“Treat those who are good
with goodness, and also
treat those who are not
good with goodness” Lao
Tzu
At Dunrankin, we believe
in creating a positive climate
for learning. This month our
Character Education focus
was “Honesty”. Every day
during the morning
assembly, I shared my
thoughts on how my students
can demonstrate honesty in
their everyday life. I am
confident that now they
clearly understand what
honesty means to them.
Please continue to talk to
them about our Character
Education Traits. In
February, our focus is
“Co-operation”
Numeracy Day was a big
success. The turnout was
amazing! It was wonderful to
see so many families coming
out to learn and have fun with
their children and the
teachers. Our morning session
was a great opportunity for
parents to visit classrooms and
participate in the math
activities with their children.
The evening session was full of
excitement as parents and
children participated in the
wonderful Numeracy Centers
set up by the teachers. Thanks
to all the staff who volunteered
their time to run the centers.
As you know Dunrankin Drive
P.S. is a busy place with lots of
exciting activities happening
on a daily basis. We have
many exciting events planned
for the rest of the year. We will
keep you informed of all these
events.
Black History Month
February is recognized as the
official month for Black Histo-
ry. During this month stu-
dents, staff and parents in Peel
will be participating in a num-
ber of activities that promote
the understanding of the many
contributions made by Black
Canadians.
Next week, our Grade 5 stu-
dents will be visiting the Black
Inventor’s Museum Exhibit at
Lincoln M. Alexander S.S.
Please watch for updates on
other activities that students at
Dunrankin will be involved in.
Tips for ensuring your
child’s safe arrival to and
from school
Call the school if your child
will be absent for that day.
Make sure the school has a list
of people your child can be
released to. This also applies to
day camp, swimming lessons,
and other activities.
Pre-arrange a contact person
your child knows who can pick
him or her up in the event of
an emergency.
Help your child set up a buddy
system if he or she walks to
school. Children should walk
in groups of at least two.
Avoid placing your child’s
name in a clearly visible loca-
tion on their clothes, lunch box
and other belongings because
it advertises who they are. A
stranger may read their name
and call out to them, fooling
your child into believing this
person knows them.
Alert your child about talking
to strangers in the community.
Your Child’s Safety is Always Our #1 Concern !

th, and your pictures will be featured outside the

Volunteers?
If any parents, or older siblings are looking for a volunteer placement, I could really use some help in the library right now. If you are madly, pas-sionately into organizing a lot of books, please let me know.
Forest of Reading
Forest of Reading Books (Blue Spruce and Silver Birch) are now in the library. The Silver Birch reading club begins meeting this Monday, and will meet weekly until May. Teachers in grades K-3 will be sharing Blue Spruce Stories with their classes. In April our students will be joining the nation-wide vote to pick category winners. If you are interested in participating in the Forest of Reading Program (and you are not in the club, or are not even a student anymore) don't despair. You can get involved through the public library, as well. And if you can't do that, you can find all the past year's Forest of Reading titles on their own bookcase in our school library.
February Displays
This Month we will have book displays for Black History Month, Family Day, Valentine`s Day, and Freedom to Read Week. Do come in and look.
“The library is the temple of learning, and
than all the wars in history.”
Library Hours

One of the best websites for free children's literature online is the ICDL.
http://en.childrenslibrary.org/
This site offers a good collection of chil-dren's books, and is easy to search by age group or topic. Best of all, it also has stories in more than 20 languages; including Urdu, Gujurati, Tamil, Punjabi, Arabic and Hindi.
Math Literacy Books
Thank you to all the parents who visited the library on our Numeracy and Literacy Night. All parents are reminded that if there was a math-related book on display that you would like to take home, to share with your child, you would be welcome to come in and sign it out. We hope to see you in the library soon.
Book Fair Booked
The next Book Fair has been organized and will run April 13 to April 17

Everyone is a math teacher, parents included
Parents and other adults in our students' lives are important partners in children's mathematics edu-cation. By engaging your children in thinking and talking about mathematics, you help support their numeracy success. To help you with this, one great resource is the Ministry of Education's Doing Mathemathics With Your Child. You can find this guide for parents of children in kindergarten to grade online at www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/literacynumeracy/parentGuideNumEn.pdf. Traffic safety in our community
Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school.
Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.
Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school.
Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.
When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe.
Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.
Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.
During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.
Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect.
Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.
Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street.
Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.
