September Meeting Information By Jerry Coviello

Currently Sheldon N. Slusser and myself received an email about a possibility of a larger meeting venue.

Sheldon and I are waiting to meet the managers of the venue and see if it can handle social distancing.

If this works out depending on cost and availability we might have to change dates in the future and location. After we our meeting with the facility, Sheldon and I will go to the board for approval and vote will be done by the membership. This could be a big move for DVFF and we want to make sure the membership is fully aware of this major move.

We will keep everyone up to date

Meanwhile September 23 meeting will be Online and will be a General meeting to catch everyone up with what is going on and have the election as per the organization by-laws.

Registration will be required for Zoom security

protocol and approval will be given for only members of DVFF.

I am working with Fly Fishers International on how to do online raffles and auctions.

Although not the best of having live meetings, I started to contact speakers that would do their presentations via Zoom.

I know going online can be a challenge for those that are technically challenged, it takes a commitment and desire to LEARN how to use Zoom and other technology. Lets face it most of you all carry smartphones and text each other on places to fish. You go to Facebook on your phone. ZOOM is an apt that you can use on your phone also. I have conducted several meetings and workshops now and have seen many 75 to 80 year old's using ZOOM. If you can not use the video option you can call in.

Let us be safe and smart—Jerry Coviello

Below are the meeting instructions to register for the September 23 8:00 PM Online Zoom Meeting. The

link below is to register for the meeting. Once you register you will receive another link your email, that

link is the Zoom Meeting and is only for you and no one else. You will receive this link when you are ap-

proved. This is to keep Zoom Spammers out of our meeting.

https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAsd-ysrTIrGNZkWFvSUeLMO-Y4cYlBeeZD

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

This is simple and easy to do. Just make sure you download the Zoom Application to your device that

you are using.

4 Flies and Lies

A four week Online

Fly Tying Class was a

big hit with 10 of

our DVFF members

participating in the

class. As many as 50

participates tied

with along with me

and asked question about each fly tying

sequence.

For those that didn’t want to participate or didn’t

have the bandwidth to use Zoom because of their

WIFI configuration, the class was simulcasted on

four Facebook pages. But unfortunately on

Facebook they could not participate in the Q and

A portion of the class.

Each week detailed a new fly with fly tying

instructions and material list which was sent to

each person that registered.

I received photos from participants with the fish

they caught using the flies that they learned.

While learning how to use Zoom as a teaching

platform, I have picked up a few tips and have

improved the way to teach online classes.

An Evaluation was sent to all who attended. I

read each one of them and there were a few

ideas that I will incorporate into the next round of

workshops.

I will be having more online workshops in the

future. I am planning to do a small Beginner Fly

Tying Class soon. BUT only if you email me and

say you are interested, because I am getting a lot

of requests

for doing

more

online

workshops.

More Foam

Flies will be

featured in the upcoming FFI Fly Fishers

Magazine .

September Fly Fishing Outing Port Clinton PA

September 19, 2020 8AM

AS PER PA Regulations on we can meet in an

outdoor setting as long as we go by CDC guidelines.

We must keep 6 feet away and wear a mask in

close proximity of others.

We can meet at Port Clinton PA on the banks of the

Little Schuylkill and Schuylkill Rivers. There is a

pavilion we can borrow as long as it is not reserved.

I will meet at the pavilion at 8AM and just give a

quick shout out to everyone.

After fishing you can visit Cabela’s in Hamburg and

pick up all your sporting needs.

For directions use the address of 944 South St, Port

Clinton PA in your mapping software on your phone.

48 miles from Doylestown and approximately 1 hour

and 17 mins.

On the Schuylkill River you can fish for panfish and

bass, depending on water temperature there are

trout in the Little Schuylkill. Just be mindful of the

temperature that day.

For those looking for something to eat

there is the Port Clinton Hotel

Restaurant with outdoor seating and if

you have a sweet tooth there is the Port

Clinton Peanut Shop. These are located

right on Route 61 in Port Clinton.

I can not guarantee a sunny forecast so

it is all up to you if you want to travel

there and the river is high because of

rain or if it is raining. Use common

sense.

This is also not a “ DVFF EVENT” Just a

bunch of people getting out to enjoy the

outdoors.

From there you can fish the Special Regulation areas

of the Little Schuylkill. It is only a few mins away

from there.

So by 8:15 if no one is at the pavilion, I will leave the

area and go fish.

6 Flies and Lies

Sean Crocker has

donated his time for a

Delaware Valley Fly

Fishers for a once in a

lifetime opportunity.

DVFF will have an

RAFFLE where Sean

will take you on the

water and teach you

the techniques used in

the international world

fly fishing competition. Sean will focus on a strategic approach to the water, rod

choice, Leader make up , flies and various fishing techniques for given

situations.

This is a great way to learn from a member of our National Fly Fishing Team

who loves to compete and share his knowledge of the sport.

This is a perfect opportunity for one person to learn on the stream from Sean

Crocker, member of Fly Fishing Team USA and the captain of Team Freestone

For more information on how to participate in this special AUCTION contact

Dave Wermuth by email at [email protected]. (I'm sure he will

respond quickly) .

Day with Sean will be drawn in February 2021

Survey Results By Jerry Coviello

I would like to thank everyone who participated in

the DVFF Survey. I had 31 respond out of 59

members. That is 53% took the time and told me

what they are willing to do to keep this club

together.

Q1. With the current PA Pandemic Rules of

meetings and gatherings limited to 25 people

indoors, are you willing to have Online Meetings

with online presentations from presenters?

90.32% voted Yes that is clear signal on what

direction to go.

Q2. Would you be willing to participate in an

Online Fly Tying Workshop?

74.19% Voted Yes. I have been offering classes

online and will continue as you can see there is an

interest.

Q3. Would you be willing to participate in an

Online Fly Fishing Workshop?

83.87% Voted Yes. Mostly wanted knot tying and

any kind of getting started.

Q4. Has the DVFF Officers and Board been

communicating to you on what is happening in the

club?

70.97% Voted Yes. Comments were:

This is the first club email I've seen in 2 months. But

I see the info on Facebook.

I am waiting for what will be done. Appreciate the

volunteer work, done for the Club.

haven't really spoken with anyone

Other than e-mails, don't know what's going on.

Seems like the board is discussing ideas with no

outcome. During the fall we should have perhaps 2

meetings, outdoor meetings on a stream where we

fly fish , barbecue and conduct a meeting. We could

invite a speaker to demonstrate on the stream and

someone demonstrate a good fly to tie. All of the

above done on a Saturday or Sunday. Just two

meeting like this during the fall would make me

happy.

Only by the email newsletter

Not at the level that I expect, very short from any

other club I have belonged to. Since the pandemic

info has been very sparse

Q5 Any Comments for the current Officers and

Board Members

Comment:

No. Good job.

Consider conservation efforts. I believe it is part of

the club mission but we are not active. Perhaps a

clean up day once in a while around a local stream?

Lizard creek would be a good candidate as we

fished it during last years picnic. Also, consider

opening the Facebook group to allow comments

and posts for fly fishing and tying discussions.

I look forward to continued membership in an

organization that is focused on something so

important to me.

more programs for members

These were great comments and shows what our

membership is looking for. I hope we can keep an

open communication with our members though

this pandemic and learn how to use technology to

help us keep the organization together.

8 Flies and Lies

A new feature has been created off the Delaware Valley Fly Fishers Facebook Page, it is a Facebook Group Page. You can find in on the DVFF Facebook page in the Group Box.

This was created because of a survey comment that asked for a way so members can communicate, comment and discuss with the group fly fishing, tying and any other topics you feel is important.

The difference between the DVFF Facebook Group Page and the DVFF Facebook Page is, the DVFF Facebook Page is accessible to the world but only comments can be left on the page. Only Admins and Editors can post to the DVFF Facebook Page. The DVFF Facebook Group Page is members only and only the members can post and comment on this page. This becomes an interactive page for our members to use for discussion topics.

This is a PRIVATE GROUP and if you would like to join it you need to click on the Group Page Link in the box and answer the questions and you will be accepted to the page if you are a paid member.

There are currently 3 Posted Topics in the Group Page now. Online Meetings, September Fishing Outing and Online Fly Tying Workshops, more topics will be created as needed.

DVFF Group Page rules:

Be Kind and Courteous

We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but kindness is required.

No Hate Speech or Bullying

Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed, and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.

No Promotions or Spam

Give more than you take to this group. Self-promotion, spam and irrelevant links aren't allowed.

Respect Everyone's Privacy

Being part of this group requires mutual trust. Authentic, expressive discussions make groups great, but may also be sensitive and private. What's shared in the group should stay in the group

This page is moderated so any violations from a member, will cause the member will be removed.

Please enjoy and be responsible

Jerry Coviello

Every month a newsletter is publish to let everyone

know what is going on inside DVFF. If you are

running a program or fishing trip or you just want to

tell everyone what a great time you had fishing on

vacation or you have a killer fly you would like to

share then please submit an article. I

It is easy and fun when you see your article

published in our newsletter for many people to see.

Many outdoor writers started just by submitting

articles in their local club newsletter.

In time you might get a break and end up writing

for a magazine and get paid for your work.

Great way to share your love of fly fishing with

others

9 Flies and Lies

The Fly Fishers International Buz Buszek Fly Tying Award is the most prestigious award in the world of fly tying, and is presented annually to that person who has made significant contributions to the arts of fly tying. Criteria for the Annual FFI Buz Buszek Memorial Fly Tying Award:

• They must be an FFI member. • Can be an amateur or professional. (This is a difficult area. What an amateur does out of sheer love and

enjoyment, a professional must do to make a living. Nevertheless, it is often the professional who, through their skills, offers more to the advancement of the art. Therefore, it will be necessary to make some judgment on intent. Obviously, if the primary intent is to teach and share knowledge, it should merit serious consideration.)

• Areas for judgment are tying skill, creativity or innovation, and sharing knowledge by teaching or publication. • Advancement of the arts need not be on a national scale; it can be at local or regional levels. • Participation in FFI is not a prerequisite, but any such activity as benefits FFI should be highly regarded. • Achievements and contributions should promote the advancement of the arts and qualification should be

superior to other candidates. Past Award Recipients include:

Dave Whitlock George Grant E. H. "Polly" Rosborough Andre Puyans George Harvey Doug Prince Art Flick Bill Blackstone Al and Gretchen Beatty Bob Jacklin Helen Shaw Kessler Chris Helm Gary Borger Henry Hoffman

This year’s, 2020 Fly Fishers International Buz Buszek Memorial Fly Tying Award is awarded to Jerry Coviello Here is a list of a few accomplishments Jerry has done over his 30 plus years as a fly tier and instructor:

When Jerry was asked what does receiving the FFI Buz Buszek Fly Tying Memorial Award mean to him? His response was “Receiving the FFI Buz Buszek Fly Tying Memorial Award is a great honor to bestowed on a fly tier. It does not mean you are the best tier in the world, but you have touched many other fly tiers and non-fly tiers, and hopefully inspired them to want to learn more on how to tie flies. I am honored and blessed to receive such an honor and be included with many other past recipients that received this award.”
