Class Ring Ceremony

April 28th marked the first annual Class Ring Ceremony,

TAMIU’s newest tradition. The symbols on the ring capture the

essence and uniqueness of our University, and the ring will remain

unchanged as a tangible connection linking past, present, and

future generations of alumni at home and around the world.

One of the campus’ most

familiar sights that graces our official

ring is the Acequia Fountain. The

fountain is key-shaped, symbolizing

the key to opportunity. During the

ceremony, honorees dipped their

ring into a basin of water from the

Acequia Fountain to further

symbolize their continued

opportunity. About 85 honorees

received their ring, with over 400

guests attending the first of TAMIU’s

new tradition.

Juan Morales, ‘82

Juan graduated from TAMIU in 1982, known as Laredo State University at the time,

with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. Besides his BA, he also has a Master’s and

Doctorate in Psychology, a PhD in International Trade, and a Juris Doctor in Business Law.

After reading TAMIU’s Alumni Newsletter for April Dr. Juan Morales had this to say:

Student Recognition Awards

The Texas A&M University System has awarded $697,500 to outstanding faculty

throughout the system for the fall 2010 presentation of the Student Recognition Award for

Teaching Excellence. The faculty winners represent the top 25 percent of those who partici-pated and received checks for $2,500 each. More than 1,000 faculty member from around the

A&M System participated in the program and over 250 awards were given. Of those 250, 18

TAMIU faculty members were awarded and we would like to take the time to recognize the

recipients. TAMIU’s award recipients were:

“We are most proud of these 18 faculty members who set an enviable standard of instruction

here. Our students are the primary beneficiaries of this expertise and their selection of these

professors as award recipients is inspiring for us all,” - Dr. Arenaz, TAMIU Provost.

Spring Commencement

Time of Commencement

Many hear the word “Graduation” and think of it simply as the completion of a degree

and receipt of a diploma, but here at TAMIU we prefer to call it Commencement. This means

that it is the start of tomorrow as opposed to the end of yesterday, and May marks the month

of Commencement Ceremonies for students of TAMIU.

Commencement will be held May 14 on the TAMIU Green (in front of the Killam Library)

and be at the assigned times for each colleges:

In the Spotlight

RACR: Risk Analysis & Crisis Response 2011 With the recent earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, we are reminded that crises occur

on a daily basis all over the globe and that we should be prepared for such events. TAMIU’s

Binational Center and A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business, along with China’s Society for Risk

Analysis, the European Society for Risk Analysis, the Japanese Society for Risk Analysis and the

Korean Society of Environmental Toxicology, are hosting the 3rd Biennial International

Conference on Risk Analysis and Crisis Response. Following the successful RACR-2007 in

Shanghai and RACR-2009 in Beijing, this conference will meet in Laredo May 22-25 to

provide an international forum for specialists and stakeholders in risk analysis, crisis response,

and disaster prevention.

Celebration of Life TAMIU took time on April 13 to remember students, graduates and faculty/staff who

have passed on before us at the first annual Celebration of Life. The event included a number of

musical selections as well as a roll call of alumni, faculty and staff. The University plans to

present the Celebration of Life every year to remember those who have passed on the

previous year.
