What to Pack

Dubai, while relatively liberal, is still a Muslim city, and as

such you should aim to pack culturally-sensitive clothing.

Bathing suits, tank tops & sun dresses are okay on the

beach, but they may cause issues in public places. Pack

loose, long linens and cottons that extend to your elbows

and beyond the knee.

Dubai locals love dressing up for the evening; pack formal

clothing or a cocktail dress if you plan to have an evening

drink at a city club.

A light jacket is recommended, not for the outdoors, but for

shopping malls and hotels that frequently run their air

conditioning to freezing levels.

Strong U/V filtered sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, and a baseball cap or sun hat are essential to beat Dubai’s

scorching sun.

Electronic chargers for your camera, phone, iPad, etc. and

extra camera memory card(s).

Electronic adapter and converter. The voltage in Dubai is

220-240.

Reading ListArabian Sands

Author: Wilfred Thesige

Travel, 1959, 400 pages.

Explorer Wilfred Thesig

traveled across the Arab

Empty Quarter in an

attempt to capture the li

of the Bedu People, whotraditional lifestyle exis

unaltered for thousands of years until the

of World War 2. In the spirit of T. E.

Lawrence, he set out to explore the desert

Arabia, traveling among peoples who had

never seen a European and considered it

duty to kill Christian infidels. His now-cl

account is invaluable to understanding th

modern Middle East.

Seven Pillars of WisdoAuthor: T.E. Lawrence,

Memoir, 550 pages.

This is the exciting and

highly literate story of

real Lawrence of Arabi

written by Lawrence

himself, who helped un

Arab factions against th

occupying Turkish army, circa World War

Lawrence has a novelist's eye for detail, apoet's command of the language, an

adventurer's heart, a soldier's great story,

his memory and intellect are at least as go

as all those.

Arabia Through The

Looking Glass

Travel, 1980, 352 pages

Description: Written

during the Oil Boom E

Arab emigrants to Brita

 Jonathan Raban set out

expatriate life in the region stand as true

today as they did when he visited in the l

1970s.
