  • What is this? A QR Code is a unique bar code readable

by mobile phones with a camera, smart

phones, or QR code scanners. The code

consists of black modules arranged in

a square pattern on white background.

    Just like the one here.

You might be starting to see these

codes in magazines and on posters, but most of you probably

dont know what they are or what to do with them. These codes arent there

for some unknown, mysterious business usethey are there for you!

First, find out if your phone can scan a QR code: Try doing a web search for

the model of your phone along with QR reader. You can also download an

app from your phones app store.

Then, whenever you see a QR code, use your phone to scan it!

These codes can either display a message on your smart phone screen, or

direct you to a specific web page.

Were just getting started with all the ways that we can use QR codes to benefit our students.

Get all of your student information in one place!

    Visit your Insite Portal page.

    View your class schedule, important

    announcements from the admissions

office, DVC news, and even great

campus photos! Use the feedback link

to let us know what you think and how

we can make it better. Go to

WebAdvisor from the DVC home page

and then click on the Try it now button

in the upper right hand corner of

    the page.

    And coming in Februaryall students

will receive their own DVC email

address! This is how we will commu-

nicate with our students, so watch for

    more information coming soon.

PrerequisitesEnrolling in DVC courses with prerequisites or co-requisitesStudents enrolling in a course with a prereq-uisite must complete that prerequisite with a C grade or better before they are allowed to register. A course has a prerequisite to ensure that a student has the appropriate body of knowledge to be successful. Courses with a co-requisite require that a student either has taken the co-requisite before or is taking it at the same time as the course.

Please note: dropping a class with a co-requisite will result in a drop from both classes.

Usually a prerequisite is a course from a lower sequence of courses. For example, students may not enroll in Math 142 (Elementary Statistics with Probability) without first passing Math 120 (Intermediate Algebra) with a C grade or better, or the equivalent. Usually, a co-requisite course is a lab or a course that provides supplemental instruction. To see which courses have prerequisites and/or co-requisites see the individual course offer-ings in the catalog.

To register for a course with a prerequisiteStudents who have completed the prerequisite course with a C grade or higher, at DVC fall 1999 or later, will have the prerequisite automatically cleared upon registration. If the prerequisite course was completed at DVC, CCC or LMC prior to fall 1999, contact the Admissions and Records Office.

If the prerequisite course was completed at another educational institution, the Admissions and Records Office must clear the require-ment prior to registering either online or by telephone.

All prerequisite forms must have the appropri-ate documentation attached.

Online or telephone registrationThere are a two ways to do this:1. submit an unofficial or official transcript with a prerequisite form to the Admissions and Records Office; OR2. fax an unofficial transcript with a prerequisite form.

If approved, the prerequisite will be cleared within two to three business days. If denied, the student will be notified.

In person registrationStudents may submit an official or unofficial transcript along with a prerequisite form at the time of their registration appointment and register in person.

Student academic responsibilitiesYou are expected to attend classes, do class work on time, and complete each course. You are also expected to maintain regular progress towards an educational goal.

RightsAmong your rights as a student, you may file a complaint on the grounds that DVC failed to make a good faith effort to help you develop an educational plan or provide a specified service.

Waivers, appeals and complaintsStudents requesting waivers or filing appeals or complaints under the Title 5 Matriculation Rights must submit a form to the Admissions and Records Office.

The dean of outreach, enrollment and matricu-lation will consider the appeal or complaint. If the appeal or request for waiver is not granted, the student may appeal to the vice president of student services.

Open course policyIt is the policy of the Contra Costa Commu-nity College District that, unless specifically exempted by statute or regulation, every course, course section or class reported for state aid, wherever offered and maintained by the district, shall be fully open to enrollment and participation by any person who has been admitted to the college and who meets such prerequisites pursuant to regulations contained in Article 1 of Subchapter 1 of Chapter 6 of Division 6 of Title 5 of the California Adminis-trative Code, commencing with section 55200.

Academic honestyDVC students are expected to be truthful and ethical in their academic work. Academic dishonesty is defined as an act of deception in which a student claims credit for the work or effort of another person or uses unauthor-ized materials or fabricated information in any academic work. Academic dishonesty is a violation of the DVC Student Code of Conduct and will not be tolerated.

Student Code of ConductThe Student Code of Conduct is available at www.dvc.edu/code . This code includes important information about students rights and responsibilities on campus. The code contains specific rules and regulations governing student behavior, along with the consequences for violating these rules. If you would like a hard copy of the Student Code of Conduct, visit the Student Life Office in the Student Union Building.

At the San Ramon Valley Center, smoking will be allowed only in the student parking lots. Restrictions at other educational sites will be established by those sites and by state and local law.Adherence to this policy relies on the initiative of nonsmokers to politely request that smok-ers follow the policy and on the courtesy of smokers to follow the policy. Willful or persis-tent smoking in any area where smoking has been prohibited by law or by regulation is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and can be grounds for disciplinary action.

A drug-free DVCIt is DVCs policy to maintain a campus where students are prohibited from the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, pos-session or use of controlled substances as listed in Schedules I through IV of Section 202 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. Puente programwww.dvc.edu/puenteIn collaboration with the University of California, the DVC Puente program is a one-year pre-transfer program open to all students who meet the eligibility criteria. The content of the course focuses on Mexican American/Latino writing, issues and experiences. All students will be required to participate in all course and project activities, counseling and mentoring.

The program is based on three components that work together: English instruction, counseling and mentoring. English 118 helps students with their writing skills, while counselors help with devising career options, developing an academic plan, and identifying long term goals. Men-tors from the business or professional community share their personal, academic and career experience with the students.Since its founding in 1981, Puente has expanded to 54 community colleges throughout the state, including DVC. Studies indicate that community colleges with Puente programs transfer 44 percent more Latino students to the University of California than colleges without Puente.Look for Puente courses in the schedule of classes section.
