Introduction by Lord Mayor Christy Burke

As Dublin’s Lord Mayor I am delighted to contribute an introduction to Dublin City Council’s Social Inclusion Week Events Programme for 2015.I sincerely believe that social inclusion is something that involves all of us. Many of us are fortunate in that we are able to live lives that allow us to develop our talents, realise or potential and have our voices heard.

Imagine though if you couldn’t do these things. What would it be like to be excluded because of a disability, the colour of your skin, sexual orientation or economic status? Unfortunately this is a reality that continues to affect many people in our city. All of us have a role to play in removing these barriers and creating a city which is inclusive and allows everybody the possibility of realising their potential. As an organisation, Dublin City Council cannot on its own create a city that is socially inclusive. However the council can provide civic leadership on the issue and help make the city a better place for people to live in, work in and visit for everyone. Social Inclusion Week is an excellent initiative which does much to further this goal. This year’s programme includes many events that I would encourage people to engage with. The ‘Here I Am’ exhibition has already achieved so much in raising awareness about Down Syndrome and is sure to be a highlight of Social Inclusion Week when it goes on display in Wolfe Tone Square. There are also many other events taking place which will highlight issues affecting migrants, people with disabilities, the homeless and many other groups.I would ask everybody to reflect on how we can all work to make our city more inclusive

DESCRIPTION: THE SYMBOLISM BEHIND THE POSTER

The Poster consists of a head made from representations of different disabilities. The red side of the face has no ear, to represent deafness, whilst the blue side is missing an

eye, which is blindness. Its mouth is wearing two different expressions on both sides of the face, on one face is

a smile, the other a frown. The contradicting nature of the mouth is there to reflect the shifting emotions of

Bipolar Disorder, an illness that causes dramatic shifts in mental health. The top part of its cranium is divided into two parts, each representing a different

condition. The left side consists of a serious of X characters surrounding a 47, referring to the extra chromosome found in people diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The right side is made up of different coloured puzzle pieces, a common symbol for Autism and Aspergers, which is a disorder that impairs social development. Behind

the head are three objects. The first two are self-explanatory, a crutch and the wheel belonging to a wheelchair.

The third one is a purple repeat symbol with the word ROUTINE in the centre of it, which symbolizes the obsession with routine that characterises OCD (Obsessive

Compulsive Disorder).

Dublin City Age Friendly Programme

The Dublin City Age Friendly Strategy 2014-2019 was officially launched in September 2014. A City Wide Age Friendly Alliance, chaired by the Lord Mayor, along with five Local Area Age Friendly Alliances, have been working since then on the implementation of the recommendations of the strategy, and on the establishment of Area Older Person’s Councils to ensure that consultation with Older People remains at the centre of the programme. Just some of the practical initiatives which have already taken place, or are underway, are the development of a Dublin City Libraries Age Friendly Library Strategy, a pilot Age

Friendly Park at Albert College Park, an age-proofing of Dublin City Council’s customer telephone system by Older People and the expansion of some of the most successful community initiatives such

as Men’s Sheds and Dementia Choirs.
