INTRODUCTIONTaking on the design and build of a cultural building is exciting, and

adds anaesthetic challenge to the brief of providing civic amenities.

A DRIVE-IN THEATER is a type of a movie theater that is located outdoors. Moviegoers are meant to drive into the theater and park their cars in front of a large screen that displays the movie.

DESIGN CONSIDERATION• RAMPS – Inclined in curves so that the front of each vehicle is raised

providing even the rear seat passengers with a good view of screen over the roofs of the front row of cars.

• SURFACING – Should be dust free and not slippery when wet. Crushed stone topped with gravel , oil treated or

black topped is often used.

• CAPACITY – Maximum capacity is limited by the number of ramps possible with clear view of screens . Recommended roughly minimum 3 m (10ft) of width per car and radical depth as 1.15 m (3.8ft) and speaker post 50cm (1.7ft) high.

• TICKET BOOTH – 1 booth = 300 vehicles 2 booth = 600 vehicles 3 booth = 800 vehicles 4 booth = 1000 vehicles

• SCREEN – The screen is best facing east or north since this permits earlier performances and in areas with harsh climates the screen should be housed in a structure with solid walls.14.50 m x 11.30 m = 650 vehicles (48 x 37 ft )17.0 m x 13.0 m = 950 vehicles (56 x 42 ft )

Asbestos sheets , aluminum and steel decking have been used.

• Due to the arcuate arrangement of the stall-ways each space or stall is of generally tapered form, wider at its entrance end or its end joining the driveway. This facilitates the movement of the automobiles into and from the stall or space.

• PROJECTION BOOTH – Centrally located at 100 m from the screen. Projection angle depends on ramp layout . ( 280 ft ) It must house 2 operators , 2 film projector , a large generator and sound amplification system.

• SPEAKER UNITS – Best served by “ In-car speakers ” . For 2 cars , located on posts set 5m apart (16 to 18ft ) and can be hooked into the car by visitors.

• CONCESSIONS - Are the snack bars. Ramps, signal lights and inter-

communication system may be used.

• STORE ROOMS - For cleanup and repair equipments For supplies and signagesFire extinguishers Records Kitchen store

• The stall-ways are made approximately 15 or 16 feet wide while the driveways are made approximately thirty-five feet wide.
