DUBBO CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

History Dubbo Christian School was established in 1983 as a co-educational school offering Bible-based, Christ centred schooling in the progressive regional city of Dubbo situated on the Central West Slopes and Plains of New South Wales, Australia.

We started in 1983 in borrowed premises, with a number of committed families, students and staff and a Board of Directors overseeing the commencement and operation of the school. During our first four years, land was purchased, a building program commenced, and we moved to our Sheraton Road site in November 1986.

The school you see today is a far cry from our humble beginnings in 1983 when our school commenced with a population of just 44 (K-6) students and two staff members. Our first Year 12 cohort graduated in 1989.

The school population is now almost 600 students (Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12) along with more than 80 dedicated members of staff. Dubbo Christian Preschool operates programs for 3-year-olds (Pebbles) and 4-year-olds (Prep). We also now manage Wellington Christian School, a K-6 school situated 30 minutes along the Mitchell Highway towards Sydney.

Over the years DCS has developed a well-established mix of tradition, heritage and sustainability and is held in high regard in the Dubbo and wider community.

‘Dubbo Christian School was highly recommended by both

family and friends and is a big reason for us choosing to stay in

Dubbo long term…’

Our Educational Philosophy Dubbo Christian School implements a distinctively Christian educational program. The school is committed to Bible-based and Christ-centred curriculum based on a transforming vision. This vision has four aims:

• Responsive discipleship

• Centring all things on Jesus Christ

• Crafting high quality teaching for effective learning

• Seeking to build God’s kingdom

All learning is informed by these aims and our Christian worldview is woven through all teaching and learning, implemented through The Transformation by Design framework. This framework seeks to ensure that a Biblical worldview is the foremost shaper and driver of the curriculum while incorporating current best practice in program development and teaching.

Our foundational belief is that all have been given the invitation to become followers of Jesus and to join with Him in becoming transforming agents of His kingdom. The broad themes and messages of the Bible, which describe our rebellion against God and His solution, in Jesus, to restore our relationship with the creator of the world, explain why Christian education is transformational - from its basis in the cross, to the shaping of teaching and learning, through its impact on curriculum, and then to the impact on the lives of students.

Purpose, Aims & Objectives Our aim is to help each child achieve Christian maturity and to partner with parents as we work together in the task of schooling. Dubbo Christian School students are nurtured academically, emotionally, physically and spiritually through a wide range of learning experiences in an atmosphere of love and care. Each child is seen as unique, made in God’s image. Dubbo Christian School has a caring culture of high expectations in the context of genuine nurture of each student in order to develop discerning, well-equipped young people ready to confidently take their place in the world.

Academic Dubbo Christian School is an academic day school which offers a curriculum based on the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) Syllabus. These standards are accepted as a minimum requirement for our school.

Our school provides an academic program that has an integrated Christian perspective supported by a wide range of sporting, cultural and leadership opportunities. Studies lead to the award of ROSA (Year 10) and the NSW Higher School Certificate (Year 12).

Our Director of Learning Enhancement supports our teachers to be the best they can be and ensure learning is maximised across our school.

We also employ Learning Support personnel to facilitate any special learning needs of our students and an on-site After-School Study Centre is available after school three afternoons per week, offering free tutoring to interested students in Years 7 to 12.

Pastoral Care A structured Pastoral Care program meets the pastoral needs of students from Preschool to Year 12. We employ a School Psychologist, an Aboriginal Liaison Officer and students also enjoy the services of a School Chaplain.

‘We love the quality of education and student care. Our son has benefitted greatly since being at the school and

we want our daughter to experience the same.’

Our Community Dubbo Christian School is affiliated with Christian Education National (CEN), an Australia-wide network of independent Christian schools which began in 1962. There are over 80 similar schools around Australia.

We are a non-denominational Christian school with an open enrolment policy. Applications for enrolment are processed and assessed on an individual basis.

Parents are encouraged to become involved in the life of our school and it is a delight to see parents helping in classrooms, running events, accompanying excursions and sharing their skills, abilities and knowledge with our students.

Facilities Our facilities are tailored to support learning and community across the school and continued effort is applied towards developing these resources. We have an 800 seat Auditorium as well as a Gymnasium, specially designed Preschool rooms, General Learning Areas and specialty Visual Arts, Food Technology and Music Rooms and Computer Labs. Our new Science block was opened in 2018, and a state-of-the-art TAS Building is being constructed in 2019.

Students also enjoy an Agriculture plot, a large oval and beautifully landscaped grounds.

Fees Our mission as a Christian school is to assist parents in the nurture of their children. Dubbo Christian School packages as many education services as possible into one all-inclusive tuition price per student.

Stationery, compulsory excursions, sporting activities and competitions are all incorporated into the fees. Prompt payment discounts and generous sibling discounts are offered as a part of our commitment to families.

The Fee Schedule is available in this Prospectus.

Discipline Relationships are vital at Dubbo Christian School and all discipline has its foundation in positive and strong relationships. Policies for managing student behaviour and associated restorative practices assist students to learn from mistakes and to reconcile differences and problems.

The purpose of discipline is to help students learn respect, self-control and obedience in order to create a safe environment where learning can be maximised.

At Dubbo Christian School we acknowledge the close relationship between student well-being, pastoral care, classroom climate and good teaching practice. The close relationship between school and parents is also critical. Discipline therefore needs to be seen and developed within this holistic perspective.

Students are guided into positive ways to behave through the Student Code of Conduct, based on the phrase The DCS WAY

• Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

• Classroom behaviour that respects the right to learn

• Stewardship that looks after our school and our things

• Wisdom based on forgiveness, truth and honouring the Bible

• Actions that are courteous and loyal to others

• Your own decisions to wear the uniform proudly, speak in awholesome way and to accept responsibility.

EDUCATIONAL CREED

By faith we believe the Bible to be the divinely inspired, inerrant Word of God, the only absolute rule for faith and conduct, and therefore also for the education of our children at home and at school. We recognise the centrality of Jesus Christ in all of life including education. The following guiding principles are foundational to Dubbo Christian School.

Special task of parents

Children are a gift from God and in His manifold wisdom, He has appointed parents to be responsible for raising their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord according to the Word of God.

Similarly, God has given children, on their part, a corresponding responsibility to honour, respect and obey their parents in the Lord.

In accord with this Biblical responsibility, God has given parents authority over their children to guide and direct them in the way of righteousness, therefore also holding them responsible for that part of their children’s education which takes place outside the home.

Special task of the School

Believing Jesus Christ to be the Lord of our whole life, we understand a Christian school to be a legitimate educational institution. As a parent-controlled Christian school, Dubbo Christian School exists to support parents in the Christ-centred, biblically based nurture and education of children. In this capacity the School operates in dynamic partnership with parents under the authority of God.

It is the special task of the School to: lead students, under the guidance of the Word of God, to discern the coherent purpose and structure of the Creation in Christ; direct students to commit their heart to the truth and attain understanding, wisdom and righteousness through Christ; and prepare and equip them in the life-long development and use of their God-given skills, talents and creativity, so fulfilling their unique calling in life in subjection to Christ as Lord.

The school community

Parents, with their children, united in Christ for the special task of the School, together with executive and teaching staff and others who share with them a common confession of faith, constitute a Christian school community that is not in subjection to church, state or other societal structure concerning its special task, but is subject to Christ alone Who only rules as Lord over all.

The responsibility and corresponding authority of parents for the nurture of their children, including especially their responsibility for those aspects of this nurture that form the special task of the School, is to be fully recognised and safeguarded by the School at all times.

While the School is entitled to expect freedom from interference in its special task, it is required to respect and uphold all legitimate authority, in particular the authority of family, church and state and to encourage this respect in students, according to the Word of God.

Within the school community, students are subject to the authority of the teacher, whose legitimate authority is to be upheld by the whole school community. Authority is never to be exercised or maintained for its own sake, but in the School is only to be used for the effective nurture of students, in harmony with the special task of the School and with an awareness that all authority is of God, to Whom all who exercise authority must give account.

Since the fruit of all Christ-centred education depends on the sovereign gracious work of the Holy Spirit, all within the school community are to pursue the educational task together. This is achieved through constant prayer and humble reliance upon God, that the Holy Spirit may enable them to be good instruments in His hands for bringing children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, and that He may so bless their work that the students come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and Master, Whom to follow and serve in all spheres of life is their greatest privilege and joy.

PAYMENT OF FEES. Fees are payable in full by the first Friday of each term unless an existing fee arrangement is in place. This agreement is established by the submission of the Fee Payment Commitment Form. Quarterly Fee Statements are issued in the holidays preceding each term. Fee Payment can be made by Direct Debit (preferred), BPay, electronic funds transfer, Centrepay, EFTPOS, cheque or cash. Payment arrangements, including weekly, fortnightly and monthly options are available upon request. If paying via this method, we encourage all families to finalise their accounts by the end of November 2020.

PROMPT PAYMENT DISCOUNTS K-12. A prompt Payment Discount of $25 per family per term is applicable for payment received on or before the end of the first week of term of each term. Annual Payment Discount of $220 per annum is applicable for payment received on or before the end of the first week of Term 1.

FEE ASSISTANCE. Any family interested in applying for Fee Assistance in 2020 are invited to complete an application form, available from the Accounts Department or OurDCS │Fee & Payment Info.

TEXTBOOK DEPOSIT. A $50 textbook deposit is payable upon a student commencing secondary school - this charge will be included on your fee statement. This deposit may be refunded when the student leaves the school, subject to the satisfactory return of all textbooks, equipment and resources in an acceptable condition and school fees paid.

BUILDING FUND. The School Building Fund provides a structure for the school community to support the ongoing development of Dubbo Christian School. Donations to the Building Fund (NAB BSB: 082-564 Account: 78 650 4218) help provide the school with the resources to finance building plans for future expansion to accommodate the long term needs of both current and future students. Donations of $2 and over are tax deductible and a receipt will be provided.

TERMINATION OF ENROLMENT. Ten term weeks’ notice in writing addressed to the Principal is required if parents decide to remove their child/ren from the school at any stage during the school year. This includes students who will be leaving DCS at the end of the current year. If this notice is not given, parents will be charged fees in lieu of the period of notice.
