A basic overview of CFV (cardfight!! Vanguard) and why I let it take over

my life(yes yes I’m not biased. Nope.)

• Well but before moving on I would like to address that cfv isn’t yugioh even though it’s about cardgames ok? And don’t hate on it just because it’s an anime about cardgame (seriously so many “anime fans” have made fun of me for liking cfv because of its supposed relation to ygo it’s not even funny anymore)

• If you want to derive full enjoyment from this series, you need to be at least 20% open-minded. Yes yes I know a lot of people would puke on the aspect of watching any “merchandising anime” but that don’t mean they can’t be enjoyable. (in fact, that’s their entire purpose!!)

Pros and consPros:-A great cast of characters-Non-invincible, non-archetypical shounen protagonist-Everyone actually knows how to play their damn cardgames without

bullshitting out new rules-Badass female characters who don’t take shit from people and manage to

earn respect with their skills (without submerging into the extremes of the “tsundere” trope thanks jeebus)

-BADASS FEMALE CHARACTERS WHO AREN’T BLATANT LOVE INTERESTS TO THE MAIN MALE LEADS/FEMALE LOVE INTERESTS WHO REFUSES TO TAKE SHITS FROM HER MAN AND WILL WHIP HIS ASS IN LINE IF NEEDED TO/WHO ALL MANAGED NOT TO BE “TOMBOYS” AND STILL KICK ASSES.

-hot antagonists (very valid reason to start watching this show right away why are you still reading this)

- A surprisingly emotional coming-of-age story (w/cardgames and yes it’s glorious)

Cons:-As awesome as the character developments are, the plot itself seems

to suffer from the end of s1 onwards and some plotholes are never properly explained (I’m not gonna go in-depth into this because I don’t want to spoil anything for people who read this but have never seen cfv before)

-That doesn’t mean that it’s a clusterfuck. It’s still quite enjoyable, as long as you don’t over-analyze everything (like I do, and I still find cfv pretty fun to watch)

-idk for me good characters override plot but to others it may be the opposite. I never claim that I would be totally objective.

-Awkward animation, particularly in early s1-some people may be turned off by the artsyle because it’s too ygo??

(idk but people seem to treat this as a totes valid reason so I’m gonna put it here)

Characters (aka the main nerds)

First nerd-aichisendou

- I hold every blue haired protag dear to my heart and let them destroy my life.-This picture makes him 100x times more intimidating than he actually is-my sweet son who may or may not be older than me-his character development makes me so happy and proud as a shounen anime watcher because it’s quite unconventional while managing to be relatable at the same time

Why I love this kid (yes I spend an entire slide talking about this I’m not

biased)- Is humble, sweet, while being non-submissive and actually has the

strength/drive to stand up for himself and his beliefs.- Well the last part takes a long time to emerge but it’s worth the

wait- Has the voice of a baby bird (Tsubasa yonaga’s voice warms my cold

heart)- His inferiority complex and his emotional over-dependency on one

certain person is actually handled skillfully and not portrayed as heavily angst-tastic and whiny

- A moe shounen protag who is CAPABLE OF MAKING BAD DECISIONS WITH NEAR DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES and other characters don’t handwave his shit

- I lo oovee aichi sendou a lot ok- I actually has 100+ more reasons why I like this blue haired angel

but I have wasted enough of your time so let’s move on

NERD NO. 2- KAI TOSHIKI- The “Rival”

-This fandom’s sex god apparently. But I mean why not look at his face-goddamnI will be more thorough on the next slide but right now just let me bask in this beauty

• He’s my other son. The son that I never talk about much because he’s so goddamn embarrassing but I still adore him.

• Too brunet to be an anime protag. Also what the fuck is that hair.• His selective muteness/social avoidant behaviors is not actually treated as

“coolness” or “sugoii” in context and THESE TRAITS CAUSES BAD THINGS TO HAPPEN TO THE PEOPLE CLOSE TO HIM/TO HIMSELF BECAUSE OF MISCOMMUNICATIONS. Realism in character interactions??In my cardgame animu??? No wayyyy

• HE ACTIVELY ACKNOWLEDGES THESE BAD TRAITS AND TRY TO IMPROVE HIS COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN THE LATER SEASONS. SO THAT NO ONE CLOSE TO HIM GETS HURT AGAIN.

• Subtly tsundere/kuudere/deredere/kaidere what is a kai toshiki• Very dramatic toward card games and actually believes in the hearts of the

cards• THE• Is actually a confused weenie beneath his stone cold facade who isn’t

quite sure what to do with his life. And it shows.• Hail kai toshikiAlso he and aichi are kinda maybe not totally possibly in love with each other in a very non-homo way

Nerd no.3- Misaki Tokura

MY QUEENHELLO WE HAVE A BADASS TAKING CHARGES HERE. Move out of the way you peasants.

• Hey you have to at least give bushiroad some credits. They know how to write their anime female characters without submerging them in the ugly facets of fetishization or plot incompetency.

• No one dares to talk shit to this woman because they all acknowledges her strength. Everyone RESPECTS her.

• Only just recently started playing cardgames but is a boss at what she does.

• WINNING AGAINST THE PROTAGONIST ON HER FIRST GAME AND MANY OTHERS. WITHOUT SOME PLOT BULLSHIT JUSTIFYING HER WINS.

• Her deck is gorgeous and the way she fights is so smart and graceful and I’m not even fangirling. This is a fact.

• Hardy and assertive, but not emotionally inept and is a very kind person. • Is actually very emotionally understanding despite having white hair• Has a sad backstory, gets sad and moves on with her life instead of

angsting/whining about it for 10+ episodes.• Not a love interest to main male leads.• NOT A LOVE INTEREST TO MAIN MALE LEADS.• Seriously who can hate misaki tokura???

Nerd no. 4- Kamui Katsuragi

Can do the trick with the cards using only two fingers what tefuck

• Is not actually a brat despite his appearance.• Young, wild, and kicks a ton of asses.• Gives a middle finger to ageism, but still respects his

senpais and elders. You respect him, he will respect you.• Does not endure any bullshits from others and will call

them out for it. And his calls are usually quite reasonable and just.

• Treats aichi like a big brother (seriously if this isn’t cute I don’t know what is)

• Is actually very considerate toward others and isn’t a condescending douche like 10225 other hot-blooded shonen heroes under the age of 15.

• Has the skills to back up his overconfidence.• A surprisingly realistic kid.

One of the few reasonable tsunderes I have had a chance to witness

Beautiful redhead who’s disappointed because he’s too spoiler for me to go in-depth into his character

An amazing parent

Animal in cardgame anime that actually acts like one

• Uh yeah so I guess in the end it’s your choice to decide if you should watch this anime or not because I’m not you and I don’t have mind control ability (regrettably)

• But I just want you to give this anime a chance before dissing this as just another dumb merchandising anime unworthy of attention ok???
