HONDA rider Cody Cooper in action.
T e Awamutu has strong connectionsto the triumphant CambridgeMotorcycle Club — winners of the
annual Battle of the Clubs (BOTC)motocross at Taupo.
The Honda Shop Te Awamutu aremajor sponsors of the tree town club, aswell as supporting key team membersCody Cooper and Trent Collins.
Cooper had led his Cambridge teamto victory at the BOTC motocross atTaupo last year and the 33-year-old wasback to line up again with his HondaCRF450 at this year’s eighth annualedition of the fundraiser event.
With eight years of Motocross ofNations experience under his wheels, not to mention five national MX1 crownsto his credit, including the title he wonearlier this year, Cooper was alwaysgoing to be one of the favoured riderscompeting at Taupo.
Created for the first time in 2010 toact as a cash-builder to assist Team NewZealand each year in its bid forMotocross of Nations (MXoN) gloryoverseas, the BOTC has a format thatmirrors what the Kiwis can expect whenthey line up at the 2017 MXoN inEngland in October.
The only real difference between thedomestic BOTC and international MXoNis that riders were lined up along clublines, rather than nationality. Each teamcomprised six riders rather than three, enabling junior riders to also be involvedin the BOTC fundraiser.
Cooper was in scintillating form. Hequalified fastest in the MX1 class, thenconvincingly won both the combinedMX1/Veterans and MX1/MX2 races, oneach occasion registering the fastest laptime.
He was one of only two riders to finishthe day with a clean sweep — the otherdominant performance came fromManawatu Orion Motorcycle Club’sjunior 125cc rider Hayden Smith, whoqualified fastest in his class and wonboth the junior 125/85 and 250/125combined races.
“I’m loving this bike,” said Cooper.“The engine is great, we have a good
clutch package and we’re working nowon getting the suspension dialled in. I’llcontinue testing things until August andwe get the new 2018-model bikes inSeptember.”
Although the Kiwi MXoN team hasnot yet been finalised, Cooper is almostcertain to be selected in the comingweeks, with some of the components onthe bike he raced at Taupo to be taken
with him to England.“We will most likely get a Honda
CRF450 supplied by Buildbase Honda inEngland (a team operated by formerworld champion Dave Thorpe, who is along-time supporter of the Kiwi effort).”
A record 30 club teams were enteredat Taupo, along with 25 Mini teams in aseparate but parallel mini BOTC contestat the same venue, and this raised morethan $14,500 for the Kiwi MXoNcampaign.
“It was massive to see the supportbeing shown by the New Zealand clubs,”said Cooper.
“The MXoN is a huge event and a veryimportant one. It’s good to see this sortof encouragement being given.”
When Cooper returns from Englandhe will begin preparation to defend hisnational MX1 title. If plans cometogether, he will also travel again to theUnited States to race several rounds ofthe national series there in 2018,possibly even a full campaign.
“I raced two rounds in the US lastmonth and it’s great exposure for thebrand and for my sponsors too.”

Astra Sedan newto Holden range
I n May we got to drive theimpressive newly introducedHolden Astra — back in
familiar five-door hatchback form. The old name was back to
replace the Cruze (which hadreplaced the Astra) with a bettermodel. So good in fact the Opel/Vauxhall badged versions hadbeen named 2016 European Carof the Year.
I had been mightily impressedby the top-of-the-range HoldenAstra RS-V from Rosetown
Holden.This month I drove an
important new addition to theAstra line-up — the brand newSedan.
Built on the same proven
platform as the sporty hatch model, the sedanis designed more for comfort and room out ofthe same GM European office, but styled in theUSA, tweaked in Australia and built for ourmarket in Korea.
My first drive of the Astra Sedan wasactually the base LS model. It also comes in LTand LTZ grades — all powered by the 1.4-litredirect injection turbocharged petrol engineoffering 110kW of power, 240Nm of torqueand mated to a six-speed automatictransmission.
It joins the Astra five-door hatchbacklaunched in April and Holden has alsoconfirmed recently the UK-built AstraSportwagon will arrive in showrooms near theend of 2017 — part of the new Europeaninspired Holden range.
The sedan models sit in the competitive$30-40K range.
It is longer than the hatch and has muchmore cargo volume.
In fact with the driving seat in my usualposition, there was an impressive amount ofrear legroom and the boot is cavenous. Cleverdesign work here.
The turbo engine is responsive and has apretty good sound. With power and torque
sitting in theusual 2-litrerange, it works perfectly in thismid-sized car — but economy israted at a small car 6.1l/100km.
Holden Australia designers have styled aunique Holden face, with exclusive new frontfascia and grille, closely aligning with the nextgeneration Commodore to give a morecohesive look to not only Astra, but to thewider Holden product range.
It has a 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating, sixairbags and reverse camera are standard, plusa variety of active and passive features as wellas Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The LS model has 16-inch alloy wheels, a7.0-inch colour touchscreen with the newgeneration MyLink connectivity which includes
phone projection.Other features include a 3.5-inch
monochrome information cluster, six-speakeraudio system, rear park assist and reversingcamera, cruise control, auto headlights anddaytime running lights and a 60/40 fold flatrear seat.
That is a lot of bang for your buck — andthis is the base model.
I’ll be driving the top of the range AstraSedan for a forthcoming review — if one sitslong enough on the yard before selling.Betterget down to Rosetown Holden and book yourtest drive soon.

51 Holden - must be
Last month we showcasedToyota’s big effort atNational Fieldays 2017 —
this month we look at three ofour other dealershipinvolvements in the hugeagricultural event.
Ford used the simplestrategy of parking a bright red,V8 Mustang in the sunlightoutside their marquee to bringpeople in — and it worked.
Inside there was the full line-up of cars, a stonking FordRanger dressed to kill — andThe Ford Grill with free hotsausages.
Rival Holden had a couple ofgreat displays — and thechance to drive a simulator forprizes.
Front-and-centre was GregMurphy’s No. 51 Holden — theshrunken version.
We are used to the V8Supercar and four time Bathurstwinning legend’s No.51Commodore — but this was hisBarina based rally car.
Holden and ‘Murph’ havecontinued their longrelationship with his newventure into NZ Rally — Holdenbuilding the Kiwi a fantasticlooking Barina for his 2017assault on the title.
Over at Mitsubishi it was amore low-key approach — theJapanese automakershowcasing their extensivepeople moving, off-roading, all-wheel-drive capable work-horserange at competitive prices.
And — of course — beingfieldays everyone was ready todo a deal.

White paper on effectof electric vehicles onelectricity infrastructureHow the growing number of
electric vehicles will affectNew Zealand’s electricity
infrastructure is an issue DriveElectric has been investigating.
The not-for-profit group’s latestwhite paper Peak Pressure: whatchallenges do electric vehicles poseto New Zealand’s electricity grid?suggests co-operation betweenelectricity wholesalers, retailers andthe vehicle industry is key.
Drive Electric board member EricPellicer, from Powerco, whocontributed to the paper, says thegroups need to work together.
That’s because, unlike homes, itis difficult to track where on the gridEVs will be charging at any one time.
“There will be hotspots and wehave no idea where they will be.Then all of a sudden you’ve doubledthe peak,” he says.
“EVs are less than 1 per cent ofthe fleet, which is still ahead of ourtarget for this year.
“But in some parts you have 10per cent EVs and in some parts youhave none.”
“One of the key ways the groupscould work together would be to setup a form of EV or EV chargerregistration.
“If there was a way people couldregister their EVs at the dealership, that’s where the collaborationcomes in.
“Or alternatively, new EV ownerscould be encouraged to registerchargers with their power provider. That way we will have moreinformation about where the EVs arelocated around the country.”
But Mr Pellicer reiterates it willonly work if all the different groupsco-operate.
“We need to plan for thechallenges ahead.
“Networks are not designedwith excessive headroom becausethat would be uneconomical forconsumers.
“They have mainly been built todeliver what we think will beneeded in 10, 15, 20 years’ time. But electric vehicles couldcompletely change the mix inpotentially a much shortertimeframe.”
Meridian general manager retailNeal Barclay says the times at whichpeople charge their EVs could alsobe an issue.
The Drive Electric boardmember points out that someretailers are already trialling EVtariffs in an attempt to spread thecharging load throughout the day.
Meridian, for example, providessignificantly cheaper rates between9pm and 7am in the main metroareas of Auckland, Wellington andChristchurch.
“How effective such ‘carrots’ are
in practice depends on theattractiveness of the pricedifference between peak andoffpeak.
“Much of that depends on thesignals to the retailers provided bylines companies,” says Mr Barclay.
He also believes the uptake ofEVs will be quicker than mostpeople think.
“EVs could be like mobilephones. Currently they’re moreexpensive than internal combustionengine-powered vehicles, but theprice differential is closing fast and Ibelieve they are going to take off alot more quickly than most peopleare predicting.”
“If retailers and lines companiescan effectively collaborate, we cancome up with pricing that issustainable and equitable betweenthose who have EVs and those whodon’t.”
The white paper, which wassponsored by Powerco andMeridian, includes research puttogether from round tablediscussions held by Drive Electric’sboard and extended to includemember input.
The organisation will releasemore white papers in the comingmonths.

The submissionnotes the completedWaikato Expressway will meetthe criteria for a 110km/h speed limit.
“This move seems a sensible measureproviding it is controlled properly,” saidcommittee chair Hugh Vercoe.
The submission says, however, that
it’s assumed trucks will continue totravel at the maximum legal speed of nomore than 90km/h.
The submission added that it will bevery important that strong enforcementis in place to ensure cars do not travel

To ensure thisenforcement is

The committeealso noted extra
concerns about thesafety of cyclists using
roads where the speed limit islifted to 11 km/h.
It said cyclists should be separatedfrom general traffic flow and be cateredfor by cycle lanes on or beside suchroads.

State-of-the-art carwash openfor businessT e Awamutu motorists have
been watching as a newcarwash takes shape at
Super Service Station on OhaupoRoad, and now it is open forbusiness.
It may have seemed like a longwait for the public — but spare athought for owner Paul Ensorwho has been planning it for fiveyears.
That planning finally came tofruition on the weekend — laterthan expected due to someunexpected hold-ups.
From day one Mr Ensorwanted ‘the best’ he could offerTe Awamutu’s motoring public.
He did extensive research andchose an Istobal system that metall his requirements.
And he listened to hiscustomers and has provided adrive through carwash, self-helpcarwash, self-help campervan/boat wash bay, vehicle interiorgrooming bays and a walk in dogwash area.
Located right next to theservice station, the new facilityutilises the existing entrances andexits, with entry to the wash areafrom the back of the servicestation facility.
Most popular is expected tobe the drive through carwash, which has three wash cyclechoices, either with or withoutthe brushes.
Mr Ensor says the contactlesswashes have become popularbecause it minimises damageassociated with earlier carwashes, but the new brushes aremade of a modern material thatgives a better clean, withoutcausing damage if therecommendations are followed.
The basic wash involves rise, soap, wash, rinse cycle —through to the super wash whichinvolves wheel and underbodywash, two wash passes, rinse anddry.
Customers buy the wash atthe service station and receive acode to enter.
Both self-wash bays, interiorgrooming bays and the dog washwill accept tokens or coins.
The self-wash bays feature thechoice of tyre and engine wash, medium or high pressure soapwash, high pressure rinse andwax.
The open bay, big enough forcampervans, boats etc. has boththe medium/high pressure wand
and long handled broom for thesoap wash.
Mr Ensor also paid a lot ofattention to the environmentalimpact of the facility.
A 30,000 litre rainwater tankwas installed so the facility couldbe as self-sustaining as possiblefor its water, and reduce theimpact on the Council system.
Underground is an extensive
system of tanks and filters thatcapture all the used water andchemicals.
Filtered waste is collected andonly clean water is released tothe stormwater system.
Mr Ensor says it is fact moreenvironmentally responsible touse his carwash than do ityourself at home.
He says the system uses the
minimum amount of water, probably less than you would useat home, and all the waste iscaptured and disposed of so itcan’t enter any waterways.
The carwash opened withoutmuch fanfare this week — MrEnsor says people started using itimmediately and they are takingthe opportunity to fine-tune theoperation.
