They get paid to tell their stories at school assemblies in our area and start saving the money for college instead of buying more drugs. Dr. Shrand explained that about one in 25 adults are at risk of addiction from prescription drugs, but that about 1 in 4 people under age 18 are at risk because the prefrontal cortex of the brain where problem solving is done is not fully developed in young people. Social approval and pleasure seeking are primary at this age. The challenge, he said, is to find other ways for the kids to feel respected and valued instead of taking drugs. The drug story theater is such a way. The applause at school assemblies gives the kids a great rush. His program has been funded in part with a grant obtained by Vinny DeMacedo when he was a State Representative. The doctor is currently seeking another grant. Dr. Shrand estimated that there are about 2 million adults in the U.S. who meet the criteria for addiction. He blames this in part on the overprescription of Oxycontin, Percocet, and Vicodin by the medical community since 2007. He pointed out that when those who have become addicted cannot get prescription drugs they seek out heroin, but the heroin pushers sometimes lace their product with fentanyl which is even more addictive. He estimated that only about 10% of the addicted will seek treatment because they have trouble trusting people.¬ In regard to marijuana, Dr. Shrand stated that medical marijuana is much stronger than the marijuana that used to be available. He characterized marijuana as a gateway drug and indicated his opposition to legalizing it. Guests Larry O’Connell introduced the guests.

He estimated that only about 10% of the addicted will seek treatment because they have trouble trusting people.¬In regard to marijuana, Dr. Shrand stated that medical marijuana is much stronger than the marijuana that used to be

available. He characterized marijuana as a gateway drug and indicated his opposition to legalizing it.
