TRANSITIONING TOWARDS URBAN RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Framework for Ecodesign in the urban ecosystem (1)

Participatory processes of all urban stakeholders (including citizens) for building consensus around necessary actions to fulfil urban needs

Tapping into the many scales that exist in the “social space ” of an urban environment for mainstreaming Ecodesign product and services

Creating the right market conditions, with the right partnerships to increase chances of success for innovative products

=> Urban eco-system backed by a variety of actors to create “shared value”

Three building blocks

TRANSITIONING TOWARDS URBAN RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Framework for Ecodesign in the urban ecosystem (2)

provide opportunity for the public to participate in the debate (e.g. social networks, marketing, …)

provide core infrastructure

provide fiscal, legislative or accredited ‘ranking’ to motivate behaviour change (taxation, grants, …)

demonstrate public commitment through leading by example or building consistency across its own actions and communication

DEFRA 4E model

TRANSITIONING TOWARDS URBAN RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Recommendations 1 :Social impact bonds Fostering result-driven innovation by incentivizing Ecodesign innovators to

come up with ideas to cope with a defined urban challenge. E.g. launching of a “Pampers Impact Bond” with the objectives to decrease

the amount of nappies in households waste by 50%.

Recommendations 2 :C2C Material bank Centre C2C material bank (sector specific)

Give advises on the use of material and available solutions Organise collective purchase of alternative and ecological materials Provide knowledge-based recommendations at regional level

TRANSITIONING TOWARDS URBAN RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Recommendations 3 :Brussels Smart Network Challenge/results driven network grounded on urban challenges for

resilience and bringing together different types of stakeholders E.g. how can we limit the food chain in Brussels to three steps between the

producer and the consumer?

Product Service Systems Definition

Innovation strategy, shifting the business focus from designing (and selling) physical products only, to designing (and selling) a system of products and services which are jointly capable of fulfilling specific client demands (Manzini, 2003)

Objectives Generate new ideas of PSS applications Propose innovative instruments for local authorities to support

Product Service System development

Pilot project – I-Agri Physical incubator (30

hectares of high productive lands) specialized in agro food sector businesses

Goal : Use lands for eco-

business instead of construction

Promote short circuit economy development

Green Business Next steps

Sign of the Agreement between the stakeholders of the area Start of the pilot project Present the project at the Eataly Store and discuss eventual

collaboration around distribution of products coming from I-Agri Build a replicable model for other regions to build economic

resilience through the use of lands for local agriculture

Rating System Goals for the rating system

Easy to use by suppliers and customers Inclusive – no company too small Recognises and rates multiple aspects of sustainability Rooted in local development needs and priorities Built with stakeholder involvement and feedback Can be plugged into online market / procurement tools

Next steps Integrate the local challenge in the rating system Test and refine the rating system

Interactive market online Objective

Development of a neighbourhood marketplace web platform.

Transfer of Seville’s budget to the remaining WP6 partners

UEL (3P-M): content of platform (rating system), follow-up first test + Brussels and Rome, refine the platform, report on results

LBBD, BICLAZIO, BRUSSELS EN. (3P-M each): integrate the rating system to an existing local market online (IT dep.?)
