from schools makes them easy pickings for lunatics and terrorist fanatics.

In fact, gun control advocates who work to ban good guys with guns everywhere are depriving us of the one thing that’s proven to stop bad guys with evil in their hearts: good guys with guns.

Spree killings, his research suggests, are a direct result not of drugging our kids, but of violent video games that celebrate criminal violence. Back in the early 20th century, nobody wanted to be the “bad guy” in role-playing and games played as children.

Then graphic video games came along, desensitizing children and pre-teens to hor-rific violence. In fact, the games rewarded committing graphic violence. Grand Theft Auto was cited specifically, as players play the role of violent criminals, raping, robbing

and murdering their way through the virtual world.

It’s games like this that affect the develop-ment of young minds. It’s also the same training the military uses to desensitize troops to killing the enemy. Only Grand Theft Auto has no associated “rules” about only committing these acts against the enemy.

Consequently, we get social misfits who have been fed a steady stream of violent video games who one day decide to try to rack up a new “high score” in a public spree killing. Given that most schools are “gun free” by statute and by practical matter that there aren’t enough cops to put one in every school, these lunatics know they will have free rein to commit their atrocities until the cops show up. Of course, they usually self-terminate once meaningful resistance shows up because ultimately, these bullies are really just cowards.

These kids, Grossman says, who gave us elementary school massacres initially, are growing older now and they have since graduated to middle schools, high schools and universities. He says public spree kill-ings are inevitable as well.

It’s not just domestic spree killers that are a threat to our children and society at large. Muslim terrorists, killing in the name of their “Allah”, are also a growing threat here in America if past actions are any indication.

When we finally leave Afghanistan and Iraq, the Muslim extremists will come for our children. They always do.

They are doing it with Russia for the Sovi-ent invasion back in the 1980s. Muslims have attacked thousands of schools, killing tens of thousands of kids in the past few years in that part of the world.

They committed six hundred attacks on “their own” kids in Afghanistan in one year alone! Just think of what they would do to America if they had the opportunity!

A handful of attacks would destroy our way of life. “What parent will send their kid to school after a series of school atrocities committed by Muslim terrorists?” It will cripple our entire economy and way of life.

Unlike American spree killers who off them-selves at the first sign of resistance, these

Muslim fanatics are going to fight fiercely to the death. Negotiation is futile and will only result in additional atrocities and deaths.

Grossman talked about the Beslan school massacre and how terrorists will use fire in addition to guns to maximize the carnage and mayhem.

Armed good guys - including police, ad-minstrators, staff, even the janitor is the an-swer. Quick, decisive violent responses are the only way to save lives. “In ten minutes, you’ll have 100 kids soaked in gas. Give them 30 minutes and you’ll have 500 kids soaked in gas,” Grossman said.

Armed citizens are the answer, because there aren’t enough cops to be everywhere. It took Norway cops two hours to get to the world’s most prolific firearm spree killer and he killed 69 and wounded 120 more before they caught him.

Mental preparation is crucial, Grossman noted. So too are practical skill develop-ment and maintenance. Competitive shooting, hunting, target shooting, training... they all help make you better. So do airsoft, paintball and martial arts. At the same time you must be aware of your surroundings and carry life-saving tools (weapons) with which to thwart evil.

We are at war with terrorists and lunatics.

Our motivation is our children, Grossman said. “Who wouldn’t take a bullet for your kids to protect them?” he asked. Good guys prepare because we don’t want to leave our kids a legacy of death, despair and darkness. We are determined not to be the generation that loses our nation and our freedom.

Don’t give up on our nation, we’ve been through trying times before. Good guys pulled us through.

“Piss on golf,” he said to chuckles. He said if you’ve got 20,000 rounds squirrelled away, you need to be shooting that, for the one bullet you fire at the moment of truth is the only one that counts. “Is it perfect because you practiced with those other 19,000 rounds?”

Grossman said that if you have no pro-pensity for violence yourself, then you’re doomed. If you eschew violence, you’re a sheep and you’re going to get slaughtered

by violent predators. “Baaaa,” he chuckled.

It takes a predator to stop a predator.

In addition to sheep, there are predators and sheepdogs. The sheepdogs are in-deed predators, but unlike criminal preda-tors, sheepdogs have empathy and a love for the lambs.

Grossman was very animated during his presentation, driving points home.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder MitigationResearch shows that after 60 straight days of combat, 98% of people will have psy-chological problems. What about the other 2%? 1% were crazy before they started combat. 1% survive and are strengthened.

Who doesn’t get PTSD? Prisoners of War, Holocaust survivors. And people defending their children/family.

Resiliency is critical, along with the belief/ faith that you are needed and are doing the right thing. Believe in yourself, don’t second guess yourself.

Don’t worry about what you cannot control. Focus on what you can control/do.

Training helps a lot. In the moment of crisis, if you do the right thing as you have been trained (or try to do the right thing and fail), you are less likely to get PTSD.

DenialDenial has no survival value, Grossman noted repeatedly. In fact, it kills you twice: 1. You can’t stop the bad person. 2. You then live with the guilt for life.

It was standing room only in a room rated for 746 people to hear Grossman’s out-standing presentation on mindset.

Grossman continued from page 17.

Preparation, on the other hand, saves you twice: 1. You can defend/stop the bad person. 2. You can live with yourself after the fact.

A positive attitude is tremendously impor-tant. Attitude will affect your performance. For instance, if you believe that combat will destroy you, then it probably will.

You must believe combat will make you stronger. Nietzsche said, “If it doesn’t kill me, it only makes me stronger.” The whole concept of post-traumatic growth comes from the Bible (Rom 5:3-5):

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribula-tion brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us

World War II vets demonstrated this. They persevered and were stronger for it. This made them the “greatest generation”.

The returning Iraq & Afghanistan vets are our next “greatest generation” for the same reason.

What happens at the moment you defend yourself? 20% lose bowel/bladder control. Less likely if you have prepared/trained. Don’t worry about it. Just change your clothes and move on.

Some people have a “selfish” self-preserva-tion response, which is also common during violent encounters and may cause guilt/shame after the fact. This response is ab-solutely normal. We are built this way. You should not feel guilty or ashamed about it.

While the bullets are flying, most folks have

auditory exclusion and don’t hear the shots. Once again, this is normal. Tunnel vision and time moving in “slow motion” are also very common. Knowing about these and understanding that they are normal will help you during the encounter and in the aftermath.

Also common under extreme stress, memory gaps, inaccurate memories and hallucinations (i.e., remembering things that didn’t actually happen).

It’s customary for cops to wait a day or two before giving a statement. You should do the same.

You will also have heightened reactions to some stimuli. These are normal self-preservation responses. Recognizing these responses, knowing they are normal will help you deal with them. Understanding that you are not going crazy is key.

Beware of the extremes of self pity and the macho man who won’t get help. Get help if you need it. You must believe that getting help will indeed be helpful for it to work.

PTSD is very treatable. The key is separat-ing the memories from the emotions associ-ated with the memories.

You can’t deny or erase the memories. You must think about them and make peace with them. This won’t happen all at once. You must work through it. If you have a visceral reaction (heart racing, adrena-line release, nausea, etc.) then take deep breaths.

Drinking water as you allow the visceral reaction to pass is very important. Drink-ing is only done when you are safe. Taking a drink and breathing slow deep breaths signals your nervous system that you are safe and helps you dissociate the emotion from the memory.

Grossman also tackled the common lies

about combat vets. They aren’t suicidal - the biggest risk factor for suicide is sleep deprivation. They are not murderers and in fact, are only 10% as likely to murder as the general population. And 40% don’t have PTSD - the true number is easily in the single digits.

If you have a deadly force encounter, then you too will be the “experienced veteran”. You can help others be better prepared at that point.

Why do the good guys win? Because of sheep dogs - people who will selflessly put everything on the line, stand out in front and said, “It’s safe behind me.”

Heroes don’t sacrifice their lives, they live lives of sacrifice.

Might is not strength. Compassion is not weakness.

Courage and honor will defeat hate and terror.

Hoodlum tries throat slash Victim has gun, shoots backLa Vergne, TN (BearingArms.com) - The owner of Discount Tobacco & Beer in La Vergne, TN had closed up his store as usual Monday night. While taking the trash out around 10:35pm, he says a man came from behind the store and asked if they were still open.

When he said the store was closed, the man immediately pulled a box cutter and cut the owner’s neck. The store owner, who has a concealed carry permit, drew his gun and shot the attacker and would-be robber.

The suspect ran from the scene and was found dead a short distance away by a K9 Unit, said Kathy Tyson, a La Vergne Police Department Spokesperson. The suspect’s name is not being released pending notifi-cation of his family and the store owner was treated on the scene.

Jeffersontown Police say a white male attempted to rob Kute’s Liquors on Watter-son Trail Friday night. He pulled a gun and ordered the clerk to the back of the store, but the clerk pulled his own gun as well.

According to police, when the attempted robber pointed his gun at the clerk, the clerk shot him in the chest.

Young punks wanted no part of feisty armed AmericanTulsa, OK (Guns Save Life) - 92-year-old Twylia Smock wasn’t going to let a couple of young punks commit a home invasion. Even though she was legally blind, and the would-be intruders probably knew it, they didn’t want any part of her gun.

After getting her gun, she went to the door where they were still trying to break in.

“I got up close to the door and said, ‘Come on in, boys! The police won’t take you away, the morgue will. I’ll take care of you,’” Smock told them, according to Oklahoma’s “News on 6”.

The hoodlums ran off.

Quintavious absorbed some hot lead before he expired. One of the men in the apart-ment was grazed by one of Reed’s shots.

Bring a brick to gunfight? Harris County, TX (KPRC) - A woman’s ex-boyfriend was shot to death after he showed up at her house attempting to at-tack her and her new boyfriend with a brick, according to Harris County Sheriff’s office.

The ex-boyfriend showed up to his ex-girl-friend’s house in the 11000 block of Canyon Star in northwest Harris County with a brick in hand attempting to attack the new couple early Wednesday morning, according to HCSO.

Officers say the woman’s new beau had a gun and shot the man to death.

Joshua Anderson stepped in during a fight between the men Tuesday night at a beach pier in Port St. Lucie, located along Florida’s Atlantic coast. During the alterca-tion, one of the men, later identified as Brett Jowers, allegedly pushed the pregnant girlfriend of the second man, Zachery Sly, to the ground, NBC affiliate WPTV reported.

Anderson, 29, “saw a woman being at-tacked at night, and he went to her aid,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said at a news conference. “In my opinion, I think he did the right thing.”

Anderson warned the men to back off, but when they threatened to jump on him, he shot each of them in the torso, Snyder added. “You don’t have an obligation to al-low yourself to be attacked,” the sheriff said.

Freedom’s Forum

Good judgment comes from experience - and experience

comes from bad judgment - old saying

There’s a large element of truth in that old saying. Experience makes you better.

Do you drive a car better now than the first day you got behind the wheel? Do you ride a bike better now than the first time you tried to ride? Of course you do.

All the same rules apply to guns and self defense. If you had never driven a car before, could you drive one at high speed through traffic to get a loved one to a hospital in an emergency? Maybe, but I wouldn’t bet on your success.

Shooting and gun handling are perishable skills. Again using the driving analogy, if you take driver’s ed as a teenager, and then never drive again for 40 years, are you going to be a good driver in an emergency?

The safety rules of gun handling - keep the muzzle in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot, don’t load the gun until it’s in use or in service - apply across all shooting disciplines, from casual plinking to shooting sports to advanced training. The more experience you have - at any kind of shooting - the better your judgment and skills will be when it comes to gun handling.

So you need to practice gun handling. Regularly. It doesn’t have to be a chore, and it can be a lot of fun. Find a sport, discipline, or event you’re interested in and have at it. You can even dry fire at home!

Problem solved? Not if you’re going to rely on a gun for your defense if all else fails. In order to be good at defense, you need experience. But as we know, experience can come from bad judgment and mistakes. But using bad judgment in a real defensive situation can get you or a loved one killed, or get you sent to prison. How to solve that dilemma?

By getting some experience!

Let your bad judgment and mistakes happen on the practice field, in safe conditions, and the experience you gain can be put to good use if the worst should ever happen. Find a training class that talks, and practices, for real world scenarios, not just the mechanics of punching holes in a piece of paper.

Much of what I refer to here can be practiced without a gun in your hand. You can practice your awareness skills

every time you leave the house (see the John Boch’s Tech Time on page 3). You can also “war game” scenarios in your head. Look around you; if an attack happened now, where would you move? Where’s cover or concealment? Where are the exits? At home, if a home invader was kicking in your door, what room is your safe room? How would you access a gun, and what would you use for cover?

You can practice verbal commands when you’re home alone, in the shower. “INTRUDER! YOU’RE IN MY HOUSE! LEAVE NOW! I’VE CALLED THE POLICE! IF YOU COME IN HERE, I WILL SHOOT!” Or the commands you might use on street or in the mall: “STAY BACK!!” [open hand out in front of you in a clear “stay back” gesture]. “GO AWAY, STAY AWAY FROM ME!”

Using an EMPTY gun, practice drawing at home (in a safe dry-fire area, with NO ammo present). Wear the gun as you would in the real world, covered by clothes. Practice accessing it, obeying the gun safety rules. Watch for wasted movement and proper safety in your bathroom mirror.

At the range, you can practice other skills besides precision shooting. Fire two rounds, then break tunnel vision. Look left, look right, look all the way behind you (keeping the gun pointed safely downrange!). Bad guys often travel in pairs or packs; train yourself to look around for accomplices or partners.

If your range situation allows, practice firing from cover or concealment. Something as simple as a cardboard box will do; you can imagine it to be anything you want. Just practice moving to it and shooting around it, exposing as little of yourself as possible to the target.

Again, if your range situation allows, and you can do it safely, practice shooting with an elevated heart and respiration rate. For example, you could leave your gun with your shooting partner, run (or sprint if you’re under 40) 50 yards and back, and immediately pick up your gun and

try to get some center-mass shots. The elevated heart rate will help you practice for when a real world situation arrives and your body reacts with an adrenaline dump and a racing heartbeat.

Practice ball and dummy drills (that’s not the same as playing ball with low-information types) with a revolver, or malfunction clearing with your semi-auto. Practice shooting one handed, both strong and support hand.

What will you discover when you practice? There’s not much cover in most homes. (Lots of concealment, but not so much cover). Yelling is embarrassing, even if you’re alone. Breaking tunnel vision, while keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction, is hard, until it becomes a habit. Drawing from under your clothes does not go like it does on TV, at least the first several hundred times you do it. Moving to concealment or cover, crouching or getting down on one knee, is hard and uncomfortable. A quick heart rate will degrade your marksmanship (that’s one reason to practice firing at least two shots in any defensive situation, real or simulated).

So experience comes from bad judgment. Fine. Get your experience in your head, in your home, on the street (situational awareness) and at the range. Use up your “bad judgment” quota on the practice range, and if the worst happens and you find yourself in a defensive situation, your odds of surviving and prevailing will be much greater than they would have been had you not practiced. Good judgment really does come from experience.

Our RebuttalThis communication was sent to the Pontiac Daily Leader’s managing editor, as listed on the newspa-per’s website, in the hours following the publication of Paul Westermeyer’s bigoted screed titled “Gunfire of the Vanities”. In it, Mr. Westermeyer attacked Guns Save Life and our members and friends pres-ent at the April 2015 Pontiac GSL meeting.

Dear Mr. Misener:

Newspapers today are struggling for relevancy and circulation, especially small-town newspapers such as the Daily Leader.

Given today’s economic world, I would think that it’s unwise to shoot yourself in the foot by trash-talking a group of eighty-some upstanding local residents and businessmen celebrating the ideals promoted by our Founding Fathers.

That’s what your reporter Paul Westermeyer did when he visited Guns Save Life’s Tuesday, April 7th meeting for a half-hour before dashing out to write an error-permeated hit piece published today titled “Gunfire of the Vanities”.

I’ll submit a rebuttal to Mr. Paul Westermeyer’s sad screed in the next couple of days.

I hope you’ll give consideration to publishing it.

Publishing a counterpoint to Mr. Westermeyer’s vituperation might be your only hope to not losing additional subscription and ad revenue.

Frankly, if it weren’t for my affinity for Pontiac as my wife’s hometown, I would skip the courtesy of a reply offered for publication.

Your publication enjoys the economic consequences of the signage you post on your front door, and so too with the journalistic tenor found within. Mr. Westermeyer’s “tea bagger” slurs of honorable local residents will not win friends and increase subscrip-tions and ad revenue.

I believe Mr. Westermeyer would be better suited writing for the Huffington Post than the Pontiac Daily Leader.

Editor’s note: Time constraints precluded send-ing a formal rebuttal piece, however in discussions between the managing editor and GSL’s Execu-tive Director, we are optimistic for a more unbiased report in an upcoming issue of the Daily Leader.

Guns Save Life | PontiacThe Pontiac meeting opened to a crowd of the faithful in the mid-eighties, plus a guy who left early on. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Newcomers, save one, intro-duced themselves and were welcomed with applause. John Gahm also took the time to recognize our veterans, of which better than half the attendees remained standing to be applauded for their service.

It was a good meeting, as GSL’s Executive Director rattled off a whole series of great news for gun owners nationwide. He was very upbeat, and excited about leaving for the NRA convention in Nashville later in the week.

Main SpeakerHOOAH Deer Hunt for HeroesOur main speakers were Matt Graden and Tom Huffington from HOOAH - Deer Hunt for Heroes. They introduced themselves to the audience and explained their program that helps wounded American soldiers transitioning out of the military with some of their mental healing before they return to the civilian world. HOOAH stands for Healing Outside of a Hospital and the local HOOAH group - working with the main organization out of Ft. Campbell, KY - takes these men out in the great outdoors for some camaraderie and good times, irre-spective of their physical disabilities.

They may fish or hunt deer, turkey, upland birds or maybe just talk and bond with other former servicemen or other volunteers. For many of the wounded warriors, the experi-

ence is described as cathartic and deeply valued and appreciated. For the local volunteers, it’s similarly rewarding to help men who so selflessly volunteered to serve their country and suffered service-ending war-time injuries.

We showed the short video from last year’s multi-day deer hunt and following that, passed the hat. After the event, another couple donated another hundred dollars, and the HOOAH guys walked away with $850 towards future events. The program is all volunteers and relies on smaller, individual donations and word-of-mouth for fund-raising.

HOOAH Golf OutingAfter that, GSL’s Wendy Boch stood up and pitched the upcoming HOOAH Deer Hunt for Heroes Golf Outing coming to the Pon-tiac Country Club on Saturday, September 26th. She’s co-organizing the event and it should be a great time and it’ll be an oppor-tunity to raise some substantial money for HOOAH. She’s looking for hole sponsors and golfing participants, with her goal of having 20 foursomes for the event.

It’s her birthday, but this is one year she’s not complaining about being tied up on that special day.

Bear St. Pierre / CTOBear St. Pierre was also on hand, not in his role as GSL’s President, but as the head honcho of Cross Trail Outfitters, a group that takes at risk young men from single-

parent households and helps mold them into strong Christian men.

Among their activities is their summer camps and CTO is conducting a fund-raising draw-ing to raise money to help pay for the kids - especially those from needy families - to par-ticipate. There are three prizes and you select which prize you wish to be considered for when you buy a ticket. There’s a Savage 20-gauge slug gun (a model known for its phenome-nal accuracy), a PSE compound bow and a new iPad.

Bear joked that there aren’t many tickets in the iPad bucket currently, as most folks buying tickets thus far have been more “outdoor sports inclined”.

Tickets are $10 each, 3 for $25 and 15 for $100. The drawing will be held in August, but don’t wait too long. There are only so many tickets that have been printed.

We have guns at Guns Save Life meetings. Really neat guns. That’s a really nice RPD rifle! Oh yeah, and behind it, D’lige and Bear from CTO.

Daniel Parcher from South Post Guns brought the DSA imported Polish-made RPD rifle. We’re pretty sure it made at least one attendee piddle himself in fear before he left.

Tech TimeThe Star of Tech Time was a brand new Polish manufactured RPD rifle, imported by the fine folks at DSArms. The rifle, which takes 100-round drum magazines is belt-fed and chambered for the 7.62x39 Russian. It comes with two drums and a host of acces-sories.

Gun Drawing. We drew for the monthly gun, a rather nice pistol provided by South Post Guns, but your faithful scribe neglected to write down the winner’s name (who wasn’t present).

Next month’s gun is a Kel-Tec PMR-30. Very, very nice. Tickets are available at South Post Guns in Streator or at next month’s Pontiac meeting.

Or you can mail a check for the requisite number of tickets (at $5 each) to GSL, PO Box 51, Savoy, IL 61874-0051. Include a SASE if you want your stubs back. The drawing will be Tuesday, May 5th.

Thanks to South Post for providing it!

THE

BLACKOUTK I L L E R

by John BochAmerica has long been known as a place where, with a little know-how and Ameri-can ingenuity, a person can build a better widget.

One of our members has done just that.

For three years, Guns Save Life member Chris Betley has worked on something better for competitive use from the 5.56mm AR-15 platform.

He’s invented a new cartridge, the .300 Su-per, that is notably superior to the already impressive .300 AAC Blackout that’s been taking the shooting world by storm.

Why is the .300 Super Chris Betley’s Holy Grail?

It has about 11% more case capacity than the Blackout, giving it a lot of extra horse-power (otherwise known as foot-pounds of energy) in a flatter-shooting cartridge.

Out of a 14.5” Bartlein 5R barrel (with a 1:11 quarter-twist), Betley’s .300 Super loaded with a 150gr. Sierra Match King bullet sizzles out at nearly 2500 feet per second. He says the rifle’s 25-meter zero is also dead on at 500 meters, making it very desirable for competitive shooters or those seeking a flat-shooting, accurate cartridge approaching .308/7.62x51 ballistics with fairly tame recoil on compensator-equipped rifles.

Not only does the Super eclipse the rifle performance of the .300 Blackout, it also runs circles around the Blackout when fired from the pistol-length barrels.

.300 Super:150gr. bullet, 14.5” barrel2500 feet per second

Above: The .300 Super in a mil-spec AR-15 magazine above a .300 Blackout round. The Super offers substantially improved performance for those seeking a flat-shooting, hard-hitting .30 caliber projectile out of an otherwise standard AR-15 platform.

Out of a 7” pistol barrel, it handles nicely, launching rounds that impact with author-ity while maintaining a flat trajectory. For instance, the bullet drop from 100 to 200 meters is 1.5”, notably less than the .300 AAC Blackout.

“I needed something that would knock down a 40-pound 6-inch plate at 200-meters. This does that and more with ease,” he said of a .300 Super loaded with a 135-grain bullet for the pistol configuration. It sends hot lead downrange at about 2200 feet per second - out of that 7” barrel. That’s significantly better performance and muzzle energy than a .300 Blackout from a 16” barrel.

Even better, it easily shoots under one minute-of-angle.

For dealing with asocial, two-legged var-mints, the .300 Super can be loaded with Hornady GMX ballistic tip bullets which offer devastating expansion for impressive stopping power. The same bullet will work just dandy for most four-legged crit-ters as well. Just don’t use it for small game. Application of the .300 Super loaded with GMX bullets on Easter bun-nies, tree rats or raccoons will leave a pink mist and bloody chunks, not tasty meat.

The great thing about the .300 Super is that like the Blackout, it works in standard AR-15 magazines and AR rifles. The only change is the barrel.

It functions in full-auto applications as well.

From left: .300 Super, .300 AAC Blackout, and a 5.56x45 round for compari-son purposes.

Mr. Betley notes that those who are really looking for a competitive edge can use black nitrite-treated barrels. With this new process, shooters can pick up an additional 200 feet per second over chrome-lined bar-rels, which would make the .300 Super an even more awesome round.

People, including his fellow shooters on the professional shooting circuit are taking note of this new cartridge.

What’s more, so are commercial firearms companies. Our guy has already lined up a company that will produce the brass and is in negotiations with another company to handle commercial production of new ammunition. Also, large police agencies are making inquiries as well, realizing that the new round will offer performance vastly more powerful than anything currently on the market in the 5.56mm AR-system.

For now though, he’s making the up-pers on a small scale for those who seek cutting-edge performance from the familiar, America’s favorite rifle platform.

What’s it cost? The rifles will sell for nearly three bills and the ammo will start at about $3 per round. “Sierra Match King bullets are almost a buck a bullet alone,” Betley said of the cost per round. Hornady’s GMX projectiles are easily $2 per round just for the bullet!

What’s his recipe? Betley tells us he doesn’t use any of Colonel Sanders secret herbs and spices, instead relying on H110 or 1680 powder and Wolf small rifle prim-ers.

“You’re using commie primers?” I asked him.

Betley laughed. “They’re hard, to eliminate any chance of inertial detonation,” he said. “And they go bang every time.” The AR-15 has a free-floating firing pin and some softer primers, he explained, have discharged once in a blue moon when a firing pin taps them just right.

For more information on this new round, or inquiries on purchasing your own upper/ammunition/etc, contact Chris at [email protected].

The DEA’s Dirty Little“Cold Consent” Program(Forbes) - Federal drug agents may be ra-cially profiling and unjustly seizing cash from travelers in the nation’s airports, bus stations and train stations. A new report released by the Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Justice examined the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)’s controversial use of “cold consent.”

In a cold consent encounter, a person is stopped if an agent thinks that person’s be-havior fits a drug courier profile. Or an agent can stop a person cold “based on no particu-lar behavior,” according to the Inspector Gen-eral report. The agent then asks people they have stopped for consent to question them and sometimes to search their possessions as well. By gaining consent, law enforcement officers can bypass the need for a warrant.

But after reviewing the DEA’s policies, the Inspector General concluded, “cold consent encounters and searches can raise civil rights concerns.” In one incident, DEA agents cold-stopped an African-American woman at an airport and allegedly subjected her to “aggres-sive and humiliating questioning”; the woman was a Pentagon lawyer and travelling on government business.

By Paul VallandighamUpdated by John BochPolice officers are constrained from “fish-ing expedition” searches of homes, ve-hicles, and persons by the Fourth Amend-ment and a host of court precedent.

Probable cause for a police search ex-ists when the facts and circumstances, known to the police officer at the time of contact, would lead a reasonable person to believe an individual has committed, is committing or is about to commit a crime. Probable cause, or “PC”, can’t come from hunches or suspicion, but must come from specific facts and circumstances.

In short, if probable cause does not exist, a law enforcement official must ask for consent to search if he or she wants to search on a mere hunch or suspicion.

The LEO may be very persuasive (What do you have to hide?) and even decep-tive (I think I smell the odor of drugs. You don’t mind if I look, do you?) in con-vincing an individual to waive their Con-stitutionally protected right to privacy and to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures. Don’t fall for it.

In short, if you ever find yourself being asked to consent to a search, say “NO, I do not consent to a search”. Keep repeating that very line and ask if you are free to go.

There is never an upside to you to consent to a search.

In the words of Paul Vallandigham in 2004:

DO NOT----- I REPEAT--- DO NOT EVER consent to any search by the police. Not of your person, not of your car, your boat, or your home or office. Be polite and courteous, but firm.

Comply with the officers orders, but call your lawyer if they persist in asking and keep your mouth shut.

In a vehicle stop, if the officer moves you, or requires you to drive from the place where you were stopped to any other lo-cation or if he holds you for an excessive length of time to obtain a search warrant or bring a drug sniffing dog, the search will be invalidated, and any evidence seized suppressed.

TRANSPORTING FIREARMS IN ILThere are still 1.7 million Illinois gun own-ers who don’t have a carry license.

All gun owners should know they may be targeted by a tiny few police officers who believe civilians should not have guns. That NRA sticker, a gun magazine (even the kind you read), or other clues may bring the “Do you have any guns or weapons in the car?” question. The question might even come if there are no clues whatsoever, regardless if you have guns in the car or not.

The answer in Illinois is always “NO!” - unless you have a concealed carry license and you are transporting a hand-gun in accordance with that license, in which case you are legally mandated to reveal the presence of a CCW firearm if asked.

If you have a concealed carry license and you’ve left your handgun at home, or it’s in the trunk, or it’s unloaded and en-cased, you’re not obligated to reveal that there are lawfully transported firearms in the vehicle.

Police in Illinois have generally become better trained in the laws relating to

transportation of firearms. However, some officers, even good ones, may have had poor training in the formative years and make inappropriate arrests based upon that faulty training. Save yourself the headache: Unless you have a license and are carrying your CCW firearm or have it in your passenger compartment, the answer is “no, there’s nothing illegal in this car.”

Even the most careful gun owner may have unknowingly committed a technical violation of a local ordinance or little-known state law. Do not set yourself up – preserve your privacy rights by declining consent to search!

Note: Terry v. Ohio is the Supreme Court case that allows officers to “stop and frisk” people for weapons for the officer’s personal safety. However, Terry was based on the officer stopping people in high crime areas, where the officer has observed the person loitering around or otherwise seeming to not be engaged in normal, law-abiding activity. However, the facts and circumstances do not create articulable facts which would justify the officer to believe a crime has been or is being committed. Similar circumstances almost never occur with highway stops for minor vehicle code violations.

You are required to give the officer your driver’s license, your certificate of reg-istration, and an insurance card for the vehicle. Other than that, you don’t have to answer any questions. If the officer insists on asking you questions beyond checking if this is your current address, and do you understand when you are to appear in court and where, ask him if you are under arrest. If he says “no,” then ask him if you are free to go. If he says “yes,” then do yourself a favor and leave!

Paul Vallandigham, one of the found-ers of Guns Save Life’s predecessor organization, was a practicing attorney in Champaign County, Illinois prior to his death in 2012.

JUST SAY ‘NO’ TO SEARCHES

We published a similar article in 2014 and received a long reply from Davenport, IA police officer who does firearms training on the side for the Quad Cities Firearms Training Center.

Here’s an excerpt:

...I was very pleased with what I found in your publication. That is, until I got to page 23. At the top of the page is an ar-ticle titled “Don’t be a dummy! Say “No!” to searches”. This article was evidently produced in the year 2004 by a now de-ceased attorney named Paul Vallandigham. This is impor-tant for a couple of reasons. The first is that since it was written by an attorney, he of course wants to tell everyone

to refuse consent to search when requested by a police officer. I don’t think it takes a Rocket Scientist to figure out that private criminal defense attorneys make their living from defending people ac-cused of crimes. Having their clients consent to a search where contraband is found does not help their case. This is one sided, and does not give the perspective of what a police officer might advise someone who has nothing to hide. That is, however, your perogative to print articles like this. Now, for the second and most alarming aspect of this article. The article was written BEFORE the passing of concealed carry in Illinois. Because of this, at the time it was written, the “advice” given

was lawful. However, since the passing of concealed carry in Illinois, the advice that if asked if there are any guns or weapons in the car the answer is always “No”, would be il-legal! Is it really a good idea to give advice your readers to violate a law that took us so long to get?

Our reply:

[Donnie Pridemore] is correct in rare circumstances.. if they are carrying a loaded firearm on or about their person.

...If you are not covered by the FCCA, you are not required to volunteer that you have a gun – unloaded and encased, for example – to the police officer.

Food & Water StorageAvoiding common pitfalls

by John BochEmergencies never happen at convenient times. Be it a tornado, power outage, winter storm or a health emergency, they seldom happen with meaningful ad-vanced warning.

It’s up to you to be ready for life’s emergencies well before they happen, lest you have to depend on people from the government for assistance.

Yes, there’s one thing you never want to hear: “I’m from the gov-ernment and I’m here to help.”

Emergency planning comes in at least two stages. Short-term emergencies might last a few days, such as a winter storm. Longer-term emergencies might last weeks, such as an infectious disease quarantine.

Priority Number One: Water.Of course, water storage should be at the top of your list. Wheth-er you have plans to store water, or to filter water, you’ll need at least a gallon per day per person in your household and any visitors you might have.

A quick and easy solution for short-term emergencies is to stock a couple cases of bottled water for each person. It’s rela-tively inexpensive, and will store for several years. Keep a few bottles in your car as well, in case of emergencies on the road.

Storing tap water in large quanti-ties requires dedication to rotat-ing your stock, care in handling plastic barrels, and treating it to keep nasties from gaining a foot-hold. In other words, it’s a pain in the butt, but necessary if filtration isn’t a good option for you.

If there is surface water readily available within walking distance, you might consider water filtra-tion capacity instead of tap water storage. You can purchase hiking-style water filters (good for the trunk in your car) or larger “Big Berkey” passive-filtration units. You can even make your own, home-made “Big Berkey” using five gallon buckets and filter car-tridges. Passive filters use gravity instead of pumping by hand to provide clean, potable water. Work smarter, not harder.

There are also newer options, including the “Steri-pens” (good), Sawyer Water Bottle filters and other filtering “straws” (good for drinking, but for other uses such as cooking, not so much) and iodine tablets (yummy. NOT!).

In any event, it’s prudent to keep bottled or tap water on hand for short-term emergencies and have additional water options avail-able for at least two week at the bare minimum. Dehydration is a particularly ugly way to die.

Food.If food were only as easy as water. It’s doubly challenging if you’ve got dietary considerations.

For short-term emergencies, stock some easy-to-prepare, shelf-stable foods (no refrigera-tion needed) that require only heating, or can be eaten cold in a worst-case scenario. Stock low-salt crackers, whole grain cereals and canned foods with high liquid content.

It will be stressful enough in an emergency. It won’t be a good time to offer up an entirely alien menu to your family.

Canned soups and stews make good choices, along with peanut butter, jelly and crackers, shelf-stable canned meats and pre-cooked bacon, powdered milk, cereal (hot and cold) are some quick and easy options for meal preparation when there is no electricity / refrigeration available. Buy yourself a camping stove if you don’t like to eat your soups and stews cold.

Military “MREs” or Meals Ready to Eat (or Meals Rejected by Ev-eryone) aren’t bad to eat for most of us and are fairly well-balanced nutritionally. There are other similar foods available at camping supply stores as well, but make sure you’re stocking sufficient calories.

Store your emergency foods in a cool, dark place. Avoid the attic, or a place in the basement that might be flooded if the sump pump fails.

A couple of considerations for food storage, especially longer-term plans...

Calories: Most folks need a mini-mum of 2,000 calories per day, and as much as double that if they are working hard.

Watch those calorie counts! At German concentration camps dur-ing World War II, internees were fed about 1500 calories per day. In a matter of a few short weeks they were emaciated, and in three months, some had already succumbed to starvation. Don’t make that your food storage plan.

Quality: Your body needs carbohydrates, proteins and fats, along with vitamins. If you have dietary re-strictions, such as diabetic issues, you can’t rely on a carbohydrate-heavy food storage plan.

Nitrogen-packed foods and dehy-drated foods are often short on calories, so be careful.

Textured vegetable protein foods, such as imitation beef, etc., are made with soybeans, and soy is rich in phytoestrogens. Con-sumption of these foods and their estrogen-like components in significant quantity by pregnant women or men can have unwant-ed side effects, such as miscar-riage, trashing sperm counts, erectile dysfunction and breast development in men.

While sperm counts and erec-tions might not be high on your list of worries in an emergency, I guarantee a miscarriage would be psychologically devastating, and developing breasts in men is pain-ful to say nothing of the cosmetic issues.

Tip: Bite the bullet and stock some canned meats. MREDepot.com is a good source. These products will store for up to 25 years, easily. Buy once, cry once and you’ll be good for a decade or more.

VarietyStock a variety of foods. Stock spices and seasonings, including salt. They are a critical compo-nent to adding some variety and zest to your meals. Spices also don’t last forever. Watch those expiration dates for maximum freshness.

Other questions...How much food and water do you need to store? That’s the million dollar question only you can answer. Ready.gov sug-gests three days of non-perishable foods. We recommend a bare minimum of seven days for most folks. Sure, some will say that’s not enough - and it’s not for a really bad event. However, seven days’ of food and water will get you through 99.9% of what life will throw at you without you spending a king’s ransom.

Here are some considerations to enter into the your decision-making:

Money.• How much can you spend? Think of your food and water storage as an insurance plan to provide for your family. At the same time, if you don’t have a few months’ of expenses in cash at home, you might be wise to be slow and prudent in accumulating food.Location.• How long will it be viable to stay in your home following a longer-term emergency? If your neighbors are starving after two weeks and their kids are begging for food, how are they going to react to the smell of bacon and eggs from your place? Desperate people do irratio-nal, desperate things far worse than dirty looks.Space.• Do you have limited space to devote to stored food? You probably won’t want to devote the space to a year’s supply of food for your family. Making a coffee table out of a piece of plywood atop cardboard boxes of long-term storage foods screams W.T., not fashion.Number of people.• Will your mother-in-law or other fam-ily members be joining you and if so, for how long? She’s going to need to eat and drink. As much as you might like to feed her your expired foods and funky water from three years ago, that wouldn’t be polite or proper.

MedicationsIf you’re taking prescription medications, it’s always good to maintain an extra 30-day supply on hand in case an emergen-cy happens the day before you’re supposed to pick up a refill at the pharmacy.

How can you do this? If it’s a narcotic, you’re probably out of luck. For non-narcotics, ask your doctor to write you an extra month’s supply. You may have to pay for it out of your pocket.

An alternative to asking your doctor for an extra 30-day supply (which they may balk at) for non-narcotics is AllDayChemist.com. They stock a myriad of medications at very affordable prices. Shipping is usually $25, so get together with friends and pool your orders. It takes about two weeks for order fulfillment as they ship from India, but it’s the real deal.

If you take medications that will have very deleterious effects on your health if you go cold turkey (some anti-depressants, blood pressure medication, heart meds, or diabetic drugs to name a few), this should be a high priority for you. In fact, having an extra ninety day supply for life-sustaining medica-tions might be a wise and prudent course of action for you and your spouse, unless you’re looking for an early “till death do us part” solution to your unhappy marriage.

Your short list of over-the-counter medications should include: aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, anti-diarrhea medication, antacid, and a laxative.

If your medication is expired, don’t panic. Most medications are still effective for years after the expiration date.

GunNews Magazine - 25 - May 2015

Page 26: e defend your right to defend yourself - Guns Save Life, Inc.at no charge. “The training opportunities available would easily cost you $1000 or more if you went to classes to hear

By Shane ConnorReprinted with permission. Condensed.(ki4u.com) - What possible ‘good news’ could there ever be about nuclear destruc-tion coming to America, whether it is Dirty Bombs, Terrorist Nukes, or ICBM’s from afar?

In a word, they are all survivable for the vast majority of American families, IF they know what to do beforehand and have made even the most modest of prepara-tions.

Tragically, though, most Americans today won’t give much credence to this good news, much less seek out such vital life-saving instruction, as they have been jaded by our culture’s pervasive myths of nuclear un-survivability.

Most people think that if nukes go off then everybody is going to die, or it’ll be so bad they’ll wish they had. That’s why you hear such absurd comments as; “If it happens, I hope I’m at ground zero and go quickly.”

This defeatist attitude was born as the dis-armament movement ridiculed any com-peting alternatives to their ban-the-bomb agenda, like Civil Defense. The activists wanted all to think there was no surviving any nukes, disarmament was your only hope. The sound Civil Defense strategies of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s have been derided as being largely ineffective, or at worst a cruel joke. Since the supposed end of the Cold War in the 80’s, most Americans saw neither a need to prepare, nor believed that preparation would do any good.

Today, with growing prospects of nuclear terrorism, and nuclear saber rattling from rogue nations, we see emerging among the public either paralyzing fear or irrational denial. People can’t even begin to envision effective preparations for ever surviving a nuclear attack. They think it totally futile, bordering on lunacy, to even try.

The biggest surprise for most Americans, from the first flash of a nuke being un-leashed, is that they will still be here, though ill-equipped to survive for long, if they don’t know what to do beforehand from that very first second of the initial flash onward.

For instance, many could readily survive the delayed blast wave via the old ‘Duck & Cover’ tactic, and that is very good news, IF they knew to do it quick as the flash appeared.

Unfortunately, most don’t, and even fewer know how to later survive the coming ra-dioactive fallout which could eventually kill many times more than the blast. However, there is still more good news possible, as well over 90% of those potential casual-

ties from fallout are avoidable, too, IF the public was pre-trained through an aggres-sive national Civil Defense educational program.

Simple measures taken immediately after a nuclear detonation, by a pre-trained pub-lic, can prevent agonizing death and injury from radiation exposure.

...Today, lacking any meaningful Civil De-fense program, millions of American fami-lies continue to be at risk and could perish needlessly for lack of essential knowledge that used to be taught at the grade school level.

Duck & CoverThe public at large, businesses and all our children’s schools, urgently need to be in-structed in Civil Defense basics again. Like how most can save themselves by immedi-ately employing the ‘Duck & Cover’ tactic, rather than just allowing an impulsive rush to the nearest windows to see what that ‘bright flash’ was across town, just-in-time to be shredded by the glass imploding in-ward from that delayed shock wave blast.

Most also don’t know, even when caught in the open, just lying flat, reduces by eight-fold the chances of being hit by debris from that brief, three second, tornado strength shock wave blast that, like lightning & thunder, could be delayed arriving anywhere from a couple seconds to 2 minutes after that initial flash.

‘Duck & Cover’, while under-appreciated by most Americans, has long been known as a simple and effective shock wave blast life-saver, even as early as Hiroshima (15 KT) and Nagasaki (22 KT).

While terrorist nukes would likely be smaller than the Hiroshima (15 KT) bomb, in a modern super power conflict today, the nukes would be larger, most in the 100 KT to 500 KT range. The unsurvivable ‘ground zero’ lethal zone of a 500 KT nuke airburst, would extend out to about 2.2 miles. The blast wave would arrive at that 2.2 mile marker about eight seconds after the flash and then continue on causing death or injury from there out to about 9 miles. Putting at grave risk then an ad-

ditional over 15 times more souls than were already lost within that unsurvivable 2.2 mile ground zero radius. That’s IF they don’t know to ‘Duck & Cover’ in those 8 to 20+ seconds after the flash and before the blast wave arrived. In other words, with ‘Duck & Cover’ taught to and employed by all, there could be over 15 times fewer casualties from that blast wave!

Clearly, prompt ‘Duck & Cover’, upon any bright flash suddenly appearing, is lifesav-ing good news everyone should be taught!

Sheltering from FalloutThey need to also be taught, after the blast, attempting to outrun that downwind drift of the fallout is strongly discouraged. It only works if wind direction, speed, and distance from ground zero is known and assures plenty enough time to escape ex-posure in the open well before the fallout would arrive along their, likely clogged, route. They must also be taught, shelter-ing-in-place is usually the better option, as the radioactive fallout loses 90% of its lethal intensity in the first seven hours and 99% of it in two days. For those requiring sheltering from fallout, the majority would only need two or three days of full-time hunkering down, not weeks on end, before safely joining an evacuation, if even still necessary then.

That’s more good news as an effective expedient fallout shelter can easily be im-provised at home, school or work quickly, but, again, only IF the public had been trained beforehand in how to do so, as was begun in the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s with our national Civil Defense program.

Unfortunately, our government today is doing little to promote nuclear preparedness and Civil Defense instruction among the general public. Regrettably, most of our politicians, like the public, are still captive to the same illusions that training and preparation of the public are ineffective and futile against a nuclear threat.

...Civil Defense pre-training of the public is clearly the only hope for those in the blast zone and later in the fallout path.

...The current Obama admin-istration also fails to grasp that the single greatest force multiplier to reducing potential casualties, and greatly enhanc-ing the effectiveness of first-responders, is a pre-trained public so that there will be far fewer casualties to later deal with.

...The federal government needs to launch a national mass media, business sup-ported, and school based effort, supersed-ing our most ambitious public awareness campaigns like for AIDs, drug abuse, drunk driving, anti-smoking, etc. The effort should percolate down to every level of our society.

...[A] trained and prepared public can, and ultimately has to, save themselves. More training of the public beforehand means less body bags required afterwards, it’s that simple.

The tragic After Action Reports (AAR’s), of an American city nuked today, would glar-ingly reveal then that the overwhelming majority of victims had perished need-lessly for lack of this basic, easy to learn & employ, life-saving knowledge.

Re-launching Civil Defense training is an issue we hope & pray will come to the forefront on the political stage, with both parties vying to outdo each other propos-ing national Civil Defense public educa-tional programs...

There is no greater, nor more legitimate, primary responsibility of any government than to protect its citizens. And, no greater condemnation awaits that government that fails to, risking millions then perish-ing needlessly. We all need to demand renewed public Civil Defense training and the media needs to spotlight it by ques-tioning officials and politicians, until the government corrects this easily avoidable, but fatal vulnerability.

In the meantime, though, don’t wait around for the government to instruct and prepare your own family and community. Educate yourself today and begin estab-lishing your own family nuclear survival preparations by reading the free nuke prep primer...

Flammable storage guidelinesWhile anyone can store flammables for emergencies, there are some safety rules you should be aware of.

While you can ignore the following Na-tional Fire Protection Association guide-lines, be advised that your homeowners insurance will likely not honor your claim if you have a fire and your flammables are in-volved. Furthermore, if someone is injured in a fire related to your improperly stored flammables, you will be held liable.

From the 2000 edition of the NFPA codes:

The following is meant to be a guideline to help you know what is safe and within the local laws. Please consult your local fire de-partment for more complete information.

Question: Can I store emergency fuel con-tainers inside my home, basement, and/or attached garage?

Answer: No! Generally speaking, we ask that you only store emergency fuel containers in a detached shed or garage to minimize fire hazards and ignition sources. Two or three 1-gallon DOT rated containers for gasoline, and 2-cycle fuel for general operation of lawn maintenance equip-ment. We have experienced many serious problems with larger quantities of fuel in-side homes, basements, attached garages, and carports.

Question: Can I store as many containers as I want in my garden shed or unattached garage?

Answer: No. Depending on the type of fuel (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and propane), you are only allowed to store limited quantities of each type of fuel, in certain kinds and sizes of containers. See the guidelines below.

Question: What authority does the fire department have to tell me what I can and cannot do I my own home?

Answer: The legal authority comes from fire prevention related portions of the State Code and local city and county ordinances. This really is a life safety (your life safety) issue. Also your homeowner’s insurance provider would like you to keep the quantities of flammable liquids stored at your residence to a bare minimum.

Storage of Flammable Liquids (Gasoline and Coleman White Gas)Maximum residential storage of flammable liquids (gasoline and white gas) shall be limited to 25 gallons; preferably stored in an unattached garage or shed. Of this 25 gallon total, no more than 10 gallons can be stored in an attached garage; and ab-solutely no flammable liquid storage is al-lowed in basements. (2000 IFC 3404.3.4.4, NFPA 30)

Empty containers shall be counted as full

ther away than 50 feet. (2000 IFC 3403.2.1, 906.3)

Control of ignition sources is mandatory! All transfer and dispensing of combustible liquids requires careful attention be paid to eliminating static spark discharge, and ignition of flammable vapors. Open flames and high temperature devices must be controlled and approved for use with flam-mable/combustible liquids. And smoking is prohibited in the storage area. (2000 IFC 3405.3.2, 3404.2.4)

Portable Kerosene heating appliances shall be (UL) listed, and shall be limited to a fuel tank capacity of 2 gallons. (2000 IFC 603.4, 603.4.1) However, the Uniform Fire Code (Article 61) specifically prohibits the use of these unvented heating appliances in occupied living spaces. If you decide to use these devices, closely follow the manufac-turer’s instructions for use, always main-tain adequate separation from combustible surfaces, maintain good ventilation in order to prevent carbon monoxide poison-ing, and use a battery powered Carbon Monoxide detector to detect dangerous conditions.

Home Storage of Flammable Gases (Propane and Butane)Residential Propane storage issues are more complex than those for flammable and combustible liquids. If you want a per-manent LP-Gas system and tank installed, county ordinance allows you up to 2000 gallons capacity in heavily populated areas, provided you obtain a permit, comply with relevant installation codes, and hire a state licensed contractor to perform the work

and supply the equipment. However some cities have passed local ordinances that restrict total LP-Gas capacity to 500 gallons or less, where natural gas service is readily available. Please contact any state licensed Propane supplier, under “Gas-Propane” in the yellow pages, for more information regarding permanent Propane gas installa-tions. (2000 IFC 3803, 3804)

For portable DOT tank storage, you are allowed up to 25 gallons total capacity. You could have up to five 5-gallon (20 lb.) portable appliance cylinders (the size usually found on barbecue grills – DOT 4BA240); or one 23 gallon (100 lb.) cylinder (DOT 4b240), in storage at your home, in an unattached garage or shed. But, if you want to store propane and flammable/combustible liquids together, they should be separated by at least 10 feet. (2000 IFC 3809.12)

You are only allowed to store up to two (2) of the small portable 1–pound disposable propane cylinders inside your home or at-tached garage. All other propane cylinders storage must be outside your home in an unattached garage or shed.

Propane cylinders attached to heating and/or cooking appliances, as well as those mounted on trailers, motor homes, and campers, do not count towards your total storage capacity.

Unattached or empty cylinders are counted as being full for purposes of calculating your total storage.

when calculating total storage capacity. (2000 IFC 3404.3.3.4)

Flammable liquid storage containers shall be of an approved type. (2000 IFC 3404.3.1.1) Most of these containers are labeled as approved for flammable liquid use, and indicate the standards they are designed to meet (DOT, ASTM, NFPA 30, etc.) Always use approved or original retail containers. (No Used Milk Jugs!)

If you decide to store more than 5 gal-lons of flammable liquids at your home, you need at least one 2A10BC rated fire extinguisher, located no closer than 10 feet, and no further than 50 feet. (2000 IFC 3404.3.3.1)

Control of sources of ignition is manda-tory! All transfer and dispensing of flam-mable liquids requires careful attention be paid to eliminating static spark discharge, and ignition of flammable vapors. Open flames and high temperature devices must be controlled and approved for use with flammable liquids. And smoking is prohibit-ed in the storage area. (2000 IFC 3405.3.2, 3404.2.4)

Flammable and Combustible liquids in fuel tanks of motor vehicles (gasoline, diesel and 2-cycle blends) are exempt and therefore not considered as part of your total home fuel storage quantities. (2000 IFC 3404.3.3)

Home Storage of Combustible Liquids (Diesel, Kerosene and Lamp Oil)Maximum residential storage of combus-tible liquids (Diesel, Kerosene and Lamp Oil) shall be limited to 60 gallons; prefer-ably stored in an unattached garage or shed. Of this 60 gallon total, no more than 10 gallons can be stored in an attached ga-rage; and absolutely no combustible liquid storage is allowed in basements. (2000 IFC 3404.3.4.3, 3404.3.5.1, NFPA 30)

Combustible liquid storage containers shall be of an approved type. (2000 IFC 3405.2.4) Most of these containers are labeled as approved for flammable liquid use, and indicate the standards they are designed to meet (DOT, ASTM, NFPA30, etc). (No Used Milk Jugs!)

If you decide to store more than 25 gallons of combustible liquids at home you need at least two 2A10BC rated extinguishers, located no closer than 10 feet, and no fur-

It’s easy! Extend your effective range with small DAO pocket pistols

Pencil eraser “tactical” modification

by John Boch(Guns Save Life) - Do you have a double action only (DAO) semi-automatic pocket pistol? You know, a Keltec P-11 or P3AT, Ruger LCP, S&W Bodyguard .380, or Taurus TCP? You want to make it better without spending a bunch of money? Read on!

Pretty much all of these DAO pocket pistols have a very long, relatively heavy trigger pull. Because of their light weight, they aren’t a lot of fun to shoot, even for experi-enced shooters, so extensive practice is out of the question.

The sights are often marginal and most folks just put them in a pocket as a “just in

case” gun, figuring they’ll use it only at bad breath distances.

Of course, any gun you have on you when trouble happens is better than the best gun left at home.

It’s just that these diminutive guns may be called upon to take a shot more than six feet away as no plan typically survives first contact - such as if a bad guy is wearing armor.

Not to worry. You can easily extend the effective range of these little guns with a simple, do-it-yourself modification.

Here’s how.

First order of business: unload your gun and double check that it’s unloaded. Re-move all ammunition from this designated dry-fire area.

Get yourself a pencil eraser and cut it down to about a quarter-inch in length. Test fit it behind the trigger to make sure that it stops the trigger before the action breaks.

Superglue the eraser onto the frame of the gun and let the glue dry. Go do a chore and give it five minutes. Then borrow your wife’s emery board or nail file and judicious-ly file off the eraser a number of strokes and then double-check that you’re unloaded and

then try pulling the trigger.

Your goal: The trigger will stop when it reaches the eraser, allowing you to stage the trigger while you re-align your sight picture. Applying a few additional pounds of pressure will cause the gun to fire. It’s akin to cocking a double-action pistol for a precision shot.

If you screw up and shave off too much? Pull off what’s left of the eraser, lightly sand off the residue and try again.

You don’t want it so light that you will pull right past the eraser when your adrenaline is pumping, and you don’t want it so heavy that you need a come-along to make it go bang.

When you’ve found that magical length, get a black magic marker and color the eraser black - which, of course, makes this modifi-cation a “tactical” improvement your friends will envy, especially when they see how well it works!

I’ve done this for my double-action-only semi-autos that weren’t lost in my latest boating accident. I’m able to hit a chest plate at 25 yards most shots when pumped up on a little adrenaline. At closer ranges, I fire it one-handed. The modification makes it roughly the same shooting it from either the strong- or support-hand.

On the tiny target pictured on the left, I kept all seven rounds on the tiny “bad guy” at nine feet. Without the modification, keeping the shots on the 8x11 sheet of paper would require both concentration and good form.

Be sure to take your gun out to test fire it with your mod for function and reliability. Ensure you keep your finger off the cotton-pickin’ trigger until you’ve decided to shoot. Test it to make sure the gun runs flawlessly, then take it home, clean it and put it in your carry rig for self-defense carry.

Don’t forget to unload it and blow the dust bunnies out on occasion, and rotate out your carry ammunition, especially the round that has been riding in the chamber at least every three to six months.

BUILD A KITA disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in suf-ficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days.

Additionally, basic services such as elec-tricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages.

MAKE A PLANYour family may not be together when a disaster strikes so it is important to plan in advance: how you will get to a safe place; how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations.

You should also inquire about emergency plans at places where your family spends time: work, daycare and school, faith orga-nizations, sports events and commuting. If no plans exist, consider volunteering to help create one. Talk to community leaders, your colleagues, neighbors and members of faith or civic organizations about how you can work together in the event of an emergency. You will be better prepared to safely reunite your family and loved ones during an emer-gency if you think ahead and communicate with others in advance.

Have a plan for traveling between work and home, and other commonly visited loca-tions, in case of an emergency.

A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

Water, one gallon of water per person •per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitationFood, at least a three-day supply of •non-perishable foodBattery-powered or hand crank radio •and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for bothFlashlight and extra batteries•First aid kit•Whistle to signal for help•Dust mask to help filter contaminated •air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-placeMoist towelettes, garbage bags and •plastic ties for personal sanitationWrench or pliers to turn off utilities•Manual can opener for food•Local maps•Cell phone with chargers, inverter or •solar chargerPrescription medications and glasses•Infant formula and diapers•Pet food and extra water for your pet•Cash or traveler’s checks and change•Important family documents such as •copies of insurance policies, identifi-cation and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container. EDUCATION WORKS! Gun rights top gun control in major public opinion shift(Washington Examiner) - Exactly two years after President Obama’s bid for gun con-trol following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting died in Congress, a new poll has discovered a huge shift in public opinion to backing Second Amendment gun rights and away from controlling gun ownership.

The reason: Americans now believe having a gun is the best way to protect against crime, 63 percent to 30 percent.

Pew Research Center found that while support for gun control once reached 66 percent, it has dropped to 46 percent while support for gun rights has jumped 52 percent, the highest ever in the past 25 years.

“We are at a moment when most Americans believe crime rates are rising and when most believe gun ownership – not gun control – makes people safer,” said the sur-vey.

michaeljbusse626:...while a private citizen may use deadly force to protect himself from the threat of deadly force--a private citizen is not entitled to use deadly force in defense of others--that is the job of the police only--instead, the Uber driver acts as a vigilante that unnecessarily adds to gun violence on our streets-- the States At-torney’s office is WRONG to not charge the driver with attempt murder, the result of which encourages other under-educated,trigger-happy nitwits to try to try their hand at more public gunplay

Concealed carry laws are counterpro-ductive--the 2d amendment should be repealed!

Harleys, guns, and more guns:I wonder why they don’t talk about the negatives to conceal carry cowards? You know, little things like:

-Dramatic increase in suicides-More frequent and deadly road rage incidents-Escalation of arguments from shouting to shooting-Many more opportunities to lose or steal guns-Overall increase in gun violence and murder

…and much more. oh wait, that’s right. None of these fit into the NRA’s fantasy stories.

Chicago CCW licensee interrupts shooting attackChicago (Tribune) - Authorities say no charges will be filed against an Uber driver who shot and wounded a gunman who opened fire on a crowd of people in Logan Square over the weekend.

The driver had a concealed-carry permit and acted in the defense of himself and others, Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said in court Sunday.

A group of people had been walking in front of the driver around 11:50 p.m. in the 2900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue when Everardo Custodio, 22, began firing into the crowd, Quinn said.

The driver pulled out a handgun and fired six shots at Custodio, hitting him several times, according to court records. Responding officers found Custodio lying on the ground, bleeding, Quinn said. No other injuries were reported.
