Outsourcing International Assignment Management
• Increase in local package or “light” expatriation package due to employee’s personal request to relocate internationally (+25%)– “Light” expatriation package = Home country pension and international
medical insurance only (no allowances for housing, car or tuition fees) • After time of assignment (3 to 5 years), only 10% of
expatriates are willing to be “localized” when they are on assignment in the United States and less than 5% of our US expatriates are willing to become local employees in their Host country.

Elodie Davignon Manager Relocation & Global Mobility
Saint-Gobain Corporation
• New Generation worries:– Career Management (will they have a position when they will return?)– Spouse employment– Children education– Pension– Medical coverage
• Expatriate Career Management (Repatriation):– 18 months upon return: employees are being contacted to make their
wishes for their career– 12 months: wishes confirmed:– assignment can be extended (5 years maximum, decreasing of the
package until the 8th year – localization at the 9th year)– wish to return to the Home country => Human Resources are then
aware and a new position is search across all our businesses– 6 months before end date: new position identified, return process is
starting
“On Your Mark…Get Set…GO!”
• Multi-cultural work environment:– Trainings for Managers working with International team– Expatriates are eligible for multi-cultural training before or during their
assignment (as well as their family)

• Trends in working through some of these challenges: – Reluctance to move
• Performing pre decision evaluations that are progressive: is the employee a true candidate for the job, a relo, and the host country?
• Introducing online communities of colleagues who have been there done that to begin assimilation before getting there.
• Making destination services a requirement (paid by the company – functioning as a Welcome Wagon of sorts)
– Measuring ROR• Successful relocation and family integration• Bottom line productivity
– Failed assignments• Communication Strategy (internal/external)• Leveraging Social Media
