PRESIDENT’S REPORT

On 13 September the Chamber hosted it’s members and Dural Rotary for a networking night at the Dural Country Club.

e feasted on sumptuous platters of fresh seafood and hors d’oeuvres specially selected and prepared by Executive Chef Andrew Cook. Our

thanks to Andrew and to Club Directors, and especially George Truelove and Michael Martin, for providing the excellent facilities of the club for our function and for helping to make the night a success. If you haven’t been to Dural Country Club lately give it a try – you won’t be disappointed.

DuRal COmmunity GOlf ClassiCOn 18th October the 9th Annual Dural Community Golf Classic will be held at Riverside Oaks Resort. This joint initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and Dural Rotary Club has already raised over $125,000 for charity and is just a great day of fun. The standard of golf is mostly ordinary but the level of enjoyment is huge. We are still looking for players and sponsors, so if you’d like to be involved please contact Allan Forno at 0418849318 or me at 9653 9666 or [email protected]. Our thoughts are with well known local identity Tony Hudson, who was hospitalised for surgery late in September. Tony has made a huge contribution to this event since its inception, and as a result the winners of the Dural Community Golf Classic are awarded the Tony Hudson Shield. We wish Tony a speedy recovery and hope he can join us on the day.

yOunG Business minDs awaRDsIn 2014 your Chamber introduced an annual award for the brightest young entrepreneurs in our local schools. October 2016 – Dooral Roundup 5

Whilst travelling through tough times, with a major motorbike accident behind her, a marriage breakup and searching Australia for her daughter, at 39 Gail Page found herself at a major crossroads.

s chance would have it, at a friends recording studio, Gail and a close friend had a jam session. Shortly after

Gail awoke one morning to find a recording contract from Sunball Records on her doorstep. The end result became the CD “Colours that Run”. Nominated for 6 out of 7 awards at the Chain Awards - Gail managed to nail 4 of these awards. The rest isnt history yet, but it sure as hell will be.

After appearing on the first season of The Voice and not making it through to the second round, in 2015 The Voice

asked Gail to audition again - this time she made it through, however through all of the stress of trying to find her daughter - she suffered Bells Palsy whilst going through the auditioning process. Gail decided to continue regardless.

Gail is now discovering and embracing her Aboriginal heritage and has been invited to appear at many

events including the Spirit Festival in Adelaide. Gail has feels a great connection with her audience and said “The thing between my audience and I, is there is no distance. Without them there is no me”. Gail is hoping to start work on a new CD in 2017.

Gail is very much looking forward to appearing at the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival 2016 where you can catch her on Saturday aboard the Paddlewheeler or Sunday at the Blues on the Green (Main Stage). Gail will be accompanied by her close friend Liz Stocco.

The Sydney Blues and Roots Festival, now in it’s 8th year and held in historic Windsor, are excited to announce the lineup for October 27-30, 2016. This year it is a FREE event to all who want to attend, with the exception of the dinner/shows at the Windsor Function Centre or prestigious Blues Cruises on the Hawkesbury Paddlewheer. Venues include the Hawkesbury Hotel, the Bowling Club, Windsor Public School and the Function Centre all located around the McQuade precinct.

Hornsby Shire Council has lodged the development application for the new Storey Park Community Centre.

ornsby Shire Mayor Steve Russell said, “The current centre is tired, ugly and it is well and truly out of date. It

simply does not meet the needs of the community anymore and we are going to replace it with a facility that will serve current and future generations.” The plans include:l A state-of-the-art space catering for all community

needs, with multipurpose rooms that will be ideal for a wide range of events and activities;

l Park facilities with a bike path, plenty of shade and seating, as well as barbecue and picnic areas;

l Onsite parking and fully landscaped surrounds;l An inclusive play environment that will include an

adventure area allowing people of all age groups and abilities to play together.“The multi-use aspect of the design is one of the features

we are most proud of,” Mayor Russell said. “The new centre will cater for small gatherings up to large meetings and can be used by a number of groups at the same time.”

The visit introduces her to Tom, the local cop on the beat, and Nana’s very interesting, friend Vera. As Bridget soon discovers being Nana’s roommate for the Summer is going to be an experience. I was delighted to visit Middle Dural School on 11 September for the school’s 125th Anniversary celebrations.

iddle Dural is not a large school but enjoys a proud tradition and an excellent reputation, very much led

by Principal Ann Mills. I very much enjoyed meeting past and present students, including one delightful lady who attended the school during the 1930s. It was also a wonderful opportunity to meet members of the Middle Dural Fire Brigade. My great thanks to P&C Secretary, Ian McArthur, for including me in the festivities.

It was fantastic to be able to celebrate the achievements of our Local Sporting Campions at an afternoon tea on 19 September. Cameron Girdlestone, the Rio Olympic silver medallist in the men’s quadruple sculls, handed out certificates to the young sportsmen and women who have received a grant towards their attendance at a major sporting competition. Blake Bayldon from Dural was recognised for his achievements in tennis.

One of the most rewarding parts of my new position is to help local residents when they have difficulties with federal government services. I am very pleased that, even in our first few weeks, we have been able to help with immigration queries, human services matters, communications infrastructure and consular cases, among other issues.

If there is anything that I can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Commuter parking has continued to be an issue of growing concern in Baulkham Hills and, while Council and the Baird Government have identified ways to help alleviate the demand for spaces, I am pleased to see the NorthConnex team come on board and offer some solutions for the people of North Rocks as well.

ew carparking spaces will be made available at the Barclay Road carpark for commuters who use the

M2 Hillsbus services to travel to Macquarie Park and the city. The work will see the removal of vegetation to relocate three car spaces, bike bays and bike lockers, the construction of new car spaces, bike bays and bike lockers, including concreting and line marking, new signage in the carpark and the provision of new access points for NorthConnex contractors.

While the construction of NorthConnex has been disruptive, I want to make special note of the contribution to our community of NorthConnex in providing new caprarking spaces and supporting our community in other ways such as sponsorship of local fundraising events.

Not only will NorthConnex bring significant travel benefits to our community, but we are already seeing other benefits to the Hills Shire thanks to responsible corporate citizenship, and NorthConnex’s example is one other businesses would do well to follow.

The NSW Government is cutting pre-school fees by an average of 30 per cent to encourage more parents to enroll their children in early childhood education, in what will be the largest single pre-school fee reduction in NSW history.

tarting from 1 January 2017, community pre-chools across the state who enrol four and five year old

children for at least 600 hours in the year before school will receive increased subsidies from the NSW Government. Funding per child will increase from $4,250 to $6,600. This will enable preschools to reduce fees by an average of 30 per cent per child and services will be contractually required to pass on at least 75 per cent of additional funding to parents in the form of reduced fees. The funding will not only make early childhood education more affordable but will also remove nearly all fees for children from Aboriginal and low-income families at pre-schools. This is apositive step towards increasing access and affordability for four to five year olds in the year before school.

Research shows that children who receive a quality early childhood education in the year before starting school are better prepared to transition to school and benefits carry through to adulthood.

Recently hosted the third annual Small Business Networking evening in co-junction with the Hornsby Chamber of Commerce and Small Biz Matters.

he NSW Government is committed to supporting small business that’s why we have already cut over $1 billion of

red tape for businesses in NSW since September 2011. Small business is the largest employer in the Hornsby Shire and the engine room of our local economy. The networking evening on September 5 at Magpies, Waitara was an opportunity to showcase local business opportunities and build better contacts across the Hornsby Shire. It was also a chance for small business owners to share their concerns and hear how the NSW Government is working to remove red tape and assist small business to operate better and more effectively.

Minister for Small Business John Barilaro told guests about his experiences running a small business before entering politics and said he understood the challenges small

businesses face. “As a business owner myself, I understand the commitment and sacrifice it takes to own and run a business.”

I encourage any businesses in our local area that would like to connect with other local businesses to sign up and become a member of the Hornsby Chamber of Commerce.

Donations totalling $923.90 were also collected throughout the evening to raise money for the Hornsby Kuring-gai Women’s Shelter.

For science, the challenge was to build a bridge from straws and paper clips that could hold weights. Ours held 1.5kg. For the maths round we had to create a farm with the

most profit, with little space. General trivia had 30 questions; we received a score of twenty three. The final round was to figure out three riddles. We all worked together on this and were able to figure out the correct answers for all three. We came seventh out of twenty four teams.

Year 5 teacher, Chris Solomou commended the students “… on their collaborative work, the variety of stalls and creative way the children promoted and sold their products.” The weeks of research and planning in student teams not only brought reality to the theory of commerce but raised an amazing $3623 to go to a cancer charity, in memory of Mr Phipps, the School’s Principal who recently passed away.

It is amazing what you can find under the lino! The son of one of the members of our Historical Society was renovating an old house and when he took up the old Linoleum he found lots of old newspapers in quite good condition. They dated from about May,1955.

n 1955 the “Cold War” was at its hottest and there were was lots of talk about what would happen if an atom bomb was dropped on Sydney. Maps appeared in newspapers

Illustrating how far out you would have to be to not be affected if the worst happened. Dural was just beyond the outer radius.

The headlines in the Sydney Morning Herald for 18th May, 1955 … “Government to build Ammunition Filling Factory at St. Mary’s … Fears that a single factory could be easily pinpointed and wiped out in an atomic attack”. Just at this time a certain young couple with great plans to build a home, decided to buy an old citrus orchard covered with blackberries, for one hundred pounds an acre, at Dural. They too, had noticed the atomic attack warning.

The other big announcement was “State Cabinet (Mr. Cahill was Premier) has decided that the Sydney Opera house will be built on the site of Fort Macquarie tram depot at Benelong Point (sic)” There had been 20 other sites suggested. They decided to have a competition to determine the design. It was to have 2 Halls, one to hold 3,500, the other 1,200

and parking for 200 cars. The public would be invited to subscribe towards the cost. In this article they seemed to be more concerned about shifting the trams than anything else. As it was the last trams ran in Sydney in February 1961.

In this same paper there is a photo of a cage of Cynomolgus monkeys that had been imported for the manufacture of Salk Polio Vaccine.

All this happened before television in Australia, which started in September 1956, in time for the Melbourne Olympics. Just imagine life without TV and mobile phones and computers! The main way of communicating was through radio and newspapers. People wrote letters, which were written with a steel nib pen and ink, or perhaps a fountain pen. The biro had not been invented. The typewriter had been invented back in the 1880’s and was used for all official documents, with the use of carbon copies for keeping records.

Ah! The good old days! Perhaps we need to “look under the lino” occasionally to realise how far we have come in the last 60 years.

The Annual General Meeting of the Dural and District Historical Society will be held at the History Cottage on Saturday, 8th October at 2pm. A “Show and Tell”, when members show some of their treasures, and tell the stories behind these objects, will follow. All welcome.

CELEBRATION

Around 500 people enjoyed Middle Dural Public School’s 125th Birthday party at the school on Sunday September 11.

he Reunion brought together past students and parents from as far back as the 1930’s to wander through the

school’s classrooms and enjoy many memories of times enjoyed at this beautiful small school. The classrooms hosted continuous slide shows of the 125 years and a video presentation of a poem written for the event by bush poet Ben Iggleton. One room was set up as an old style classroom complete with ink and chalk.

Visitors were entertained by demonstrations from the Middle Dural Students, the Hills District Martial Arts Team, the Little Gym at Dural and the Rural Fire Service. Children enjoyed a giant slide, playgroup fun, face painting, a Gamez Trailer, a jumping castle a blow-up obstacle course and the school’s giant chess board.

Apart from the many former parents and children, visitors included all three layers of Government; Hornby Mayor Steve Russell, State Member for Hornsby Matt Kean and

Federal Member for Berowra Julian Leeser. Philip Ruddock the former Member for Berowra who has a long history of contact with the school was also present. Matt Kean spoke during the formal part of the day and commented that the although the school is small in size it more than makes up for it in spirit. “It is a small school with a big heart.” Mr Gary Mangan, Branch Manager, represented the Bendigo Bank, a valued sponsor of the school.

Principal Ann Mills, who has been with the school since 1978, spoke about the wonderful community spirit that has always been with the school. She then hosted a formal cake cutting by the oldest ex-student Mr Dudley Best (started 1934) and the youngest current Kindy student Brayton Cannon.

A special “First 125 Year” Booklet was prepared for the Anniversary and is available through the school on 9651 1761.

Stress is inevitable but it doesn’t need to creep up as frequently as we may allow it to. Jacqueline Alwil, nutritionist, personal trainer founder of The Brown Paper Bag, shares her unique tips on calming down.

ap your social media catch up to just three times per day: Morning, noon and night. Limit social media, and

you’ll limit your stress levels.

Hang out on the floor with your legs up against the wall. It’s an inversion in yoga and the benefits are massive, but most notably for stress reduction as this pose helps to boost circulation back toward the upper body and head, increase energy and relieve lower back pain

where many of us hold stress.

Time block your day, an incredibly simple trick that helps you stick to the time you allocate for individual items in your day and not over do on those that really don’t require that much of our attention.

Do a home detox. It’s as good as any kind of detox because it can completely refresh your head set in regard to your health and life. Eliminating clutter, cleaning out the old and allowing space within the home, office, fridge, pantry, and wardrobe is a wonderful way to flush out the stress. Say ‘No’. We can’t sacrifice our health for the sake of the ‘Yes’ game, instead we need to stay true to our why and only say ‘yes’ to those things we are 100% passionate about.

Barangaroo Reserve, located right on the Sydney Harbour waterfront, offers multiple paths to walk around.

t the waterfront level you will find the Wulugul Walk, which follows the reclaimed shoreline from

the year 1836. There is a walking path taking you right around the headland with many grassed alcoves along the way. On the same level there is a shared use path right beside it. This bitumen path is great for cyclists and joggers. Above the terraced gardens there is another walking path with a higher vantage point giving you great views across the harbour.

This path joins up with the Boot Boot Path and will lead you up to the Walumil and Stargazer Lawn. There are also steps at regular intervals taking you from the foreshore, to the middle terrace and then up to the reserve. At Barangaroo Reserve you can access the harbour, walk right down to the water, and even sit on one of the oversized sandstone blocks.

There are numerous entrances and exits to the Barangaroo Reserve - from Darling Harbour, Hickson Road, Munn Street Reserve, Merriman Street and Towns Place.

The closest train stations are Circular Quay and Wynyard.

No one likes cleaning leaves and sticks out of their pool. Some wise choices for your pool side planting could help make this a thing of the past.

irst you need to work out what the planting is there for. Is it for screening, ambiance or to keep the dust

and dirt out of the pool? In all cases start by looking for plants with the following characteristics: Hardy, Evergreen, Tolerance to Salt, Large leaves or which don’t drop leaves.

For screening your pool look for plants which are quick growing and dense to provide cover with minimal delay. Ideal options are Murraya or Camellia sasanqua varieties.

Many people go for palms to create the tropical feel around their pool but try to go for species which have a clumping form rather than a single trunk. Good options are Golden Cane palms or Raphis. Both are expensive but don’t get too tall and are relatively hardy. Tall single trunk palms like Kentia or Bangalow will need some under planting using things like Aspidistra, Calathea or Bromeliads. Make sure whatever palms you choose that they do not have spikes or thorns. Don’t use Queen palms as the large seeds can cause problems with pool cleaners.

Grass is a good option for a ground cover for large areas when there is plenty of sun. It is best to go for Kikuyu or Couch as they will tend to be a bit hardier in terms of wear and salt tolerance.

Now that spring has finally arrived the thought of outdoor entertaining or simply firing up the barbeque seems appealing.

or those considering building an entertaining

area there are a few considerations to take in account before you start. There is no point building anything without a plan. If your entertaining area requires council approval, you must have one. A draftsman may be able to draw a design fairly quickly but council approval takes around six to eight weeks.

When choosing a design for your outdoor entertaining area, there are some questions that you will need to answer to ensure that it is the right design for you. These may include:• How many people will be using the area? • How big is your outdoor space? • What do you want to include? • What budget do you have to work with? • What design elements are a must have? • What kind of privacy do you require?• How often will you use the area? • What aspect does the area have? (West will require more

shading etc) • What type of atmosphere are you hoping to achieve? • Will the outdoor entertaining area complement the style

of the home?

Nowadays, many people are incorporating outdoor kitchens into the design.

Mulching around trees can help to maintain the moisture and reduces the amount of watering needed, helps to control weeds and keep the soil cooler in the summer.

t helps in preventing soil erosion, and also prevents light from reaching the surface of the soil, working as

an efficient remedy against weed growth. As the mulch decays, it enriches the soil by adding nutrients to it and acts as a good fertilizer. It helps the soil to retain the moisture preventing evaporation. Mulch is also very commonly used to beautify an area.

There are two types of mulch: organic and inorganic. Organic mulch is prepared using natural substances, like leaves, grass, vegetables etc. It contains natural substances, and therefore decomposes easily. Inorganic mulch is a mixture of both natural and artificial substances and it does not readily decompose. Mulching is beneficial throughout the year; however in winter provide the trees with an extra one inch thickness of mulch.

For advice on mulching or other landscaping queries please contact me at Langland’s Landscape Supplies.
