She says that while her daughter has encountered many obstacles, she still makes time to have a holiday open house. “She puts up 12 trees in her house and they have an open house for everybody who wants to come,” Bowman said. She said having the open house led to many people telling her daughter that she should start writing. “Everybody says she should write a book and she did,” Bowman said. Zehr-Patterson penned “Climbing the Mountains,” which outlines the struggles and obstacles her family has faced during recent years. “It’s about the struggles we’ve had to face over the last 20 years, ” she said. It all started in 1990, when her father was in a gas explosion at the family print shop. Severely burned, he made his way out of the building. “I was the only one to see him from our family,” she recalls. “He couldn’t live and he couldn’t die for six months.” She says that around that time period, she started to become depressed and has battled it ever since. The next struggle Zehr-Patterson had to deal with involved her adopted son, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in kinder- garten. After being told that she had a “one percent chance of ever having a baby,” she and her husband adopted another child, a daughter who happened to be later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, anxiety and obses- sive-compulsive disorder. Then, defeating the odds and the predictions of the doctors, Zehr-Patterson had a daughter. Today , her son is 14 years old and her daughters are 10 and eight years old. But the battles weren’t over, yet. “Through all of this, I became very, very sick,” she said. “I was having major thyroid issues.” She ended up at Mayo Clinic and describes the situation as “a long ordeal.” Experiencing blurry vision, Zehr-Patterson thought she was getting older and that it was probably time for her to get bifocals, she said. But instead, she was diagnosed with a rare eye disease and today, she is progressively losing her vision. “I go to the specialist every five weeks. I get injections into my eyes, ” she said. The injec- tions help slow down the vision loss. She lost By KELLY MCLENDON [email protected] Leo, Cedarville schools earn ‘Four Star’ distinction from state Ton y Bennett, superintendent of public instruction, recently announced Indiana’s Four Star School awardees for the 2010-11 school year. “The Four Star School Award, the state’s highest distinction, was given to 162 schools out of 1,780 public schools…for their attendance rates, student achievement and performance on the I- STEP+, ” a press statement said. ‘Every client is a celebrity’ at new salon on Lima Road For local hairstylist Shawana Cole, helping her clients focus on healthy hair is important. As the owner of Hair by Shawana, located on Lima Road, Cole special- izes in helping the average woman achieve stylish results. “My goal is to help the everyday woman achieve the latest trends and styles, without compro- mising the integrity of the hair, or having to spend a fortune,” she said. As a hairstylist for six years, she has trained in high-profile salons. “I trained in two well- recognized salons in downtown Chicago, including Ajes The Salon, which is owned by celebrity hairstylist A.J. Johnson,” she said. Johnson has worked with celebrities like Tyra Banks, Jennifer Hudson and Heather Headley. His work has been featured in magazines like Lucky, French Elle, Essence, Ebony and Jet and many others. Small changescan make a big difference

Small changes in yourdiet can increase yourenergy levels, improveyour hand-eye coordina-

tion, help with weight lossand even improve thevibrancy of your skin. Thefollowing are commonnutritional mistakes thatare easily fixed with alittle planning. Learn howa few changes canimprove your overall well-being.

Skipping BreakfastAvoid skipping meals

and especially breakfast. The best way to keep yourmetabolism high is to eatconsistent meals. Yourbody needs to fuel upbefore activities.

Remember to eat for thefuture, not for the past. When the body hasconsistent meals, it avoidsgoing into starvationmode. Even though mostof us have plenty of foodavailable, the body readsinconsistency of mealtiming as a means to kick into survival mode.

Instead of using storedbody fat, it will hold on toit. The metabolism slowsto conserve energy andmuscle is often used forfuel.

Skipping breakfast not

only slows your metabo-lism making it harder tolose body fat, but it alsodecreases your hand-eyecoordination.

To feel your best, starteating breakfast and make

better choices throughoutthe day. Also, stop eating2-3 hours before bedtimeso you are sure to wake uphungry.

If eating before bed is anecessity, choose light, easily digestible foods.

Replacing meals withenergy bars or drinks

Although energy bars ordrinks can be convenient, they are still processedfoods that aren’t providingyou with proper nutrition.

Even though some barsare better than others, thedried fruits and granolas

are really high in sugar. They often contain

fortified nutrients, meaning that the items arenot naturally containingcertain nutrients, but theyare added to boast healthbenefits. There is just nosubstitute for nutrientscoming from real foodslike vegetables, fruits, proteins and complexcarbohydrates.

Reach for real foodwhen possible and try notto use energy bars or mealreplacement shakes as a

staple in your diet.

Choose food closest to itsnatural state for the mostnutritional value.

Trusting nutrientclaims

Be aware of how muchyou buy because of anutrient claim on apackage that boasts health. Most items claimingsomething aren’t really

that healthy.Common nutrient

claims include: “fat free,”“0 grams trans-fat,” “nohigh fructose corn syrup,”or “made with wholegrains.”

While these claims arethings we do need to beaware of, most are stillmade with ingredients thatoffer little to no nutritionalvalue.

Look at ingredient liststo determine what nutri-tion the food really has to

offer. Just because a brand of cookies claim to only have100 calories and no trans-fat doesn’t mean it’s healthy. It’s still a cookie that is made with white flour and sugar.

It’s best to avoid as many packaged foods as possible,no matter what they claim. Add more vegetables intoyour diet and reap the benefits of whole foods nutrition.

Not drinking enough waterNot drinking enough water can lead to dehydration and

every system in your body relies on water to function.Water helps flush out toxins in vital organs and helpscarry nutrients to cells.

According to the Mayo Clinic, even mild dehydrationcan drain your energy and make you tired. Although eachindividual requires a different amount of water accordingto several factors, the easiest way to start is to drink eight8 ounce glasses of water daily.

This means plain water, not flavored waters. Eliminatepop (diet or not) and sugary energy drinks and limitcoffee intake to increase consumption of water.

Getting enough water also helps with digestion, weightloss, headaches and much more. Try using a reusablebottle that you can take with you anywhere.
