    Brief history

    1750- actor-managers Walter Murray and

    Thomas Kean established the Theatre on

    Nassau Street. They primarily presented

    Shakespearean works and ballad operaslike "The Beggar's Opera."

    1753-the growth of theatre in New

    York continued when a company of twelve

    actors led by Lewis Hallam relocated from

    Williamsburg, Virginia to New York..

    1798- the first true Broadway Theatre

    was built, the Park Theatre seated 2,000

    people and was centrally located in the

    city.

    1826-The Bowery Theatre was built, 1

    attempted to compete with the ParkTheatre for the high-class crowd.
