  • WELCOMEWelcome to this special publication for attendees of the 2020 PRINTING United Digital Experience. In June, PRINTING United announced the decision to transition from an in-person event in Atlanta, to a comprehensive digital platform. The PRINTING United Digital Experience, taking place Oct. 26-Nov. 12, offers attendees three weeks of live, guided programming, education-al sessions, and panel discussions with the experts; along with access to a complete online exhibitor showcase featuring information about the newest industry technology, case studies, whitepapers, the chance to speak with exhibitor representatives, and more.

Today is Day 12 of this 14-day event. Focused on the commercial printing market — specifi-cally dry and liquid toner — attendees have a packed schedule of content and product demos (see the detailed agenda on page 4).

Digital printing offers many valuable benefits to commercial printers. It is agile, because digital technology enables affordable short-runs that can be produced as needed with a fast turnaround. It is efficient, because digital presses are driven by digital workflow that are highly automated that enable print providers to produce more and efficient profitable work. There is also an experiential factor when it comes to products created with digital technology; they can include tactile embellishments that are eye-catching and memorable.

Marketers and organizations use print to enhance their customer’s experiences, build relationships, and create a positive perception or impression of the company. Digital printing enables marketers and brand owners to do that because they can personalize their printed materials with images that might reflect the recipient. These pieces can be printed on a variety of unique and interesting substrates. They can also feature special effects beyond four-colors.

So digital printing — once considered an emerging technology, but no longer — offers value to both commercial printers and their customers. It has become a staple technology.

In 2020, many OEMs planned product launches to coincide with drupa 2020. But with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting us worldwide, print providers have not had the opportunity to see the new products released earlier this year. As part of the product demos today, you’ll be able to see products from Konica Minolta, HP, Xeikon, Duplo USA, and Graphic Whizard.

Dino Pagliarello, senior VP, Konica Minolta will give us an exclusive glimpse into the Accurio-Press C14000, a breakthrough in digital revolution from their customer center in Ramsey, N.J.

From HP’s customer center in Georgia, attendees will have the opportunity to see the new Indigo 12000 and Indigo 7900, as well as hear first-hand from customers using the Indigo 100k and Indigo 15k.

From Xeikon’s Innovation Center in Chicago, Ill., James Quan, demo room manager, will showcase the Xeikon SX30000, its new press built on Xeikon’s SIRIUS technology.

Direct from Duplo’s showroom in Orange County, Calif., Si Nguyen, VP of Sales, will present the DDC-810 Raised Spot UV coater, the DC-646 slitter/cutter/creaser, and UD-310 rotary diecutter.

Graphic Whizard has a wide variety of print finishing equipment suitable for all shop sizes and budgets. In this video they will demonstrate productivity through automation with the PT 335SCCMulti.

As a companion to the 2020 PRINTING United Digital Experience, these 14 special daily publications will provide attendees with a reference guide to the day of content, as well as much-needed insights into how print services providers can best position themselves now for the recovery — and growth — to come.

We hope this information will help serve as a valuable resource as you plan the next steps for your business, and determine where — and how — to expand and grow.

Electrophotographic (EP) printing with toner presses will nev-er stop being an option for commercial printers. Offset lithogra-phy reigns supreme for high volumes, and production inkjet is commanding most of the attention right now in the digital realm. But for as long as the commercial market continues to prize print quality and application flexibility in low- to mid-range quanti-ties, the place of toner — the first digital printing process — will remain secure.

As the following highlights from the principal EP vendors’ new-product announcements over the last 18 months make clear, the pace of technical innovation in this category shows no signs of slowing down. It’s worth pointing out that although all of these suppliers are thoroughly committed to inkjet, they’re keeping toner firmly in their portfolios as a complementary offer-ing. EP may have rivals in that market, but it has no usurpers — its reputation for adding value is too well established.

CanonCanon launched the new imagePRESS C10010VP / C9010VP digital color presses, built for high productivity of up to 90 ppm (imagePRESS C9010VP) and 100 ppm (imagePRESS C10010VP), with one-up images on letter sized sheets; and up to 112 ppm (imagePRESS C10010VP) with two-up images on tabloid sized sheets. Both support up to 150-lb. cover stocks, and are opti-mized for synthetic media.

Long sheet feeder options offer automatic duplex printing and

continuous feed of banner stocks up to 30". Canon says this en-ables the presses to create cost effective posters and signage, as well as six- and eight-panel marketing collateral pieces.

HP IndigoHP Indigo expanded its already extensive lineup of liquid-toner EP presses for the commercial market with the launch of the seven-color, B2-format, HP Indigo 15K, based on the HP Indigo 12000 platform. Features include stochastic screening and the ability to RIP images at 1,600 dpi. Existing HP Indigo 12000 presses are fully upgradeable to the 15K advancements.

First to market from the new Indigo Series 5 platform is the HP Indigo 100K, a 6,000-sph device designed to run 100,000 B2 impressions per shift, generating 12 million duplex B2 sheets annually. Among its assets are a five-source feeder; offset-like, gripper-to-gripper paper feeding; and color calibration with an on-press spectrophotometer.

HP Indigo also introduced two A3-format devices: the HP Indigo 7K, featuring heat transfer applications and silver and invisible yellow Electroink; and the entry-level HP Indigo 7eco, in a four-color configuration with a fifth color station option.

Konica MinoltaKonica Minolta’s flagship toner press for commercial print is the AccurioPress C14000, boasting print speeds up to 140 ppm, and resolution equivalent to 3,600x2,400 dpi. The press can handle

Commercial printers doing check printing and other types of financial work may be interested in a new MICR version of the AccurioPress 6136, which uses a high-security toner formulation said to make toner scraping nearly impossible. As an added layer of security, red dye is released to void the check if chemical alteration is attempted.

High Chroma, another specialty toner from Konica Minolta, enables the AccurioPress C83hc to reproduce images that are difficult to achieve with standard CMYK, such as bright purples and vibrant greens. This creates brighter and more saturated images that faithfully portray colors seen on graphic workstation monitors, according to the company.

RicohRicoh USA now offers a pair of what it calls “right-sized” sheetfed presses, the RICOH Pro C5300s and RICOH Pro C5310s. These light-production devices create images in full color at 2,400x4,800 dpi, with the Pro C5300S printing letter-sized pages at 65 ppm, and the Pro C5310S at 80 ppm. Commercial printers can use the presses as high-quality proofing devices, according to Ricoh, which is also targeting the devices to in-plants and marketing agencies.

XeikonXeikon champions dry-toner as the most sustainable digital printing

technology, promoting it as complementary to high-speed inkjet, and capable of high-quality results on all types and weights of stocks.

The company’s 2020 Xeikon Café event featured the virtual debut of a new dry-toner press platform: the SX30000 is a B2-format, continuous-feed device built for a broad range of graphic arts and commercial applications. The SX30000 can print a 20.4" web 5/5 at close to 100 fpm, equivalent to 426 letter-sized pages per minute, or 2,545 B2 sph. Coated and uncoated offset papers and digital stocks from 27-lb. text to 130-lb. cover can be imaged at up to 1,200x3,600 dpi, along with paperboard and synthetic media.

Books, high-quality direct mail, retail signage and display ma-terials, security printing, and general commercial print are among the things the SX30000 can produce with offset quality, says the manufacturer.

XeroxXerox added two new optional capabilities for its iGen 5 production press: the extra-long sheet (XLS), and Fluorescent Yellow Dry Ink.

The iGen 5 XLS enables printing sheet sizes up to 35" at rated speed. The extra-long capability delivers more pieces per sheet, increasing productivity of the iGen 5 by up to 25%. Xerox says print providers can take advantage of the iGen5’s versatility in applications such as four-panel brochures, book covers, banners, large-format clings, panoramic artwork, and multiple-up printing.

Printers now also have the option of using the iGen 5’s fifth print sta-tion to run Fluorescent Yellow Dry Ink in addition to orange, green, and blue gamut extension colors, as well as white and clear.

“It has to be perfect. And it has to be on time. Always.” Stephan De Vries, CEO at Fotofabriek, sets a high standard for the company and its print products — and does so to great results: it has won the largest annual independent photo book test in The Netherlands for five consecutive years. “We have been printing on the KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Platform since 2004, because of its superior print quality. And now having tested the new KODAK NEXFINITY Digital Press, and recently making the decision to pur-chase two of these presses, we are looking forward to expanding and improving the types of products we offer.”

Fotofabriek was established as an online portal for photo related applications in 2008 by Chris Russell, a full-service advertising agency in Groningen, The Netherlands. Chris Russell’s “full service” includes in-house print production, so it can deliver on its promises at all times. “We need to be fast and highly flexible, and at the same time be in complete control of quality. As we handle many very short run jobs, often even just one-offs, we only get one chance to do everything right; our product has to be impeccable on arrival at our customer’s desk,” says De Vries.

The print production site in Groningen serves Chris Russell’s retail customers and Fotofabriek’s photo applications users, as well as the Studentendrukwerk portal catering to the needs of students. “Although we consolidate very different types of customers and markets into our one production flow, we treat all jobs to the same standard. Quality has to be perfect. And delivery must be on time,” notes De Vries. “To achieve that we need to have the right people, reliable equipment, and a highly intelligent workflow system.”

At the facility, digital presses — including one NEXPRESS 2500, one NEXPRESS 3300, and one NEXFINITY — are running next to large-format printers and a variety of finishing systems. But this is no ordinary printing house. “We have arranged our production flow completely differently compared to most reg-ular print companies,” explains De Vries. “We have an average equipment utilization of only 20-30%. This ensures there is always enough production capacity available for peak volumes or any unexpected rush jobs.”

At the core of the production flow is smart software, devel-oped completely in-house, managing and controlling the entire

operation. “We not only need to always know the exact location of any one print job, but we also need to have an up-to-date overview at any time of the amount of work that has been processed, and the jobs that still need to be done,” says De Vries. “Throughout the facility, you see large screens that show status updates on the actual pro-duction flow — ‘21 minutes of lamination to be done,’ ‘three hours of book covers to be done’— that we can act upon quickly. The system alerts us to any bottlenecks, and allows us to quickly respond and scale up production adequately where and when it is needed. This makes scheduling the wide variety of jobs much easier and more flexible, as the system takes full advantage of available capacity at all times. Also, it enables us to produce and deliver photo books within only three days, where others will keep you waiting for five to 10 days.”

Connecting to Customers “We put a lot of effort into new ways of connecting to our customers,” notes De Vries. “For example, Fotofabriek offers customers the option to watch a video of how their individ-ual order is being produced. Cameras inside our production systems take shots of every step in the process and show what we do. These ‘public production’ videos allow custom-ers to also share their ‘making-of’ story on the Web.”

Looking for additional print volume, the company is constantly adding new products and testing new business models. De Vries also explains how Fotofabriek plans to ex-pand its business on a European scale, and even globally.

“We have decided to open up our bespoke back-office system to third parties by developing an API that connects to third parties’ apps, software, and portals. Through our ‘Print API’, anyone can make use of our back-office and ex-tensive portfolio of print products to sell their own artwork, designs, and applications. PrintAPI.io also enables you to set up a responsive web2print editor for your own website. And it allows printers and portals from around the globe to use Fotofabriek as their European production hub or, vice versa, to sell print products from Europe to other parts of the world and have them produced locally.” Print API is available for free, and has already signed up 200 users — large and small — in just one year.

De Vries has every intention to again excel at the next annual Photo Album Test. “By using KODAK NEXPRESS devices, we know we have the best technology on offer for photo books — nobody can beat us when it comes to quality and value for money. When we started out with our first NEXPRESS unit in 2004, Kodak was miles ahead of its competitors. We expect to see the same thing now with the NEXFINITY Press. It offers awesome quality, consistency, and color uniformity that will allow even better products at more competitive pricing. With its long sheet option at 120 cm, we will be able to expand our photo offering by making beautiful lay flat albums, and with the ability to run thicker substrates we see the possibility to add new products for the retail market, like boxes and cardboard signs.”

The sheetfed market, like so much else, has been changing at a remarkable pace recently. It’s hard to boil it all down into small, manageable, describable drivers of change, but four stand out in particular.

Technological innovation has done a lot to shape today’s market. Demand has been shifting in some notable ways, as consumers increasingly stay home and avoid high-traffic areas where posters, flyers, and the like would be particularly effective in days past. Those needs will be there as things open up again, but so will new needs such as entrance and site signage instructions that will likely need to be updated more frequently. That versatility is rooted in a massive expansion in capabilities. Today’s sheetfed presses are delivering higher print speeds, along with overall higher print quality. We’re seeing improvements in perceived texture and depth, as well as expanded color gamuts — helped in large part by increasingly afford-able five-color platforms. Being able to stand out and grab audienc-es’ attention is incredibly important right now, and sheetfed presses deliver a lot of options for earning eyes on your applications.

Those improvements are also inspiring a resurgence in designing for print, with the industry’s most creative minds at work, now with

greatly expanded toolboxes. Today’s sheetfed presses are turning around arresting applications at impressive speeds — and with great cost-efficiency. With so many options to choose from, it’s import-ant to decide which strengths you should emphasize to best drive growth.

Substrate expansion has brought exciting media into the conversa-tion, including linens, metallics, and window clings, as well as thicker stocks and banner-size sheets. Today’s presses are increasingly being designed with accommodating diverse substrates in mind, so sheetfed shops can leverage interesting combinations to grab audiences’ attention. With customers frequenting high-traffic areas less and less, you want to make sure your communication is the one they see. A unique substrate can go a long way.

Finishing equipment continues to improve, and the “finishing touches” can be the difference between an acceptable product and an exceptional product. From folder/cutter/creasers to saddle stitch-ers, cover interposers to hole punchers, finishing equipment has been making incredible strides in efficiency, reliability, and expanded capabilities. Whatever kind of applications your shop produces, there is likely a way for finishing equipment to give it an extra edge.

growing number of digital printers who have asked for a highly accurate, low cost,

    reducing cost and waste.

All of these are interacting in a variety of ways to drive appli-cation trends. New on-the-rise applications are emerging all the time, including some you might not have thought your shop could produce. Think of what is most sought after today, such as games, instructional materials to accompany remote learning, and new mail applications as businesses attempt to keep the lines of communica-tion open. With new and exciting technologies, you can keep these applications and revenue in house. Two major examples we see in today’s market:

    • 5th station applications, such as white, clear, security red, neon pink, and yellow to expand the color gamut.

    • Long sheet capabilities to expand your portfolio, such as gate folds, dust jackets, pocket folders, light packaging, and land-scape saddle-stitch booklets.

If your shop is ready to deliver on these, you have to be sure to communicate that to customers. Just because you might not be able to see customers in person doesn’t mean you should stop reaching out. Strive to have regular conversations with customers and pros-pects, to not only communicate what you can offer, but listen to what they are looking for — they can give you an advance look at what new applications may be on the rise, and therefore a good idea for you to add.

Sheetfed presses open up a wide range of applications printers can offer brands and print buyers looking to stand out from the crowd.
