DURHAM UNIVERSITYELECTRIC MOTORSPORTS SPONSORSHI PBOOKLET2014- 2015 DUEM SPORTSUNI VERSI TY OFTHEYEAR2015 I NTRODUCTI ON Durham University Electric Motorsport (DUEM) is a team of students who design, build and race cutting edge electric cars. DUEM are currently building their most ambitioussolarpoweredcaryetforentryintothe2015WorldSolarChallenge. Thiscarfeaturesahighlyaerodynamicallyandstructurallyoptimised monocoquechassis,thesecondgenerationofthein-wheelmotordesignedby the team and 392 silicon solar cells with an efficiency of 22.8%. The team consists of over 40 undergraduate and postgraduate students studying abroadrangeofdegreesincludingengineering,physics,mathematics,biology, businessandeconomics.DUEMprojectsareentirelyextra-curricular,andthe leadership and direction of the team is the responsibility of the students.Whilst wereceivetechnicalassistance fromtheSchoolofEngineeringand Computing Sciences and theBusiness School, we arerequired to raise a significant portion of our budget with external support so our sponsors are very important to us! Our aim this year is to complete the manufacture of our first brand new solar car since DUSC01 back in 2004. Our aim is to finish in the top ten in the 2015 World SolarChallenge.Wewanttopromoterenewableenergytechnologiesand showcase British science and technology at home and on the international stage. Wehaveaproventrackrecordofremainingcompetitiveagainstbig-budget teamswhilstonlyhavingafractionoftheresources.Inthepastwehavemade our own motor controller and have even encapsulated our own solar cells. In the process the team has developed technical expertise and knowledge, with several previousteammembersnowemployedbycompaniessuchasMcLaren,Rolls-Royce and Force India. Our long-term vision is to become the world wide number one solar car team, but alsotoofferdevelopmentsuniquetoourcar.Forexample,ourteamhas developedanin-wheelelectricmotorandexcellentaerodynamicanalysisand development capabilities. ABOUTDUEM OURVI SION SOLARCAR DUEMwillentertheWorldSolarChallenge(WSC)in October 2015 with a brand new Solar Car. The World Solar Challengeisanarduous3000kmenduranceeventheld bienniallyinAustralia.Solarcarteamsfromacrossthe globeraceagainsteachothertobethefirstcartocoverthedistancefrom DarwintoAdelaide.DUEMwillbeupagainstteamsfromsomeofthebest universitiesintheworld,mostofwhichhaveamultimillion-dollarbudget. Long distance solar car events are a unique challenge and require a car that is highly efficient, extremely reliable and able to cruise as fast as the speed limit allows.Thiswillbeourfirstcompletelynewsolarcarsinceouroriginalcar constructedin2004. The caris currentlyunderconstruction,and will feature the following main components: A monocoque chassis featuring an asymmetric car layout and structural features 392 silicon solar cells of over 22.8% efficiency covering the top surface of the car An in-wheel motor developed by the team Lithium Ferrite batteries to store solar energy4. 5METRESLONG 1. 75METRESWI DE 392SI LI CON SOLARCELLS OURPROJECTS Drivingthecaristhesecond-generationin-wheelmotor, designedbytheteam.Thenewversionhasasmaller diameter(whichallowsustouselowrollingresistance tyres), improved electrical performance and better cooling. The aerodynamic shape of the car is essential to our success. Aerodynamic drag hasbeenminimisedbyutilisingstateoftheartcomputationalfluiddynamics software available in the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. Since the car will spend a large proportion of the race cruising at relatively constant speeds, overcomingtheaerodynamicdragisthe largestexpenditureofenergy.Giventhe relatively small amount of energy available topowerthecarfromthesun(aboutthe sameasakettle!),minimisingdragand maximising efficiency is essential. MAXMOTOR POWER: 5KW FORMULASTUDENT DurhamUniversityFormulaStudentwasformedinlate2010byagroupof students from the universitys engineering society as an extra-curricular project. The teamsoongrewinsizeasmoreandmorestudentscametobepartofthis famouscompetition,withtheuniversitysprestigiousCentreforAutomotive Research becoming a key academic partner for the team.Sincethentheteamhasgonefromstrengthtostrength,enteringthedesign competitioninJuly2012,2013and2014.Initsfirstyearatthecompetitionthe team finished in 5th place out of the UK teams (7th overall), meaning they were thehighestplacednewteamandalsothehighest placedteamthatdidnotalsohaveateaminthe Class 1 competition.
