CONTENTS

Central Sterile Supply Department

To provide solutions for hospital infection,

the CSSD (Central Sterile Supply

Department) has come into place.

A CSSD is like a manufacturing plant for

sterile items. The collection of soiled

items from operation theaters, ICU’s,

wards, out patients department and other

specialties are received by the CSSD

for processing, then returned to the end

users in a sterile state.

The CSSD centralises the sterile

processing activities, in which reusable

medical devices and surgical instruments

and equipment (excluding the operating

theatre procedures) are processed and

issued for diagnostic and patient care

procedures.

Functions and Activities of a CSSD

Receipt: This includes receiving the

materials, supplies and equipment,

dressings and other specialised surgical

items for processing.

Cleaning: This function means cleaning

of the used equipment/materials, rubber

and plastic goods either manually or by

machines eg. ultrasonic cleaner, jet glove

washing machines, washer disinfectors,

anesthetic tubing washers and dryers.

This function may also include cleaning

of the delivery trolleys.

Checking, Assembling and

Packaging: It includes checking of

glass items for breakages, needles and

instruments for sharpness and breakages,

assembling of the equipment after

washing and drying, making sets and

packaging for sterilisation.

Sterilisation: It renders materials

bacteriologically safe for quality patient

care.

Labelling: Easy identification for prompt

and proper use.

Storage: The function includes

storage of sterilised packs, drums and

disposables, dressing materials, spare

parts of machines or sterilisers for routine

maintenance and broken/ unserviceable

items for condemnation. Paper is fast

replacing linen wrappers. Space should

also be provided for storing distribution

trolleys. Sterile store maintains inventory

of all types of sterile packs.

Issue and Distribution: The function

entails issue of the sterilised packages,

dressings, linen, instruments and

disposables to various departments of the

hospitals.

Flexistem is a unique disposable cleaner for all small cannulae. Constructed from very soft

to very hard nylon bristles Flexistem is available in various diameters.

The dispenser ensures the contents are always readily available and a cutter is provided to

facilitate quick and easy cutting to any required length.

A development of Flexistem, Microclene is more brush like and finer. FLEX021 will clean

down to very small diameters and is ideal for Zoellner suction tubes.

Microclene is a fine bore cleaning system for instruments with a very small bore. It can be

used to safely dislodge deposits during the washing process and ensuring that the final

rinse process is very effective. As with all Flexistem products, Microclene can be doubled

over to increase the cleaning diameter or to increase the rigidity of the wire.

Choose the length required, cut with the cutters provided, use and then simply throw away!

A new Wavy Flexistem developed for cleaning the inside of very long instruments where

pushing would normally cause buckling.

are simulating hollow instruments with narrow lumen.

AS/NZS4187 “Informs” the attributes of heat sealing devices. The Seal Test is designed

as a daily Evidence Base Quality Assurance check to confirm that the roller pressure and

temperature are operating within the correct operation parameters.

The result is a quick visual indication of sealer performance and it incorporates simple

documentation.

An entry level model which is simple, hard wearing, reliable and easy to operate. Ideally

suited to medical clinics, dental surgeries, podiatrists and other situations where the daily

packaging requirements are under 500 units.

F108: Basic rotary heat sealer with variable temperature adjustment, pre set self adjusting

pressure and feeder speed. Other features include seal edge adjustment, microprocessor

controlled operation and 15mm seal width.

F108T: Includes a production counter with audible alarm.

F108Ti: Incorporates an automatic insert feed mechanism and reverse transport. The

automatic insert feed starts the transportation mechanism when packaging material is fed

into the machine. A manual reverse transport trigger assists in the aborting of a sealing

run.

F108Tx: Same as the F108Ti but with the production counter and alarm.

FAMOS F108 HEAT SEALERSEntry level model

The F110 series is the most versatile and economical solution to your heat sealing

requirements. A feature packed medium to high use model suited to hospitals and other

large scale health care applications.

F110: Standard model in the series. This machine is totally menu operated with various

functions programmed using the user friendly keyboard and LCD display.

F110D: Built in printer which can print the packaging date, expiry date and alphanumeric

codes on the back of packaging materials.

F110DEP: Option to print twenty characters of additional text next to the data as

mentioned with the F110D and can store up to 255 texts. Has the capability to print dates,

codes and text on an external printer.

F110DBC: Same as the F110DEP with a second printer for additional text or barcodes.

FAMOS F110 HEAT SEALERSMedium to high use model

The 220 Series heat sealers feature temperature, speed and pressure measuring and

monitoring via extra sensors. If at any time a variance outside safe tolerances in any of the

parameters is detected, the operator is alerted and results documented.

F220D: The F220D has a built in printer which can print the packaging date, expiry date

and alphanumeric codes on the back of the packaging materials.

F220DEP: The F220DEP offers the option to print thirty characters of additional text next

to the data as mentioned with the F220D and can store up to 799 texts. The F220DEP

has the capability to print dates, codes and text on an external printer. This model also

includes a COM port for PC programming of text and data.

F220DBC: In addition to the features of the F220DEP, the F220DBC incorporates a second

printer for additional text or barcodes. (Barcodes are generated by commercially available

software via PC connection to the sealer for printing).

The standard packaging material used for packing medical devices sometimes does not

meet with the sizes of the diversity in instruments. For this reason Famos has designed

a roll holder including cutting device to create the length of packaging material that is

required. The rotary knife of the cutting device is made from the highest quality hardened

Double labels with process indicators are developed to provide sterilisation control and

traceability for packages and containers. Labels are available for various sterilisation

conditions and have process indicators to identify which packs have been exposed to the

sterilisation cycle. The labels can also be documented in the patient’s file for records.

Labelling device is specially developed for Famos double labels for marking packages

Clinipak tray tags are manufactured from a special mixture of polymers which provide

strength and rigidity and a secure surface for affixing labels or writing on. Labels with

permanent adhesives should remain in position for up to 3 years. The tags autoclave well

and will not shed or bleach colour.

Three fixing holes enable almost any fixing combination which may be accomplished with

the 2 sizes of ties available.

If tray tags are used loose within a tray, x-ray identification may be necessary and this is

achieved by fixing stainless steel rings to one corner.

The use of these bands is so unlimited, here is just a few ideas:

Hand surgery: during hand surgery a piece of linen is rolled to give a 2” diameter pad

that fits the palm of the hand to support the hand when placed on the table palm down The

roll must be sterile so the band is placed around it to hold it together during autoclaving

prior to use.

Securing instruments: an elastic band can be used to secure long instruments that need

to be bound for storage. The use of non-latex free band can cause problems for patients

with latex allergies. The latex free bands can remain on the product during autoclaving.

By wrapping Clinipak Water Soluble Protection Sheets or Bags around used instrument

trays, potentially hazardous items can be left secure until the decontamination wash

procedure. The wrapped pack can be placed in the washer and the film will dissolve during

the first rinse ensuring the instruments are rinsed adequately during the whole process.

No unpacking or other handling is required and no potential hazardous packing need be

disposed of. Used together with the defoamer included in each pack, trouble free washing

is achieved. Defoamer is best added at the time of wash decontamination and comes in a

measure bottle with full instructions.

A brand new innovation to assist where immediate cleaning of surgical instruments is not

possible. The Humipak is a patented method for preventing the drying out of protein on

instruments whilst awaiting cleaning aimed at meeting the requirements of HTM01-01.

Each Humipak pouch consist of two layers of film, with a highly absorbent material

sandwiched between them and sealed to create a moisture retaining pouch. To use, simply

add a specified amount of water to the pouch, seal and leave to await manual cleaning in

the CSSD.

Clinipak currently offers two designs in the Humipak range. The initial range consists of 2

large pouches, sized to hold either a ‘DIN’ or ‘half-DIN’ sized basket. When sealed using

the self-seal strip, the pouch will retain a moist atmosphere for over 7 days.

The second design consists of 2 multi-pocketed pouches, one with 7 pockets and one

with 4. Once used, the pockets will maintain a humid environment for up to 48 hours.

Additional BenefitsThe transparent film, in addition to maintaining the moist atmosphere, allows the

contents to be clearly observed including any written instructions or contents list,

making it convenient for checking that all items listed are contained within the pack.

Contaminants are contained within the Humipak reducing the risk of transmission.

The sealed pack acts as security bags confirming all the contents have been returned.

The inner absorbent layer on the pocketed Humipack’s provides protection for delicate

instruments while preventing any residue from drying. This product is available with

four or seven pockets.

All pouches are designed to assist in achieving standards in line with HTM01-01

guidance and are covered by UK Patent Applied No. 1006807.0.

Roll holders with class and capacity

The standard packaging material used for packing medical

devices sometimes does not meet with the sizes of the

diversity in instruments. For this reason Famos has

designed a roll holder including cutting device to create

the length of packaging material which is required.

To store the rolls of laminate Famos has designed and

developed a number of various stainless steel roll holders.

These are equipped with a cutting device which enables

the user to cut the laminate to the desired length.

The rotary knife of the cutting device is made from the

highest quality hardened steel and is self-sharpening

which ensures years of maintenance free use.

The Famos roll holders are available in various sizes.

Furthermore an extension can be added which doubles the

storage capacity of the holder. All roll holders are available

as a table model, or in a version that can be attached to the

wall or to the back of a work table or packing bench.
